The Perfect Home
O
ne of Queen Victoria’s favourite boltholes was in Esher in Surrey, not really surprising, appreciating its location, which was is only nineteen miles from The Mall. Originally built for Clive of India, the Queen’s Surrey home, Claremount House, became a discreet retreat for her, and at other times on her invitation a welcome refuge for several troubled foreign Royal families seeking a safe house. Since which time, Esher’s popularity has spread from publicity shy sovereigns through to the Kings and Queens of Rock and Pop, George Harrison and Maurice Gibb to name but two. The present day Esher rich and famous, which includes many a TV and radio celebrity, all love the combination of a buzzy picture book High Street with discreetly located family houses in the leafy back lanes, and all within a 30 minute commute from London Waterloo. So what could be more perfect than living in a brand new detached 5 bedroom 4 bathroom Octagon house, situated just a couple of minutes’ walk from Esher’s bustling High Street. This house is the last available in St. George’s Place, Octagon’s small gated enclave of just six handsome town and family houses on exclusive Esher Park Avenue. All have elegant brick and stone exteriors, integral garages and off street parking. The many stylish fittings include a marble floor entrance hall with contemporary glass panelled staircase, a handcrafted kitchen with sleek glass fronted units and a full range of Miele 4
built-in appliances. Upstairs there are bespoke fitted wardrobes with flexible storage in the bedrooms, marble and porcelain stone tiled bathrooms, two of which are en-suite, and all featuring classic white sanitaryware with chrome fittings, along with cleverly designed hidden storage behind mirrored wall panels and walnut vanity units. There is a generous allocation of family living space throughout the house; a garden level family room adjoins the eat in kitchen, which has wide fold back doors leading onto a sheltered walled external patio. On the ground floor are the TV den and impressive double length drawing /dining room, where elegant French doors lead out onto a deep paved terrace and private landscaped garden. Priced at £3.5m the house is open for viewing daily between 10 a.m. – 4p.m. To view outside of opening times telephone the show house on 01372 460117 or call appointed agents Savills on 01372.461900. here can't be many wildlife artists who've also worked for the US military but Richard Symonds is one of them. His art career started in 1991, after he returned to the UK from a two year stint with the US military flying target drones for the marines. A huge leap for some, but Richard's passion for Art has always been his first love. He engagingly admits that he wasn't much of an academic achiever at school but always enjoyed painting and drawing, as well as having a very real fascination with wildlife and the natural world. Soon after Richard began painting and exhibiting, commissions began to flow in; requests for drawings and paintings of all sorts of animals and portraits. He was also quickly commissioned by Harley-Davidson to design and create a range of T-shirts and merchandise for this iconic brand. In 1996, Richard flew to Africa in order to observe the wildlife he loves up close. This trip of a lifetime meant that he returned to his Surrey studio brimming with inspiration, which soon led to his first one-man exhibition at Harrods. His trip to Africa was in part due to his contacts with family friend David Shepherd who runs the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in Shalford, Surrey - one of several wildlife charities which Richard supports. David, along with wildlife campaigner and actress Virginia McKenna opened the Harrods show. Following his first exhibition, Richard's work was soon catching the eye of sports stars, royalty and celebrities including HRH Prince Michael of Kent, John Cleese, Tipi Hedren and Gary Linker. He was also commissioned to work for and to exhibit in Lloyds of London, Warburg Dillon and Read Bank and Henley Fine Arts. Richard has exhibited his work in galleries in and around London including Christie's and Sotheby's, where record prices have been paid for his work by eager collections. His work can also be found in private and corporate collections worldwide, in countries as diverse as the USA, South Africa, Russia, India, China, Hong Kong and Europe. Richard asserts that one of the highlights of his career was being flown out to Cape

Coming home
Town, South Africa for a celebrity fundraising evening, where he was thrilled and humbled to meet Bishop Desmond Tutu. The event raised awareness of HIV and its sufferers and Richard supported the event by part-donating a lifesize tiger drawing to the charity. Recent exhibitions included the Surrey-based 'Wild at HeART' Exhibition which ran from the 1st - 24th December 2013 at the No Naked Walls Gallery in Bramley, Surrey; a retrospective show which covered 22 years of Richard's career to date. Since his first trip to Africa, Richard has conducted many other research trips in order to observe and capture the stunning wildlife and scenery of the USA, Africa, Asia, Middle East and Europe. His passion for conservation runs alongside his passion for art. The sale and auction of Richard's work has, to date, raised tens of thousands of pounds for his chosen charities Animals Asia, The Born Free Foundation and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. One of the causes close to his heart is the campaign to end the trade in bear bile farming in Asia. In 2011, Richard spent a week at the Animals Asia sanctuary in Chengdu, where campaign founder Dr Jill Robinson MBE and her team rescue and rehabilitate the Asiatic or Moon bears used for this appalling practice. Richard says of his trip “Of my commitment to Animals Asia, I have to say my research trip to China in May 2011 was one of the most emotional and harrowing experiences I have ever endured. I am determined to do all I can to help Animals Asia bring the barbaric practice of bear bile farming to an end. He continues to create drawings and prints of these extraordinary animals to raise funds for the charity and tirelessly supports its UK Ambassador, actor Peter Egan in continuing its work. Future plans for Richard include another trip to Africa to research and paint another of his iconic life-size elephant oil paintings (his first such painting, of an African bull elephant called 'Tembo', sold for a staggering $100,000.00 to a private collector in 2006. A large donation from the sale was given directly to The Born Free Foundation.) He is also currently undertaking a trip around the South West coast of the UK in order to capture some of the stunning coastal scenery on canvas in some new landscape and seascape paintings. For more information, visit Richard's newly launched website www.richardsymonds.co.uk where you can keep up to date with events, activities, new drawings, paintings and prints. Richard also offers up to 40 limited edition prints for sale directly from his website. You can also follow his daily blog on his FaceBook page Richard Symonds Artist.

