UP FRONT Ten years is a long time in technology terms and if we look back over the last decade, the way we record and store our data has changed beyond all recognition. The days of piles of old CCTV footage sitting around on VHS tapes have pretty much been eliminated. Yet for all the advantages that digital recording, IP connectivity and remote monitoring and retrieval have brought us, it still presents many a security manager with quite a headache. While the majority of us are still getting to grips with DVRs, things have again moved on. We now are presented with the option of in-camera recording and back-up on the Cloud. It’s not surprising that there is a fair amount of confusion in the market. On page 24 we tackle this ‘data dilemma,’ talking to a range of security systems manufacturers about the whys and wherefores of data storage and most importantly retrieval. What happens if the plug
is pulled on your network? What if your bandwidth requirements are heavy? What benefits does Cloud computing hold and who is it suitable for? I hope this article provides you with some food for thought. Also in this issue we take a long hard look at analytics, or VCA in its abbreviated form – this time in the context of retail. And it is interesting to see that the real value of this application for retailers at least seems to be in keeping an eye on their customers – not to see what they are stealing but what they are buying. While of not much interest to the security operative overseeing the cameras, it certainly will provide the employer with some highly valuable insights into customer behaviour that will help improve the bottom line. Counter Terror Expo puts spotlight on region’s homeland security concerns Clarion Events Middle East will launch the first edition of Counter Terror Expo in Abu Dhabi later this year promoting advanced strategies and technologies to protect both people and infrastructure from the threats posed by terrorism. To be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi from 30 October to 2 November, 2011, the four-day Counter Terror Expo will provide the ideal platform for experts from governments, security services, law enforcement organisations and the armed forces, along with leading exhibitors and solution providers, to combat the potential threat of terror in the region. The conference will include lessons from operations, demonstrations of sophisticated techniques and advanced technologies designed to deter and defeat both existing and emerging terrorist, criminal and other violent threats; identifying the best ways to get the public proactively involved in counter-terror strategies; crossexamining global counter-terror
strategies to identify best practices and the lessons learned; considering cyber threat to critical infrastructure and understanding the solutions available to tackle this growing challenge; and much more. A recent report published by Forecast International revealed that in 2010 the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries invested US$68.3 billion in defense and security, with an estimated rise to US$72.4 billion in 2011 and US$82.5 billion by 2015. The investments indicate GCC government concern for the threat of terror and the protection of their people and infrastructure. Exhibitors at the expo include companies offering various services, such as information management and security, location tracking, airport and transport security, covert surveillance and communication. Future Fibre Technologies secures contract for 500km Iraqi pipeline project Future Fibre Technologies (FFT), working with their exclusive in-country agent AYA International, have signed a contract to protect 500 kilometres (310 miles) of buried pipeline in Iraq. FFT and AYA International will be working in conjunction with ZTE Corporation, the prime contractor for the pipeline security and communications. This is the first FFT pipeline security system installed in Iraq, meeting all of the current design and performance specifications, plus providing a cost-effective path for expansion in the future. This latest win builds on FFT’s record of success in protecting buried oil and gas pipelines against both deliberate and accidental damage. The solution benefits include a simple to understand and use operator interface, ability to operate in harsh environments, flexibility in overall design, and local technical support capability through AYA.

Middle East prison project goes live for AppVision AppVision’s Security Manager solution has been deployed at three new prisons in The Middle East, centralising hundreds of CCTV cameras at each site. The installations at undisclosed locations are connected to AppVision through several Milestone corporate video management servers, a GE facility commander access control system, GE FACP fire alarm panels, Honeywell Galaxy intruder panels and as Southwest perimeter systems. AppVision software also manages building intercoms, HVAC and lighting automation in connection to supported control systems. Each control room is situated
onsite with automatic failover servers. All AppVision servers and client stations intercommunicate in real-time over a private IP network. This project sees the deployment of three AppVision product modules : alarm/incident management module, open access control module, CCTV smart wall module. A special feature was developed for this project enables AppVision to manage specific CCTV cameras in Virtual Guard Tour mode. This uses a preset configuration to move and display fixed and PTZ dome cameras to monitor the security of the prison guards as they make their rounds of the prison. I

