THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members

I would like to thank all parents who attended our Parent Consultations held this week. It is important that this 3 way communication take place: teacher – parent – student. As you know messages between home and School often become confused making these meetings even more important. A theme which rose in a number of consultations was that of parents’ involvement with homework. Simply put, we, as teachers, often see a huge discrepancy between what is achieved at home and what can, in fact, be achieved by the student without assistance. One of the most negative things we can do as parents is to overly assist with homework. At times, teachers are assessing the work of parents which is unhelpful. Our aim is to develop independent thinkers and workers. If parents overly assist, their child will become dependent. Furthermore, teachers will think that the student understands the work and will not be aware that extra assistance is required. Tutors, at times, are the worst offenders. I have often stated that some students who have tutors become unfocused in class. Why? Because they know that they can get help elsewhere. How then can parents assist? Provide an environment free from noise and distraction. Remove access to internet and social sites such as Facebook. Set homework routines (eg homework is to be completed before a certain time). In the case of younger children, check the quality of homework. Be available in case clarification is required. Communicate difficulties to teachers when they arise. Encourage reading every night. If homework is not done satisfactorily apply prearranged consequences (eg take away playstation). Recognise good homework when completed by providing positive feedback.

I hope that you have found these hints useful. Best wishes Michael Chittenden

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Kindergarten Outing to Ghammieri Farm – KG 2 Last week, as a conclusion to their recent topic on farm animals, the KG2 children went on a visit to Ghammieri farm. When they arrived, they were given a tour to see all the different animals, which included cows, pigs, ponies, goats and even emus. They were shown the machines which are used to milk the cows each day and were then given a yoghurt to enjoy. After seeing more animals, the children ate their lunch in the picnic area before heading back to Kindergarten. Julie Mangion Head of Kindergarten

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Articles OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY – (3)

Four Key Terms in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

Not too many people are able to define these four terms adequately: HEALTH – the protection of the bodies and minds of people from illness resulting from the materials, processes or procedures used in the workplace. SAFETY – protection from physical injury (So you can be healthy in an unsafe place or safe but in an unhealthy state. Ideally of course, you should be both healthy and safe!)

 HAZARD – the potential or ability of a hazardous object or activity to cause harm  RISK – the likelihood or probability of the hazardous object or activity causing harm

A motor car in motion is an extremely hazardous object. On Maltese roads and in the hands of psychotic drivers, the risk of injury would be anything from medium to high. Yet, when locked up in a garage, the risk of the car causing harm is practically zero.