Powder dreams Skiers paradise in Davos with Lawrence Cox
1
50 years ago, Davos and its close neighbour Klosters were peaceful and isolated mountain-farming villages. Today, the two (they merged in 2008) form one of the most largest and popular holiday ski resorts in the world. Combining romantic valleys and high Alpine landscapes with a vibrant, urban quality of life, Davos Klosters is a sporting mecca, health resort, business town and cultural metropolis rolled into one in the middle of magnificent mountain scenery. The increase in tourism is mostly thanks to the development of the Rhaetian Railway in October 1889. The first sledge and bob races were held from Laret to Klosters in 1904 and in 1949, Klosters was linked to the Parsenn ski region by the Gotschna aerial cableway. After the Second World War, Klosters became affectionately known as "Hollywood on the Rocks", becoming the winter home of American high society from the world of film, music and theatre. Our trip to this famous winter resort began with a pleasant flight with Swiss Air. The views of the valley are stunning, as is the gentle climb up the mountain, through tunnels and over viaducts, and through beautiful Swiss Alpine farming villages. We found the trains to be
extremely reliable and efficient. Our hotel, the 4.5 star Hotel Seehof, was just around the corner from Davos Dorf, the smaller of the two resort train stations. It is perfectly positioned for skiers, literally next door to the ski hire shop and a stone’s throw from one of the main lifts up the mountain. The hotel’s ski room on the lower floor has an alternative entry, making it easy to leave for the slopes in
the morning without having to lug your equipment through the reception area. It also includes spacious and electronically secure locker space for all your gear. We found the food in the hotel to be of a top-class standard; half board guests enjoy excellent food for breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening. The morning breakfast is an extensive continental buffet served between 711am. The dinner is served from 6.3010pm, and every evening it is a fabulous
5 course set menu (the kitchen are more than happy to make alterations to the menu if necessary to accommodate dietary requirements.) Over the week there is an exquisite variety of tastes and cuisines. Favourite dishes included the coconut chicken soup with chicken satay, beef tartar, the grilled veal steak, the lamp hip marinated in garlic honey, and the apricot sorbet served with nougat crisps. Each meal comes with wine recommendations and the waiting staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable in assistance. Our room was extremely spacious, and there is plenty of storage space offered. The room includes cable television with a wide variety of international channels including BBC and ITV. The skiable area in the Davos Klosters resort is vast - there are so many mountains to ski, we struggled to cover it all in a week’s stay. There are five main areas; Parsenn (the biggest and closest to the hotel), Madrisa, Pischa, Jakobshorn and Rinerhorn. Despite not being linked completely by lifts and pistes, there is an extensive network of trains and buses connecting the areas together, running an efficient and very frequent service that runs well after the lifts shut for the day and is included on the price of the lift

TRAVEL pass. As well as this, guests of the hotel are supplied with a Guest Card, allowing free travel around town and the surrounding area, as well as other discounts and offers. We picked up our free Inghams Ski Guide, available for all Inghams guests, and found it very useful for skiers who want to make the most of the skiing available to them when they do not know the area. We found the Ski guide sessions very laid-back and relaxed, and our rep Stephen was very knowledgeable, particularly with the history of the area and with instructions for making the most of the skiing conditions. Even if you’re not a skier, there is plenty to do at Davos that doesn’t involve flinging yourself down the side of a mountain! A highly recommended trip is the free (with guest card) journey on the train to Filisur - it really is one of the prettiest railways in the world. From Filisur, there is the opportunity to travel further to St. Moritz or even Tirano on the Italian border, along the world’s only UNESCO railway, offering stunning alpine views and incredible examples of mountain railway engineering. As well as this, there are beautiful bus journeys (costing only a couple of Swiss Francs) through the valleys of the skiable mountainside. There are biking trails and plenty of Alpine restaurants with a view. Another recommended trip is the bus from the centre of Davos through the valley, between the Pischa and Jakobshorn skiing areas, to the Tschuggen restaurant. Davos is also home to HC Davos, the town’s ice hockey team that compete in the Swiss top division. On game night, many locals descend on the beautifully timber crafted Valliant Stadium in the centre of town, all dressed in blue and yellow to support their local team in their team’s colours. It is taken very seriously here; there is a standing section at one end of the rink where the hardcore supporters gather and their enthusiasm really creates an exciting atmosphere! Unlike football in the UK, you are more than welcome to enjoy a beer here whilst watching from your seat. Whether you have been to an ice hockey game before or not, it is certainly an evening’s entertainment worth catching if you can. Why not travel with Inghams and stay at the 4.5* Hotel Seehof Davos on a half board basis, with prices starting from £1,048 per person, including 7 nights, return flights from Heathrow to Zurich and 2nd class Swiss rail transfers. The price also includes free soft drinks in minibar and free lift passes for 7-14 December departures. First class rail transfer is available for an additional £70 per person. For more information or bookings visit www.inghams.co.uk or contact 01483 791 114.

