xshott is where Andy Murray, new 2013 Wimbledon Champion and nation’s sweetheart, has chosen to hang up his trainers and chill out with girlfriend Kim Sears, after his greatest year to date. M
ark Spain may have begun his artistic career as a printmaker, specialising in original etchings and collographs, but his journey as an artist has been marked by constant experimentation with different subjects and techniques. Born in 1962 and interested in art from an early age, Mark spent three years at the Medway College of Art, studying graphics, illustrations and printmaking. After graduation, Mark’s first work was as a freelance illustrator, using airbrushing as a particular technique for producing polished and refined images. In 1984, he set up his first studio in Kent, creating original etchings inspired by the rural, unspoilt British countryside around him. After travelling abroad, his etchings were further developed from his drawings of wildlife from various game reserves in Kenya. Commissioned by Kew Gardens to produce a limited edition etching of the gardens after the great storm of 1987 to raise funds for the restoration of the gardens, Mark’s love of landscape images led him to create many other successful etching editions, most published by CCA Galleries of London and exhibited by Mall Galleries. He soon branched out into many other subjects, including abstracts, figurative works and many more themes, the production of which spanned many years and

ART which have been sold all over the world. Mark’s work has also been exhibited at the 20th Century British Art fair as well the Chelsea and Hampton Court Show, and the Barbican Contemporary Print Fair, with further distribution in USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, Spain and Holland. A creative and vigorous artist, Mark began to experiment with different forms of imagery and techniques as his career progressed. He started to use and develop his use of oils, embracing the challenge of a completely different medium. His new work in oils, mostly figurative, was very well received; in 2003 he was awarded the Fine Art Trade Guild Up and Coming Published Artist award and was nominated for Best Selling Artist in the following year. His oil paintings have been featured in exhibitions in galleries throughout the UK, including Harrods, and in 2010 was included in a very successful exhibition at the Artexpo in New York. Mark comments “My ideas can come from many sources, but are more often than not prompted by music. The majority of ideas develop when I’m working on another painting or in the evening when I’m relaxing. When this happens I do a small thumbnail size sketch so that I don’t forget it. Then at a later date I work the sketches up, until I can visualize it as a painting, with the use of models and props.” His working day varies depending on whether he is working on the print-making side of his career, or as a painter. Mark says "Having experimented with many forms of imagery in recent years, figurative work has been the most challenging and satisfying. My main goals are always to create a certain amount of movement within the image, with particular emphasis on setting a mood and atmosphere. I would like the viewer to be intrigued as to the possible thoughts of the subject, which can only add to the effect of the picture.” He likes to listen to music as he paints, which helps to infuse the painting with the right mood and feeling, as well as sometimes giving rise to more ideas for future pictures. Mark’s figurative work is mostly based on the female form, with movement a key to many of the pieces as well as form, texture and colour. Mark says “I always like to create a little energy with the brush strokes, to help give the finished painting some life. Once finished I often place the picture out of sight for a few days and then revisit it later with fresh eyes to see how I feel about it, and whether I can improve it in any way.” When working on abstracts, Mark prefers to be more spontaneous: “…I just allow the image to happen. Colour choice depends on my mood and I usually work on several images at once. I will continue to work on them over a period of several months, sometimes painting major changes to the image many times, until I’m satisfied with the end result.” As evidenced by the mercurial and constantly evolving techniques, subjects and mediums of Mark’s journey as an artist, he is beginning a whole new body of work. As well as his figurative work, Mark is also producing a range of cityscapes, adding another layer to a dynamic and exuberant artistic career.

