e all love the idea of a country house retreat, but too many are old, draughty and lacking modern day home comforts. However Octagon, successful creator of family homes with all the right luxury touches, have now perfected the ultimate in country house living with their latest offering in exclusive Moor Park, close to the lovely old market town of Farnham in Surrey. Located on a generous plot of over an acre in the super league road Compton Way, the Octagon 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom home has plenty of entertaining space. A double height octagonal entrance hall with polished porcelain tiled floor elegantly partners the walnut and glass panelled staircase leading to the first floor galleried landing, where another impressive atrium space is bathed in natural light through an octagonal roof light.

Ground floor living space totals three reception rooms, ideally allocated as study, TV den and gracious drawing room with classical gas fired fireplace, where retracting sliding walnut doors access the formal dining area of the ‘amphitheatre’ sized living space incorporating kitchen, breakfast room, garden room, and extensive family sitting area. Sleek taupe lacquered kitchen units have contrasting stone worktops, and an extensive range of

built in Miele appliances, including built in espresso/cappuccino maker, and no less than three ovens, one a Gwyneth Paltrow favourite, being exclusively for steaming. A substantially sized utility room with gardener’s loo and glamorous marble guest WC Cloakroom complete the ground floor accommodation. Super wide foldback doors from the garden room tempt a step onto the paved rear terrace, and beautifully stocked gardens beyond. Upstairs, all bedrooms are comfortable doubles, three with en suite bathrooms, the Master excelling itself with a full marbleclad bathroom, walk in dressing room, a private sitting room and glass panelled balcony. In the forecourt sits a triple garage, and the property is securely gated with internal video link. Lanercost priced at £3m is available to view by appointment. Leap of Faith

G

raceful, mysterious and beautiful; the sculptures of artist Eleanor Cardozo are all of these things. As she says herself “An appreciation for beauty is simply a stirring of the soul…the soul is nurtured by beauty” and considers her figurative sculptures to be her greatest artistic challenge. Born in London in 1965, Eleanor is the second of a family of ten children, spending her early childhood in Africa and Malaysia. At just sixteen years old, Eleanor’s talent in strong line and form was noticed by her art master, who encouraged her to create her first sculpture, a portrait bust of the school priest. She classically trained in sculpture at The City and Guilds School of Art in London, whilst also studying portraiture in Florence at the Cecil Graves school. Eleanor is a former gymnast herself and her first hand knowledge of the discipline and physical skill required by the sport is evident in the fluid finesse of her artwork. She manages to depict the flow of the human form in sporting or gymnastic motion, captured in clay or bronze; a moment of motion frozen in time. As Eleanor says, ‘Beyond the beauty of the external form, there is something that cannot be named, something ineffable, some deep inner holy essence.’ In 2010, Eleanor exhibited a number of works at the invitation of Mohamed Al Fayed, then owner of the luxury department store Harrods. The exhibition was so popular that it had to be extended by a month to manage the crowds of visitors attracted to her work. During the London Olympics of 2012, Eleanor’s unique collection of gymnast sculptures were exhibited at several key points across London. In the iconic St. Margaret’s Church in Westminster Abbey, her three metre bronze sculpture Promise was shown. Visitors to the British Airways Lounge at Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport were greeted by Eleanor’s half-life-size bronze

ART Arched Gymnast, whereas Gatwick Airport played host to the Leap of Faith statue (which was also exhibited as part of the Heathrow Terminal 5 Expo Fine Art Gallery). Eleanor flew to America to f ind the Olympic rhythmic gymnasts to use as the live models for her sculptures and the finished works wonderfully embody the Olympic creed of united physical, spiritual and personal qualities. Eleanor dedicated the Promise sculpture to British rhythmic gymnast Frankie Jones; saying that the athlete’s “youth and talent embodies the Olympic spirit and the promise of a generation.” Eleanor’s work has also been shown at galleries and exhibitions around the world, including Abu Dhabi’s Doha Group Exhibition, at the Four Seasons in Geneva, at the Lausanne Palace in France, the Osborne Gallery in Knightsbridge, London and many others. In 2012 she became a Founder Ambassador for the Swiss watch company Bedat and Co. Each piece of artwork takes up to twelve weeks to create and Eleanor uses sketches, photographs and film footage as inspiration, as well as live models. She is involved in every step of the creative process, from the first conception of each piece right through to the final sanding and polishing. Renowned for the precision and delicacy of her work, Eleanor has been described by one of her collectors as “the greatest unexploited talent in the fine art world today”. She devotes much of her time to producing private portrait commissions and her firm belief is that “Artists have a duty within society to raise the quality of artistic skill and subject matter; to inspire and speak to our capacity for delight and wonder. The art of a nation reflects its society, which is why the role of the creative artist matters so much.”