sail away on
Oceana
F
or those who aren’t very keen on air travel, one of the main advantages of travelling with P&O is just that - their no-fly option of beginning your journey at a port. Our cruise to Madeira and the Canary Islands started and ended at Southampton, so we had the joy of no luggage restrictions, a pain-free embarkation which lasted less than 35 minutes from arrival at the cruise terminal, and no waiting for our suitcases at the other end – instead, our luggage was in the cabin as soon as we arrived. Our twelve day cruise was eagerly anticipated as it involved no less than six sea days, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the numerous on-board facilities. Family friendly ship P&O Oceana caters for all age groups, not just retirees, and their attention to disabled individuals is very commendable. With over 2000 passengers and nearly 900 crew, encompassing 14 decks, Oceana is regarded today as a medium sized ship. The ship is small in comparison to some of the cruise ships now in service worldwide. In 2015 P&O are bringing into service a brand new ship, the Britannia, which will cater for over 4,000 passengers with 5 celebrity chefs including James Martin and Marco Pierre White both creating on-board menus. The first thing to strike you about Oceana is the spectacularly glamorous atrium with its Art Deco glass ceiling, two glass fronted lifts and spiral staircases spanning no less than 4 decks. The whole area is bathed in a sea of gold with delightful floor lighting. Shops and numerous bars with comfortable seating surround the atrium, with a variety of live music performances to entertain passengers throughout the day. The ship offers silver service dining at two restaurants, a bistro/cafe style restaurant with evening menus created by Marco Pierre White, a buffet-style eating area on the top deck and weather permitting, an outside grill area. The main silver service restaurants offer a comprehensive menu which rotates on a 7 day basis. The cuisine is uncomplicated, well presented and although portions are not
excessive, most importantly the food is served hot! On a daily basis the chef creates a ‘special dish of the day’. Surprisingly the wine list is quite large, offering wines from all regions of the world, some of very good quality and reasonably priced. The waiters are efficient and polite and the maître d' is 'all eyes' ensuring high standards are maintained at all times. To add a bit of glamour this cruise had four formal black tie evenings, which was a plus, particularly if you like dressing for the occasion. For those who prefer a very casual approach to dining, the buffet style restaurant, the Plaza on deck 14, offers a choice of dishes non-stop from 7.30am to 9.00pm although it can become a bit crowded and noisy. Oceana boasts two theatres which act as auditoriums for lectures, films and classical music performances during the day, and quality, excellently produced dance, music and comedy shows in the evening. If you simply fancy a drink, then you’re spoilt for choice with eleven lively bars to choose from, including a British style pub. If you’re looking to try your luck at gambling, the casino is well equipped with Black Jack and Roulette tables and numerous slot machines. There really is something for everyone on Oceana. The Whitewall Art Gallery is very good, offering original limited edition paintings by well-known modern day artists. The small library offers a reasonable choice of books and the busy card room caters for the bridge experts and enthusiasts. The Lido sun deck has two reasonable sized pools, which do tend to get busy during the day – however, the forward plunge pool is a quieter haven. Waiters are on hand to offer all types of beverage. Oceana's Oasis Spa and Health Club has an excellent fitness club offering programmes with state-of-the-art equipment, and the Spa has a tranquil setting and ambience. You can indulge in Elemis spa therapy products and enjoy massage and wellness therapies for both women and men. Ladies can indulge themselves in full beauty treatments from

facials and nails, to hair and makeup. The Lido deck also has golf practice nets and table tennis tables. Deck 7 has a traditional promenading deck, perfect to keep the waistline under control and to enjoy the fresh sea air. Finally, the Regent Street and Bond Street shopping areas on deck 6 provide a well thought-out range of general goods, fashion, beauty and jewellery products. Booking a suite on the Oceana is highly recommended but if your budget can’t quite stretch to that, the standard staterooms are very acceptable with ample storage space, compact shower and washing facilities. However, it is essential to request a stateroom with an outside balcony to really make the most of your sea trip. Tea and coffee machine facilities, an excellent fridge, and flat screen TV are available for your comfort, while the beds are king size and the cabins serviced twice daily by cabin girls and boys. Good use of mirrors ensures the staterooms have a light airy atmosphere. We specifically wanted a relaxing March cruise and the non-stop voyage from Southampton to Madeira really assisted in this. After three days at sea our first port of call was Funchal, the capital city and port of Madeira. We found it a delightful city where the values of the 1950-60's still prevail; clean streets, well dressed locals and minimal graffiti. Madeira has for decades been a favourite place for those seeking spectacular scenery, delightful architecture and restaurants offering excellent cuisine and a leisurely unhurried lifestyle sadly missing on the European mainland. We thoroughly recommend having lunch at restaurant ‘Londres’, where the local Portuguese gather. It is a busy restaurant and well worth waiting for a table. A typical lunch with wine is also excellent value at only 32 euros. Overnight Oceana cruised to the Spanish Canary Islands stopping at the quiet island of La Palma, known locally as the ‘green island’. It is probably the most volcanically active of all the islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The capital Santa Cruz de La Palma is the only town of importance on the island, where the original 17th and 18th century architecture is fiercely protected. It is basically a two street town with the magnificent Iglesia de El Salvador and the colonial style mansions surrounding the church as the centre piece. There are many street café, restaurants and tapas bars to enjoy. For those who are adventurous, a tour of the volcanic ravines is a must; La 11