Milestone presents awards to local partners at Dubai networking event Milestone Systems Middle East held a partner conference in Dubai at the beginning of May at the Mina A Salam Hotel. The company says the event proved to be the most successful so far with nearly 200 people attending. APCO global congress brings region’s safety practitioners together Major General Rashid Al Matrooshi, director general, Dubai Civil Defence will open the APCO Global Congress on 6 June 2011 in Dubai. His agency will then deliver a presentation called: 24/7: Enhancing civil protection through technology. The congress, to be held between June 6-8, will bring an array of new technology and training to Middle East public safety communications practitioners. To date, delegations from nine countries, including Australia, Cameroon, Canada, Jordan, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and United States, have registered to attend the inaugural event. Scientists develop rainbow polymers that could beat fraudsters Scientists from the University of Sheffield in the UK have developed pigment-free, intensely coloured polymer materials that could provide new anti-counterfeit devices on passports or banknotes due to their difficulty to copy. The polymers do not use pigments but instead exhibit intense colour due to their structure, similar to the way nature creates colour for beetle shells and butterfly wings. These colours were created by highly ordered polymer layers, which the researchers produced using block copoylmers (an alloy of two different polymers). By mixing block copolymers together, the researchers were able to create any colour in the rainbow from two non-coloured solutions. This type of polymer then automatically organises itself into a layered structure, causing optical effects similar to opals. The colour also changes depending on the viewing angle. This system has huge advantage in terms of cost, processing and colour selection compared to existing systems. The complexity of the chemistry involved in making the polymer means they are very difficult for fraudsters to copy, making them ideally suited for use on passports or banknotes.

Taya IT solves data issues for Dubai Police Dassault Systèmes subsidiary Exalead has signed an agreement with the Dubai Police through reseller Taya IT for a large data management contract. To aid in civil and criminal investigations, the Dubai Police maintain a large repository of critical data in an Oracle database system. At present, the continually growing repository includes approximately 35 million documents. To retrieve information from the system, police personnel were using the database’s built-in search utility. As the volume of data increased, the system began to experience serious performance issues. It could take the platform 30 to 45 minutes to process some queries. In addition, the search utility was rigid, returning only exact matches to precise user queries.
Dubai Police selected a solution proposed by Taya IT – Exalead CloudView integrated with Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) Support. Police staff can now retrieve data rapidly and easily. Results are returned in a less than a second, with CloudView’s fuzzy matching technology and auto-categorisation (clustering) of results boosting search success and staff efficiency. Moreover, by offloading routine information access requests from Oracle to CloudView, the agency is able to better manage its overall IT costs. “We can now analyse millions of heterogeneous records in near realtime, which was just absolutely impossible to do in the past,” said Major Amer Sharaf Dubai Police. Fast track to surveillance Hikvision’s 1.3 megapixel vandal-resistant dome cameras are being used at Nuremberg railway station in Germany. The new cameras are now allowing station management to protect travellers & provide them with context-sensitive information Nuremberg is the largest railway station in northern Bavaria and currently receives 130,000 passengers every weekday. As part of continuing improvements in customer care and heightened vigilance against terrorism, Deutsche Bahn AG has begun to transform its operational control centres and is upgrading camera surveillance from analogue to IP systems. These measures are part of information gathering at control hubs known as ‘3-S Centres’ where video streams, audio signals, telephone and radio messages are assessed so that appropriate action can be taken. Passengers communicate with the control centres using information/emergency columns on the station platforms at Nuremberg and the Hikvision cameras are positioned nearby so that officials can see high-quality images of the platforms and surrounding areas at resolution of up to 1280x960 pixels. Staff are able to make specific announcements to individual travellers including wheelchairusers, giving advice that is appropriate to their situation or difficulty. They can also discount frivolous activation of emergency buttons – perhaps by schoolchildren – with a simple evaluation of images. The Hikvision cameras have been installed as part of a turnkey emergency and logistical solution designed by the Munich-based systems house Indanet AG who work closely with Hikvision as a technology partner and specialise in the public transport and traffic