Rockefeller Center

Christmas Time in New York City

I

f you're looking for a magical winter wonderland, complete with ice-skaters, holiday lights, music, decorations, ballet and two miles of illuminated Christmas trees, plus of course some great shopping, New York is the destination for you. Join the millions who gather in the city to celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, the winter solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year's Eve and to enjoy the City's stunning window displays, enchanting train shows, mesmerizing tree lightings 10

and heart-warming concerts. The transformation of the city into a glittering seasonal playground combined with the unique retail offerings means that it's a true shopper's paradise. There's plenty to see in the Big Apple at this festive time of year. Adorned with 30,000 lights and a Swarovski crystal star, the famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is one of the world's most beloved holiday images. Its history began during the

Great Depression - the first version of the tree included tin cans among its ornaments - and the sparkling branches reflect New Yorkers' famous optimism and determination as well as being a spectacular testament to the Christmas spirit. As well as the many different shows on Broadway, you might also want to catch the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes, or wander the frosty streets taking in the spectacular seasonal window dressings

and Christmas lights. Winter skating is one of the classic NYC experiences. You can strap on your skates at the iconic Rink at the Rockefeller Centre or join the outdoor skaters at the Wollman rink in Central Park. Warm up afterwards with a marshmallow-topped hot chocolate or one of the many varieties served up by the downtown City Bakery who run a month-long Hot Chocolate Festival at this time of year. If sports are your thing, then the City's lively sports bars are fun-filled places to watch college football bowl games, especially the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. Everyone knows that a great place to spend New Year's Eve is with the thousands of revellers in Times Square. The crowds, countdown and ball drop are part of what may be the world's most famous celebration. It'll be cold so be sure to bundle up and wear comfortable shoes as you'll be standing for hours! New York City hosts countless other celebrations to mark the passing of the old year and in with the new; from dance parties to rock concerts to late night yoga, there's something out there for everyone. And of course, there's the shopping. New York's five boroughs offer everything from couture collections to bargain apparel at stores often located

within a few blocks of one another. If you love shoes, head over to the world's largest shoe store at Macy's in Herald Square. Budding photographers can pick up a signature camera from the Lomography Gallery Store whilst technophiles should make a beeline for J&R Music and Computer World. Bloomingdales is one of the best known designer shopping outlets and there are a plethora of other lavish and luxurious department stores, downtown boutiques and vintage emporiums. Brooklyn's Winter Flea is one of the largest retail outlets for retro and vintage wear with a hundred or so vendors plying their wares in the bank vault and teller windows of the art-deco former Williamsburg Savings Bank. Children and adults alike will enjoy the transformation of the City That Never Sleeps into a magical winter wonderland. With the multitude of shops, entertainment and seasonal spectacles on offer, the only difficulty will be deciding what to do next. The Official Visitor Information Center (810 Seventh Avenue) offers access to free maps, brochures, discount coupons, MetroCards and sightseeing tours. Visit www.nycgo.com for more information.

Linda Mindel Carvell profiles the beautiful and talented Amanda Seyfried

A

s a hackette, I’ve met Amanda Seyfried briefly at Press Conferences for Mamma Mia! The Movie and Les Miserables and found her to be utterly enchanting. The pretty, 27-year-old blonde beauty exudes energy and is blessed with one of those smiles that seem so happy, that you smile back automatically. She’s a mere slip of girl, only five foot, two and a half inches tall, and tips the scales at just over 100 lb. She began her film career seven years ago, having been a successful model since she was 11-years-old. Amanda’s film debut was in Mean Streets, and leading roles soon followed in Letters to Juliet, Dear John, Gone, Red Riding Hood, Chloe and The Big Wedding. But Mamma Mia! was her breakthrough role; and she went on to win awards as Cossette in Les Miserables. Even though she constantly tops those lists of Hollywood’s Hottest New Stars, Most Glamorous Women of the Year, etc. the talented actress is very grounded, and knows she’s not there yet. Yes, her coloratura-soprano voice is fabulous, as is her beauty and charm, but she’s still waiting for the film that will zoom her into the ranks of great Hollywood stars. Perhaps that is why she still suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, and has a taxidermy collection on her walls of a moose, foal, owl and fox. Looking at her, with all her enjoyment of life, I cannot imagine why on earth she’d want to go home to stuffed animals!