ne of the newest and most luxurious holiday spots on the beautiful island of Tenerife, Costa Adeje is located on the southwest coast in the region of Adeje, where more than 45% of the locality is made up of protected natural areas. Declared a natural heritage site by UNESCO in 2007, the park also boasts Mount Teide, Spain's tallest mountain at 3,718 metres high. There are also spectacular inland spots such as the Barranco del Infierno (Hell Gorge), the deepest ravine not only in Tenerife but through all the Canary Islands. Special environmental protection is now afforded to the area and public access is limited, so be sure to book your place to avoid disappointment. For a more energetic day out, why not visit Siam Park, Europe's biggest aquatic adventure land and its only heated open air water fun park? Its popular attractions include the almost vertical 28-metre slide The Tower of Power and the Wave Palace, a pool that produces an astonishing 42 different types of wave. There is also the Kinnaree, an incredible 200-metre-long slide with high speeds
and Sawasdee, a safe children's area for the littlest members of the family. For golf fans, there is something a little unusual to experience. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, Golf Costa Adeje is a peculiar, 27 hole golf course with traditional stone-walled terraces spread across irregular land once used for farming. As one of the most modern and exclusive areas of Tenerife, Costa Adeje boasts first class shopping facilities. One of the most popular ones is luxury Plaza del Duque Shopping Centre, which has more than 60 shops and restaurants, including well-known brands such as Cartier, Esprit and Porsche Design. The seafront is a wonderful place for a stroll, with its squares dotted with bars and restaurants, while the town of Adeje boasts some interesting historic buildings including the churches of Santa Ursula and the convent of Guadalupe and San Pablo or the Casa Fuerte, from the sixteenth century. The land where the Castle stands was gifted to Bishop Wilfrid in 683 AD by Caedwalla, King of Wessex and is recorded in the Domesday Book. Many different royals have visited over the centuries, including Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth herself (now HM the Queen), who stayed with friends at the Castle in 1945. The ancient portcullis is one of only four still working in the UK and the beautiful landscaped gardens are still completely enclosed by a wall of medieval stonework. Hidden within the gardens and reached only by rope bridge is Mistletoe Lodge, which is available for hire for celebration meals and civil wedding ceremonies. Guests can also enjoy the professional standard 18-hole putting course, a tennis court, croquet lawn or simply wander through the twelve acres surrounding the castle and enjoy the spectacular views of the South Downs. As well as Bob, the white peacock who roams the grounds, the hotel even has its own resident ghost, known as Emily. With all this comfort, interest and luxury on hand, it’s hardly surprising that a former inhabitant would be loath to leave Amberley Castle!

L
eonardo DiCaprio‘s dilemma for most of his 21 year career as a Hollywood actor is that he looks so young. In his first major film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, he looked 17. When he made females round the world swoon as Jack Dawon in Titanic, he was 24 but still looked 17. In Catch Me If You Can, playing a charming con man, he was 28; and when he played Howard Hughes in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Leo still looked younger than his years. Leo’s breakthrough came in 2006, in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed; followed by Blood Diamond, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Suddenly, Leo was not just the beautiful boy, but a handsome man, able to carry a film. And, when he was reunited with his Titanic co-star, Kate Winslet, in Revolutionary Road, at last he looked older than her. Now, Leo is not only grown-up, but serious. He wants to make more films with a message, like Blood Diamond’s. This showed the tragedy of much of Africa in details never before seen in a cinema. That was DiCaprio playing the kind of role that he believes Hollywood stars should play more. Leo’s a great environmentalist, gives big bucks to Wildlife Conservation and believes that global warming is a great threat. Privately he practices what he preaches. He drives electric cars, refuses to fly in private planes and covered his home in California with solar panels. He says he wants to get married and have children. “I absolutely believe in

marriage,” he says. “I want to make a life about more than just my career. Most of my life has been spent on some faroff movie location, and not lived normally.” DiCaprio’s good looks and talent transcends the decades. With his hair swept back, his eyes half closed, his face fashionably unshaven, he could be the lovechild of Clark Cable, James Stewart, Robert Mitchum or Henry Fonda. Not unexpectedly, Leo is said to be looking at filming a Western, a remake of the great classic Shane, where he would star with Kevin Costner and Meryl Streep. Even if Shane does not come to pass, the point is that Leo looks a Hollywood star, he is Hollywood made and is now one of the highest paid actors in Tinsel Town. The talented Mr Caprio is only 38. He may have no Oscars yet, and only one Golden Globe award, but he has already been nominated for three Oscars, five Golden Globes, endless BAFTAS and Film Critics’ Awards. Scorsese thinks Leo will become the superstar of his generation, and expects him to scoop at least three Oscars in the next five years. Leo’s two blockbuster films this year were Django Unchained and The Great Gatsby. He is reunited with Scorsese again in The Wolf of Wall Street, a biographical black comedy based on the memoirs of New York stockbroker Jason Belfort, who was arrested in the late 1990s for money laundering and securities fraud. The film will be released in the UK in January 2014. How did he get his name? The explanation is that his parents were half-German and half-Italian. When his mother was pregnant they travelled from Los Angeles to Italy. She was looking at a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci, when her unborn child kicked for the first time, and she decided to name him Leonardo. Who cares whether this is true or Hollywood spin! It’s a great story, just as Leo’s career will be even greater in the next decade.