management sectors. These 1.3 megapixel cameras offer H.264/MPEG4 dual-stream real-time video compression with various frame rate options according to usage demands. Hikvision cameras support video management systems (VMS) from many major vendors. On this project the cameras are operating from the control centre management system developed by Indanet AG. It is based on their neXus control centre software which unifies disparate categories of data into a single, future-proof solution that makes costeffective and ‘green’ use of legacy equipment where appropriate. Disciplines can include CCTV, help points, passenger information, access control, fire prevention and track-to-train communication. The cameras use a 2.7~9mm (F1.2) lens and feature a 1⁄3" Sony progressive scan CCD. Minimum illumination is 0.1 lux at F1.2 or 0.01 lux at F1.2 in black and white mode. These dome units can be triggered by motion detection and if needed users can store data ‘at the edge’ on a 32-gigabyte SD/SDHC local card. There are local alarm inputs and outputs with audio compression achieved by the Ogg Vorbis format, a feature that was consistent with the open-protocol approach demanded by the end-user on this project. The cameras have an ingress protection rating of IP66 and the enclosures are providing protection against airborne contaminants including brake pad particles, which are a familiar problem at railway stations. Jurgen Fuchs, director of Strategic Projects at Indanet AG, said: “The Hikvision cameras are proving robust in a demanding environment and the price-to-performance ratio is impressive. At a major railway station with extensive subsystems there are many demands on bandwidth and RAID storage. The roll-out of video-friendly LAID based storage is also beginning to supersede older RAID technology. Santosh Muniswamappa, commercial head – IP Solutions for CBC (Europe)’s CCTV Division says that traditionally the industry has been dealing with RAID storage using random access recording techniques, however this architecture was never really designed with surveillance in mind. “What happens typically with RAID systems is that it writes across multiple hard drives at random. Half the data might be written on hard drive one, and half on hard drive two. All this jumping around generates heat and also means that disk space is not being used as efficiently as possible. There is also the need for hardware to keep track of what is on each hard disk.” An answer to these issues is likely, according to Muniswamappa, to come with the development of so-called LAID, a linear access approach to storage: “This should prevent issues with heat, vibration and noise. To achieve redundancy LAID writes the same data to a couple of disks rather than being spread across discs and any DVD hard drives can be used because the you are not wearing out the disks to the same extent.

The first months of 2011 saw significant geo-political change across the Middle East and North Africa. Initially peaceful demonstrations gathered momentum resulting in huge numbers of protestors demanding political, economic and social reform. The historical events brought the world’s media to the region and highlighted the latent desire for democratic reform to a global audience. While the uprisings resulted in regime change in Egypt and Tunisia, with Libya poised to follow, this came at a cost, and caused significant civil and economic disruption. Such unrest provides a timely reminder that conducting business in emerging or fragile markets requires thorough risk and crisis management plans to safeguard people, assets and reputation. Recent unrest also demonstrates just how quickly a seemingly isolated event can escalate, not just within one country but across a region. An act of protest by a street vendor in Tunisia triggered riots and ultimately a revolution, which in turn inspired protestors across the region within a matter of days. As we have witnessed, the transition from relative stability to
complete instability can occur with surprisingly speed. Companies must be acutely aware that once a situation reaches its tipping point, their ability to implement security and risk management solutions becomes limited. Companies with tried and tested risk management policies and procedures will be much better equipped to prevail in an emergency or crisis situation.
Evacuation procedures In the event of an emergency or crisis, a company’s priority will be to look after its people. If the situation escalates and an evacuation is required, the crisis plan should prioritise which staff need to be evacuated first and document the closest or safest point of evacuation as well as having a contingency evacuation point should the first choice be unavailable. It is also important to determine how you will manage staff that remain in the country, which could include core operational staff, local nationals or joint venture staff. Managing the evacuation of staff is a complex process and during a crisis it is critical that a company is clear on how the evacuation will be SECURITY MIDDLE EAST | MAY/JUNE 2011 |

