Welcome to our 4th anniversary. Much thanks to the team for continuing to produce our quarterly magazine, the first of its kind in the IKD. So to Senseis Simone, Sean and Richard, I say heartfelt thanks and keep up the good work. We must not forget Dianne who was the graphic artist at the inception and did yeoman service for almost three years. The producers of the newsletter are once again requesting articles and news from members of our karate community in order to ensure it continues to successfully thrive. IKD also continues to be in full competitive mode with the upcoming Caribbean Championships which will be in Jamaica in July. Karatekas from our dojo have also started to participate in national trials for the 2nd WKF Caribbean Karate Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago under the auspices of the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Union in July. We wish them best of luck and success. This edition provides inter alia, updates on our recent grading, results on competitions, warm memories of our recent fund-raiser and general information on a variety of topics. Please peruse the event calendars that have been listed and support as many activities that you can. So do keep reading and enjoy‌‌.. Regards

PRESIDENT

RICARDO WOODING

The TKA is a bona fide member of the TTKU which is Governing body for all Karate in Trinidad and Tobago. The T.T.K.U. has been in existence for the last eighteen years. The organization was born in 1998 Braz after much effort on the part of several dedicated karate practitioners to create a more representative national karate body. This was done and an organization was formed that was recognized by the Ministry of Sport

as the national body for karate. Recognition was also

given by the TTOC and this was due to our membership body for the World Karate Federation (WKF). The TTKU is also a member of the CCCK (Central American and Caribbean Karate Federation) and founder members of the CKF (Caribbean Karate Federation). The TTKU promotes sport karate under the direction of the previously mentioned international organizations and as a result TTKU is involved in sport karate which is recognized by the world’s highest sporting organization which is the IOC (International Olympic Committee). Karate became an Olympic sport when the WKF became a member of the IOC in 1998. In 2009 karate was just pipped by Rugby 7’s and golf in becoming one of the sports which will make up the Summer Olympic program in Brazil in 2016. Karate came 3rd in the final vote of IOC members in November 2009. For those interested in the highest level of sport karate TTKU is the organization to join. For more information

TTKU TOURNAMENT

Sensei Nicole Lambie attains Gold

The TTKU Tournament was held on 13th March 2016. The TKA received an award for the most number of participants and for making the most noise. Kudos must go out to Sensei Kelly‘s Dojo, Arima and Sangre Grande Shotokan Academy where 14 of her students who participated medaled, including Leianna and Jordan Valentine, Maciah Haywood, Keron John, Asa Buchan, Theron Ali and Jamela. The made the TKA very proud. We also had the usual stalwarts medaling such as Sensei Tammy and Nicole and Sempai Tempro.

Issue #27 APR - JUNE, 2016

CENTRAL-AMERICAN &

CARIBBEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Campeonato Central Americano y del Caribe Congratulations to our Ladies team (Tamara Joseph, Natakki Hypolite and Nicole Lambie) who placed second in Team Kata in the Central-American and Caribbean Championships which was held in Mexico from the 11-17th April, 2016. A job well-done!!!!

TKA held its annual fundraiser on 17th April at Woodbrook Youth facility. At a recession (highly discounted) price of only $100, patrons were able to obtain a wonderful creole meal consisting of options from delicious items such as pigeon peas, stewed or baked chicken, curry goat, yam, coo-coo, baked fish, stewed pork, calaloo, vegetable casserole, red beans, macaroni pie and vegetable rice, all of which were home made.

Thanks to all the chefs who show-cased their culinary skills and those who made monetary donations. All proceeds will go towards offsetting costs associated with sending the team to Jamaica.

My KARATE Memories By Simone Thorne Mora

While rummaging through my Karate box looking for some material to prepare a feature article, I discovered some notes that I had written from an interview with Shihan Woona-Tai sometime back in 2013 but I had never used the material. I thought it would be a waste not to use it as it was still very relevant and provided inter alia, information on the differences between the International Shotokan Karate Federation and the International Karate Daigaku, the international organizations to which the TKA formerly was and is currently affiliated, as well as on Shihan Woon-a-Tai himself. However as it was done so long ago and my handwriting as usual almost illegible, there are gaps in my memory of the context in which the answers were given so I will just present some “rough” notes of some of the things he said. Please forgive me where the information does not flow smoothly. • IKD has the same technical standards as • Tradition in the 20th Century. The HAORI the ISKF but they are more relevant to gown, for example, used by IKD judges the 20th century is traditional wear over the gi. They are used because it allows senior Senseis to • WKF teaches basics but do not teach judge and compete in tournaments at a Bunkai yet Shihan Nakayama since monument’s notice by simply removing the 1960’s made films with Bunkai. By dissecting Katas for Bunkai, he was better able to understand the meaning of Kata moves. I hope you find the above information beneficial to your understanding of Karate