TRAVEL
Arrecife, Lanzarote

Mount Teide, Tenerife
Palma's volcanic past and present is visible everywhere and the scenery is spectacular. Our Sunday visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife was interesting. During the week Santa Cruz is the business, commercial and maritime capital of Tenerife but every Sunday, a whopping 30% of the city centre becomes one huge street market, where everything from new to old is sold. All the commerce and shops close at this time. Apart from the seaside locations in Tenerife the island has much to offer in the interior which is dominated by Mt. Teide, a technically sleeping volcano which last erupted over 100 years ago. However the jewel in the crown of the Canary Islands must be Lanzarote. Destroyed less than 300 years ago by six years of violent volcanic activity, Lanzarote's landscape resembles the surface of the moon. However, from this apparently barren landscape, fine wines are produced in abundance. Preserving its natural beauty was the world famous artist, Cesar Manrique, whose home is now a national monument. We strongly recommend a visit to his home where you will witness how architecture, art and nature can beautifully combine in flowing symmetry. Arrecife is the capital and main port of Lanzarote. Following a further sea day, we arrived in Lisbon, capital city of Portugal. Regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful cities, it is a place where a day visit is just insufficient. Dominating the city is the triumphal arch on the banks of the river Tagus with its magnificent plaza buildings. The arch leads on to a spectacular boulevard ending at the black statue of King Jose 11. Trams both modern, and dating back to the early 19th century, make it easy to get around this beautiful city. Close to Lisbon is Sintra with its former Royal Palaces and an essential place to visit. As the Portuguese say ‘To leave out Sintra in seeing the world is no better than travelling blindfold’. P&O is one of the world’s oldest cruise lines. From its humble beginnings in the mid-18th century, when it was commissioned to carry mail to the Iberian Peninsular, it quickly expanded and developed into a passenger service carrying immigrants from the UK to Australia and New Zealand. Now part of the Carnival Cruise organisation the P&O fleet of cruise ships cover cruising around the world. For full information on P&O cruises visit www.pocruises.co.uk or telephone 0843 3740111. Lord’s Cricket Ground
celebrates its 200 year anniversary
I
t seems hard to believe but the venerable Lord’s Cricket Ground celebrates its 200 year anniversary this year. The current location of Lord’s ground is actually its third incarnation. The very first match ever played on ‘Lord’s Cricket Ground’ took place in 1787 on a newly built pitch in what was known at the time as Dorset Fields (Middlesex and Essex took the honour of the opening match). MCC then moved to a new ground in the Eyre Estate of St John’s Wood in 1811. Rather unpopular as a place to play, when it emerged that the Regent’s Canal was due to be built straight through it, Thomas Lord happily accepted compensation and moved the Ground to its current location in 1814. The Lord’s Bicentenary is being celebrated in a number of different ways in 2014. Fans of cricket can access an interactive 3D timeline which charts the history of the ground from its very beginning right up to its present day incarnation. View it at www.lords.org and see how the ground’s history is brought to life, drawing on architectural plans and archive material which have been incorporated by talented 3D artists and animators into a fascinating presentation. As well as the history of the Ground, the timeline also highlights the some of the recent modernisation of the last 20 years, including the construction of the J.P. Morgan Media Centre in 1999 and the floodlights in 2009.
Some of the highlights of the matches soon to be played at Lord’s include the MCC versus the Rest of the World, with the men’s match being held on Saturday 5th July. Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne will respectively captain the MCC and the RoW teams with a host of other celebrity players expected to play. Hospitality from packages are available www.lords.org/fixtures while tickets are still available for the women’s match on 19th May. MCC is also hosting matches between Oxford and Cambridge, and Eton and Harrow on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May respectively. On 22 June 1814, MCC played Hertfordshire in the first match to be staged at the new Lord’s Ground. Two hundred years later, MCC and Hertfordshire will compete again on the Anniversary Day celebration of 22 June
2014, with some big names shortly to be announced as the prospective players. For the first time since 1966, spectators will have an opportunity to watch cricket from the Victorian Pavilion (normally the preserve of MCC Members) and go behind the scenes of one of the most famous buildings in world sport. There will be special tours of the Ground, themed food and drink offerings, music provided by local community groups and various cricket displays from ex-professionals. Tickets are available to buy for just £10 (adults) and £5 (under 16, over 65) for seats in any stand. Visit www.lords.org/fixtures for more information. Want to get involved with the Bicentenary celebrations? MCC will be erecting a large “200” sculpture, featuring quotes, pictures and images submitted by fans, Members and players. Why not submit your own offerings and tell the world what makes Visit so special? Lord’s www.lords.org/sculpture to submit your pictures. You can also cast an online vote to help MCC discover what is considered to be the best individual performance at the current Ground and the best match ever played there. Submit your vote, accompanied by an explanation of 300 to 500 words for each case by email at bicentenary@lords.org or by post to the Media & Public Affairs Department, MCC, Lord’s Ground, London, NW8 8QN. 13

Beauty supplements in tablet, shot and powder form are part of a fast growing trend that is exploding globally. In a recent study conducted by Mintel, researchers found that most European women take vitamins and supplements to boost their health. However, not many of us actually take anything to improve our skin from within. This is hardly surprising as taking the currently available crop of skin supplements is far from a pleasant experience. Not so with skinade. It’s a 150ml drink, pleasantly and naturally flavoured with peach and magosteen and full of goodness that packs a real punch for your skin. Each bottle contains 7,000mg of hydrolyzed marine collagen, omegas 3 & 6 (from organic flaxseed oil), MSM (natural organic sulpher), calcium ascorbate (special form of vitamin C), l-lysine, a complex Vitamin B structure and with only 35 calories mostly from protein it’s even suitable for those on a low carb diet. Impressively, an independent survey of 122 participants revealed that 96% of participants taking Skinade for 30 days reported that their skin was more hydrated and more radiant, making Skinade an essential addition to your daily skin care