Her current squeeze is actor Justin Ford, but she says she has no plans to marry and is still looking for the right one. Over the decade, she’s stepped out with Ryan Phillippe, Micah Alberti, Jesse Marchant and Dominic Cooper. It was Dominic, her co-star in Mamma Mia! that Amanda credits with having the biggest influence on her career. But their relationship ended, and she now says she’s devoted to Finn, her tancoloured Australian shepherd dog. Fans of Amanda’s wholesome screen image are in for a surprise when they see her in the star role of raunchy, vulnerable Linda Lovelace in the film Lovelace, about the infamous ‘70s porn star, that’s on release. It’s too soon to tell if Lovelace will be a game-changer for her. But if it doesn’t happen for Amanda this year, it can’t be far away. She’s been a hit in two leading roles, in two blockbuster films, both earning about $150 million bucks. She is a talented actress and singer, and a joy to see on the silver screen. She’s currently filming Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In the West, with Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson and Neil Patrick Harris, for release next June. Movie goers and the media adore her. So come on Hollywood, get your skates on, and find her the starring role, in the right film, that will take her to Tinsel Town’s top table.

WINTER WEDDINGS

F

Winter Weddings

ar from being the months of hibernation and wedding planning, winter is growing ever more popular for brides as the time of year to tie the knot. Not only can it work out cheaper, but incorporating your wedding day with Christmas celebrations can add an extra festive and glittering touch to events. Not only that, but the bride also gets to dress like a snow queen, snuggling up in fur (faux is fine) and diamonds. Winter is traditionally a quieter time of year for hotels and reception venues, that are otherwise filled with weddings in June. So you might find that the cost of hiring them is lower. However, don't forget that office Christmas parties start from November, so make sure you still book ahead. Another advantage is that you might be able to save on decorations as churches and venues will already be dressed for Christmas, leaving you to add just a few finishing touches. Wherever you decide to hold your winter reception, do make sure you take a look at it during the winter, particularly if the last time you were there was for a summer event. It may look very different in winter. If you have more than a year to go before your wedding, see how the venue decorates itself for Christmas, their choice in decoration and colour scheme may not be the same as yours. A marquee is still an option in winter as it can be carpeted and heated. There are many different ways to warm up your guests as they arrive at the reception and get them in the festive mood. Welcome them with hot chocolate, mulled wine, or warm punch, and let them soak up the smell of cinnamon, scented candles and Christmas trees. Your colour scheme can be the deep Christmas shades of reds, greens and golds, or the lighter touch of lush creams, buttery whites, lavenders and

apple greens. Of course there is nothing more apt for a winter wedding than traditional white, but you might want to incorporate some colour (even ice blue or pink) to lift it. For a truly fabulous winter decoration why not have an ice sculpture, either as a centre-piece or an interesting alternative table decoration. The sculptures can either encase flowers, like a single red rose, have the names of the bride and groom engraved on them, or act as a vase or candle holder. Why not have one in the shape of a wedding cake? They last between six to eight hours, and the supplier should normally take care of set-up and drainage.

Hair Mekanix HAIR, NAILS AND BEAUTY

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could arrive at your winter wedding in a flurry of snow? Short of getting married in a country that guarantees snow, this may or may not be a reality. However, you could explore the idea of hiring a snow machine, from companies like those that deal in film or TV special effects. But you should consult your venue first and be prepared for extensive clean-up costs afterwards! Last, but definitely not least, you need to dress the part. Ice blue, blush, sage green, lilac and chocolate brown are all fashionable alternatives to white for winter weddings this year. Obviously the bride will need to make sure she keeps warm, so go for something like a fur collared cape or hood, a feathered poncho, a wrap or stole, or a pashmina. If you don't want to stray from traditional white for your dress, this outer garment could be in a contrasting colour like fuchsia, sage or blue. Diamante fastenings will also add a sparkling, ice-like effect to any shawl or cape. Red also has an unforgettable impact, and there is nothing wrong with wearing a scarlet dress, which looks great on brides with dark skin and hair, or even a long red cape over a white or red dress. For a completely different look how about a short faux-fur jacket and matching hat instead of veil and headdress, with a large muff. However you decide to dress up or theme your winter wedding the permutations are really endless, and the time of year is perfect as it lends itself to festivity, glitter, sparkle, magic and bonhomie. The more you research your options, the more you will find that winter is a very appealing time of the year to get married, and is in many ways preferable to a rained-off summer.

