n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in the country. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

2007 Season preview

s the Seawolves embark on the 2007 season, they can relish the experience as the end of a maturation process. This will mark the fourth year of NCAA Division I membership for Alaska Anchorage, and head coach Paul Stoklos feels like his program is has come full-circle since its D-II days. “All of the athletes on this year’s team have been D-I gymnasts their entire careers,” said Stoklos, the only coach in the 22-year history of UAA Gymnastics. “There are no more labels. We are realistic about qualifying for NCAAs, but we also still have high goals — most importantly winning the MPSF Championships, getting as many dual victories as possible, and qualifying multiple individuals for the West Regional. To achieve success in 2007, Stoklos must get contributions from every member of his roster as four freshmen join six returners. While Stoklos admits this may be a youthful squad, he also knows that UAA’s individual skill levels are among the programís best ever. “I think that we are younger and a little less experienced, but that hopefully youíll see some things out of our freshmen, and we know we can depend on our veterans, especially our seniors,” Stoklos said. That pair of seniors — Rachael Lehmkuhl and Tiffany Staton — have been a consistent presence for the last three seasons and look forward to leadership roles in their final turns. “Rachael is motivated and driven to do gymnastics this year, more so than anybody on the team,” said Stoklos. “She wants her senior year to be huge and sheís really worked like crazy this summer, especially on bars, where we havenít used her in the past. She could certainly be one of our all-arounders this year.” Meanwhile, Staton has made steady progress through the fall as she returns from a knee injury that sidelined her for the second half of the 2006 season. The team co-captain has been a solid 3-event competitor throughout her career, with career-highs of 9.85 on bars and 9.825 on floor. Reigning MPSF all-around champ/ gymnast-of-the-year Jessica Portlock and 2-year-letterwinner Lauren Magiera form a talented junior class for UAA as well. Stoklos says Portlock has made incredible progress rehabbing the ankle injury she suffered at the West Regional meet in April and give the Seawolves another superb season.

“I think that if Jessica can get this (injury) back into competitive shape, she’ll be the same gymnast she was last spring, only more experienced,” he said. “As for Lauren, she has been ready and excited to compete since the first day of practice. Sheís been working on vault and could even be an all-arounder for us. Sheís a very competitive, driven person.” Sophomore Lauren Agostino is back as well, hoping to improve on a rookie season that saw her earn the first top-10 regional all-around finish in UAA history and win

the MPSF floor title. Walk-on sophomore Brooke Nall, who competed on vault, beam and floor in 2006, will serve as team co-captain along with Staton. The Seawolves’ freshman foursome is headed by Courtney Williams, who Stoklos says should join Agostino and Lehmkuhl as a solid all-around competitor. Meagan Byrne brings superior beam and floor skills, while Micki Cole and Nebraska transfer Alise Cecchini bring unlimited potential to the lineup.

he only gymnastics coach the University of Alaska Anchorage has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 23rd season in 2007. Over the past four seasons, Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I, and boosted the team’s talent to its highest level ever. In fact, the 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, The 2005 Seawolves set six school records, including dualmeet winning percentage, and produced four USAG All-America certificates as Stoklos captured his second consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year award. The previous season, the Seawolves won six USAG All-America certificates - including two individual national titles - and broke 16 school

Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a gymnastics coach as an undergraduate and grad assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years, helping to bring a fledgling program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at the University of Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981 and a master’s degree in exercise science in 1984. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol. He also enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos lives in Anchorage with his girlfriend, Kim Glover, and their three canine companions, Sam, a terrier mix, and German shepherds Buck and Mora. He is also a member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

TAMI MONETTE Assistant Coach ü 12th Season

n her 12th season as assistant coach for the Seawolf gymnastics team in 2007, Tami Monette has become an integral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Assistant Coach of the Year in 2006, repeating the honor she won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a competitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

ormer UAA gymnast Melissa Jabaay joins Coach Paul Stoklos’ staff in 2007 as a student assistant coach. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, she will concentrate on the finer points with the Seawolves on floor exercise. After competing for the Seawolves in 1999, the Birmingham, Ala., native has pursued a professional performing career, working as a dancer for three seasons in various productions at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va., and later becoming the dance supervisor in charge of casting, hiring, teaching and choreography. Jabaay (formerly Morgan) has performed in Australia, New Zealand and Italy as an Alabama Dance Ambassador and danced professionally in the Miss Alabama and Miss America Homecoming Productions. She is returning to Anchorage with her husband Aaron to pursue a degree from UAA in theatre with a dance emphasis.

ead athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 12th season with the UAA Athletic Department. Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of injuries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children -- Megan (19), Cody (17) and Casey (15).

