UAA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES TOM BESH
INDUCTED 2001 A native of Anchroage, Besh’s accomplishments as UAA’s first full-time ski coach are legendary, a position in which he served from 1977-90. He moved on to serve as chair of UAA’s physical education department, a position he held until his untimely death in an airplane accidnet in 1993 at the age of 45. As head ski coach at UAA for 13 years, his teams produced one national championship, 19 AllAmericans and numerous top-10 NCAA Championship finishes. His 1979 women’s ski team captured the AIAW national ski championships. The AIAW was a women’s intercollegate athletic association that later merged with the NCAA. Judy Ziemiak, a member of that national team, would later become Besh’s wife. Besh received his bachelor’s degree in 1971 from Western State College in Colorado where he earned All-American honors as a skier. Besh earned his master’s of education degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1977 and also did graduate work at the University of Oslo in Norway. A onetime member of the U.S. Ski Team, Besh frequently served as U.S. Ski Association’s Alaska Division coach and was an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Nordic team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. Instrumental in the formation in many local events, including the Crow Pass Crossing, the Seawolf Triathlon and the Tom Besh Homestead Hill Run, Besh was a three-time winner of the Deward Mount Marathon Race. He is survived by his wife Judy and two daughters, Kendra and Leah.
PAUL CREWS
INDUCTED 2002 For two decades, Paul Crews (1982-2001) was the bedrock of an Alaska Anchorage program that has been one of the most consistent winners in collegiate skiing. Following a collegiate career at Western State, he earned a spot on the World Cup downhill tour in 1971-72, becoming the first Alaskan to qualify for the U.S. Ski Team. Crews rejoined the national team as a coach in 1980, and two years later he returned to join the Seawolves as an alpine assistant to fellow Hall of Famer Tom Besh. The 1990 season would be the first of Crews’ 11 seasons as head coach, with the team never placing worse than 10th at NCAA’s. In 1991, the Seawolves produced the first of five national cha, pions under his watch when Stig Matsson claimed the 20K classical title. Izidor Jerman became the first UAA alpiner to earn a national title with slalom win in 1997 - one of three Seawolves to win individual crowns that year. Crews’ team skied to a school-record fifth-place finish at the 1993 NCAA Championships and equaled that feat in 1997 and 1998. Individually, 48 Seawolves claimed All-American honors under his tutelage. Before retiring from the program in 2001, he was instrumental in landing the 2002 NCAA Skiing Championships that UAA hosted at Kincaid Park and Alyeska Ski Resort. It was the second time Cr3ews helped UAA earn an NCAA host role (1987) and it ended in triumph as his former recruit, Aurore de Maulmont, became the first UAA alpine woman to win a national title. Along with his accomplishments at UAA, Crews also worked with former Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe during his heyday in the early 1990s. As the director of the Alyeska Ski Club, he helped host the U.S. National Alpine Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2009. He and his wife Barbara have three children, Abigail, Laura and Nicholas.
