2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW

2018-19 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES MEN’S BASKETBALL

2

W

ith four letterwinners returning from last year’s team that went 15-14 overall and tied for fourth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the 2018-19 Alaska Anchorage basketball team will take on a decidedly new look. Along with another returning veteran and one redshirt, head coach Rusty Osborne and his staff have added six impact newcomers, hoping to surpass the expectations of their 5th-place prediction in the GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. With just 27 percent of the team’s scoring and 30 percent of the rebounding back from last year, senior Brian Pearson will be heavily relied upon as the most experienced Seawolf, with 63 career appearances and 23 starts. Pearson had a breakout season in 2017-18, posting 7.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg and ranking 6th in the GNAC with 1.3 bpg. The Nevada native begins the season in 9th place on UAA’s career blocks list with 57. Junior guard Jack Macdonald, sophomore guard Brennan Rymer and sophomore forward Eric Jenkins are all back for their second seasons in Green & Gold. Rymer ranked 14th in the GNAC with a 1.7 assist/turnover ratio and 20th with 2.1 apg as a freshman. UAA also gets a lift on the interior with the return of junior forward Sjur Berg, who is back after spending a sabbatical year at home in Norway. With career averages of 3.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg, Berg has seen action in 58 games. The Seawolves will look for big production from their cast of newcomers this season, led by a pair of players with Div. I experience. Junior wing Tyler Brimhall is UAA’s representative on the Preseason All-GNAC Team and the lone newcomer to make that squad, coming north after helping North Idaho College to the NWAC title in 2017-18. Brimhall also spent two seasons at D-I Idaho, where he redshirted in 2015-16. Junior forward Niko Bevens took a similar path to UAA after playing as a freshman on North Idaho’s NWAC East Division title team and transfering to D-I Montana as a sophomore. Bevens shot nearly 50 percent (110 of 221) from three-point range as a freshman at NIC. Sophomore guard Keenan Dowell is the latest international addition to UAA’s program, with the Canadian combo guard transferring from Sheridan (Wyo.) College, where he helped his team to a 28-5 mark as a true freshman. After serving as team manager last year, senior guard Matt Seymour has gained full playing eligibility and will suit up for the first time since 2014-16 at Whatcom (Wash.) Community College. Seymour was his team’s second-leading scorer and shot .436 on threes as a sophomore. Three rookies also get their first shot at college ball, including the last two Alaska Gatorade Players of the Year – redshirt fresh-

Point guard Brennan Rymer was among the GNAC leaders in assists and assist/ turnover ra o as a true freshman, pos ng a 10-assist game against Saint Mar n’s.

man forward Austin White (Ninilchik) and true freshman guard Tobin Karlberg (Anchorage/Grace Christian). Freshman guard Travis Adams is just the second player from Barrow ever to suit up for the Seawolves, having helped the Whalers to three state titles in his four prep seasons.

Senior post Brian Pearson is the Seawolves’ leading returning scorer and rebounder, and ranks among the top shot blockers in program history.

Junior guard Jack Macdonald started 16 games and scored double figures four mes in his first year as a Seawolf.

fter leading UAA to 13 straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tourney appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 254-136 (.651) over the past 13 years, including victories over 12 Division I teams and 15 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the second-best winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2016-17 campaign was Osborne’s fifth with 21 or more victories. During his head coaching tenure, Osborne’s squads have also produced six All-Americans (including 2012 Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY Taylor Rohde), three CoSIDA/ Capital One Academic All-Americans, 10 All-West Region performers and 22 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first- or second-team honorees, while 21 Seawolves have moved on to play professionally. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the GNAC Coach of the Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to