Cobham Village I
f you’re looking for a wide variety of independent, interesting shops, charming restaurants and atmospheric pubs, beautiful parkland and places of historic interest, the lively town of Cobham is well worth a visit. Cobham’s roots can be traced back to the Iron Age and the town appears in the Domesday Book as Covenham – a settlement in a curve of a river. The arrival of the railway in 1885 linked the area to London via Waterloo and to Guildford, causing a rapid expansion of the original village. The entrance to the High Street was widened in the 1960s, allowing the main shopping area of the town to develop into a thriving collection of shops and restaurants. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of a European Special Protection Area, the nearby commons of Ockham and Wisley are habitats for several rare species, such as the small falcon known as the hobby. Ockham Common’s rare heathland is known for its beautiful purple heather that flowers every summer. Wisley Common is also noted for its large population of dragonflies and damsel flies as well as many other species of wetland plants and birds. The one surviving working watermill in the whole of Surrey, Cobham Mill resides on the banks of the River Mole. Once derelict and abandoned for sixty years, the mill was beautifully restored in the early 1990s and is now open on to visitors on the second Sunday of the month from April to October. Operated and maintained entirely by volunteers, admission is free: visitors can see for themselves the 20
milling of corn using traditional methods. Painshill Park is one of the notable sites of historic interest in the vicinity of Cobham. Created by Charles Hamilton between 1738 and 1173, the park grounds contain a working vineyard, crystal grotto, a ruined abbey, gothic temple, a Chinese bridge and more. Well worth a visit, the park is open all year except for Christmas and Boxing Days. Cobham has also been associated with motor racing, most particularly during World War One and Two. This was in part due to the proximity of the Brooklands race circuit, whilst motor engineer and car designer Reid Railton began building the well known Railton straight eight road cars at a manufacturing facility in the Fairmile works during the 1930s. After the bombing by the Luftwaffe of the Vickers-Armstrong aircraft factory at Brooklands in 1940, the Vickers Experimental Department was dispersed to secret locations, including depots in Cobham’s Corbie Wood, Conway Cottage and Norwood Farm. There was further drama when a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter flew low over Brooklands and crashed at Cobham on 16 March 1944. Today Cobham is home to the Chelsea Football Club training ground and many of the team’s players live in the area; perhaps you might bump into them as you wander through the town’s bustling shopping streets. Cobham has an interesting and varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants which makes for a relaxing and pleasant shopping experience.

ndependent schools are at the forefront of educational achievement in every way. They are the most academically successful schools, they offer great facilities, excellent teaching and an astonishing breadth of extra curricular activities. EDUCATION board rubbers and lugging impossibly heavy book bags loaded with homework every day are disappearing. Like in every area of our lives, technology is changing education and for an increasing number of independent and maintained schools all this paraphernalia from the past is already being phased out. In its place the iPad/tablet computer, along with whiteboards, high quality Internet bandwidth, Wi-Fi and Apple TV are proving versatile teaching tools with all round educational benefits. Maybe the most obvious benefit to the pupils is it allows them to use their chosen learning style. Traditionally, in the old days, classrooms were very much a one-style fits all experience based around reading and writing. While these skills remain central to the teaching and learning experience what we’ve discovered is that some pupils are auditory learners and they’d rather listen and speak. Other people are kinesthetic/tactile learners and they benefit from being able to move things about. Tablet devices allow them to do this. Of course using this knowledge and the technology can have enormous benefits too for young people with learning difficulties like dyslexia, dyspraxia. There are excellent specialist applications available that are already being used by curriculum support teachers across the country and to great effect. So if homework is set on a tablet, the pupil can take his/her tablet home and if it’s easier they can create their essay or coursework by talking into it and printing it out rather than

