Yorkshire really is an exceptional location for golf. Societies and individual golfers often have such a great time that many return year after year to experience new courses in this beautiful setting. In Airedale and Wharfedale there are a variety of good and different types of course quite close to the hotels; most of the courses have excellent views, some superb holes and are not too hilly. Whilst in north Leeds – there are a total of nine courses located close together, including the likes of Alwoodley and Moortown. Both are 'Mackenzie' courses and have been Open Championship qualifying courses and, along with Pannal in Harrogate have been selected to host top British and English amateur events. White Rose Golf Breaks take the hassle out of booking a golf trip. One email or phone call to the owner, Peter Graham and potential visitors will have the benefit of his great knowledge of the hotels and courses in the region. After consultation and once interest in bringing a group has been confirmed, Peter will then book the accommodation and the tee times and send the organiser maps and directions to use during their golf break.

have experienced a great deal of rebooking and recommendations via customers that have not only had their expectations met but exceeded. The most popular venues proved to be courses and accommodation providers in North Bradford, Harrogate, York and the East Coast. To support the range of golfing holiday packages that White Rose Golf Breaks offer in the Airedale and Wharfedale regions of Yorkshire, the company have teamed up with the Mercure Hotel Bradford North to provide visiting groups with an ideal base from where to explore the region. The hotel is situated in its own private grounds leading down the River Aire. It has 103 en-suite bedrooms and all the facilities of a modern hotel, which has earned it a 4 Crown 'Commended' rating. Three of our nominated golf courses are within a 10-minute drive. Numerous famous golf course architects have been raised or were based in the county of Yorkshire. To celebrate one such architect, the MacKenzie Collection in honour of the world renowned, Dr Alistair MacKenzie, includes two nights dinner, bed & breakfast at Weetwood Hall Hotel in North Leeds with a round each at Ganton, Alwoodley and Moortown for just £355.00 per person sharing a twin or double room.

White Rose Golf Breaks (WRGB) has been under the careful management of Peter Graham for over thirteen years. Peter has played golf in Yorkshire for many years and has regularly taken golf holidays in other parts of the UK and abroad; leaving him in good stead to pass on his expert knowledge of the area to other golfers and society groups from around the country. WRGB’s golfing breaks in Yorkshire range from the cliff tops of East Riding through to the flat lands of the Vale of York to the moors, hills and river valleys of West Riding.

All three of the courses remain in the top 50 courses in the British Isles. Why not play all three in 2014?

Incorporating nearly fifty courses in his portfolio, including famous names like Ganton, Moortown, Lindrick (all Ryder Cup venues), Alwoodley and Fulford; Peter offers extraordinary deals that are not found on commercial websites. Similarly the hotels range from some of the best in the county to pubs with rooms.

White Rose Golf Breaks also offer a ‘passport’ scheme in Bridlington, where individuals can play any three of Bridlington, Bridlington Links, Flamborough Head, Hornsea or Filey for only £58, any four for £70 or all five for just £80; exceptional value including weekends.

In 2012 and in 2013, over 1000 golfers came on golfing holidays to Yorkshire and, as a direct result Peter and White Rose Golf Breaks

For 2014, the fantastic Ryder Cup package continues. GOLF CLUB

It has been over 100 years since Cleckheaton and District Golf Club was formed and it is still thriving over a century on. The Alistair Mckenzie designed course measures in at just under 6,000 yards, 5,985 in total. The parkland course offers a real challenge for players of all abilities. Cleckheaton hasn’t always been in its current location though; it was moved there in 1922. Cleckheaton and District Golf Club is a private members club with an active membership, friendly club atmosphere and very strong juniors section. Visitors are most welcome though. There is emphasis on the older golfers that attend; this comes in the form of EGGS, the Elderly Gentleman’s Golfers Society. Membership is available across all ages and can be paid over 12 months by standing order: there is a small discount

for paying in full. Members benefits include being able to introduce up to 3 guests at a reduced green fee along with being able to receive a gold card which gives them a minimum of 10% reduction of their bar bill. Cleckheaton has plenty of facilities that will attract both experienced and novice golfers; one of these facilities is the pro-shop. This shop can offer you video analysis of your swing, posture and other aspects of your golfing techniques. Lessons are also available, again across the whole age spectrum. Societies and corporate companies are given a warm welcome to this golf club and will be given the options of various packages or they can tailor a package to suit their individual needs and budget. An interesting feature of Cleckheaton is the well established and thriving

Rabbits Section. This caters for players with a handicap from 16-28. The Rabbits Section enjoy both competitive and friendly golf throughout the season. Competitive golf includes both the Bradford & District and the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association competitions. There is the annual battle against neighbours, East Bierley, for the coveted Spen Spoon. During 2013 they played in 10 friendly matches against local clubs. Also run are the eclectic ‘King Rabbit’ tournaments as well as a number of Honours Board competitions. The Rabbits Section has a large membership and also aims to raise funds to support the club through its golf and social events. Cleckheaton and District Golf Club has many different aspects that allow it to cater for many different abilities and ages of the golfing community, definitely a club that should be paid a visit to.