In regards to wrinkle reduction a double blind placebo controlled study published in Germany (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology) showed a conclusive reduction of wrinkles in the skin, 65% more pro-collagen, 18% more elastin and a maximum reduction in eye wrinkle volume of almost 50% of those consuming just 2500mg to 5000mg of collagen and Skinade contains 7000mg of collagen. Flower Show Y
ou know that summer is really here when the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is on the calendar. Running from the 8th to the 13th of July, the world’s biggest Flower Show takes place against the spectacular backdrop of Hampton Court Palace. This year, the themes of the show will be Grow, Escape and Inspire and every gardening fan will find something to interest them in a show that celebrate the best of horticulture, with its eclectic mix of gardens, displays and shopping. As well as the main themes of the show, additional highlights will include a Growing Tastes Marquee which will be a big draw for foodies: almost 40 food stands from artisan producers will offer a variety of home-grown produce to sample and buy. The Marquee will include a cookery theatre where you can learn how to take plants from your plot to your dinner plate. Another amazing spectacle will be the Rose and Floristry Marquee, a circus-themed marquee where the amazing floral arrangements will depict clowns, ring masters and
circus attractions. Try your hand at your own arrangement with the help of professional florists who will be available to assist you in creating your own floral masterpiece. Lovers of flowers will also want to check out the Floral Marquee, which this year hosts 95 award winning nurseries from around the UK. Younger visitors (who can attend for free with a full-fee paying adult – two children per visitor) might want to visit the Scarecrow competition where infant and primary schools have created a host of scarecrow friends. This year, the Conceptual Gardens are based around the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins. The seven gardens, created by horticultural artists such as Marcus Green (‘Sin’), Rachel Parker Soden (‘Lust’), Katerina Rafaj (‘Gluttony’) and Nilufer Daniss (‘Wrath’) are spectacular conceptual imaginings of the Deadly Sins, sure to be one of the big draws of the Show. Some of the other Show Gardens include The Essence of Australia garden, designed by Jim Fogarty, which celebrates
Australian flora and contemporary design; The World Vision Garden, by John Warland, which is inspired by the 30th anniversary of the Ethiopian famine and The Flintknapper’s Garden, an unusual storytelling garden by first time exhibitor Luke Heydon. There will also a Your Garden, Your Budget category, where visitors can learn how to create great gardens with a minimal budget. The Flower Show Preview Evening will be a lovely prelude to the main event. The evening will begin the show opening, taking place on Monday 7 July from 5pm - 10:30pm. Why not enjoy the wonderful floral displays and the spectacular gardens while listening to live music, before having a picnic or enjoying a meal in one of the restaurants? Rounding off a perfect evening is a magnificent fireworks display against the stunning backdrop of Hampton Court Palace. Are you happy to smile?
S
miling is something we do every day and yet many people are self-conscious about showing their teeth when they do. Smiling shouldn’t be something to avoid, especially during the summer season. Whether you are concerned about the look of just one tooth or you want your whole smile improved, Cosmetic Dentistry offers patients a whole range of treatment options that will improve your life giving you renewed confidence to smile. You would be pleasantly surprised about how affordable cosmetic dentistry can be with the variety of treatment and payment options. I want to thank one of the many patients that I feel privileged to have helped over the past fourteen years for putting her experiences of cosmetic dentistry into print. “Whilst I had always done my best to look after my teeth, my ‘smile’, such as it was, degenerated because of an auto-immune disease. I was always upset about the appearance of my teeth despite regular dental visits and looking back now, I find it quite sad that I have no photos of me smiling alongside my children. It was my sister that recommended Barry who listened carefully, as I told him
of my dental history. He clearly wasn’t fazed by anything and recommended a course of treatment. I had the work done in two three-hour sessions. “Going to the Haslemere Dental Centre was genuinely a life changing experience for me.” When he had finished the upper teeth, I was very reluctant to take a look. He eventually put a mirror in my hand and as soon as I saw what he had been able to achieve I burst into tears. “When people ask me what is different about Barry, I tell them the first thing is his attitude: he genuinely wants to help you, and it shows. The next thing is the standard of his work – he’s a perfectionist, and he uses the best available materials.” Of course it’s always wonderful to receive testimonials but this extreme case demonstrates that there is a treatment option to suit almost every patient’s needs. So if you want to improve the look of one tooth or are considering an improvement to your whole smile, book a no obligation consultation. Dr. Barry J Oulton is the only dentist in the UK to have obtained the B.Ch.D, the Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies, received the highest level “Masters” qualification from the Rosenthal Institute New York and is Senior Instructor for Dr Larry Rosenthal both in the UK and USA and owns the Haslemere Dental Centre. 56 Wey Hill, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 1HN Telephone: 01428 643506 or visit www.somethingtosmileabout.co.uk

New state of the art driving range at
Silvermere I
t’s been a busy year for Silvermere - one of the south east’s most popular golfing destinations. Located in the heart of Surrey, Silvermere has always been one of the most forward thinking golf courses in the country. Offering 18 holes set amongst mature woodland, Silvermere has one of the best maintained and most challenging of public courses in the area. 2014 has seen the biggest developments yet. There has been major investment across the complex including the complete remodelling of
the bunkers on the 1st 6 holes; the opening of a new short game facility and the complete renovation of the Inn on the Lake. Now after 10 years of discussions and planning and after a short closure, work is now complete on a state of the art two-tiered driving range. Silvermere’s new driving range is fitted with 52 individual bays over two levels. The ground floor bays feature the latest Power Tees, as well as the being individually laser measured to show exact target distances, making the golfers experience second to none.
Whether you are looking to play the parkland course, shop in the Doug McClelland Golf store, pop in for a bite to eat or practice at the new state of the art driving range, Silvermere has everything a golfer needs in one place. Silvermere has never offered so much. The annual golf membership subscription at Silvermere is just £1345 for unlimited golf all year round as well as the numerous other benefits across the complex, including a full social and competition schedule. dream Gardens
eed another room in your house? Why not think outside the box and transform your garden into a versatile extra room this summer? With a little bit of effort and thought, your garden can be a children's play area by day, and in the long summer evenings, it can become an oasis of tranquillity and an attractively lit al fresco dining area. The first thing to consider is your garden furniture. The functional benefits of good garden furniture are obvious - what better way to enjoy alfresco dining than sitting comfortably as the barbecue sizzles away? Transform your garden into an outdoor oasis with suitable garden chairs, tables, parasols and sun loungers. The Victorians popularised wrought iron furniture and it is still the most durable material for outdoor furniture. Iron furniture is sturdy and won't topple over,
although its heavy weight means it can also be hard to move around (those with bad backs should probably go for something lighter!). Wrought iron can easily become discoloured so it's best to stay clear of white and go for dark green, brown or black. Wooden garden furniture is also very popular. As a natural substance, wood blends in well with the rest of your garden and colours match favourably with most types of patio or decking. There are plenty of different styles, colours and woods available but teak is deservedly popular as it is the most durable wood for the garden. High oil content means that teak furniture requires little maintenance and won't age when exposed to extreme weather. Another popular material for garden furniture is rattan garden furniture. This is also guaranteed to last for years, is hard wearing, durable and stylish. Rattan is weatherproof and will