managed and by whom. A smooth evacuation will often require the
support of third parties. Your plan may need to identify safe heavens and alternative routes out of the city or country should you be unable to get all staff to one evacuation point. The crisis plan needs to ensure there is a mechanism in place to quickly and effectively communicate with staff and their families to mobilise them quickly and keep them updated as the evacuation proceeds. In an emergency evacuation environment, staff will want to contact family and loved ones. It is critical that you have clear protocols around such communication, which may present logistical challenges or even compromise the evacuation. A crisis may result in isolation from banking and financial markets and general supply chains. It is important to be clear on who in your company can issue and process lump sum funds and quickly transport them to company executives should normal channels be closed. It is also vital that your organisation can deal with price surges for fuel and food as well as having alternate suppliers available should suppliers be unavailable. Planning also needs to extend to partners and clients, with key considerations including the likelihood of late payments and how this will affect your cash flow and the implications this might have on your supply chains. More generally, any crisis plan should consider how an inability to deliver and receive goods could affect the business and its finances. A crisis is not the time to be checking the extent of your company’s insurance cover and to find out that, for example, terrorism or political unrest are two different events, and can be classified separately by insurance companies. All corporations should be aware of what their policies cover and under what circumstances. A crisis will usually create significant interruptions to operations and challenges for those staff that remain in country. A sound crisis plan will include contingencies that allow the business to operate if staff are unable to get to the office or other operational facilities. This is often achieved through hot-desking or via a satellite office elsewhere in the region. For businesses that rely on face-to-face meetings, it is critical to ensure there are alternatives available. Depending on the nature of the event, a business may be unable to operate in any form for a period of time or be restricted to core activities undertaken by a skeleton local staff. In this situation, management needs to understand how long the company can operate under these conditions before calling Force Majeure. Understanding the consequences of closing operations is also critical. If, for example, a business effectively shuts down but competitors do not, a plan to retain contracts and clients will be an important component of any risk management strategy. Communications are vital for any modern business and during a crisis it is important that staff in particular are aware of who to contact in case of an emergency and how they will communicate if telephone networks and internet access is cut off or restricted. It is also important to build in the necessary communication redundancies into the crisis plan.