EDUCATION typing it on a keyboard or writing it out in longhand. At the same time they can make use of their iTextbooks, stored within the device and any materials from class that their teacher may have created too. It also allows pupils to learn at their own speed and they and their teachers get instant feedback. This means that if children haven’t grasped a concept the teacher can add an extra lesson if necessary. There’s also the opportunity to share work – the teacher can use his/her iPad to guide the class but can also connect a pupil’s device to Apple TV, which can be of great benefit to the class. And the beauty of it is that for this and future generations this technology is going to be what they will be using throughout their lives and in the workplace too. We’ve found that tablets are also incredibly versatile – it’s excellent with junior pupils and in a variety of teaching situations too. In art it can be used for drawing for instance and in maths children can do a class test on the iPad with the results, all marked, for the teacher at the end of the session. It’s just as versatile with teaching seniors too, allowing staff to create their own iBooks to guide pupils through lessons. For some this might seem like a vision of the future – investment in technology is expensive- but schools that have already made this step into the future are already seeing the benefits. ona Lewie may have sung â&#x20AC;&#x153;You will always find me in the kitchen at parties,â&#x20AC;? but whether entertaining or during day to day life, it's clear that the kitchen is the heart of the home. One major consideration in planning a new kitchen, or upgrading your old one, is to focus on how to make your kitchen more environmentally friendly. There are simple steps you can take today to make your current kitchen more energy efficient, but if you are thinking of going all out and redesigning your kitchen completely, why not make your kitchen greener than green? The benefits to the planet can also be matched by the benefits to your purse. A major aspect of modern day kitchen design is the importance given to its environmental credentials. Many kitchen manufacturers are now focusing on eco-friendly appliances; providing energy efficient machines with environmentally friendly materials and production values. Likewise, kitchen designers also now incorporate eco-friendly appliances within their kitchens. They may also use reclaimed or recycled materials within the kitchen design itself, and design the kitchen to maximise the energy efficiency and minimise the environmental impact. Traditionally, kitchens were probably the most wasteful rooms in the house, what with electricity-eating appliances and the use of toxic cleaning chemicals. Whether you're looking for a whole new eco-kitchen or you simply want to make your existing kitchen space a little more green, there are lots of ways to improve its eco-friendly credentials. The easiest and most obvious way to start is with the recycling. Although most of us 48
already recycle our newspapers, glass bottles and other packaging, when installing a new kitchen plan ahead to include inbuilt recycling receptacles within the design of the kitchen itself. Many manufacturers install recycling appliances within their fitted kitchens, to provide an easier way of separating materials such as glass, paper and cardboard. Existing cabinets can also be retrofitted by installing a recycling bin. Those seriously committed to an eco-friendly lifestyle may want to consider using a composting bin or wormery. Worm composting is an efficient way to convert small amounts of kitchen waste into nutritious garden compost and plant food although it does require a little maintenance to ensure the wormery functions effectively. If you're replacing the worktops of your kitchen, look for a manufacturer who uses recyclable wood from sustainable sources, or adapt a previously used worktop for your own use. Wooden worktops can be sanded back, and re-varnished or oiled to restore their former beauty to save you the expense of a brand new worktop. Toughened glass and stainless steel are other options when choosing work surfaces. Not only are they stylish and sleek, they are also long lasting materials that can resist hard wear. Both are also very easy to keep clean; glass is completely non-porous which makes it the most hygienic choice for a worktop. Both glass and stainless steel worktops can incorporate an element of recycled material, which will also help to reduce the carbon foot print of your home. Glass worktops and splashbacks also come in a wide range of colours to add some extra pizzazz to your decorating scheme.

