n its previous 23 editions, the Kendall Hockey Classic has hosted some of the top programs in college hockey and provided Anchorage fans with some unforgettable moments. The 2014 Classic should be no exception. As always, host Alaska Anchorage and fellow Western Collegiate Hockey Association member Alaska Fairbanks will challenge a pair of Lower 48 squads, with this year’s duo of Maine and Wisconsin bringing a bevy of tradition. Together, the Badgers and Black Bears have combined for eight national titles and 23 Frozen Four appearances. Not to be overlooked, UAA hopes to continue its run of good play in its annual season-opening event, aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Kendall championship. Last year the Seawolves scored with 4 seconds remaining in the finale against Air Force to claim their third straight gold pan – awarded to the team with the best win-loss record in the fixed-format tourney.

MAINE VS. ALASKA FAIRBANKS, 4:07 PM WISCONSIN VS. ALASKA ANCHORAGE, 7:07 PM

MAINE The Black Bears are making their program’s third trip to Anchorage, trying to recapture the magic of the 1987-88 team that won the Kendall Classic and went on to the Maine’s first-ever Frozen Four appearance the following spring. The five-time Hockey East champions and two-time NCAA champs are coming off a 16-154 record under then-rookie head coach Red Gendron in 2013-14. This year’s squad returns 16 letterwinners from that team, including the top four goal and point producers. Leading the way for Maine will be Dallas Stars draftee Devin Shore, who accounted for 14 goals and a team-high 29 assists last season. Fellow junior forwards Ryan Lomberg and Steven Swavely tallied 11 and 10 goals, respectively, while senior forward Connor Leen’s 23 points were third-most on the club. Along the blue line, Vancouver Canucks draftee Ben Hutton led the Black Bears with a team-best 15 goals as sophomore, while rookie Dan Renouf produced 11 points and committed only six penalties in 34 games. In goal, Gendron must replace NHL draftee Martin Ouellette, who started 34 of 35 games a year ago.

Here is a brief look at the 2014 Classic field: ALASKA ANCHORAGE Aiming for their ninth overall Kendall title, the Seawolves are coming off a historic campaign in 2013-14, with their 18-16-4 record accounting for the program’s first winning season in 20 years. Under new head coach Matt Thomas, UAA also qualified for the WCHA Final Five, establishing itself as a contender in the revamped WCHA. With the loss of leading scorers Matt Bailey and 2013 Kendall Classic Most Outstanding Player Jordan Kwas to graduation, the Seawolves will turn to the veteran trio of junior center Blake Tatchell (7-25—32), senior wing Scott Allen (17-14—31) and senior center Brett Cameron (10-13—23) to increase their scoring production. On the blue line, senior Austin Coldwell contributed 6-13—19 totals a year ago, while fellow senior and assistant captain Derek Docken was one of just six Seawolves to skate in all 38 games. They will pace an experienced crew that also includes juniors Blake Leask, Ben Matthews, Austin Sevalrud and Chris Williams. Between the pipes, Thomas will rely on sophomore Michael Matyas and a pair of talented freshmen – Jared D’Amico and Olivier Mantha – to fill the void left by the now-graduated tandem of Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal. ALASKA FAIRBANKS Nanooks head coach Dallas Ferguson has the task of replacing WCHA Player-of-the-Year Cody Kunyk and linemate Colton Beck, who combined to furnish 82 points last year as UAF posted an 18-15-4 record and placed third in the regular-season standings. Junior center Tyler Morley returns after putting up 17 goals – second-most on the team – and 17 assists, while winger Marcus Basara is coming off a breakout freshman season in which he recorded 12-14—26 totals. UAF also returns two high-scoring defend-

ers in junior Colton Parayko and junior Trevor Campbell. Parayko, the reigning WCHA Defenseman-of-the-Year and St. Louis Blues draftee, accounted for 26 points, including five power-play goals, while visiting the penalty box just eight times all year. In net, the Nanooks return three players – John Keeney, Sean Cahill and Davis Jones – who saw action in at least seven games. Among the trio, Cahill earned the team’s top numbers with a .906 saves percentage, an impressive 2.28 goalsagainst average and a 9-4-1 record. UAF is aiming for its first Kendall title since winning back-to-back in 2008 and ’09.

Alaska Anchorage’s Brett Cameron helped the Seawolves to their third straight Kendall Hockey Classic title in 2013.

Alaska’s Colton Parayko, a member of the 2013 Kendall Hockey Classic All-Tournament Team.