Where else could you enjoy such a diverse course - made up of two loops of nine holes that start and finish tree-lined and hilly. This diverse course certainly is a testament to the skill and ingenuity of Hawtree & Son, the company that re-designed the original course created in 1908 when the Club was first established. Ideally located just off the M40 motorway in the heart of Warwickshire, visitors to the Club will find lots of interesting places on its doorstep, including historic Warwick with it's legendary Castle and the birthplace of the Bard - Stratford-upon-Avon. In a recent interview the Club's Secretary/Manager David Beck had this to say: "We welcome, individual, group and society visitors and can package single round or full day events." "Our restaurant, bar and catering facilities will help make your visit truly memorable. Run by Tracey Partridge and her team, our beautiful Club Lounge boasts magnificent views over the golf course, particularly from the Restaurant patio area, which is perfect on summer evenings to watch the sun set over the course while relaxing after a long game. He and his friendly and expert team welcome members and visitors alike and can also arrange bespoke menus for you if you have a special occasion and would like more than the standard club lounge meals." As you would expect from such a quality- conscious golf club, the new professionals Chris Thornton (PGA Head Professional) & Paul Aitkens (PGA Professional) started a complete overhaul of the retail facility and indoor teaching academy. The shop is part of one of the largest independent buying groups in the Midlands area enabling all those

who visit the club to purchase a wide range of all the latest products at highly competitive prices. Having being highly praised by visitors as ‘the best in the county’ it comes as no surprise that the club is rightly proud of its indoor academy which is one of only a few within Warwickshire. A full refurbishment of this has been completed and is known as the ‘Inclusive Golf Academy’. The academy offers all aspects of golf coaching from starter groups through to elite golfers. The facility includes the latest ball flight monitoring system which consistently measures ball characteristics with the tightest tolerances in the industry. For further information please feel free to contact Chris and Paul on 01926 425 961 (option 3) or www.inclusivegolfacademy. co.uk The Club’s commitment to encourage junior and beginner golf was highlighted when last year Leamington and County Golf Club was selected by a judging panel from the England Golf Partnership as one of three finalists from 600 nominated clubs for Golf Mark Club of the year 2012. After due process, the Judges singled out the Club to receive the Runners-Up Award 2012. We all wish the Club good luck in the 2013 Awards! The Club’s continual commitment to extend the range of services it provides members and visitors alike is evident in that Leamington and County Golf Club now offers playing members and playing visitors personal insurance, providing worldwide cover, personal liability and personal accident cover, completely free of charge.

WELWYN GARDEN CITY GOLF CLUB

Welcomes Societies & New Members

If your Golf Society is planning its next golf day, Welwyn Garden City Golf Club ticks all the right boxes, offering not only a well-maintained course that is suitable for players of all levels, but also the latest in modern facilities to meet the needs of its 21st Century visitors. The Club has grown and gathered momentum since its inception in the early 1920’s, when golfers would play armed with a few irons, a niblick and a scythe - an instrument used to clear the grass from around the ball to enable it to be seen. Players were also only allowed a maximum of 12 golf balls per player; with the game being deemed to have been finished when all 12 had been lost. Thankfully today members and visitors alike can take advantage of the Club’s challenging 18-hole course; with its 19th hole to be found in its Clubhouse, as David Spring - the Club’s General Manager, outlined in a recent interview:

David added: “On a warm summer day, there can be few things better than sitting on our newly refurbished patio overlooking the course, with a cool drink in your hand. It provides a wonderful panorama of the course, and a place to watch people playing the 17th and 18th” The latest project that the Club is starting in September 2013 is the construction of a reservoir and water harvesting pond in order to guarantee the Club’s water supply for years to come. The water harvesting will be taken from the roofs and car par areas around the clubhouse and will feed into an extended pond adjacent to the 17th hole. This should provide a large proportion of the Club’s annual water requirement for the course, and will be supplemented by water pumped from the Club’s bore hole. The fact that Welwyn Garden City Golf Club is ‘home’ to prestigious players such as Sir Nick Faldo and Walker Cup player Tom Lewis, who won the 2011 Portugal Masters in only his third professional tournament, serves as a seal of approval to prospective members and visiting Societies. The last word goes to David: “We are happy to host a variety of days ranging from small societies to large corporate or charity days and are in the vicinity of three reasonably priced hotels and a vast number of local bed and breakfast establishments.”