UAA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES TIINA HOFFMAN
INDUCTED 2004 The heart and soul of the Nordic ski team for over a decade, Tiina (Kantola) Hoffman [1981-85, 1988-92] becomes the second multisport athlete to gain induction into the Hall. Hoffman came to Alaska as an 18-year-old freshman from Viermaki, Finland, and went on to become one of a handful eight-time letterwinners at UAA. In addition to earning four straight trips to the NCAA Ski Championships, she was also one of the top runners on the cross country team every year. In 1985, she earned the distinction of becoming UAA’s first Athlete of the Year, as well as winning the Dresser Cup – then known as the Dean’s Cup – as the top overall Seawolf student-athlete in terms of grade point average. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, she went on to coach at the high school level, and joined the UAA staff in 1988. From 1990-92 she served as the head Nordic coach, helping the Seawolves capture eight All-America certificates and an individual national champion in her two seasons at the helm. In 1996, Hoffman earned her master’s of science degree in exercise physiology and coaching from the University of Jyvaskyla in her home country. She has also gained official certification as a vocational teacher and translator. Hoffman and her husband Dave, also a former UAA skier, currently live in Jyvaskyla with their two sons, Ville Thomas (8) and Veikko Michael (5)
MANDY KAEMPF
INDUCTED 2016 A heralded recruit when she arrived from her native Germany, Mandy Kaempf [2003-06] wasted little time proving she was an elite skier at the college level, finishing runner-up at the 2003 NCAA Championships in the 5-kilometer classical race. By the time she was done, Kaempf would leave as the undisputed top collegiate Nordic racer in the nation and one of the best all-around athletes in UAA history, excelling in cross country and track & field as well. And while she was among the fastest on the track and running trails, Kaempf was absolutely dominant on the snow, adding two more NCAA runner-up finishes, along with two conference titles and five individual wins in her 2004 ski campaign. As a senior in 2005, she would reach the pinnacle of her sport, sweeping the NCAA national titles in the 5K classical and 15K freestyle and winning a second straight RMISA classical crown. Although limited to three years of eligibility in skiing, Kaempf suited up for four straight cross country campaigns, emerging as the Seawolves’ No. 1 or 2 runner and earning All-GNAC honors every season. As a sophomore and junior she placed among the top-50 at the national meet, helping UAA to its first two team appearances at the NCAA Championships, including a 12th-place finish in 2005. She placed third at the GNAC Championships as a junior and was runner-up as a senior, helping UAA to three straight second-place finishes. In the spring of 2006, Kaempf turned her skills to the track, where she became just the second Seawolf woman to earn All-America honors in that sport, placing seventh in the 5,000 meters at the NCAAs. She was also the GNAC outdoor champion in the 5,000 and recorded the league’s second-best time in the 10,000 meters. At the end of eight competitive seasons, Kaempf’s six All-America awards stood as the second-most in UAA history, and she is still the only person to earn the honor in both skiing and track & field. Her other major awards as a Seawolf included the 2004-05 Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year, the 2006-07 GNAC Woman of the Year, and the 2005-06 Dresser Cup – the athletic department’s highest academic honor. Still one of only six two-time Academic All-Americans at UAA, she graduated magna cum laude in Dec. 2006, carrying a 3.87 GPA as a double-major in sociology and history. Kaempf stayed with the Seawolves as an assistant Nordic ski coach until 2011, when she earned her master’s in project management from UAA’s School of Engineering. An avid and active traveler, she works today as a senior management consultant for a major European IT consulting company in Munich, Germany.
UAA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES BRITTA KJELLSTRAND
INDUCTED 2002 Bursting on the scene in 1978 and not slowing down for four years, Britta Kjellstrand left her mark on UAA Athletics with five All-America certificates and a national title. Although she also ran cross country all four seasons, she was best known for her Nordic skiing exploits. The Hedemora, Sweden, native began her college career in 1979 by becoming UAA’s first individual national champion in any sport, winning the gold medal at the AIAW (then the governing body of women’s collegiate sports) national meet. Kjellstrand anchored UAA’s gold medal-winning relay team in that meet, boosting UAA to the team title as well. In 1980, she took silver in both the individual and relay races, and as a senior she anchored UAA’s third-place relay team. Known for her fiery spirit and team dedication, Kjellstrand was also an excellent student. She earned numerous academic honors, including the 1979 Broderick Award, presented by the AIAW for success on the playing field and in the classroom. Since graduating from UAA in 1983 with a bachelor’s in education, Kjellstrand has stayed active in her community, starting a scholarship fund, working on a beautification project for the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, and coaching peewee hockey. Currently a deputy sheriff in Los Angeles County, Kjellstrand has a son, Logan Johannes Harrington.