not fade or rust; it is also UV resistant, frost resistant and comes impregnated with mould and mildew inhibitors. Parasols can give good protection from the sun or there are sun shades and sails which will also provide welcome relief from the sun's rays. Don't forget to bring any canvas cushions or sun lounger padding indoors at night or risk them getting wet with rain or dew. With the furniture sorted out, you can start thinking about outdoor cooking. Island kitchens, wood fired ovens, barbecues and chimineas are a stunning addition to your garden. They are great for entertaining and a fun way to cook at any time of the year but in summer, an outdoor kitchen really comes into its own. More and more sophisticated barbecues are becoming increasingly available and are growing in popularity. You can go for a classic charcoal barbeque; with the simplicity of a charcoal grate, grill and lid, there's very little to go wrong. Of course, you do have to wait for the coals to heat, so others might prefer the speed and ease of a gas barbecue: the perfect flame at the push of

a button, easy temperature control and no cleaning. Taste tests suggest it does not really make much difference to the food, so it really is a matter of choice. Be sure to test the sturdiness of the barbeque when you buy it - if it falls over in the shop, you can be sure that it will do the same at home. Cooking grates are usually made from heavy-duty plated steel or chrome-plated aluminium. A thicker, heavier cooking grate will last longer and distribute and retain heat better. Good gas barbecues usually have two or more separate burners, to allow greater control of heat. Those with one burner are generally cheaper, but don't offer such good heat control and may result in hot and cold spots. Weber barbecues are rapidly becoming more popular in the UK, partly because they offer very good heat control. Their 'stopwatch engineering' allows you to go from preparation to sizzling food in a matter of minutes. So you'll be able to use your garden 'room' well into the night, you'll need to consider suitable garden lighting. Garden lighting is practical but is also an

DREAM GARDENS the table, and can also be used to light walkways, or different patio levels. Don't forget outdoor fairy lights which can create a really beautiful twinkling display when hung from trees and on fences. Another aspect you might want to consider is planting some night-scented plants near your patio or decking. Aromatic plants such as border phlox, honeysuckle, evening primrose and night-scented stock will all send delicious perfumes into the evening air for you to enjoy. Most evening scented plants are pollinated by moths and have pale flowers, so you'll also be able to enjoy the look of them as well as the scent in the evening. We may not have many warm summer evenings in England but it's nice to make the most of them when they do occur. Those who really want to push the boat out can install a garden building - not a shed, but a lodge. The Julian Christian range of garden buildings are beautifully designed and made from timber sourced from well-managed and sustainable forests. With more than ten building styles, seating from four to 15 people, there really is one for any garden. The roof can be thatched or cedar shingled, and canvas panels and heaters are also available to protect against inclement weather. Visit www.gardenbuildingsandstructures.co.uk for more details. Of course, good weather in an English summer is never guaranteed. But with the right furniture, cooking implements, plants and lighting, your dream garden will be there for you to enjoy when the sun does finally come out.

the Laurence LLewelyn-Bowen Interview
S
pring has sprung once again, and with it we can look forward to an injection of colour and warmth after what has inarguably been a dark and dreary winter. We caught up with the master of home interior design Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen at The Ideal Home Show. He spoke about a recent change in the direction of interior decoration, and what we can do to introduce light into our homes in advance of the changing of the clocks. “At the moment it's all about the excitement of 'fashionability' in interior decorating,” Llewelyn-Bowen imparts. “I think that's lovely; it shows that as a nation we've become much more confident as interior decorators.” It seems that the clouds over Britain have finally parted, and our interiors are taking note. “You know, we are all wanting to bring a sense of that gorgeous British 'outdooriness' into our homes to celebrate the fact that the days are getting longer, the weather is getting sunnier, the floods are receding finally! I was on the verge of actually growing my own rice at one point!” “There's a real feeling of the year having moved on now; let's indulge ourselves in bright, light optimistic decorating.” Llewelyn-Bowen notes a certain move away from the emphasis on modernity and technology that has dominated the interiors scene for the past couple of years. If this is the case, will we be seeing more classic British interiors in the following months? “One of the things I find very interesting is that technology is looking much more retro. And as an interior designer, I really like that. I really like the fact that everything from a light switch to a digital radio now looks good in one of my interiors, rather than my interiors having to live up to these big black lumps of technology that we had a few years ago.” This move towards retro is terms of both design and decoration should be viewed in a positive light. “I think that actually as a nation we are using retro in a very intelligent way. We are not doing it to run away from the future, we are actually taking the past with us into the present and then into the future. And I think that is an important distinction - interiors a few years ago were very introspective. And I loved that, I think people found the outside world a scary place, a very challenging place so they wanted their interiors to be a real sensual overload that allowed them to forget about the drudgery of day to day living. But I think now it's like someone has

