Issue #30 JAN - MAR, 2017

Welcome to our 30th Edition Welcome to our 30th edition, the first for 2017 and I wish you continued success in your Karate endeavours for the rest of the year. As you may recall in our December issue, mention was made that history was created when the International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of Karate in the 2020 Olympic games which will be held in Toyko, Japan. This issue will update readers on the TKA’s efforts in training and preparing future Olympians who will represent Trinidad and Tobago in Tokyo in the first instance and beyond. In future, the TKA will also use this medium (one of many) to highlight the resources required to sustain our High Performance Programme, the name given to TKA’s programme to train these athletes. We are therefore asking you, our TKA family to disseminate our newsletter to all your friends, family and business associates to market your organization with the intent of securing some of the financial resources necessary to send our athletes to the various competitions around the globe. In closing we must also recognize that given the daily increasing violence threatening our society Karate can be a useful tool in slowing this spread, both from the viewpoint of self -control (our DOJO KUN) and self-defence (Karate techniques). As such, for those new Karatekas and parents of young Karatekas, let us revisit our Dojo Kun: Seek perfection of Character Be Faithful Endeavour Respect Others Refrain From Violent Behaviour

OSS!!!

Issue #30 JAN - MAR, 2017

INSTRUCTOR TRAINING As is customary, the Magazine always aims at providing information on various topics. Today, we will present some brief Notes taken from one of Shihan Shim’s enlightening training sessions. These tips will assist in guiding some of the instructors in training activities to be undertaken and principles to be observed in their respective individual dojos:

Warm up; Cool Down

• Timing between upper and lower body applications; timing of the body mechanics (sequential coordination of muscle contraction); 99% feeling 90% of the time

• Light aerobic work or run; after warm, undertake dynamic stretching for <10 secs; focus on exercises that promote agility, speed & conditioning; do karate specific exercises that incorporate plyometric energy

• Sharpness of the lower body – thrusting and rotation power • Application of power - makiwara/bag

Kata Training

• Mental focus

• Centre line management; awareness and managing movement around centre line; speed

Kumite Training • Weapons -ability to score

• Weight shifting and leg speed – key to movement; smooth transitions in sync with upper body

• Proper distancing

• Balance - linked to management of centre line

• Defend your-self

• Timing - when to use technique • Semi –free sparring to deploy these rules of training above

• Arm brush - close contact for arms movements; concentrating the energy; improve coordination of kime and body connection

• Block; evade; aggression

These are just brief Notes. Instructors are encouraged to do their additional research on the principles and activities mentioned. Dr. Shim is also available to explain in more detail, if desired.

ON THE ROAD TO JAPAN LAUNCH OF High Performance PROGRAMME - HP Karate-Do A separate dojo was established to train persons wishing to increase the standard of performance required to compete in World Karate Federation (WKF) tournaments. The WKF is the largest international governing body of sport karate with over 130 member countries. It was formed in 1990 and is the only karate organization recognised by the International Olympic Committee. It has more than ten million members. The WKF organizes the Junior and Senior Karate World Championships, which are each held every other year. Currently the headquarters are located in Madrid, Spain and the styles recognised by the WKF are Shotokan, Gōjū-ryū, Shitō-ryū and Wadō-ryū. The WKF is the organization that will be approving Karatekas’ participation at the Japan 2020 Olympic Games. This High Performance Karate Programme which is the brain child of Dr. Shim, Technical Director of the TKA and TTKU. Started in August 2016 after the announcement was made that Karate is now an Olympic sport, the aim of the Programme is to raise the standard of Karatekas practicing Shotokan Karate in Trinidad and Tobago to the level where they can comfortably (and confidently) participate in WKF tournaments with the hope of eventually gain a spot in the 2020 Olympic Games. The original HP Karatekas include Dominic Wilkes, Natakki Hypolite, Nicole Lambie, Daniel Shim and Chennise Charles of TKA and more recently joining the group are Edward Rajmoolie and Zachary Alexander (TTKU).