A crisis will also test communications with external stakeholders such as clients and even the media, making it important that an up to date crisis management plan is maintained and details who and when the company will communicate with external parties. Quick and decisive action can help the company gain control during a crisis situation but the corollary is that a crisis often impairs access to information and therefore management’s ability to make informed decisions. Identifying what information sources will be relied on in a crisis situation and being able to verify their accuracy is vital. Seeking out reputable sources on the ground to check the validity of media reports for example, is one way a company can make better informed decisions. Security should always be the top priority for any business operating in emerging or volatile markets. Careful planning needs to consider if offices or staff accommodation are in locations likely to be impacted by civil or political unrest, or criminal activity. Undertaking a risk assessment of offices and staff accommodation helps companies better plan for a crisis and helps staff comprehend the risks associated with where they live and work, so they can take appropriate measures to protect their safety both before and during a crisis. One critical component of securing the safety of staff is having a proactive security team that monitor local and regional events and provide regular guidance on evolving risks. While it is critical to have a plan in place, it is even more critical to ensure they are tried and tested, usually through regular audits and desktop exercises. The time to test the plan is not during an emergency or crisis. Given the complexity of operating in emerging and fragile markets, an increasing number of companies are engaging specialists, like Unity Resources Group, to help them develop and test their crisis plans. While it is impossible to plan for every eventuality, the most effective plans will: ■ Provide an effective and easy to use format that facilitates timely and well informed decision-making ■ Detail essential procedures in a clear and concise manner ■ Detail procedures for worst-case or complex scenarios; e.g. evacuations ■ Include a business continuity plan to get your business back to operations as soon as possible ■ Identify the areas of the plan where vulnerabilities exist and develop contingencies that are practical and can be implemented in a crisis. With careful planning and training it is possible to protect a company’s people, finances and operations during a crisis. WATCH AND LEARN Video Content Analysis (VCA) has been hailed as the answer to many a retailer’s security problems, but it seems that shop and mall owners are finding it more useful for sussing out their customers’ shopping habits than tackling theft and shrinkage. SME reports Given the number of producers entering the field of analytics in recent years, it is not surprising that the range of products and installation implications can, at first glance, be confusing to potential buyers. The rise in take-up of VCA was underlined in a survey conducted last year by the BSIA of its CCTV section members – many of whom are active in the Middle East region – with installers noting a 7% rise in take-up and manufacturers reporting a 4% increase. Perhaps of most interest was the fact that, in terms of sectors where VCA was used most frequently, it was retail which came out on top alongside transport. Peter Bilsted, sales director for MEIA and ANZ at Milestone Systems, which specialises in software for managing IP network-based video surveillance, is positive about VCA reporting a growing demand in the Middle East in tender specifications for airports, ports, government projects like city surveillance, retail and some hospitality projects. Alongside this expansion in take-up there has been a huge shift in expectations in terms of what can actually be achieved from video
analytics for retailers. According to Santosh Muniswamappa, commercial head, IP Solutions for CBC (Europe)’s CCTV Division VCA is no longer just utilised for dealing with stock shrinkage. Much more attention is now being placed on added-value marketing and commercial applications. “If you look from a camera’s perspective in a store the size of a typical object on a shelf is minuscule, and with the lighting conditions and glare coming from packaging on these products, there is difficulty in distinguishing separate items. So, rather than using analytics for stolen object detection – unless the object size is very large – now there is a concentration with VCA on footfall and queue management to provide marketing insights into how many people walk in and out of a store at different points in time, what aisles are occupied more than others, what is being sold and where, and whether preemptive action is needed if queues are above a certain level.” Chris Williams, director of Wavestore agrees that the scope of analytics in the retail environment extends way beyond the shop floor. element these involve everything from car parking through to the experience of people being in the store. We are now seeing VCA being rolled out that can identify people’s gender and age range. It is also important that retailers can handle the volume of customers in store – making sure there so there are enough people for instance on the checkouts or changing the way they use their doors to handle the volume of people. It is this dynamic response using VCA that, although it goes on unseen, is critical for retail management.” Williams adds that the software has become much more relevant to the retail environment. “I think that the software has got much smarter, it has evolved. It is one thing to talk about it from a theoretical perspective but to make VCA into something that can run commercially and deliver it so the shop owner can set it up is a big step forward. That consciousness that it needs to be usable not just a theoretical solution is critical.” Atul Rajput, a business development manager on the retail side at Axis Communications on retail believes that there is tremendous scope to deploy VCA: “With shopping centres for video analytics you now have capabilities like people counting, dwell time, heat mapping which can be used for merchandising operations and customer service. Rajput sounds an encouraging note about the future of VCA: “There is a new perspective on VCA and retail surveillance as a tool far beyond loss prevention. A key consideration is return on investment by using the same cameras. People counting is the most widely deployed analytics in our cameras and more advanced options, like heat mapping and dwell time, are also starting to take-off. Salim Idris, general manager for Dedicated Micros in the Middle East, however cautions that although VCA has improved significantly in recent years there are a number of issues when it comes to its implementation by retailers. “VCA is still a challenge as most features require constant changes to settings based on the actual environment in which they are implemented.” He stresses the need, for example, to

take care when it comes to where a camera is mounted to achieve accurate ‘people counting’ and setting up intrusion detection zones to avoid nuisance alarms. Instek Digital recently installed VCA as part of a 900-camera installation at the Dubai Festival City Shopping Mall. Benjamin Chen, regional sales manager says: “This key application for us has 900 cameras and hybrid surveillance systems with ‘object counting’, ‘object left’, ‘object removed’ and ‘intrusion’ implemented. This means that the customer knows how many people go into the mall, the peak hours and the areas which are most crowded and where there are any issues. ‘Object removed’ is being used in particular to protect luxury goods.” Of course one of the key issues with video surveillance of any type is being able to make sense of a high volume of data, not just as it happens but also to pull out meaningful information post event. Techniques now being rolled out which may be of interest to a wide spectrum of users including retailers include a sophisticated solution from CCTV storage systems manufacturer Visimetrics. FiND (Forensic investigation Network Database) which was launched recently at IFSEC 2011 in the UK, has been developed, following research by Loughborough University to search large volumes of CCTV recordings for ‘known’ objects of interest eg a ‘person wearing a red shirt’. It has, Visimetrics claim, the capability of linking to any CCTV recording system, using algorithms and meta-data, to create and index key objects of interest at the time of video capture and storage. Craig Howie, commercial director of Visimetrics says: “FiND has the potential to reduce the search period of days, weeks – or months – worth of digitally recorded video from down to a matter of seconds.” So it would appear to be a mixed picture for retail and VCA at least from a security perspective. Some vendors are reporting increased demand but it seems that the real potential of VCA, moving forward, is going to be its exploitation for commercial and marketing purposes – as an added value benefit of the CCTV infrastructure – rather than to deal with criminal behaviour. ■