KITCHENS A major way to make your kitchen more environmentally friendly is to choose energy efficient appliances. Refrigerators can be one of the major culprits in electricity use and choosing a triple A rated refrigerator will be one of the easiest ways to save electricity and money. Keep your refrigerator full - a half-stocked fridge uses more energy to keep cool, as food helps retain the cold. Having a fridge freezer can save 20% less energy than a fridge and freezer placed side by side. Even something as seemingly insignificant as spending less time with the fridge door open can reduced the overall energy use. There are ways to increase the energy efficiency of your oven, too. Cooking more than one item at a time is more energy beneficial as opening the oven door whilst cooking can reduce the oven temperature dramatically. Make sure your cooker hood is cleaned frequently and works properly. If the hood does not ventilate properly, it will increase the temperature of the kitchen, meaning your refrigerator will have to work harder to keep food cool. It may surprise you to learn that a newermodel dishwasher can use up to 37% less water than washing dishes by hand. Make sure you never run your dishwasher unless completely full and make sure you use dishwasher salt if living in a hard water area: this will ensure the washer runs at optimum efficiency. Rather than using the drying function, which uses the most power, open the door when the wash cycle has finished to let the dishes air dry naturally. KITCHENS optimum natural light can be another way to lower your carbon footprint. Can you install another window to let in more sunlight? Energy saving bulbs can be fitted in minutes and will save you money as well as electricity. Light coloured kitchen cabinets, pale flooring (although bear in mind how often you'll have to clean it) and white or light reflecting paint on the walls and ceiling can also help increase natural light levels. As for flooring choices, what about recycled wood? Kitchen designers are increasingly using bamboo as an ecofriendly flooring material; it's quick growing, sustainable, renewable and looks great. Cork is also a great, green flooring choice, as is Marmoleum. This floor covering, like linoleum, is made from nontoxic linseed oil. You can also use recycled fabrics or organic cotton or linen to dress your windows and as table cloths and napkins. There are plenty of environmentally friendly, non-toxic kitchen cleaning products available or you could try making your own. White vinegar, lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda can all be transformed into gentle but effective kitchen cleaners and anti-bacterial sprays. If you are looking around for a new kitchen style, you need to think about exactly what your kitchen will say about you. Would a country cottage style complement your house or does something more sleek and modern catch your eye? When investing in a kitchen, you want a design that will last for years. Think carefully before you purchase that kitchen style just because it's this month's 'in thing'. High fashion dates very quickly - it's sensible to think more about the

If you ever tire of the design, you can easily update the look with fresh wallpaper, new paint or accessories. Fitted cupboards can also be re-sprayed or repainted and the handles replaced with a different design. You must first take into account the practicality of your kitchen. Do you want it to be a multi-functioning family room, or maybe just a minimalist cooking station? Either way, your kitchen has to suit you and your lifestyle. he fireplace could be said to be the true heart of a home and with winter on its way, the thought of snuggling down by a roaring log fire is very appealing. When choosing the right fireplace for your home, it's important to consider the heat requirements of your house as well as the efficiency, practicality and expense of your chosen fireplace. The traditional coal and wood burning fireplace is marvellously cosy and romantic. However, if you have small children, the safety aspects of an open fire may overshadow its other considerations and it's important to note that open fires are not particularly heat and fuel efficient, as a large amount of heat is lost up the
chimney. A wood-burning stove might be a better choice for a cold house: stoves, especially pellet burning models, are extremely heat efficient and probably the most eco-friendly choice for your home as 85% of heat is transmitted directly into the room. It's important to consider the cost implications of fitting a stove as your chimney will need to be fitted with a liner. Gas fires are clean, instant and easy to use and maintain. Modern designs can look extremely stylish but of course, a gas flame can never be quite as cosy and as welcoming as an open wood fire. Bioethanol fires can make a real style statement and give a flame effect without the heat, although they are not to
everyone's taste. Whatever fireplace you choose, you can make a real style feature of it, perhaps by using the chimney breast as a 'feature wall' in the room by painting it a contrasting colour, or by using a stylish wallpaper. However convenient it may be, buying a fireplace or stove over the internet could well prove to be a false economy. Using a local company means you will be able to see the fire in-situ and get a real feel for the dimensions, as well as being assured of the quality and reliability of the product. Be sure to get expert advice and to use a registered fitter and professional installation company to install whichever fireplace you eventually decide on.

