Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Having firmly established themselves among the nation’s elite track & field programs, the Seawolves did not disappoint again in 2013. Led by All-Americans Susan Tanui, Ruth Keino and Karolin Anders, the women’s team finished a program-best seventh at the NCAA Championships, while the men’s team finished 16th with the All-America javelin duo of Franz Burghagen and national champion Cody Parker. On the conference circuit, the Seawolf women captured their first-ever league championship as they became only the second GNAC school ever to sweep the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field titles. Sprinter Grace Morgan, Anders and Keno both earned two league titles, while Cody Thomas captured UAA’s first decathlon crown on the men’s side.

Volleyball The volleyball team extended the program record with its fifth straight winning season, finishing 16-10 overall. The Seawolves went 11-7 for 4th place in the GNAC to mark their fourth consecutive winning record and top-4 league finish. After putting together a 5-match win streak in September and capturing their own SpringHill Suites Invitational championship, they forged a 5-2 mark in October. Individually, UAA produced the GNAC’s Newcomer of the Year with Jodi Huddleston, while Julia Mackey shared the league’s Freshman of the Year award. Mackey and Kimya Jafroudi were both voted to All-GNAC, with Huddleston gaining honorable-mention status.

A

t the University of Alaska Anchorage, we take great pride in the academic achievements of our studentathletes. On the average UAA student-athletes have maintained a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0 in 16 of the past 19 years — well ahead of the norm for all students — including a record 3.20 overall GPA for calendar year 2012. Seawolf Corporate Sponsors have had a direct bearing on our academic success, including the donation of laptop computers for student-athletes to use during road trips.

UAA’s Emily Petersen tied for the highest GPA among all Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s gymnastics competitors in 2013.

UAA Faculty Athletic Representative Steve Strom presents the 2012-13 Dresser Cup — the Seawolves’ highest departmental academic honor — to senior Alpine skier Ida Bjerka. Bjerka maintained a 3.94 overall GPA and graduated with her degree in environment & society this May.

2013-14 Seawolf Corporate Partnership Community Outreach

A

R

DOPT A UNIVERSITY…The department sponsors an “Adopt a University” program with Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley public high schools as well as some Anchorage-area private schools for the Carrs/ Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The program allows extensive interaction between visiting Shootout teams and local high school students. Students can learn more about their adopted university while offering support through cheerleaders, band, trainers and sports information. The local schools may also get involved with providing supplemental practice sites, as well as the Thanksgiving Dinner program.

EADING WITH THE SEAWOLVES...For years UAA studentathletes have been active in the community, especially through reading programs at Anchorage-area elementary schools. That activity has been formalized in a program called Reading With The Seawolves, whereby a cross-section of student-athletes visit different elementary schools each year to share their favorite children’s books.

S

CHOOL CLINICS…The department’s coaches are frequent speakers at clinics throughout the state, sharing their expertise with elementary and secondary school coaches seeking to enhance their skills.

S

UPPORT FOR NON-PROFITS… Each year UAA Athletics adopts a nonprofit program – generally focusing on health and/or youth issues – to support on a department-wide basis. Our current non-profit partner is the Children’s Hospital at Providence Hospital. In the past, UAA Athletics has supported programs such as Nothing But Nets, Shots for Tots, Alaska Special Olympics, Alaska SafeKids, The V Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Anchorage Center for Families, the Anchorage Immunization Partners Coalition, Children’s Miracle Network, Life Alaska and the Alaska Literacy Program.

W

OMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, HOOPS CLINICS…The women’s volleyball and basketball teams have been active with such activities as post-game clinics and Junior High and Girl Scout Nights at home contests.

T

ICKET DONATIONS…The department provides tickets and door prizes to elementary schools for programs that promote academic achievement.

S

PORTS CAMPS...Each summer UAA coaches host a variety of youth skills camps that are both fun and challenging. Among others, these include the popular Kendall Jump Shot basketball camp under the direction of men’s basketball head coach Rusty Osborne and the Seawolf Volleyball Camps under the direction of Chris Green.

A

THLETIC SPEAKERS BUREAU… The department’s coaches and administrators are frequent speakers at youth team banquets and civic organization luncheons, promoting Seawolf athletics in addition to educating the public about key issues in college athletics.
