THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members 15 October 2010
As you are aware the annual SEPTA Fair takes place on Sunday. This event provides us with 2 opportunities: 1) to ‘fun raise’ and 2) to fund raise. Both hold equal importance.
I strongly encourage all family members and friends to attend this wonderful event. Mr Chris Naudi and his team have certainly put together a fun-filled programme of events which cater for everyone.
Funds from the Fair go directly towards projects which benefit our students. It is interesting to note that SEPTA paid for the first pitch in its entirety. This was a tremendous effort.
Speaking of funds, I kindly ask you to sell and return the raffle books for Sunday’s major draw. I very much look forward to seeing you on the day.
Best wishes Michael Chittenden Headmaster

Should you have any clothes which your children (boys up to the age of 18) have outgrown but are still in a good condition, kindly pass them onto her. The orphanage will accept all sizes and types of clothes which will be put to very good use. Sports/football wear will also be greatly appreciated.
Your sons may pass the clothes onto Ms Muscat at College. She will also be available to collect any items at the St. Edward's Fair this Sunday.

Edward the cheeky-looking little boy puppet The Kindergarten team has been busy during the summer break devising some new initiatives intended to improve the curriculum we offer the children.
The first one was the purchase of a large puppet (which we have named Edward!) for use by KG1 teachers. Edward is a cheeky-looking little boy puppet who has joined the St Edward's KG team to introduce a letter of the alphabet each week. All three KG1 classes introduced him to the children last week and he was an instant hit! The photo shows Edward having fun in Ms Liza's KG1 class.

Sumak Kawsay Yachay Foundation I would like to send you all a heartfelt thank you for the amazing contributions to the fundraising for the volunteer project I was working on this summer. I was working with the Sumak Kawsay Yachay Foundation which is currently focusing on the Katitawa School, a bilingual Kitchwa and Spanish speaking school for children aged between 2 and 12. The School is located just above a town called Salasaca in the Tungurahua province in central Ecuador. The area is so poor that children are expected to work for their families and part of the project is to inform the community about the needs for a proper education. Besides educating children, the Foundation is also providing English lessons to adults that have little or no education at all.
The funds were used to purchase much needed musical instruments and art materials for the children as well as materials needed for their everyday education. With your help, these children now have a much more complete education to draw upon and I wish I could share with you, each smile of gratitude I received from them.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE ‘Future driven and sports centered Pippo Psaila for a truly knowledge based healthy society!’ Interview with Mr Psaila
When I asked for his plans for the future, Mr Psaila replied: Various Projects including: White Rocks Complex This redevelopment project included mixed residential units, catering and entertainment facilities, an indoor and outdoor sports complex and a beach facility. The complex would offer the very best facilities and could be the start of a new niche in sports tourism. Largest Complex in Southern Europe Marsa Sports Club Complex Upgrading of Marsa Sports Club Complex into a multifunctional complex including sports like Rugby, Equestrianism, and many others. The answer to the question regarding his memories as a student of St Edward’s College was the following: Having been a term boarder, he had the time scheduled to do a variety of extra-curricular activities, sport being the major emphasis. This instilled in him a sense of passion and understanding of sports, which varied from Football to Basketball, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Table-Tennis etc, etc. By M Fenech

