The Weekly Gazette – Issue 2
Last week’s Gazette featured an article on our new School Development Plan (SDP). I stated that the ‘… prime aim of any SDP is to raise standards.’ I went on to say that ‘We must commit ourselves to the notion that we are all learners. Staff must be open to new learning and, hence, change.’
Let me reiterate the following points: 1) Staff and students must embrace the Learner Profile wholeheartedly 2) Staff and students must place more emphasis on learning to learn as opposed to the content driven nature of learning 3) Raising standards is our prime objective. At the heart of any SDP are the plans each Department formulates.

Subject and faculty departments (Middle, Senior and IB Sixth Form)
KG 1 and 2
Years 1 and 2
Year 3, 4 and 5
Each department will articulate:
Aims and Objectives (Where do we want to go?)
Our Current Successes (Where are we now?)
Challenges (What are the obstacles and difficulties?)
Action Plans which include person responsible and timeframes (How do we get there?)
Details of Tracking and Monitoring of Student Progress (How are our action plans affecting student achievement?)
Ongoing Self-Evaluation (How are we doing?)
Professional Development Plan (What ongoing professional development is required to achieve our goals?)
I am happy to report that all Departments have completed their first drafts and are discussing them with me. The process continues and I will keep you well informed.

Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights ‘In a world in which people are becoming more interdependent, it is no longer possible to plan our present and future without viewing decisions and choices from a global perspective.
An education with a global perspective would allow students to realize that much of what is taking place in our country is conditioned by external events.
One ought also to promote the view that the sustainability of life on earth is contingent on our everyday choices.’

Professor Richard England Richard England is a Visiting Professor at the University of Malta, a Professor (Honoris Causa) at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Bath, in England. He is an Academician at the International Academy of Architecture and a Professor (Honoris Causa) at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of New York, U.S.A. In 1993 the Government of Malta appointed him Officer of The Order of Merit and in 1999 he was appointed a Hon Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
His buildings and designs have earned him numerous International Awards, including:
Two Commonwealth Association of Architects Regional Awards
Six International Academy of Architecture Prizes
The ‘Comite Des Critiques d’Architecture’ (C,I,C.A.)
Silver Medal in 1987
IFRAA – AIA Award in 1991.
He was also the recipient of:
The International prize at the III Architectural Bienal of Costa Rica
The Gold Medal of the Belgrade Architectural Triennal in 2000.
He has worked in the capacity of Architectural Consultant to governmental and private institutions in many countries including his native Malta.
THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Importantly, our guest Old Edwardian will be addressing our IB students on 20 October.
Professor Richard England was born in Malta and graduated in Architecture at the University of Malta.
He continued his studies in Italy and also worked as a student architect in the studio of the Italian architect –designer Gio. Ponti. He is also a sculptor, photographer poet, artist and the author and subject of several books.

Gazette News
Dear Parents, students and Community Members The second edition of the new revamped Edwardian Gazette is out. I hope that you are enjoying the new format, features, information and articles as much as I am enjoying putting it all together. We received a good number of emails complimenting our new Gazette which were very much appreciated. Your feedback and contribution will help make this online publication a fully functional communication tool.
This week I have placed a Sudoku Puzzle. Next week, will feature a Word Search and the following week Code Breaker. All puzzles can be printed and then sent to the College by post. Alternatively, the finished puzzles can be emailed to me.
The puzzles have a monthly rotation and the closing date for each is a month from their release. Various gift vouchers are to be won while winners and puzzles’ solutions will be published in the Gazette periodically.
As promised the Headmaster’s Message, IB Page, the SEC Past & Present and the Personality Page, etc are present once again in this second issue.
In the next issue, you will be invited to join in our very own Edwardian Photographic Club and an array of competitions will follow suit. Details will be announced in the following issues. Fabulous prizes can be won.

The Ethos of St Edward’s College By Martin Scicluna
‘…In establishing the School, Lady Strickland had two aims. It was first and foremost to be a Catholic School founded on and following Catholic principles. Secondly, it was to be organised on the lines of an English Public School, with its emphasis on character building and an all round education. Were she alive today, we believe that Lady Strickland would agree that those aspirations had been amply fulfilled.
In seventy-five years, the fundamental ethos of the School has remained the same regardless of whether or not its boys were talented star performers in life’s lottery. St Edward’s College has prepared all its students to be responsible members of Maltese society, invariably in leadership roles with a well honed sense of civic responsibility and devotion to duty. Its traditions and its ethos have not changed with the calendar. Tried and tested they have endured.
Over a span of three quarters of a century, around three thousand Edwardians have passed out from St Edward’s College. The Edwardian stands out by virtue of his self-confidence, bearing, manners, courtesy, loyalty and commitment. This has been the genuine Edwardian legacy.’

This summer the College organised a Trip to Lago Di Garda. For the lucky boys who got to partake in this experience, it was a blast from beginning to end. Boys enjoyed Gardaland and all the rides and activities it offers, under the watchful eye of Mr Sammut. Other activities were a day at Parco Natura Viva, Movieland, biking, lake swimming amongst many others. The accommodation was a self-catering country apartment with a barbeque area and a communal pool with the view of the lake and surrounded by turf grounds. A visit to Venice was the icing on the cake and all the boys were smitten by its majestic beauty.