AA graduate Nate Sagan is in his seventh as the primary media contact for the gymnastics program. After internships at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Oregon, Sagan returned to his alma mater in 1999 and assumed head SID duties three years later. In addition to serving as the media liaison for UAA’s 11 intercollegiate sports, he is also responsible for the department’s publications and the GoSeawolves.com website. The Kansas City, Mo., native earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and public communication from UAA in 1997, and he is a 1991 graduate of East Anchorage High School. He and his wife Christine are the parents of two daughters -Petula (4) and Daphne (1).

2006 in review/FACILITIES

he 2006 Seawolf gymnasts continued to establish UAA as a formidable Division I program, finishing with a 7-10 dual record and competing against the best schools in the nation. UAA’s most impressive victory came Feb. 26 with a 191.850-191.725 road upset of Western Michigan. In addition, the squad posted a fourmeet season sweep of league rival Air Force, and finished third of four teams at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. The Seawolf program hosted its first-ever tri-meet as 6th-ranked Nebraska came to town March 11, and the team visited some of nation’s biggest arenas at Michigan State, Boise State and Stanford. Sophomore Jessica Portlock earned several awards, including MPSF Gymnast of the Year, while she and freshman Lauren Agostino both competed as individual allarounders at the NCAA West Regional Portlock & Agostino on the Championships. Seawolf gymnasts also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. The Seawolves train off-campus at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility in Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclusive use of the AGA gym for proactice. The facility offers 12 competition beams, four sets of uneven bars and two spring floors, as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting, tumbling and bars. The gym includes almost 23,000 square feet of training space.

laine P. Maimon is Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage. The 200607 academic year is her third at UAA. Her vision for UAA includes the following principles: student success; increased strength in research, scholarship, and creative activity; the University as a public square; UAA as a destination for Alaska students, as well as for those from other states and countries; partnership between the Anchorage campus and the community campuses; cooperation among all University of Alaska campuses. Previously she was Provost (Chief Campus Officer) of Arizona State University West and Vice President of the multi-campus Arizona State University as a whole. Under Dr. Maimon’s leadership, ASU West grew from an upperdivision campus to a full four-year university offering broad-based opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students. Enrollment grew 77%, and the campus added residential facilities, exemplifying the best practices in living/learning communities. Dr. Maimon built the ASU West fund-raising enterprise from the ground up, and under her leadership the young campus was able to exceed its capital campaign goal. During Dr. Maimon’s tenure, ASU West created award-winning partnerships with the community and received national recognition (2002) from the Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) as the top campus in the nation in the area of public engagement. Dr. Maimon received all her degrees – B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English – from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year and later received her Ph. D. with distinction. She then served in a number of increasingly responsible teaching and administrative roles at Haverford College (Haverford, PA), Arcadia University (Glenside, PA), Brown University (Providence, RI), and Queens College (CUNY). Arcadia University (formerly known as Beaver College) annually presents the Elaine P. Maimon Award in writing to honor Dr. Maimon’s pioneering work in the field. She is married to Dr. Mort Maimon. Their daughter, Gillian, is a first-grade teacher and Ph.D. candidate in Philadelphia. Their son, Alan, is a journalist covering Eastern Kentucky for the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Director of Athletics

he 2006-07 season is Steve Cobb’s seventh as the athletic director at the Univer sity of Alaska Anchorage. Dr. Cobb became the school’s sixth AD when his hiring was announced Aug. 22, 2000. In his first six years at UAA, Dr. Cobb has made a mark on of the Seawolf program with several projects, chiefly the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and a refurbished fitness center at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. He has also been the driving force behind naming-rights agreements for the WFSC, Nye Frontier Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, Georgia Southwestern began planning and received funds for building the Student Success Center, a $22 million facility that will house the school’s basketball teams and athletic offices. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the American Football Coaches Association. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

bout 260,000 people call Anchor age home. The city’s boundary is nearly the same size as the state of Delaware. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city, an international air crossroads and the business center of the state. More than 230 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports many lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, outdoor tennis and

basketball courts and six scenic golf courses in the area. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s socalled banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the win-

laska is the largest state in the union - one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of Lakes, boasting more than 10,000 lakes, Alaska has more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. Alaska is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.

In addition, black bears, grizzly bears, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, dall sheep and bald eagles all make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a past-time to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

ACADEMICS The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving more than 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian chain. Academic units located on the Anchorage campus include the College of Arts and Sciences; College of Technical and Community Education; College of Health Education and Social Welfare; College of Business and Public Policy, and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree. ATHLETICS Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in hockey and gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including basketball, volleyball, skiing, track & field, and cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament – recognized as one of the top inseason tournaments in the nation – as well as the Nye Frontier Classic hockey tournament. Over the last three decades, the University of Alaska Anchorage has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 112 Seawolves have earned All-America honors since 1984 and UAA has produced several individual national champions. UAA athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom.The entire UAA Athletic Department has compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 10 of the last 13 years. Through the years, UAA has produced several Academic All-Americans.