WISCONSIN A former league rival of UAA’s, Wisconsin will make its first trip to Anchorage – and first-ever to the Kendall Classic – since becoming a member of the newly formed Big Ten Conference. The six-time NCAA champions are coming off another stellar campaign in which they went 24-11-2, won the inaugural Big Ten Tournament, and made the NCAA Tournament for the 26th time in program history. Head coach Mike Eaves will depend on a new top forward line with the departure of the Badgers’ top four scorers from a year ago. Senior assistant captain Joseph LaBate tallied 11 goals and 11 helpers in 2013-14, while sophomore Grant Besse found the net eight times. UW’s No. 2 point producer on the blue line with 16 points last season, junior Kevin Schulze will be joined by 5th-year senior captain and Wisconsin native Chase Drake to anchor the defense. In the crease, the Badgers boast perhaps the nation’s best goaltender with senior Joel Rumpel, who earned a 20-6-1 record, 2.07 GAA and .929 saves percentage last year when he was a Hobey Baker top-10 finalist.

KENDALL HOCKEY CLASSIC - OCT.10-11, 2014 - ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

S

tarted as an eight-team tournament in January 1984, the Kendall Hockey Classic has grown into one of the premier preseason college hockey tournaments in the nation. Initially known as the First Interstate Classic, the tourney’s format would switch to the current four-team field in 1986. The Classic was discontinued in 1993 when the Seawolves joined the WCHA, but was reborn in 1999 when the WCHA reduced its league schedule to 28 games. From 1986-92 and 1999-2000, the tournament was known as the Nissan/Jeep or Johnson Nissan Classic. The tourney was named the Nye Frontier Classic from 2001-07. Kendall began its title sponsorship in 2008. Host Alaska Anchorage has won the Classic eight times, claiming the first ever ‘three-peat’ from 2011-13, after posting three titles in four years from 2003-06. The Seawolves also posted tournament championships in 1990 and 1988. Seawolf players have hoisted the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player trophy on nine occasions (Jordan Kwas, 2013; Matt Bailey, 2012; Mickey Spencer, 2011; Josh Lunden, 2007; Shea Hamilton, 2004; Dallas Steward, 2003; Mike Scott, 2001 and Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Paul Krake,1988 and 1990). UAA has an overall record of 24-14-10 in 23 Classic tournaments and has played for the championship 12 times.

UAA’s Paul Krake is the only player in the history of the Kendall Hockey Classic to earn multiple Most Outstanding Player Awards, claiming the honors in 1988 and 1990. The Seawolves won the Classic title in both of those seasons.

UAA’s Mike Scott (1999-02) earned Most Outstanding Player honors in 2001, marking the first time in tournament history the MOP was awarded to a player on a nonchampionship team.

North Dakota goalie Jon Casey earned the very first Classic Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Fighting Sioux to the inaugural tournament title over UAA in 1984. Casey would go on to have a successful NHL career, including helping lead the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals.

Former Colorado College standout Peter Sejna was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Classic after leading the Tigers to the tournament title. Sejna went on to claim the Hobey Baker Memorial Award that same season.

THE CLASSIC AND THE FROZEN FOUR

In 23 previous tournaments, eight teams that have played in the Classic have advanced to the Frozen Four that same season. The 2000-01 Classic field featured two teams that went on to the Frozen Four (Michigan and Michigan State). On two occasions the defending NCAA Champion participated in the Classic (Northern Michigan, 1991-92; Boston College, 2001-02). YEAR TEAM CLASSIC FINISH NCAA FINISH 2010-11 North Dakota First Semifinals 2004-05 Minnesota Runner-up Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan First Semifinals 2000-01 Michigan State Runner-up Semifinals 1988-89 Minnesota Fourth Runner-up 1987-88 Maine First Semifinals 1986-87 Minnesota First Semifinals 1983-84 North Dakota First Semifinals Nineteen Classic teams all-time have qualified for the ensuing NCAA Tournament. On four occasions (1987-88, 1991-92, 2000-01 and 200203), half of the four-team field participated in the national tournament. Fourteen of 17 Classic tournaments have featured at least one NCAA qualifier.

DETERMINING A CHAMPION

All tied games will have a shootout immediately following the end of the overtime period. The games will be officially recorded as a tie. The shootout result will only count toward breaking potential ties to determine the Classic champion. Regular shootout rules apply, with each team getting five shots from five different players on the goaltender. If still tied, then a sudden-death shootout with take place. FORMULA FOR DETERMINING NYE FRONTIER CLASSIC CHAMPION

1. Win-Loss-Tie record If still tied, the following tie-breakers, in order, will be used: A. Win-Loss record inclusive of shootout results B. Head-to-head results C. Goal differential (GS-GA=GD) D. Fewest goals allowed E. Shootout differential (GS-GA=GD) If still tied, co-champions will be declared.

Alaska Anchorage’s Josh Lunden was selected to the All-Tournament team in 2008 and 2009 after claiming the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player award in 2007.