IB Economics New Economics Facebook Group economics IB and for all interested
Economics is a social science that attempts to use our scarce resources in the most efficient manner possible. It is based on rational decisions as opposed to normative ones. We are all economists, since our resources are limited and we too try to do our best in deciding how to use them based on what we consider to be the most rational decisions. During our economics lessons, students not only learn the fundamental concepts of economic theory, but also how such theory applies in the real world. Being a social science makes economics a subject that is also concerned with improving human welfare and development. Efficient use of scarce resources is not only about maximizing the revenue generated but also about taking into consideration the rights and obligations that we have to future generations and to those who very often are considered as expendable in the pursuit of efficiency and profit maximization. In other words, the human face of economics.... As a result of the above, the Business Department at St. Edward's has set up a Facebook group aimed at informing all interested parties. This site which includes video clips, documentaries and interviews attempts to put what our students learn into a global context. It also tries to show and forward the voices of those who are at times marginalised in the pursuit of efficiency. This, at times, controversial aspect of this group is aimed at promoting and stimulating thought, discussion and comment. The IB profile should be the profile for all students. Open-mindedness, good communication skills, knowledge, sound principles, care for others and, above all, the courage to take a stand, are the characteristics that have always differentiated our students from others. This group aims to give them and all those who wish to join an insight into the world of economics with all its pros and cons. I hope you will find it both informative and at the same time entertaining. The name of the group is ‘ economics IB and for all interested.’ You are all invited. It can be found under the category of Student groups, Academic groups Mr. J. Agius
Please refer to the College regulations regarding the use of Face book. These can be found on the front page of the College website. Parents should supervise their children’s use of online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and hi5 etc.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE St Edward’s Our Patron Saint Biography of St Edward the Confessor
Edward ruled England from 1042 until his death in 1066
He lived a life renowned for generosity and piety and was considered a gentle and devoted ruler
He was canonized in 1161 and became known as Edward the Confessor
A confessor is a saint who did not die a martyr’s death but whose life proclaimed their faith
St. Edward’s feast day is October 13th
Edward was born in Islip, Oxfordshire about 1003 and died January 5th, 1066
He was the son of the Saxon King Ethelred II “the Unready”
Edward had vowed to make a pilgrimage to St. Peter’s tomb in Rome if he regained his kingdom.
However, leaving England for that length of time would have destabilised the country, the Pope therefore requested that Edward build a new abbey to St. Peter.
Edward rebuilt and enlarged the Saxon abbey in Westminster.
“Westminster Abbey” was dedicated just a week before Edward’s death.
Edward’s reputation for healing the sick continued after his death and in 1161 he was canonized.
In 1163 a shrine to Edward the Confessor was created in Westminster Abbey; it became the centre of pilgrimage for several centuries.
St. Edward was the Patron Saint of England until 1415

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE St Edward’s Day Despite the bad weather, our yearly appointment to celebrate St Edward’s day by competing with the old boys, took place once again.
The day commenced with Mass for all sections of the College followed by a variety of sports activities. The main attraction was the Football match. The latter was of high level, a pleasant spectacle indeed. Amongst the old boys were: Andrew Hogg (Valletta and National Team), Gianluca Calabretta (Tarxien Rainbows), Jonathan and Patrick Briscoe White (Luxol), Kurt Coleiro (Luxol) and Andrew Scerri (Gzira Utd).
After a brilliant start, our boys were leading 2-0. A couple of minutes later the old boys stepped up their game and before half-time they were leading 4-2. From then onwards, the old boys managed to control the game. Final Score 12-8
Other activities included Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball and Rugby. The day’s highlight was the excellent sportsmanship throughout all the sports activities. The activities were followed by the presentation of the ‘La Ferla’ Shield.
The Headmaster presented the shield to Mr Attard Montalto, after which the old boys joined the staff for some refreshments in the staff room.

