TO THE CLUB TO THE CLUB
Winter, ugh! For the first time in recent history the temperatures fell into the low 20’s and froze the golf course for a few days. Not our idea of fun! However, we came through without any real damage. As we continue to move through these colder months, we thank you for abiding by the cart path rules and helping to keep the golf course in its best condition. As many of you have already experienced, we are directing cart traffic to the fairways and out of the rough. Please enter the fairways at the yellow entry posts and exit before or through the exit posts. We want the carts to stay in the fairways and not in the rough.
Our 2023 golf event schedule, LGA, and MGA schedules are finalized, and we will publish this week. We have fewer events that will close the course in 2023. Please make note of these dates. For those times that the course is closed, Sea Palms has reciprocal arrangements with Brunswick Country Club, King and Prince, Sanctuary, and Jekyll Island for reduced rates when we are closed for an event or maintenance. Rates range from $50-$60 plus tax. We extend the same rates to their members during their closed days. It is up to each Member to decide when and where you would like to play during Sea Palms closed days. Please remember that each course is extending this as a courtesy to Sea Palms and the golf professional staff when their course is open for normal business. For our members to receive the reciprocal rate the Sea Palms golf shop or professional staff MUST make the call to arrange. We also are asked to provide all the names of the group. The golf shop will gladly call to arrange or assist with all options. Please understand that we will do our best to make the time you request but cannot guarantee it.
To answer an often asked question on the number of days we are closed for non-Member events and outings please keep in mind the following. Sea Palms is open 364 days per year. We average approximately 15 days per year for maintenance. 12 days are scheduled in advance and the others are usually for less than half a day with the course remaining open. As an example, local private clubs have a closed day each week to perform maintenance or host outings. They also host events and perform maintenance that close the course to Member play during normal operating days, at least 10-12 days each year. We make a conscience effort to limit the number of closed days when scheduling events for your benefit. On average, Sea Palms is open 35 to 40 more days per year than other facilities barring weather issues.
Here is an update on a few items of note. The netting at the practice range has been put into production. There is an 8–10-week manufacturing lead time for completion. As soon as it arrives, we are on schedule to repair all tears and holes. Installation of an area of synthetic turf at the practice range is scheduled for our June closure dates. Bunker repairs and maintenance continue on a regular basis. Bunkers on #18 and #16 have recently had new sand added and repair work completed. We also continue to trim and remove trees to create more sunlight and airflow to shaded areas to promote better turf health. We look forward to a great year ahead and thank you for your continued support of all things Sea Palms as we continue to make every effort to become the best Club for you!

I have enjoyed getting to know many of you over the past few months. I am still getting familiar with everyone, and I appreciate you all being friendly and patient with me as I still learn names and get to know our members. For those who don’t know yet, here is a little about me. I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and moved to South Georgia when I was 8 years old. I grew up playing golf and other sports. I attended Valdosta State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Instead of going to law school I chose a career in the golf business and began working on becoming a class A PGA member. I passed the 36 hole playing abilities test on the first try and completed the PGA class A program in near record time in 1 year and 11 months. Since then, I have spent the past 13 years working at Stone Creek Golf Club in Valdosta, GA where I was the Director of Golf. I achieved numerous awards including Georgia PGA Merchandiser of the Year in 2020 as well as Georgia PGA Central Chapter Teacher of the Year and Golf Professional of the Year. I have also spent time on the Georgia PGA board of Directors as President of the Central Chapter. My wife Kelly is also a Class A PGA member and will be working at Sea Island. We are expecting our first child in April or May of this year. We also have a 2-and-a-half-year-old Golden Retriever named Riley who keeps us busy! We look forward to what the future holds for us here on St. Simons Island and I am excited to be here at Sea Palms!
Upcoming events and thing to be aware of: Thank you all for using the yellow stakes in the fairways to enter and exit the fairways. During the winter months this will help keep the cart traffic from wearing out the grass in the rough. Please always remember to fix your ball mark and one more or your divot and one more. If we are all taking care of our golf course, it will show in the conditions that we play on. Our agronomy team is hard at work, day in and day out on the golf course. These things are important year-round, but they are even more important during the winter months when we are outside of growing season.