Blandy’s Madeira A Dinner Party Winner

adeira wine is a dinner party must for the modern, up-tothe-minute hostess, and master Madeira producers Blandy’s have a broad enough range of tastes, styles and textures to see you through an entire meal should you so wish; from aperitifs and cocktails, through soups, fish and salads, patés and game, to cheese, puds and chocolate. The driest wine Sercial is clean, and crisp with a subtly nutty fruit character, mostly served well chilled as an aperitif with salted almonds or slices of fresh cut chorizo or carry through to the table to accompany starters, fish dishes and Indian cuisine. Blandy’s Madeira should be served in a generous glass to allow the bouquet to be released fully. The wines are bottled when ready to drink and do not require decanting. Each bottle is sealed with an easy open and shut stopper and will keep almost indefinitely after opening, allowing you the freedom to have several on the go at once. Madeira is a unique fortified Portuguese wine made on the mountainous Atlantic island of Madeira. Traditionally, it owes its character to the heating of the wines as they were shipped on long sea voyages. Today Blandy’s replicates the heating process in the production of Madeira wines by using the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system in which the wine is gently heated by warm air in the lofts of the company’s southfacing lodge in Funchal. f you're looking for exciting live music, an electric atmosphere and amazing cocktails, as well as delicious Lebanese food, Layla's on Esher High Street is one of Surrey's most exotic and vibrant venues. A veritable treasure trove of Eastern gourmet delicacies and luscious cocktails, and a place where you can dress up for a seriously stylish night out. Head chef Jean Ghanen and his team bring you the freshest flavours of Lebanon infused with the trends of today. From the moment we entered the restaurant the buzz of chatter and laughter surrounded us. The elegant lounge bar has plenty of low-level comfortable seating arrayed beneath a twinkling canopy of lights resembling the night sky. With soft lighting, crystal chandeliers and décor in neutral tones the dining room experience is luxurious, with the shimmering bronze hues and wall art giving a glitzy Eastern feel. With a variety of table shapes and three discreet alcoves, there is the

opportunity for both a romantic and intimate tete a tete, and for a larger group gathering. The staff were wonderfully attentive and served us throughout the evening under the direction of the charming and courteous hostess and owner Ashley Sanli. There's an a la carte menu or a sharing menu offering a multi-course fragrant banquet style feast. We enjoyed the sharing menu with a mix of tasty hot and cold Mezzes including tender chilli and garlic prawns, homemade tabouleh, vine leaves, fatoush, hummus, and cheese sambousak. Our mouth-watering mains included perfectly grilled lamb cutlets with mixed seasoned vegetables roasted with Arabic spices, chilli and olive oil served with a stack of potato dauphinoise and a mint and a spicy tomato sauce. We accompanied our meal with a wonderful Lebanese Ksara Rouge followed by a tempting selection of desserts. The cocktail menu is worth a visit on its own, with such delights as the Pomegranate Bellini, Honeysuckle champagne cocktail and the Lemon Drop Martini, as well as the classic, traditional cocktails on offer. If you don’t fancy a full meal, there are some tempting delicacies on the Lounge Bar Favourites menu, such as sesame prawns, fried calamari and halloumi pizza. The menu is very gluten free, vegetarian and halal friendly. Don't be surprised if you find yourself staying on past the end of your meal: the live music and buzzing atmosphere means you'll find it hard to leave! f you’re looking for refined British cuisine, prepared using a minimum of technology but with time-honoured techniques, the award-winning restaurant Thirty Six at Dukes Hotel should be your destination. Located on a quiet street between Mayfair and Green Park, Dukes Hotel is a hidden gem. Perfectly placed for designer shopping in Bond Street and access to the theatres of the West End, Dukes has a one hundred year history as a classic, boutique London hotel. Nigel Mendham, head chef of Thirty Six, was awarded three AA Rosettes for outstanding service and food in 2012, in recognition of the highest quality ingredients, excellent

