2018-19 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2018-19 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2

W

ith a 124-12 record since 2014-15 and four consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season titles, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team appears loaded for another banner season in 2018-19. Returning four starters from last year’s 27-5 squad, including First Team All-GNAC center Hannah Wandersee, the Seawolves will again be among the favorites to vie for the GNAC, NCAA Div. II West Region and national titles. “We have the potential to be something very special this year,” said 7th-year head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose 2017-18 team came just two free throws shy of advancing to its second NCAA Elite Eight in three seasons. “With two fifth-year seniors and a fourth-year junior running the point, it should be easier to transition the new players into our sytem, which is usually our biggest challenge.” The two remaining active players from UAA’s 2016 NCAA Runner-up squad, Wandersee and senior guard Tara Thompson bring a combined 204 games of experience, along with 1,497 points and 693 rebounds. After ending last year with all-tourney honors at the West Regional Championships, Wandersee is a solid All-America candidate in her final campaign, while Thompson has a chance to finish as UAA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made. Three more veterans give the Seawolves perhaps the nation’s deepest backcourt, with former transfers Kian McNair (6.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.7 spg) and Sydni Stallworth (5.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.2 apg) back for their senior campaigns, alongside All-GNAC honorable mention junior point guard Yazmeen Goo, who finished among the national leaders in both assists and steals last year. The three sophomore returners also made a splash in their rookie seasons, led by former Bay Area prep star Sala Langi, who was the team’s second-leading rebounder with 4.1 rpg. Local products Nicole Pinckney, a 5-5 guard from Chugiak, and Tennae Voliva, a 6-0 center from East Anchorage, also figure to contribute more. Never ones to rest on past successes, McCarthy and his staff bring in another high-caliber recruiting class, led by Div. I transfers Cameron Fernandez (Washington State) and Jeneva Toilolo (New Mexico State). Both players figure to contribute immediately in the frontcourt. Junior guards Victoria Langi and Safiyyah Yasin are ready to make their debuts after redshirting last year, while true freshmen Kimani Fernandez-Roy and Jahnna Hajdukovich got much-needed collegiate experience during UAA’s July trip to Taiwan.

LEFT: Junior point guard Yazmeen Goo earned honorable men on All-GNAC honors last year with 8.5 points, 4.3 assists and a league-leading 2.9 steals per game. BELOW: Senior guard Kian McNair is a candidate for GNAC defensive player of the year and one of four returning starters from last season’s 27-5 club.

RIGHT: Senior center Hannah Wandersee is an All-America candidate a er pos ng 14.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and a GNAC-leading 1.5 blocks per game in 2017-18.

Head Coach RYAN McCARTHY

O

ne of the brightest coaching talents in the NCAA ranks, Ryan McCarthy is in his seventh year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage program in 201819, having already taken the Seawolves to unprecedented heights. An Anchorage native, McCarthy has led his hometown program to the second-most wins and second-best winning percentage in NCAA Div. II over the past four campaigns with a 124-12 record, capturing four Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and three postseason tournament titles. UAA has also ascended to No. 1 in the national poll for eight weeks and reached the 2016 NCAA National Title Game. Following a 29-2 campaign in 2014-15, UAA recorded a 38-3 mark in 2015-16 to set a new NCAA Div. II standard for victories in a season – among five NCAA records broken by that year’s club. In 201617, McCarthy repeated as the NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year and was the GNAC Coach of the Year, piloting UAA to a 30-2 overall record and the first 20-0 GNAC campaign in league history. Most recently, McCarthy took a Seawolf team that had lost four starters and earned a 27-5 record and repeat GNAC Coach of the Year honors. The 2017-18 Seawolves went 18-2 in the GNAC to tie for their fourth straight league title, won the GCI Great Alaska Shootout with two victories over Div. I programs, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament ‘Sweet 16’ for the second time under McCarthy. Playing his program’s signature up-tempo ‘Mayhem’ style, the Seawolves led NCAA Div. II in steals per game for four straight seasons from 2013-14 to 2016-17, while regularly producing top-5 ranks in scoring margin, scoring offense, scoring defense, assists, turnovers forced and turnover margin. After taking the reins in 2012, McCarthy’s teams improved their overall victory total (17, 19, 29, 38) for four straight seasons and their GNAC victory total (11, 12, 17,

18, 20) for five straight years – figures that don’t even include an exhibition road win over Pacific-12 Conference foe Utah and a home exhibition win over D-I Tulsa.. In 2013-14, McCarthy’s Seawolves finished 19-9 overall and made the NCAA playoffs for the first time under his leadership. UAA led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and was the highest-scoring team in the GNAC at nearly 80 points per contest. Despite a shortened roster, McCarthy’s first Seawolf squad rallied for a seven-game win streak to close the 2012-13 regular season at 17-10 overall and a 3rd-place tie in the final GNAC standings at 11-7. In six seasons under McCarthy, the Seawolves have produced 13 1st- or 2ndteam All-GNAC honorees, 19 Academic All-GNAC performers, and seen five players ascend to the professional ranks. Teamwise, UAA has posted victories over six