“Thanks to a continual commitment to maintain the course to extremely high standards and improve its features, Welwyn Garden City Golf Club has been able to achieve an enviable reputation for consistently providing members and guests with a course to rival any in the area, whilst offering excellent dining and drinking facilities within a warm, friendly environment.” Set in undulating parkland, the course may at first sight seem a relatively easy test of golf, but with narrow fairways and small greens there are many scorecards that tell a different story. The course is a par 70 for men and, at 5,527 yards, par 72 for ladies, providing a fair and enjoyable test for any level of golfer; with our superb drainage making it a truly year-round course, providing a good venue for winter visitors and societies. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that many societies, including some from as far away as the South Coast and Scotland, return year after year to enjoy the course and hospitality. Welwyn Garden City is particularly proud of the improvements made to the facilities, which, since the original clubhouse opened its doors in 1928, have undergone many refurbishments and changes including recent refurbishments to the locker rooms, pro shop (including fully fitted swing studio) and bar areas.

EDZELL GOLF CLUB Secures the Prestigious James Braid Course of the Year Award 2013

T

hroughout the year, the Directors at the Golf Yearbook Online select Golf Clubs that have best demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their members and visitors alike. Therefore, in line with this philosophy, it gives us pleasure to announce EDZELL GOLF CLUB has been selected to receive the James Braid Course of the Year Award 2013, a totally independent Award Programme that is recognised both in this country and abroad.

Acknowledged as one of Scotland’s true hidden gems, Edzell Golf Course nestles in the delightful village of Edzell, midway between Dundee and Aberdeen, at the gateway to the Angus Glens, reaching into the foothills of the Grampian Mountains. Athough originally heath land in nature, a major tree-planting programme started in the 1960s has brought a ‘parkland air’ to the picturesque and peaceful setting.

The Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. The Golf Yearbook Online is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its’ readers, but also by a wider audience.

In 2001 the original course was complemented by the 9-hole West Water Course designed by Graeme Webster, as the Club’s PGA Professional Alastair Webster outlined in a recent interview:

With its tranquil setting in the foothills of the Grampians, providing fine views at every corner of the course, award-winning Edzell Golf Club offers an unforgettable experience, as players are given the chance to play on not one but two well-maintained courses.

“Players will soon realise why this course was so named, with both the 7th and 8th holes bordering the West Water. Whilst the course’s par-32 layout is predominantly flat parkland, players can enjoy beautiful scenic views from all of its tree-lined fairways.”

Designed by top golfer and architect Bob Simpson, Edzell’s 18-hole par 71 course was originally laid out in 1895 and amended some thirty-nine years later in line with recommendations from the legendary James Braid.

The Club prides itself in the warm welcome offered to visitors and Golf Societies, all of whom are not only able to experience the best in golf, but also social facilities. Little wonder then so many visitors and Societies come back year after year! Key to securing this award was the commitment on the part of the Club continually to develop and improve the golf facilities it provides. The Club’s Secretary Andrew Turnbull added: “One of life’s certainties is that things will change! This is also true for our golf courses and facilities at Edzell Golf Club. Over the years, alterations and upgrades to the course and facilities at Edzell have been occurring almost on an annual basis, with new greens, tees and bunkers, practice facilities and a 9 hole golf course being added.” “In the autumn of 2011, the committee sought the services of a highly regarded golf course architect Martin Ebert of MacKenzie & Ebert, with a view to developing a course improvement plan, to ensure that future improvements would be based on a professional assessment. During the summer of 2012, the 18 hole course was surveyed and a comprehensive report, including proposals to improve the course, were submitted to the Club. The architect was also asked to advise on improving the driving range and his proposals for this are included in the report, which has subsequently been approved by the members.” As a consequence, a programme has been developed to implement the changes; with a budget drawn up on the basis of a 3 to 4 year implementation period: Andrew added: “There are no financial borrowing requirements or exceptional member’s subscription increases necessary to implement the proposals.” In presenting this award, the Judges were also impressed with the Club’s dedication to maintain the high quality of its fairways, no matter what the weather. In line with this philosophy, the Club’s experienced Greenkeeper Graham Mackie has still managed to make improvements, despite experiencing the worst winter for decades: “We have taken the opportunity during the long winter to undertake some key maintenance tasks in order to keep the greens in excellent condition. As the weather has now started behaving, we have been able to get going with top dressing, green treatments, rubber crumbing, fairway and rough scarifying to name but a few”. Graham’s efforts have not gone unnoticed with comments on the Club’s Blog including the following: “Hello Graham, This past summer will long be remembered for rain, rain and more rain. You coped with this admirably – a credit to you and the team.” Lindsay Clark December 2012 “Hi Graham, Your staff and yourself are to be congratulated on the way the course is being maintained, especially in the extreme circumstances.” Phil