Osborne’s teams have also gained a reputation for defense, leading the GNAC in points allowed in seven of his 14 seasons. From 1991-2004, Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns’ chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons (1988-91) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. II West Region regional advisory committee and a member of the D-II national committee, representing the West. He has also been the GNAC representative to the NABC National Congress for the last six years. Before making the move to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year at the prep level as an assistant coach at Hyde Park Baptist in Austin, Texas, helping the team to a 36-8 finish and a state title. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned a master’s degree in educational administration two years later from Southwest Texas. yan Orton returns to the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball staff in 2018-19 as the program’s top assistant coach, marking his fifth season overall with the Seawolves. Orton came back north in 2017 after a 5-year stint as the head coach at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo., where he led the Mustangs to winning seasons in his last three campaigns, including 21- and 22-win seasons and NJCAA Region IX playoff berths in 2014-15 and 2015-16. In his first stint with the Seawolves, Orton made an impact by securing commitments from three former Alaska Players-of-theYear, plus a long list of Lower 48 prep and junior-college standouts. In 2011-12, former recruit Taylor Rohde was the GNAC Player of the Year and Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year for the Seawolves. Orton coached at D-I program Montana State from 2006-08, where he was responsible for both recruiting and team academic development, while serving as position coach for post players. In his time with the Bobcats, the team had a 100 percent graduation rate, produced five Academic All-Big Sky honorees and earned the athletic department’s 2006-07 Allison Award, given to the MSU team whose overall GPA improves most from one year to the next. At conference rival Northwest Nazarene from 2004-06, Orton was involved in every facet of the program from on-court instruction and scouting to scheduling and fund-raising. He also proved one of the GNAC’s top young recruiters, signing the league’s 2007 Newcomer of the Year and the 2006 Idaho High School State Player of the Year. Orton directed the program at Lane (Ore.) Community College in 2003-04, where his team led the NWAC South Region in points per game and ranked third overall among 36 league programs. Orton got his start in college coaching at D-I Eastern Washington from 1998-2003, serving on the staff that produced the Big Sky Conference’s best overall record over four seasons (2000-03). He earned a B.S. in health and physical education from Eastern Oregon and his masters in physical education from Eastern Washington in 2001. As a player at EOU, he was the 1996 team MVP and captain, earning honorable mention All-Cascade Conference honors. He also played collegiately at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore., from 1991-93.

hane Rinner returns to the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball staff in 2018-19 as an assistant coach. An Anchorage native, Rinner was the Seawolves’ assistant and associate head coach from 2003-09, helping UAA to a 11367 record and four NCAA Tournaments – including a national semifinals finish in 2008 – during his six seasons. In 2009, Rinner was hired as the head coach at fellow NCAA Div. II program Texas A&M International, where he coached for three seasons, leading the Dustdevils to their first Heartland Conference title. After serving as director of women’s basketball operations at Div. I Fresno State in 2012-13, he took over as men’s head coach at D-II Fresno Pacific for the following two seasons. A former all-state prep player at Anchorage Christian School, Rinner has previous coaching experience at the NCAA Division I, NAIA, junior college and professional levels. From 1994-96, he coached at his alma mater, NAIA Biola (Calif.) University, and returned there for a second stint from 2000-02. From 1996-98, he worked at Division I Liberty University in Virginia, before moving on to Marshalltown (Iowa) Junior College in 1998-99. In 1999-2000, he was the head coach for the Glostrup Giants in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rinner played two seasons at Biola, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1996. He also played two seasons at Southwestern (Calif.) Junior College. He and his wife Amanda are the proud parents of four children.

ocated in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 17-year history. Founded in July 2001, GNAC teams have had over 100 NCAA Division II top-10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports that it sponsors. During the 2017-18 year, the GNAC saw 14 teams advance to national postseason competition, with the conference’s greatest success coming in cross country and track & field. The Alaska Anchorage women’s cross country program led the way with a 5th-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships. The Seawolves were led by Caroline Kurgat, who won the individual cross country national title and went on to win championships during the outdoor track season in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Kurgat was named the Division II winner of the Honda Award by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards. Western Oregon’s men finished 6th at the 2018 Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, while the conference advanced three women’s basketball teams to regional competition, including an all-GNAC West Region final between UAA and Montana State Billings. During the fall of 2017, Central Washington became just the second team in GNAC football history to finish the regular season undefeated and earned the No. 1 seed in Super Region 4 of the NCAA Championships, and the league advanced at least four teams for the second year in a row – and third time in the last four years – to the NCAA West Regional Volleyball Championships. GNAC teams have won four national championships (Seattle U., men’s soccer, 2004; Seattle Pacific, women’s soccer, 2008; Western Washington, men’s basketball, 2012, and women’s soccer, 2016), while UAA has been responsible for two of the league’s six NCAA runner-up finishes, with 2nd-place efforts in women’s basketball (2016) and volleyball (2016). UAA’s 29 top-10 national finishes in GNAC sports since 2001 are also the most among GNAC institutions. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

The Municipality of Anchorage A

laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage

also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,

local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

The State of Alaska A

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second-largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than 3 million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.