The boys' prayers were certainly answered on Wednesday as the inclement weather threatened to cancel our special day. During Mass, it began to rain and it looked as though all was lost. This, fortunately, was not the case as the clouds gave way to excellent weather. The students responded and leapt into an array of sports with incredible enthusiasm. The day was special as the behaviour and sportsmanship were second to none. In closing, I would like to congratulate the OE's who once again were awarded the Shield. HM
THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Gazette News Dear Parents and Community Members Here we are with the Third Issue of ‘The Edwardian Gazette. As you can see, this Issue is packed to the brim full of images demonstrating life at the College…..buzzing with activities and happy faces. Judging from the number of emails the Headmaster and I have received, I must say our new Gazette is a huge success: over a hundred members (and growing), on our new Facebook Group ‘The Edwardian Gazette’. The latter was created this week placing us in the global social network that enables us to showcase our College and eventually create revenue through new students. The amount of traffic being generated by parents, students and Old Edwardians is massive and, when compared to previous years, is an unbelievable step forward. We are slowly achieving what we set out to do...that is putting the College in a position it deserves and showcasing our assets which are primarily our student and teaching body. A word on the new competitions: from next week we are introducing 4 different types. The categories are as follows:
Art – Photography – Essay – Poetry
All four competitions will have different categories, mainly:
Middle - Senior – Junior
In this way everyone can have a fair chance; details, application and more information in next week’s Gazette. Thank you for all the feedback from parent, students and Old Edwardians. This is much appreciated and will make the Gazette enjoyable to all. This is your Gazette. The more we know about your likes and dislikes, the better the outcome. THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Visit to LOGOS HOPE Yr 6
It was a sunny, hot, day. The year 6 classes were going to go on an outing to the Logos Hope, a ship which has more than 7,500 titles (not books!) After we had completed the register we had a Religion lesson. To everyone, time was passing so slowly! At last, the bell which we had all been waiting for rang. It was greeted by a huge cheer. We lined up and with a big grin on our countenances, we walked out of the class. We found an old, rickety bus waiting for us. We eagerly climbed on. I got a place on the front seat with my best friends. We talked mainly about football and also whether we were going to buy books. Without us noticing, time flew and we soon arrived at the Grand Harbour. Amongst other ships, the Logos Hope loomed over us, casting a huge shadow. We had seen the pictures, but now we got a very good idea of how big it actually was. I could hear lots of people muttering one word, “Wow”. We went up the steps leading to the gigantic vessel. We entered the ship. A friendly crew member greeted us and showed us to a huge hall. A large number of children from different schools awaited us. Our class was lucky as we managed to get a place in the front row. The Hall had a projector and lots of spotlights hanging from the ceiling shining down onto the stage. After a few minutes a middle-aged woman greeted us. She told us we were going to have lots of fun. After that, we watched a play about a captain and his two sailors who were searching for the greatest treasure, The Bible. We then had a puppet show about Jonah. We got to know the crew’s various nationalities and then it was time to go upstairs to the bookshop. The bookshop was your everyday bookshop except it was five times as big. It was a bookworm’s heaven! I managed to buy a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”. After an hour in the big bookshop it was, unfortunately, time to leave. We thanked the friendly crew and got out of the enormous ship. We found the same bus waiting for us and we climbed on. We all talked about what a great outing it was, as it served us a lesson and a fun experience put together. As before, time flew and we soon found ourselves in Birgu. We had enjoyed this outing thoroughly. As the Ancient Greek Aeschylus stated, “It’s always in season for old men to learn,”... let alone children!

A WORDSEARCH IS A CLASSIC PUZZLE GAME WHEREBY YOU HAVE A GRID OF LETTERS, AND IN THERE SOMEWHERE ARE CERTAIN WORDS THAT YOU NEED TO FIND. THESE ARE LISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PUZZLE. THE AIM IS TO FIND ALL THE WORDS, AND OFTEN IT IS FUN TO TRY TO DO SO AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. WORDS ARE USUALLY PLACED HORIZONTALLY, VERTICALLY AND DIAGONALLY, AND THEN BACKWARDS IN ANY OF THOSE DIRECTIONS. THE BEST WAY IS TO SCAN THE GRID ROW BY ROW, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THIS WILL HELP YOU PICK UP ALL THE WORDS THAT ARE WRITTEN AS WORDS ON A PAGE. THEN DO THE SAME FOR VERTICAL LINES FROM THE LEFT AND MOVE LEFT TO RIGHT SCANNING TOP TO BOTTOM. THIS WILL LEAVE YOU WORDS PLACED BACKWARDS AND DIAGONALLY WHICH CAN SOMETIMES BE THE HARDER ONES TO SPOT.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE From our IB Students Join the ONE baby protest
ONE is an international, non-profit, nonpartisan organisation established in 2004, which aims to increase global government funding in order to develop international aid programmes with the hope of bringing an end to extreme global poverty. The issues ONE targets include treating HIV/AIDS victims in developing countries, improving water and sanitary conditions, establishing schools and institutions to educate people, assisting in development, promoting trade and investment in developing countries.
One of the most recent campaigns launched by ONE is the “ONE baby protest - no child born with HIV by 2015. The aim of the campaign is to encourage world leaders to donate money to the Global Fund in order to buy treatment which can then be administered to mothers in order to stop the transmission of HIV to their babies during birth. Over 400,000 babies each year are born with HIV, despite the fact that this is completely preventable through simple treatment. ONE is asking for support from all over the world, not through donations, but through your voice.
By simply visiting www.one.org and entering your Name, Email Address and Country, you will be contributing towards achieving a world with no baby being born with HIV. ONE needs your help so that it can place pressure on world leaders to support efforts to make this goal a reality. All it takes is two minutes of your time, yet this is enough to change lives.
