2019 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES GYMNASTICS
TANYA HO Head Coach 2nd Season
F
ormerly an Alaska Anchorage opponent as a competitor and coach at Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals UC Davis and Sacramento State, Tanya Ho took over the reins of the UAA program for the 2018 season, becoming just the second head coach in 34 years of Seawolf Gymnastics history. In her first season, Ho helped an injuryladen UAA squad make improvements throughout the campaign, posting season-high totals in the last three meets. In addition to outstanding seasons for senior Kendra Daniels and sophomore all-arounder Mackenzie Miller, the Seawolves produced the program’s first MPSF Freshman of the Year in all-arounder Isabelle Fox, and fellow rookie Hope Nelson tied the program record with a 9.713 bars average. Ho came north after helping guide Sacramento State to a pair of MPSF team titles from 2013-17. Working under head coaches Kim Hughes and Randy Solorio, her tenure produced 11 NCAA Regional individual qualifiers, 47 academic all-conference honorees, and the MPSF individual all-around champion in 2016. As the Hornets’ balance beam coach from 2013-15 and their uneven bars coach from 2016-17, she also directly mentored 2017 MPSF bars champion Caitlin Soliwoda, 2016 NCAA Regional bars qualifier Cassie Benning, 2014 MPSF beam champion Elideth Guerrero, and three NCAA Regional beam qualifiers. In 2016, she was voted by her peers as the MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year, and later that year was inducted into the UC Davis Hall of Fame. The Elk Grove, California, native was the first gymnast in Aggies history to qualify three straight years for NCAA Regionals and the second to reach the regional meet as an all-arounder in back-to-back years. The 2010 MPSF Gymnast of the Year as a senior, she finished with 13 career all-conference awards, nine MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors, and became the third gymnast in program history to crack the 39-point barrier when she won the MPSF individual all-around title in 2008. Ho graduated from UC Davis in 2010 with her bachelor of science in exercise biology and served as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater for two seasons before joining the staff at Sacramento State.
MARIE-SOPHIE BOGGASCH Graduate Assistant Coach 1st Season
F
ormer Alaska Anchorage standout MarieSophie Boggasch rejoins the Seawolves for her first season as a graduate assistant coach in 2018-19. A four-year letterwinner (2013-16), the native of Schwarzenbach am Wald, Germany, competed on vault, bars and floor exercise for UAA, helping the Seawolves break school records for team season average and RQS as both a junior and senior. A three-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Team honoree, she tied for runner-up on uneven bars at the 2015 MPSF Championships. Boggasch graduated from UAA with a 4.00 grade-point average in 2016, earning her bachelor’s degree in aviation technology.

ALINA CARTWRIGHT Assistant Coach 3rd Season
I
llinois native Alina Cartwright returns to the Seawolf staff for her third season in 2019 and her second as the program’s top assistant coach. In her first season at UAA, she helped the Seawolves twice break the program’s team record on balance beam, and coached individual beam recordbreakers Kendra Daniels and MPSF beam co-champion Sophia Hyderally. In 2018, she helped ease the transition for head coach Tanya Ho’s first campaign as UAA improved its team scores throughout the year, and she aided the development of MPSF Freshman of the Year Isabelle Fox. After completing her competitive career at Michigan State in 2015, Cartwright served as a student assistant for the Spartans in 2016, helping the team qualify for the NCAA Championships. Cartwright was a 4-year letterwinner at MSU, where she earned First Team All-Big Ten Conference honors as a junior in 2014. She sprung a career-high all-around of 39.125 in 2013 and was a member of the Spartans’ 2012 squad that qualified for the NCAA Championships. Originally from Naperville, Ill., she is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in advertising from MSU in 2016.

T
he Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-12, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected colleges and universities in the western United States, providing championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. In women’s gymnastics, the league expanded back to six institutions in 2014 as former members Sacramento State and San Jose State rejoined Air Force, Alaska Anchorage, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation, to contain the costs of competition, and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. It has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In 2018-19, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 10 intercollegiate Olympic sports, while serving 84 teams from 41 universities across 12 states. All MPSF members compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s lacrosse, and men’s volleyball. MPSF team champions are eligible to compete in the NCAA Championships, with men’s and women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, and women’s lacrosse champions earning automatic qualification.

THE SEAWOLF
n the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage has one of the more unique mascots in collegiate sports. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977. The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature. According to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

The Municipality of Anchorage A
laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage
also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,
local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

The State of Alaska A
laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second-largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than 3 million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.