It's much less dark, things are much less cocooning, things now are much more engaging, much more confident, much more hopeful.â€? If you too want to bring this more hopeful outlook to within your home, one sure-fire way to embrace this lightening of mood is perhaps the easiest one of all; by making the most of your windows. “One of the most efficient things you can ever do with the amount of light that comes into any room, is to have them cleaned.â€? Llewelyn-Bowen informs us. “It was something I didn't realise until quite recently! But actually it's really straightforward. You can increase the amount of light coming into a room by about 30 per cent when you have your windows cleaned... which is just crazy.â€? The energy and light that Llewelyn-Bowen speaks of can be clearly felt in the air at The Ideal Home Show. “There's a sense that the nation is about to start on one giant spring clean and get ready for a very exciting year‌ I feel that The Ideal Home Show is really The Chelsea Flower Show for the British home. It's a defining moment of the year where everybody comes together and is incredibly nice to each other. There's no barging in the queues or disgruntled behaviour, everybody is going 'oh, no, you go first‌' It's a really nice thing to be part of.â€? Fireplaces Opening up an old fireplace is like striking gold in your very own home. Build it during the summer months and enjoy a cosy winter
I
n addition to a glowing, warmer, more welcoming living room, you are creating a much healthier and more invigorating atmosphere, and adding to the character of your investment into the bargain. Solid fuel fires are clean and easy to operate, highly efficient and flexible. All you require is professional advice and practical help to ensure that you comply with Building Regulations. Alterations to fires and fireplaces are classified as building work and subject to Building Control approval. You are advised to contact your local fireplace
installation company. Spending an evening snuggled around the hearth offers the ultimate riposte to the winter blues. Whilst a fitted traditional fireplace can elevate the value of a house by up to £10,000, this isn't a practical choice for everyone. However, the wealth of fireplace options available offers scope for functionality and style whatever your heating preferences. The memories of a chilly winter will be fresh in your mind so what better way to ensure you’re cosy afor Christmas by choosing and installing a fireplace over
the coming summer months? There are many things to be considered in choosing the perfect fireplace but the first and most important consideration must be the chimney design. Your local fireplace installation company has a wealth of experience and expertise to offer. Make sure you consider the type of fire you want, whether that’s gas, woodburning, pellet or solid fuel. Price is also a consideration – cheaper fireplaces are created from a lesser quality metal and may not be as ‘cleanburning’ as a more expensive model. One good thing about beginning your research into the perfect fireplace early in the summer is the opportunity to narrow down your choice to a fireplace that’s both economical, beautiful and efficient to run. Woodburning stoves are proving particularly popular with householders in 2014 as they are both environmentally friendly (burning wood, surprisingly, is a carbon neutral activity as the trees absorb as much carbon dioxide when growing as they emit when burning) and also a very cost efficient way to heat your home, especially in these times of high energy prices. Whatever fireplace you eventually decide on, you can be sure that its addition will add both value and comfort to your home.

ou might think that you've stepped back in time entering Portugal's most northerly city, Oporto. Ancient cobbled streets and a wealth of historic monuments make this a UNESCO World Heritage site, famed for its ancient Port cellars. Under three hours away, with regular flights from the UK, Oporto is one of Europe's most interesting but less well known historic city destinations. Major renovations and recent investment within the city have encouraged a rise in luxury hotels, pedestrian walkways, a cable car and a vibrant restaurant scene - not forgetting long sandy beaches with wooden esplanades and surrounding golf courses. Oporto dates back to the first century BC when, under Roman rule, it played a key role as a main trade route between Lisbon and Braga. During the 14th and 15th centuries it became an important ship building centre and it was from here that Henry the Navigator set sail in 1415 to explore the west coast of Africa initiating the Portuguese Age of Discovery. By the 1700s, wine was already an important commodity and contributed to the emergence of Port as we know it. You can still see the old boats which used to transport wine from the vineyards in the Douro Valley (some 70 kms to the east), called “barcos rabelos”, moored along the quayside in the centre of the old city. In 1703, the Methuen Treaty established trade relations between England and Portugal and by 1717, the first English trading post f o r

TAYLORS PORT Port wine was already operating in Oporto. Established in 1692, Taylor's Port was one of the first British Port houses to be established in Portugal. Dedicated to the production of top quality Port, it quickly gained a reputation for its prized Vintage Ports. Over 350 years later, Taylor's is still owned and run by descendents of the founding family. The company is regarded as the benchmark for Vintage Port and Taylor's has extensive stocks of bottled matured and Aged Tawny Ports which are housed at its cellars (or lodges) in Vila Nova de Gaia. Open throughout the year in Rua do Choupelo for tours and tastings, Taylor's lodge is a great place to visit if you are keen to learn about Port and pick up tips on pairing Port with food. If you are a chocoholic, have you tried Green & Blacks 70% Dark with Taylor's Late Bottled Vintage or a chilled glass of Taylor's 10 Year Old Tawny with crème brulée or almond cake? After your visit, wander across the road and check in to the luxurious hotel, The Yeatman, where you can enjoy commanding views of Oporto from one of 82 bedrooms which have been carved into the hillside. Its Michelin star restaurant, award winning wine cellar and Caudalie wine spa are added attractions for those looking for a luxury haven from which to explore the city. In the evening, relax with a glass of Taylor's Chip Dry White Port, topped up with ice, tonic and a sprig of mint accompanied by a plate of local salted almonds on your private terrace and enjoy the dancing night lights of the city from your hilltop view. There are a number of Port styles produced by Taylor's to suit all palates and pockets to enjoy here in the UK. If
you are celebrating a 50th birthday or anniversary, splash out on a bottle of Taylor's 1964 Single Harvest Port which is beautifully presented in a quality beech-wood box. Despite its venerable age, the 1964 is surprisingly youthful with hints of warm butterscotch and molasses, crisp acidity and a rich, spicy black pepper finish. If time is on your side, Taylor's 2011 Vintage Port is considered to be one of the best Port vintages in decades. Powerful and concentrated with dark plum and spicy cherry flavours, this is a gorgeous multilayered wine that will continue to improve for decades. For drinking now, enjoy Taylor's First Estate with dark chocolate puddings or a bottle of Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas 2001 Vintage Port with a fine blue cheese. For more information on Taylor's Port, what to buy, how to serve, recipes and quirky Port traditions, visit www.taylor.pt. Details about The Yeatman can be found at www.theyeatman-hotel.com