The right credentials Has the access control market reached a tipping point? Asks Dr Tam Hulusi, senior vice president HID Global We often confuse the concept of identity with the card that carries it, but in reality, ‘identity’ can take many shapes, whether as a mobile phone, a USB stick, or some other medium. The move toward virtualised credentials is fuelling a shift in the industry, where the concept of ‘identity’ is being expanded beyond traditional ID cards to include many different form factors for credential. This new way of thinking marks a tipping point in the access-control industry, and is driving fundamental changes in how we deliver and manage secure identity. For instance, today’s mobile phones can do so much more than just making and receiving calls. They can now also be used to open doors, make cashless payments and access secure data. This is possible using near field communications (NFC) short-range wireless technology to receive and present virtualised credentials that we previously stored on contactless smart cards. NFC phones are one example of a new form factor for carrying a credential that can enable many types of contactless access-control applications and secure-payment or data-access transactions. Today’s new form factors for credentials, which includes a USB stick, fob and other devices in addition to mobile phones, improve user convenience and flexibility, while at the same time raising the question of how to ensure that all identities can be trusted. Three forms of authentication are typically used today: who you are (which is determined through visual, biometrics and/or role-based authentication); what you have (whether a badge, card or key, etc.); and what you know (ie, a PIN number for opening a door, or username or password for computer access). There also is an emerging, fourth dimension: ‘where you are.’ which can be validated through GPS technology in an NFC-enabled mobile phone used to house a credential. The concept of virtualised credentials raises many other questions. For instance, if a user’s identity resides on a mobile phone, how can one be sure that the device is trusted and secure? Or if a user loses a USB stick that houses his/her identity, how does one end-of-life that device while not affecting the user’s identity/credential residing on another device? Consider the complexity of one likely use case. First, a server sends an individual’s virtualised credentials over a wireless carrier’s connection to his or her mobile phone. This person’s virtualised credentials are then ‘presented’ at a facility entry point by holding the phone close to an IP-based access controller that is connected to another server. How can we know that the credential is valid? Both endpoints, plus all of the systems in between, must be able to trust each other. There needs to be a transparently managed chain of trust going all the way down the line. ■
HID Global’s Trusted Identity Platform (TIP) TIP is a framework for creating, delivering and managing secure identities in a virtualised credential environment. At the heart of the TIP framework is the ‘secure vault’, which serves known nodes within a published security policy. Data security, privacy and reliability are ensured in the TIP environment using symmetric-key cryptography, so that all nodes can execute trustworthy transactions. Once a ‘handshake’ is accomplished between the ‘secure vault’ and a node device, then the device is deemed to be ‘trusted’ in the network. Trusted devices must no longer communicate with the ‘vault’, and may operate independently. In this way, the transaction between nodes, such as a credential and a reader, is trusted and the resulting transaction, such as opening a door or logging onto a computer, can also be deemed trusted. Virtualised credentials are poised to enable a new era of more convenient and secure access and transactions. Moving into this new world will require a simple but protected, fully scalable and standardsbased identity system that can provision virtualised credentials anywhere in the world, to identity nodes ranging from traditional readers and cards to NFC-equipped mobile phones. ■ www.hidglobal.com