ZUZANA (RAZUSOVA) ROGERS
INDUCTED 2001 One of the most consistent Seawolves ever to hit the slopes, Zuzana (Razusova) Rogers [1995-98] becomes the first Alpine skier to enter the Seawolf Hall of Fame with her induction this year. The native of Liptovsky, Slovakia, was a three-time All-American, capturing honors in the slalom as a freshman and junior, and in the giant slalom as a senior. As a junior in 1997, Rogers helped the ski team to its then-best placing at the NCAA Championships as the Seawolves finished fifth in the nation. UAA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES TOBIAS SCHWOERER
INDUCTED 2013 From the time he premiered in a Seawolf uniform, Tobias Schwoerer [2000-03] continued to raise the bar for success in both of his sports. A five-time All-American in Nordic skiing and the program’s first-ever All-American in cross country, Schwoerer became the second Seawolf to earn at least six such honors, doing so in just three years. The native of Lenzkirch, Germany, was also the second student-athlete to twice be selected UAA’s Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year and is still the only one to do it consecutively. After becoming the men’s cross country program’s first individual NCAA qualifier in 2000, Schwoerer followed by leading the Seawolves to their first-ever team berth in 2001, where he claimed All-America honors with a 35th-place finish. In his final season, he anchored a Seawolf squad that finished No. 12 in the nation and won the program’s first Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. On the ski trails, Schwoerer placed 7th or higher in five of his six career appearances at the NCAA Championships, ending with a pair of 3rd-place showings as a senior in 2003. With a 4th-place finish in the 20K freestyle and a 5th-place finish in the 10K classical at the 2002 NCAA Skiing Championships, became the first male Division II athlete to earn the running-skiing All-America double in the same year. Schwoerer posted three regular-season victories in his final ski campaign, including the 2003 NCAA West Region title in the 15K classical, as he found the podium in nine of his 11 races. A star in the classroom as well, Schwoerer was a First Team Academic All-American and was named the GNAC’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2001-02. In 2002-03, he also earned UAA’s prestigious Dresser Cup as the Seawolves’ top overall student with a 3.90 GPA. Schwoerer earned a B.A. in economics from UAA in 2003 and added an M.S. in resource management from Simon Fraser University in 2007. A former champion of both Mount Marathon and Crow Pass Crossing, Schwoerer still lives in Anchorage and works for UAA’s Institute of Social and Economic Research, where he focuses on analyzing economic concerns related to eco-system services and energy options for rural Alaska. He and his wife Darcy were married in 2010 and have a son, Suvan.
ERIC STRABEL
INDUCTED 2014 Known now as a highly decorated mountain runner, Eric Strabel [2000-04] came of age as an elite athlete at the University of Alaska Anchorage, recording stellar 4-year careers on both the cross country running and Nordic ski trails. In the fall of 2001, the Colony High School grad spearheaded the first Seawolf men’s cross country team to qualify for the NCAA Championships, while earning both All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference and All-West Region finishes. The next fall Strabel continued to help the Seawolves break new ground as they won the cross country program’s first-ever conference team title and yet another trip to the NCAA Championships, where they finished a solid 12th place with him leading the way. \ When the snow hit, Strabel was an equally dangerous competitor, earning three All-America honors and regularly posting top-10 finishes throughout his career. As a sophomore in 2002 he was the NCAA runner-up in the 20-kilometer freestyle race and placed 6th in the 10K classical, along with All-Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and All-West Region accolades. His junior and senior seasons brought more NCAA qualifications as he helped UAA continue a two-decade run of top-10 team finishes, returning to All-America status in the 20K classical as a senior. Strabel earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 2005 and worked for three years in the field before dedicating himself full-time to coaching. Currently a coach with the Alaska Pacific University ski program, he has become one of the greatest mountain runners in Alaska history, winning three Mount Marathon and two Crow Pass Crossing titles, and becoming the first person to break the 3-hour barrier in the Matanuska Peak Challenge. In 2014, he was also honored by the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame with its Pride of Alaska Award.
