THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE SEC-Articles OCCUPATIONAL & SAFETY-(2) Bernardino Ramazzini {1633-1714}
Rightly honoured as the “Father of Occupational Medicine”, Ramazzini cared about workers’ health - often adversely affected by their trades. For instance, observing the speed at which a sewage worker carried out the task of emptying the household sewer, Ramazzini quizzed the employee as to the reason behind this seemingly excessive haste. He replied that too much lingering caused blindness. Investigating further, Ramazzini found that most sewage workers developed severe reddening of the eyes and often ended up blind. The cause was later attributed to ammonia vapour. Ramazzini visited various workplaces to discuss health and safety matters with the employees themselves. He established many a link between particular workplace hazards and the resultant illnesses. Yet Ramazzini did not stop there but suggested effective preventative measures. In 1700, when medical theory was still a matter of consulting ancient medical and theological texts, he wrote De Morbis Artificum Diatriba - the first comprehensive study of diseases caused by various occupations.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE From the Kindergarten LEARNING HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT PLAN Last week the Kindergarten children had great fun finding out about the different ways we can take care of the environment. They learnt what would happen if everybody dropped their litter on the ground and what would happen if we do not take care of plants and trees.
They learnt the different colours of the recycle bins and made their own in the classroom. The children were invited to bring some items from home for recycling and they joined in with great enthusiasm! They listened to lots of stories about looking after the environment as well as learning some songs and rhymes.
The mini-topic concluded with each child being presented with a certificate to mark their efforts and a gift of an eco-bag and pen/pencil. It is hoped that the Kindergarten children will keep up their recycling and conservation efforts and will 'educate' their families!

We made bookmarks, wrote monster poems, wrote a monster story on the computer drew our monsters and described them to the rest of the class and collaged our monster castle. We also learnt a poem called 'Pumpkin Time' and we knew it so well that we said it at assembly. Ms Tabone and Ms Spiteri were very proud of us. We were so happy and had so much fun. OUTING TO VALLETTA WATERFRONT (YR 5) On Thursday 4 November, Year 5X and 5Y went on an outing to the Valletta Waterfront. My friends and I were very excited to see the Malta Experience for the very first time. It was a short preview of Maltese history. Next, we were taken to Agenda Bookshop to meet Trevor Zahra, a Maltese author. As he spoke to us and read a few of his poems, TVM were filming. We all took our book ‘Postijiet Sbieh’, written by Mr Zahra himself, for him to sign, which he did. Next, we were taken to a restaurant called ‘Pepe Nero’ to make our own pizza. A professional pizzaiolo showed us how it’s done and then helped us to prepare our very own pizza which was then cooked in a stone oven. We were served drinks and then ate the pizza we had prepared. We were given booklets and a pizza voucher. We all enjoyed the day and the biggest surprise of all was seeing us that evening on television on the news! By Julian B – Year 5Y
THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE SEC-Articles DINJA WAHDA - ACTIVITIES Dinja Wahda is Birdlife’s environmental education project organised in conjunction with the Education Directorate to teach young people about the Earth and its creatures with special reference to the Maltese Islands. Throughout the year, pupils in the Junior School will take part in several green activities. Each activity is recorded by the Dinja Wahda School Coordinator and points are awarded. At the beginning of the following scholastic year, trophies are awarded according to the points gained. St. Edward’s College has already been awarded two gold trophies and hopefully, with the pupils’ help, next year the College will be awarded gold! The first activity is a nature photography competition for the Junior School. The month of November is ideal for country walks; therefore, when you are out in the countryside, take your camera along and encourage your children to take photos of plants and animals in their natural habitat. Please be aware of the following rules: The idea is to record the beauty of native wildlife in its natural habitat without disturbing it. Therefore: No pictures of pets or exotic, captive, dead or stuffed animals No pictures of cut flowers, ornamental garden flowers or pot plants No disturbing of animals or their homes (nests). The animals welfare is always more important than our photographs. The photos can be sent in printed form or by e-mail to catcoleiro@gmail.com Closing date is Tuesday 30 November 2010. The best photos will be judged and prizes awarded. Catherine Coleiro Dinja Wahda Co-Ordinator