Some caveats regarding megapixel cameras by Milind Borkar, Vice President-Sales, India, Middle East and Africa Everybody seems to be looking at the benefits of megapixel cameras – and, there are many. However, there are some caveats you need to know about as well. Lighting: There are unique lighting issues related to megapixel cameras. For example, when it comes to obtaining full resolution for higher-rated megapixel cameras, without greater levels of lighting than what is naturally in a scene, the camera will not deliver optimum resolution. Beware of lux lighting levels; they usually refer to the light at the sensor, not the ambient lighting in any given scene. Frames Rates: Frame rate is an issue with megapixel cameras. Many of these cameras can only deliver 12-15 frames per second, insufficient for situations involving small, rapid movements such as dealers dealing cards at a casino table or money counting in the backroom at a bank. Monitors: There are diminishing returns when megapixel camera images are viewed on most monitors. Maximum resolution of the monitor is what you see from the cameras. So, with megapixel cameras, the higher resolutions look the same. The true benefit of higher megapixel resolution is in getting better forensic evidence through the use of digital zoom. Using digital zoom, the administrator can increase the resolution on the monitor. As long as dark pixels are being uncovered, adding more

information to the digital zoom will be beneficial. However, once there are no longer any more dark pixels and the administrator starts magnifying pixels, images become blurry. Bandwidth: Megapixel IP video is digital data. It takes up bandwidth so bandwidth management is essential in designing an IP video system. Most IP cameras have built in bandwidth management, though. There are typically three methods:

Image cropping: When viewing and recording a wide field-of-view, one often views and records much unwanted video, like the sky. Bandwidth management crops out the unwanted portions of the image which results in less bandwidth and more storage. Bandwidth throttle: The camera lets the user limit how much bandwidth will be used, eliminating too high of bandwidth use. Storage throttle: Similar to bandwidth throttle, the user determines how much storage the camera will use. In low activity areas, the camera can be directed to use less storage; in high activity areas, the camera is directed to use more storage.

undergo protection fitment under the expertise of AGT over the next few months. First established within the retail automotive sector, offering a solution to the increased level of ‘smash and grab’ vehicle crime through the retrofitting of its antishatter security film, AGT has begun to expand its expertise into architectural applications. With security films starting at a thickness of 50 microns up to 450 microns, the multi-laminate polyester membrane can be applied to any glass surface. It is bonded with an aggressive pressure sensitive adhesive system resulting in any broken glass adhering to the film.
AGT also offers installation with a range of specialist anchoring and edge retention systems for enhanced levels of protection, according to the client’s requirements. IFSEC 2011 highlights Biometric breakthroughs thanks to Lumidigm imaging techniques Lumidigm’s multispectral imaging sensor technology was being put to good use at IFSEC where it was demonstrated in two new biometric solutions. The Anviz OA1000 Series fingerprint terminals leverage Lumidigm’s multispectral imaging sensors to assure even fingerprints that are hard to read due to age, dirt, water, dryness and other problems can finally be read with confidence. “We are excited about our partnership with Lumidigm and believe their multispectral fingerprint sensors are an enabling technology that will allow us to further help our customers to confidently deploy biometrics,” says Michael Qiu, CEO of Anviz Biometric. Multispectral fingerprint sensors use a subsurface fingerprint to increase biometric performance and make applications more secure and reliable. That is because Lumidigm multispectral fingerprint sensors capture fingerprint data beneath the surface of the skin so that dryness or even damaged or worn fingers create no problems for reliable reads.
Using multiple wavelengths of light and advanced polarisation techniques to extract unique fingerprint characteristics from both the surface and subsurface of the skin, Lumidigm’s sensors provide results that are said to be more consistent, more inclusive and more tamper resistant than conventional biometric readers in all types of environments. As a result, Anviz biometric readers using Lumidigm sensors can scan through dirt, dust, high ambient light, water and even some latex gloves.
The OA1000 Series is a genuine breakthrough by Anviz in biometric identification terminals, which fully integrate fingerprint identification, RFID, camera, wireless, multimedia and embedded system technologies. The i-Evo team has kept the design of its biometric fingerprint readers simple, resulting in units that are small, require minimal training, are easy to install and cost less. They are aesthetically pleasing, easy to use, vandal-resistant and available in a range of colours. I

The NV-EC1701 Ethernet-overCoax (EoC) Transceiver is a compact media converter that allows 10/100 BaseT Ethernet and PoE power to be transmitted up to 5,000 ft (1,500 m), using new or existing coax cable. Transceivers may be linked together using BNC ‘T’ adaptors, forming a bus-architected network that supports up to four EoC transceivers and IP/megapixel cameras.