NCAA Div. I teams, eight wins over NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams, and an 8-5 NCAA Tournament record. Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent five seasons at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene from 2007-12. At NNU, he served as an assistant, interim head coach and associate head coach, helping the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament berths and a .633 winning percentage. In 2010-11, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach and led the Crusaders to a 14-13 record and a bid to the inaugural GNAC Tournament. In 2011-12, McCarthy was named associate head coach and helped pilot NNU to an 18-10 season. McCarthy played professionally for Tus Bramsche in Bramsche, Germany, in 2006-07, where he led the league in three-pointers and free throw percentage. He spent 2006 with the Central Oregon Hotshots of the International Basketball League, averaging 16 points, four assists and four rebounds per game. A 4-year starter and 3-year captain for the Crusaders from 2002-06, McCarthy was NNU’s Orrin Hills Male Athlete of the Year for 2005-06. He ranks third in program history with 256 treys over his career, setting the then-GNAC single-season record with 102 three pointers in 2005-06. Overall he posted 1,161 career points for the Crusaders. McCarthy graduated from NNU in 2006 with a B.S. in social science education. He is the father of two young children, Donovan and Aurora.

SHAINA AFOA Associate Head Coach 7th Season

A

ssociate head coach Shaina Afoa returns to the Seawolf coaching staff for her seventh season in 2018-19, and her fourth as the program’s top assistant. Since joining Ryan McCarthy’s staff, the Anchorage native has helped the Seawolves to a 160-31 overall record, five straight NCAA Tournaments, four straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season titles and three GNAC Tournament titles. On the heels of UAA’s NCAA ‘Sweet 16’ run and 27-5 mark last season, the Anchorage native was voted by her Women’s Basketball Coaches Assocation peers as the 2017-18 NCAA Div. II National Assistant Coach of the Year. In Afoa’s first year as the lead assistant coach, UAA captured the 2015-16 NCAA West Region title and earned its first-ever berth in the National Title Game, while in 2016-17 she contributed to a record-breaking Seawolf squad that finished 30-2 and earned the first 20-0 league record in GNAC history. In March 2017 she was named to the prestigious Thirty Under 30 list of up-and-coming coaches by the WBCA. In addition to administrative and recruiting duties, Afoa has been a key to the development and success of UAA’s post players, working with such recent allleague standouts as Alysa Horn, Hannah Wandersee and All-American Megan Mullings. Afoa was a three-sport athlete at GNAC rival Central Washington from 200611, lettering four times in both basketball and track & field, plus once in volleyball. A three-year starter at center, she finished No. 2 on the Wildcats’ career list for blocks with 126, plus fourth in rebounds (599), sixth in games started (79) and 10th in field-goal percentage (.461). A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High School, Afoa earned her bachelor’s degree in Art/Graphic Design from CWU in 2011 and her graduate certificate in Human Services from UAA in 2014.

SIERRA AFOA Assistant Coach 1st Season

F

ormer Seawolf standout Sierra Afoa returns to the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program in 2018-19 to begin her coaching career under mentor Ryan McCarthy. A three-year letterwinner and four-year squad member, Afoa played in 102 games at power forward from 2014-17, helping the Seawolves to a combined 97-7 record – the best in NCAA Div. II over that span – and three straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles. She averaged 4.5 points and was the third-leading rebounder (4.6 rpg) for the UAA team that went 38-3 and reached the national title game in 2015-16, and she led the Seawolves with 4.7 boards per contest in her final season, starting 29 games for a 30-2 squad. A two-time GNAC All-Academic Team selection, Afoa graduated with cum laude honors in 2017 with her bachelor’s degree in social work.

ocated in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 17-year history. Founded in July 2001, GNAC teams have had over 100 NCAA Division II top-10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports that it sponsors. During the 2017-18 year, the GNAC saw 14 teams advance to national postseason competition, with the conference’s greatest success coming in cross country and track & field. The Alaska Anchorage women’s cross country program led the way with a 5th-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships. The Seawolves were led by Caroline Kurgat, who won the individual cross country national title and went on to win championships during the outdoor track season in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Kurgat was named the Division II winner of the Honda Award by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards. Western Oregon’s men finished 6th at the 2018 Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, while the conference advanced three women’s basketball teams to regional competition, including an all-GNAC West Region final between UAA and Montana State Billings. During the fall of 2017, Central Washington became just the second team in GNAC football history to finish the regular season undefeated and earned the No. 1 seed in Super Region 4 of the NCAA Championships, and the league advanced at least four teams for the second year in a row – and third time in the last four years – to the NCAA West Regional Volleyball Championships. GNAC teams have won four national championships (Seattle U., men’s soccer, 2004; Seattle Pacific, women’s soccer, 2008; Western Washington, men’s basketball, 2012, and women’s soccer, 2016), while UAA has been responsible for two of the league’s six NCAA runner-up finishes, with 2nd-place efforts in women’s basketball (2016) and volleyball (2016). UAA’s 29 top-10 national finishes in GNAC sports since 2001 are also the most among GNAC institutions. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

The Municipality of Anchorage A

laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage

also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,

local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

The State of Alaska A

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second-largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than 3 million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.

Behind the scenes, UAA student-athletes from all 13 sports utilize the Center’s high-tech sports medicine and weight training facilities, which include a HydroWorx hydrotherapy pool with underwater treadmill and an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill.