Pays d'Oc IGP the most dynamic denomination
D
rawn from the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Pays d'Oc IGP is one of the most dynamic wine denominations today - the freedom which the winemakers have to exploit the natural diversity of the climate, soil and 56 grape varieties allows a level of innovation unseen in other areas. During the past 25 years, Pays d'Oc IGP wines have become the French varietal wine reference point for consumers around the world. The Pays d'Oc territory stretches across 4 departments with 100,000 hectares of vines planted. The natural diversity of the climate, soil and grape varieties combined with the freedom within Pays d'Oc IGP allows its innovative winemakers to fully express their creativity and know-how. This results in a surprising diversity of wines to match different tastes and cuisines! For more details about Pays d'Oc IGP please visit www.paysdoc-wines.com or alternatively go to www.paysdocstory.com/uk
The grape variety is at the heart of the wine's personality, colour, fragrance and structure. When it grows in Pays d'Oc, the grape variety (ies) shape the wine's character. The sensitivity and know-how of each wine grower influences its power, its bouquet, its acidity and its longevity. Rooted in Pays d'Oc, the grape varieties express themselves in French but with a strong Mediterranean accent …. Whether they are authentically Pays d' Oc or whether they were adopted by Pays d'Oc soils, below is a selection of grape varieties that you might want to look for in your local shop: For the white lovers - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Viognier In the pink - Syrah, Cinsault or Grenache For those out there who prefer a red: Merlot, Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon

The Maestro returns to Hampton Court

Vecchia Roma
his summer sees the welcome return of Vecchia Roma, the famous Italian restaurant first opened in 1971 by Toni DiMichele and his trusted chef Aldolfo. After a fifteen year hiatus, the restaurant has undergone a major refurbishment and is now delighting a new generation of restaurant-goers with Toni’s impeccable taste as the ‘Maestro’ of Italian silver service. There are no bare tables here. Toni believes in the proven values of a quality restaurant experience: white table cloths, crisp napkins, flowers on the tables, smartly tailored waiters demonstrating panache and humour, and above all, he himself provides every one of his guests with his special warm charm. Eating out is meant to be a pleasure and an experience. Toni knows this and wherever possible meets these expectations. After 40 years in the business, he knows a good kitchen, run by chef Adolfo, which will turn out high quality Italian cuisine, day after day. The restaurant itself is a sight worth seeing: superb murals depicting Roman scenes adorn the walls and curved arches offset these scenes to maximum effect. Open every day for lunch and dinner, Vecchia Roma offers a set menu and an extensive à la carte choice of dishes. Like all professionals, Toni and Adolfo excel at a variety of different dishes, (some of which are not on the menu, so ask the waiter or Toni and see what they offer…) The set menu provides a choice of six starters and six main courses plus a wonderful choice of desserts from the sweet trolley. Our dining experience included Adolfo’s homemade pasta. Something that sounds so simple but the Rigatoni Porcini with wild boar sauce had absolutely amazing flavours. The avocado and smoked haddock gratin, served in a small dish straight from the oven, was equally delicious. This was followed by the Scaloppa alla Marchigiana (grilled veal escalope) a dish that was melt-in-the-mouth cut, with aubergine, tomato and mozzarella cheese topping. My companion enjoyed the Cinghiale alla Calvados – very tender wild boar pan-fried with fresh apple and calvados – a very intriguing blend of flavours. The wine chosen from an extensive list to accompany our meal, was the Vella Barbi Umbria Rosso 2011. For dessert, I indulged in an Italian truffle and my partner had a delicious tiramisu. With freshness and quality of the meat and vegetables accounted for (Toni purchases the goods directly from the London markets), you know a wonderfully enjoyable visit is assured. London Bridge Hotel with Lawrence Cox
Y
ou can explore some of the best attractions in London when you stay at the London Bridge Hotel, described as where ‘history meets hospitality’. Situated in the heart of the new ‘London Bridge Quarter’ in quirky Borough Market, on the trendy South Bank, and just around the corner from the tube station. London Bridge Hotel’s rich history is reflected in its elegant design; where traditional and modern meet in a blend of classic and contemporary styles. A stone’s throw from London Bridge
Hotel is the city’s hottest new attraction, ‘The View From The Shard’ - a must-do experience on your trip to the capital. Visit the viewing gallery (which can be booked directly from the London Bridge Hotel) and take in a unique 360 degree view of London and the surrounding counties from the top of The Shard, Western Europe’s newest, tallest building. Other attractions such as Shakespeare's Globe, Southwark Cathedral, Tate Modern, The London Eye and the Tower of London are also right on your doorstep. A gruesome
but fascinating history of the area can be explored at the nearby Old Operating Theatre Museum while antiques lovers can explore the delights of local Bermondsey Antiques Market. Dating back to the 12th century, St Thomas's Chapel lay on the original site of the hotel. The hotel building was erected in 1916, was used as a wartime telephone exchange from 1940 and opened as London Bridge Hotel in 1988; during the renovation, Roman artefacts, including a comb and a mosaic floor, were discovered and have been preserved in the Museum of London for future generations to enjoy. The hotel has three restaurants including the Quarter Bar and Lounge which was designed specifically with relaxation and comfort foremost in mind by interior designers, Design LSM. The original parquet flooring has been completely restored and now lends a “lived-in” feel to Quarter Bar. The bar menu features ‘social food’; ideal for relaxed meetings and conversations with a wide selection of sharing platters and small dishes of vegetarian, fish, seafood and meat options, for the ultimate in urban grazing. During our visit we enjoyed the burger sharing platter, the crowd favourite from the menu. It included five mini burgers each, with a variety of meats and accompanying relishes, served with gorgeous thick-cut chips. The extensive drinks and cocktail menu features both the classics and seasonal favourites inspired by the produce from nearby Borough Market. We sampled the Pineapple Passion Daiquiri and the London Bridge Fizz – a Prosecco based cocktail with cherry brandy and crème de mûre. Both were delightful and exquisitely presented. London Bridge Hotel is suitable for both business and leisure travellers, with its three luxury serviced apartments and 138 bedrooms. Guests have free access to the Fitness First gym onsite and the hotel is a popular one with runners competing in the London Marathon as it is situated very close to the route and provides services such as power breakfasts and changing rooms.