he House of Pommery is one of the most prestigious names in Champagne. A name that is synonymous with elegance and finesse, with freshness and vivacity. Pommery & Greno was established in 1836, but it was the highly entrepreneurial Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery, who in 1858 took over the running of the business after the unexpected death of her husband, who made sure the Pommery name and reputation was internationally recognised.Madame Pommery selected a specific site to create the Pommery Estate. The Pommery cellars are some of the most impressive in the region - a series of 120 ancient Roman chalk pits. These 2000-year-old excavations are 30m deep and linked together with an 18km network of tunnels. They keep the bottles of Pommery champagne at a steady 10ºC all year round. The building itself was also to be the very image of modernity and style. The extravagance of the Pommery Estate, an Elizabethan-neo-gothic style castle in the heart of the city of Reims, attracts more than 120,000 visitors a year from all over the world. Madame Pommery launched the first commercially successful 'Brut' Champagne in history - Pommery Brut Nature 1874, at a time when champagne was excessively sweetened with sugar. Today, Pommery Brut Royal NV is the signature Champagne in the range. This excellent Champagne is approximately an equal blend of all three Champagne grape varieties - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier - which are sourced from 40 selected crus in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims. For more information visit www.vrankenpommery.co.uk or follow us at www.facebook.com/Pommery_UK www.twitter.com/@Pommery_UK Pommery Brut Royal NV in limited edition gift tin is available at Sainsbury's, Justerini & Brooks or buy online at www.vrankenpommery.co.uk

lose to London but kissing the countryside, packed with intriguing boutique shops, character pubs and eating places - Esher is a Surrey town that has it all. Add to this a famous racecourse, excellent transport links and numerous famous attractions right on the doorstep and it is not surprising that Esher is a popular destination for shoppers, cinema goers, and those wanting a good night out. With roots stretching far into the past, lay within the Saxon administrative district of Elmbridge Hundred. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Aissela and Aissele where its assets are listed as fourteen hides; six ploughs and two acres of meadow. Bounded by four wooded commons and the River Mole, Esher has a long history of association with the royal family through the mansion at Claremont close to the present day town. A house had been built on the site in the 11th century but was demolished by the Bishop of Winchester, William Wayneflete in the 15th century to make way for a new brick built residence. Henry VIII acquired Esher (Asher) manor from the bishop and the manor lands were included in Henry's extensive deer park surrounding nearby Hampton Court. The manor was restored to the Bishop of Winchester in Queen Mary's reign and then in 1583 Queen Elizabeth bought it back 28

and presented it to Lord Howard of Effingham. Following various upheavals on the continent, Esher became a centre for French royalty in exile. Louis Philippe, the last king of France, came to Esher with his queen and other family members and died at Claremont in 1850. Esher grew as a stagecoach stop on the London to Portsmouth road, later designated the A3 road, and then bypassed in the mid 1970s. With the coming of the railway in 1836, Esher prospered and expanded. Sandown Park racecourse was laid out on part of the Sandown Farm in 1875 and is now one of the finest race courses in the South East and also a popular venue for musical entertainment, antiques and collectors fairs, and corporate events.. As many large estates were broken up and sold to developers to provide new homes for City workers, Esher became firmly established as part of the stockbroker belt. George Harrison of the Beatles had a house in Esher in the 1960s and the other Beatles were regular visitors to the house and the recording studio George had there. Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees also owned a house in Esher where the hit single Juliet was written and recorded by Maurice and Robin Gibb for Robin's solo album in the 1980s.

Retailers and coffee shops have reported roaring trade in Guildford, while John Lewis has identified the town as a location where it would desperately like to open a department store. Shops in Guildford include House of Fraser, Hugo Boss, and Armani. The Experian survey, which excluded central London, ranked Guildford ahead of Kingston upon Thames, Tunbridge Wells, Reading and Harrogate. It found Guildford attracted an annual retail spend of £900m, with 6,878 households with incomes of between £100,000 and £150,000.