2023 RULES OF GOLF: 5 KEY CHANGES
These modifications are now part of the Rules and are in effect for all competitions and all players who fall under the categories covered in new Rule 25.
If your club is damaged during a round (except in cases of abuse) you may replace it, repair it or continue to use it.
Ball Moved by Natural Forces
When your ball is at rest after taking relief and then rolls into another area of the course due to natural causes, there is no penalty, and you must replace it.
New Rule — Modifications for Players with Disabilities Simplified
When using this relief option, you are required to drop your ball on the line, and it may roll up to one club-length in any direction.
You are not required to put your handicap on your scorecard and there is no penalty if you return your scorecard in a competition with an incorrect handicap, as this is now the Committee’s responsibility.
This change is consistent with other penalty reductions, such as reducing the penalty for playing an incorrectly substituted ball from the general penalty to one stroke

HOLIDAY SCRAMBLE HOLIDAY SCRAMBLE
We had a great day at the 2022 Holiday Scramble! The golf course was in great shape, and we had beautiful weather on December 3rd for a golf tournament. There were 22 teams that signed up for a great turnout! A great day on the golf course was followed by awards, cocktails, and some great food at Sago in the Frederica ballroom. The award winners for the scramble are as follows: Our Superintendent Dale Stephens won the closest to the hole award on #3 at 4’1”. Kelly Sparr was 6’8” on the ladies only closest to the hole on #6. Dave Erickson was 2’9” on hole #15. The team of Jim Kennedy, Joe Rushing, and Daniel Hull won the low net honors with a net score of 55 for the day. The team of Blake Hightower, Bo Parker, Dylan Reyna, and Kobe Manders won 1st place Gross with a score of 57! Congrats to the winners and thank you to everyone for participating and making this a fun day at Sea Palms!

As the winter months quickly approach, the Sea Palms agronomy team is focused on improving playability of all overseeded and non-overseeded surfaces. This year the team decided to not overseed the greens, to better manage health and speeds throughout the winter and spring seasons. We will now have more available time to work on other improvement projects throughout the property.
As the temperatures begin to decline and turf growth slows, we will begin to work on our winter projects. As members have probably noticed, work has already begun with the start of installation of new mulch in all flower and plant beds. We hope to have this completed before the new year. Other projects include extensive tree pruning, limbing up, and removal of suckers from trees throughout the course and along Frederica Road. These maintenance items will help to improve the aesthetics of the course and overall health of the turf. Plans are in the works to selectively replace/add sand in the bunkers as well.
The main priority for the maintenance team and Sea Palms Golf Club members, heading into the winter season will be to maintain a healthy stand of grass despite lack of optimal growing conditions. The team will be implementing entry and exit gates to help scatter cart traffic, and gates to access the fairways will be placed on the course. Please enter the fairway through the gate, remain on the fairway as you play the hole, and finally exit through the gate when finished. All these efforts will be a tremendous help toward limiting traffic volume patterns and preserving the rough during the winter months.
As always, help protect playing conditions by:
Repairing ball marks
Filling divots
Raking bunkers
Keeping carts on path at tees and greens
Obeying daily cart traffic

ChristmasTreeLighting
This year at Sea Palms, we kicked off the Christmas season with a Christmas Tree Lighting in the Courtyard. Over 200 members were in attendance as we enjoyed Christmas carols by the Wesley United Methodist Church Choir and took pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Special thanks to Sgt. Howard of the Marines who assisted with our Toys for Tots donations. We'd like to thank all of our members who enjoyed the evening with us and make events like this so special.
Santa'sWorkshop
As part of our Christmas festivities, children had the opportunity to participate in a weekly Santa's Workshop. On Saturdays from November 26- December 17, children decorated their own gingerbread house as they enjoyed hot chocolate, cookies and watched a Christmas movie. At least 70 children came and participated and had so much fun getting to create their own unique gingerbread house. November 26

ChristmasMarket
This year's Christmas Market went off without a hitch. We had 14 vendors participate in our market selling everything from jewelry, paintings, floral arrangements, home goods, soaps and fragrances to apparel. We enjoyed the opportunity to showcase so many local artists to members and guests during the holiday season. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported these talented vendors. We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2023!

BOOK SIGNINGS BOOK SIGNINGS
One of the highlights from this past quarter has been being able to showcasing our members who are published authors with book signings at Sea Palms.
When we learned that fellow member, Robin Barnhardt, had just released her debuted inspirational how-to book, we knew she would be our first choice for a book signing with her book, See Life Through Rose Colored Glasses. Robin's book is about your personal perception and outlook on life and how to change your thought process to better benefit how you react to the world around you.
For our next book signing, we were thrilled to welcome a member who has written not one but seven novels in his career, John Stamp. John highlighted his recent release, Blood Red Ivory, a thriller crime novel about an NCSI agent who is sent to investigate a murder in Zimbabwe and not only has to avoid danger from the ivory smugglers he's up against, but enemies within headquarters as well. John also hosts That's Criminal with John Stamp podcast where he talks about true crimes and speaks to fellow authors and active-duty police to share their stories.
Be sure to check out our first book signing of the new year on Thursday, January 26 with Gary Olsen. Gary will discuss his book, 15 Geniuses Behind the Lens, a look at 15 accomplished movie directors and show clips of each director's films. Next, we will host a family-oriented book signing with Kristin S. Everson on Friday, February 10. Kristin will talk about her children's picture book, Fire Dog, a story of a puppy who sneaks off from a pet shelter to go on many adventures in a journey to find his name. Monday, March 13, Jingle Davis will be joining us.