judgement of flavour combinations and superb timing and seasoning in the preparation of his dishes. We certainly found this to be the case on our visit. We were seated in the elegant and delightfully cosy restaurant and found much to enjoy in the numerous paintings displayed on the cool grey walls, the tables set to perfection with crisp linen and a centrepiece of golden orchids held in a black glass base. We began with a rich, velvety mushroom cappuccino, topped with truffle, with an ASK Valley wine from New Zealand. Our starters were a goats cheese flan and line caught mackerel with iced horseradish; both delicious and, as for the rest of the meal, the presentation of each dish was quite exceptional. One main course was the stone bass with parsley sauce, with a tasty and unusual accompaniment of Wye Valley asparagus and crustacean mayonnaise. The other was one of the special supplements of the menu: the T-Bone of veal, with paprika dusted potatoes, dressed with watercress and a small dish of sour cream on the side. This was wonderfully tender, with a very tasty sauce. We accompanied our main course with a spicy, earthy Australian Mr Smith shiraz. We still found room for the dark chocolate pave with caramelised banana and the rhubarb and custard ginger crumble, and rounded off a splendidly enjoyable meal by taking our coffee in the charming Champagne Lounge. This newest addition to the hotel’s bars is intimate and relaxed, decorated in rich gold and forest green tones and the perfect place to let your meal settle. If cocktails are more to your taste, Dukes Bar serves the best dry martini in town - something that has to be tasted to be believed! It’s certainly refreshing to be able to enjoy meticulously prepared British food in a classic setting and the attentive and intuitive service makes for a wonderfully relaxed dining experience. Andrea Bocelli
I
heard someone say that if God had a singing voice, he would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli." The famous introduction by Celine Dion of Andrea Bocelli is testament to the power of the artist’s voice, and perhaps also to his almost mythical status as the biggest selling solo classical artist of all time. Born in 1958 on the family farm of Lajatico, in Pisa, Tuscany, Bocelli was encouraged in his musical abilities by his parents from an early age. They supported him in learning to play the piano from the age of six, then branching out into mastering the flute and saxophone. It was Bocelli’s voice, though, that was to prove his ideal instrument. Powerful and heroic, but still with a youthful grace, Bocelli’s tenor is strengthened by an unusually polished timbre. After enjoying early success in various singing competitions, Bocelli was discovered by Caterina Caselli and signed to her independent Italian record label Sugar Music. At the same time, he made his debut on the operatic stage, playing Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth in 1994. That
Christmas, he was invited to sing the Adeste Fideles before the Pope. This was the beginning of a meteoric rise to fame and success, all the more extraordinary when you consider that Bocelli has been blind since a football accident claimed his sight at twelve years old. Part of Bocelli’s appeal is the fact that he is comfortable in both the operatic and the popular music worlds. His duet with Sarah Brightman, Time to Say Goodbye, became a 1996 phenomenon, spending four weeks at Number 1 in the UK charts and selling 12 million copies worldwide. As the singer himself has said, “I never thought of having two careers in classical and pop at all, that wouldn't have worked. I only thought about having the one where I make best use of my voice, to sing the material I perform to the best of my ability." Bocelli numbers many other famous classical musicians and artists among his friends: Placido Domingo, Angela Gheorghiu, Bryn Terfel, Renee Fleming and Jose Carreras are all fans. Luciano Pavarotti was Bocelli’s mentor and friend,
the latter singing at Pavarotti’s wedding and also, sadly, at his funeral. Bocelli has performed for no less than four U.S. presidents, the royal family and two popes, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. In 2001 at Ground Zero in New York, he sang Schubert’s Ave Maria at a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. One of the singer’s biggest selling albums was Amore, produced with multiGrammy Award winning producer David Foster. The two men met when Bocelli duetted with Celine Dion on Foster’s smash hit The Prayer, and teamed up again in January 2013 to produce the most recent albume Passione. “Andrea continues to be my favourite singer of all time,” Foster is proud to declare. “I pride myself on working with great voices, but he transcends that. He's a totally legitimate classical singer... but he's also super comfortable in the pop world. Everyone wants that voice in their living room. Everyone wants that voice at their coronation. He's a singer for all people, from the common man to the Pope.” This was amply demonstrated in a huge, open air concert in New York’s Central Park in 2011, where Bocelli performed to 60,000 fans. The singer said of the concert, which became a live CD and DVD, that "Classical music should be given to the general public... This music belongs to everyone and should be open to all, it is a gift and balm for everyone and everyone should have equal access to it without exception." It seems certain that Bocelli will continue to build on his extraordinary career, bringing the best of the classics to millions across the globe.