Fireplace by Burning Desires

Fireplaces A

s the chillier winter nights draw in, spending an evening snuggled around the hearth offers the ultimate riposte to the winter blues. Whilst a fitted traditional fireplace can elevate the value of a house by up to ÂŁ10,000, this isn't a practical choice for everyone. However, the wealth of fireplace options available offers scope for functionality and style whatever your heating preferences. Cambridge-based Anglia Fireplaces invites us to rekindle our love affair with the hearth this winter, by offering its expert advice on choosing your dream fireplace. Whilst it is true that wood-burning open fires require more maintenance than other styles, the tangible warmth and ambience of an open flame is difficult to surpass. However, whilst open fires are an indulgent and timeless feature for the right homeowner, they are not particularly heat efficient. Wood-burning stoves are now available in a huge range of styles and finishes. They can also transmit up to 95% of heat directly into the room along with their cosy glow.

Pellet stoves that burn wooden pellets offer astonishing easeof-use and as long as the hopper is topped up, they will provide a steady heat all day long. The eco-friendly fireplace ranges boast up to 90% efficiency and a 10kg bag of pellets costing in the region of ÂŁ2.60 can last 8 hours. Gas fires have come a long way from the institutional feel of 1980's units. Offering an instant heat and ease of use, ultramodern designs are an ideal compromise for time-strapped city dwellers. Those lucky enough to live in period properties but who suffer from the cold at night may need a fireplace capable of powerful heat, whilst apartments and terraced houses may opt for a fire with a stronger stylistic appeal. It is best to see a fire in-situ before purchasing, and our top Surrey Fireplace shops have a greater choice of products than ever before and offer full installation and expert advice. The fireplace is sure to be a focal point but it need not dominate or determine what colours you use in your dĂŠcor or furnishings this season.

n style terms, this year it doesn't matter whether your taste is for modern or traditional in your bathroom, it's all about individuality. And when choosing your bathroom style, you can have an ultra-modern bathroom in a period home, as well as the reverse. But whatever your taste, there are certain areas that you need to consider in order to get it right. Make sure you make it saleable. Obviously, if you're redoing your bathroom, you're probably not planning to move immediately! But do keep in mind that life plans change. And when you come to move, you don't really want to have to redo your bathroom again to make your home saleable. So go for something that is generally considered fairly 'normal' and also will not date too badly. For example, a white suite has a classic look that won't date, and provides a clean, neutral backdrop for tiles, lighting and paint colours, all of which can be changed relatively easily if you or future buyers want to do so. Also bear in mind that although you may not use a bath regularly, any family with children who might consider buying it will need one. So it's best to have one if you can possibly fit it in, especially in the main or family bathroom, although en suites are a bit more flexible. Be prepared to pay more for quality - your bathroom is going to get a lot of use. Considering the amount of time you spend in it over the years, and the amount of wear and tear it gets, it's well worth paying a bit more to get good quality furniture, fixtures and fittings. They will last much longer, 46

and won't get tatty, break or need replacing nearly so soon. Make sure you involve an expert. Even if you're planning on installing your own bathroom, it pays to go and talk to someone who really knows what they're doing. The KBSA (www.ksba.org.uk) is a membership organisation dedicated to upholding standards of excellence throughout the interiors industry and to protecting the consumer. It has more than 400 retail members throughout the UK, and they can provide practical help and advice. They'll have access to goods and styles that you may not be aware of, and if you use them to design and install your bathroom, you'll also have confidence that you're fully covered through the KSBA's ConsumerCare deposit protection and Consumer Care Plus insurance scheme. The KSBA recommend that you visit a showroom in advance to look at designs and styles, and state that you will almost certainly have to pay a deposit of up to 25%, as well as an interim payment, so do be aware of that. For your peace of mind, ask to talk to previous customers and even visit their homes to have a look if you can, before putting any money down or signing anything. Decide on your dream and what you can't live without. Before you start planning, think about your dream bathroom, and also what you really can't manage without. Two basins are high on many people's wish list. But is a bath essential, or could you manage with just a shower? That would mean more space for a bigger shower enclosure, perhaps even a