Not only is the course exceptional but the clubhouse facilities also get our vote as some of the best you will find. The food and waitress service is on a par with any fine-dining experience - so make sure you include a meal in your schedule.” - David Whyte. Receiving the James Braid Course of the Year Award 2013 is a milestone for the EDZELL GOLF CLUB and forms the final piece of the jigsaw that confirms the Club’s success, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective members and visitors. Commenting on receiving this accolade Ron Caithness, the Club Captain, said: “We’re delighted at the recognition this award provides. It reinforces the Club’s status as a destination of choice for casual visitors and society golfers alike. The investments we’ve continued to make in the overall facilities and the course in particular are fully justified if it leads to an excellent overall experience that both members and visitors believe gives real value for money.” EDZELL GOLF CLUB High Street, Edzell, Angus, Scotland DD9 7TF Tel: 01356 647283 Fax: 01356 648094 Email: secretary@edzellgolfclub.com Website: www.edzellgolfclub.com

Key to the success of the company has been the dedication on the part of Richard and his wife Virginia to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the client’s expectations. conditions for outdoor sports in Spain, this region is justly being recognized as the greatest golfing destination in southern Europe. In a recent interview, Richard outlined that despite the current volatile economic climate, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the exciting opportunities

there are for you to own your very own property in Spain: “On Spain’s Mediterranean coast some of Spain’s leading developers, have already constructed really exclusively designed projects. New golf courses and new golfing resorts have appeared everywhere. Complete new villages, surrounded

by lush green fairways and beautifully designed lakes and gardens, are competing with each other for pride of place in the international property market stakes. Polaris World, for example, has 9 new Jack Nicklaus designed courses already completed, within 30 minutes of each other, and that’s just one developer.”

“We have a wide choice of new and resale golf properties for sale in various locations on the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida, as well as other regions, including Campoamor, Corvera, La Serena, Peraleja Golf, Roda Golf, Villamartin, Las Ramblas, La Manga, Las Colinas de Campoamor, and the Polaris World courses, etc.” “Recently published surveys on developing coastal areas have shown that these two Costas have the greatest potential for growth, and provide outstanding opportunities for investment. With prices generally lower than those of other areas, together with improved standards of construction and notable all-round improvements in communications, including new roads and new airports, etc, PLUS SIX CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF SINKING PRICES, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the situation and invest in one of these stunning properties.” Richard continued: “Choosing the right location and property, is becoming more and more difficult to make, as the availability on offer just grows and grows. Knowing the area, knowing the developers and having full knowledge of the present day market situation, means, that for us, this choice is not so difficult, but for the average man in the street, it might be hard to make a final decision. The choice is enormous, and prices vary in accordance with the location, facilities available, type of property, etc.”

Ryston Park Golf Club, Norfolk A beautifully appointed parkland golf course set in the grounds of a majestic country estate, Ryston Park Golf Club represents a remarkable golfing retreat set amongst mature trees and an abundance of wildlife.

dibden The James Braid designed golf course was opened in 1933 and welcomes green fees from visitors everyday with no reserved tee times, except for on a Saturday when member competitions take priority. The par 70, sss 71 course offers a good test of golf to all abilities and is well draining, resulting in players never having to play from winter tees or putt on winter greens. The course's signature hole, a short 152 yard par3 over water is a truly memorable golf hole and the two starting holes are widely regarded as the most difficult in Norfolk; both measuring over 400 yards from the white tees with bunkers and tall, mature trees limiting the approach to the green. Aside from the golf course, Ryston Park also features two practice areas inclusive of chipping and putting greens - one with a bunker, enabling players to touch up on their short game prior to a round or contemplate what went wrong on the tough Ryston Park greens! The clubhouse at Ryston Park comprises a comfortable lounge and dining area as well as a relaxing bar where players can relax following a round on the championship golf course. The club's resident caterers have operated from Ryston Park for several years and have a reputation for preparing tasty meals and bar snacks, as well as catering for visiting golfing parties; taking all dietary requirements into consideration. Ryston Park Golf Club does have a semi-retired PGA professional as one of their members who offers limited lessons for members. However, a PGA professional located at a nearby driving range, less than a mile from the club, does offer tuition at competitive rates. Societies are welcome at Ryston Park throughout the year with seasonal packages available. The current winter golf packages include 18 holes of championship golf followed by a one course meal for just £21; and golf followed by a two course meal from the set menu at just £23 per person through to the end of March. Bacon rolls and coffee can be added before play for a small extra charge. Ladies and Mixed Opens are constantly advertised on the club’s website at www.club-noticeboard.co.uk/rystonpark, providing a fair challenge with a competitive aspect to all.