walk-in shower with high quality showerhead, jets and the like, for a really luxurious 'boutique hotel' feel to your bathroom. If you do want a bath, a freestanding bath can really add a 'wow' factor, or you could choose a 'spa' bath with jets and central showers for a bit of home pampering. Alternatively, a smaller bath will mean you use less water, which may be important to the environmentallyconscious. Be aware of the best use of space. If you have the luxury of a large bathroom, then obviously you have more room to play with. But even so, space most bathrooms have constraints, so you need to think about how to maximise and make best use of the space available to you. There are several ingenious ways to do this. There are plenty of smaller-sized and space-saving items of bathroom furniture on the market, such as wallhung WCs, corner basins and corner cupboards. A good bathroom designer will be able to help you decide on which are appropriate for you. Fitted furniture is also a good way to hide pipes, and wall cupboards save on floor space. A wet room can also be a good way to make a space seem bigger, as there are no shower doors to take up space, and they have the added bonus of being very easy to clean. However, waterproofing a whole room has its own challenges, so you really need to take professional advice on this one. A good alternative to a wet room is a walk-in shower or wet area. It also has the effect of making the room look bigger, and since the shower tray tends to be low profile, and therefore easier to access, it can prove a better longterm investment than a shower over a bath. And for small spaces, a bifold shower door that opens inwards means that there's no shower door protruding into your bathroom space. Don't forget storage. If you've spent any time in hotels, you'll probably already know that one of the most irritating features of a poorly-designed bathroom is lack of storage, including shelves. So build that into your thinking. You don't want your beautiful new bathroom instantly filled with unsightly clutter, so make sure that you include plenty of cupboards, such as a cupboard under the basin, or one for towels, as well as shelves within easy reach of the bath or shower for bottles of shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath. A full height corner cupboard can be a great option for bathroom storage, as you'll have space for towels, new

bottles of bath products, and any bath toys that you'd rather store out of sight. So what about heating? You're going to need heating in your bathroom, and if you're redoing the whole room, you could think about underfloor heating. It saves on space for radiators, and is very energy-efficient, as it warms the room from below, and, as we all know, hot air rises. However, you'll probably still want a heated towel rail to dry your towels, especially in winter. Lighting is also vital in a bathroom, and can be an area of

conflict too. You want bright lights and a good mirror so you can see to put on your make up or shave, but you want to be able to make the room a bit more atmospheric when you're having a relaxing bath. Some designers insist on two lighting circuits in a bathroom, one of which goes on and off automatically when you enter or leave the room. This can be particularly useful if you have children who forget to turn off the lights (or little ones who delight in yanking on light cords!). Halogen spots can also be great, especially around the mirror

area, if your bathroom is a bit dark; often an issue in a flat in a conversion, or in an older house. And while you're thinking about mirrors, get the largest you can afford, and make sure it's fog-free or heated. This will save years of wrangling about who turned on the shower just as the other needed to use the mirror. So, with all the functional areas considered - space, storage, lighting, heating - what about impact? You want your bathroom to have a 'wow' factor, but how do you create it without going over the top? This year's trend is towards earthy, natural colours, and textured and natural surfaces. And earthy and natural doesn't have to mean neutral and dull. Think Tuscany, with its glorious range of browns and reds, or the ever-changing blue-grey of the sea and the different greys of the pebbles on the shore. Out go gloss finishes, and in come silk and satin, which are much softer to look at. And stone or marble tiles make a fabulous floor finish, and are especially good if you have underfloor heating. In any bathroom, you're probably best off keeping the 'impact' piece or colour relatively small. If you've opted for a white suite, then choose brightly coloured tiles in

Tiles should generally be large, rather than small, or absolutely tiny, used to create a mosaic effect. If your budget is tight, splash out on accessories such as

fabulous taps, or bright tiles around the mirror, rather than an expensive suite. Beautiful accessories will act as a focal point, and bring the bathroom together. ooking for a really good Sunday lunch? Indulge in that wonderful British tradition in beautiful country surroundings at The Brasserie at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot. As well as delicious food in a relaxed and stylish restaurant, you will also be entertained every Sunday by the enthusiastic and talented Jubilee Jazz Trio (as seen on television) while you enjoy your lunch. Although it is a five-star hotel, the Brasserie Restaurant is the perfect place for families or couples to enjoy a meal in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Diners range from small family groups and couples enjoying a lazy Sunday to larger groups and extended families enjoying a celebratory lunch. The food is buffet style with the emphasis on five star quality. Head Chef Ram Jalasutram, who has previously worked with London restaurants including Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Gordon Ramsay in London and Raymond Blanc, has crafted a menu that is a feast of modern British cuisine, using quality ingredients sourced from the British Isles such as beef, lamb, salmon and garden vegetables. Starters include a fantastic seafood medley, with king prawns, mussels, prawn cocktail and smoked salmon; so much food, in fact, that this could have done for the main course. There were also lovely traditional hors d'oeuvre such as asparagus and hens eggs as well as a charcuterie selection. But of course, most diners are here for the traditional Sunday roast. There’s a choice of Roast beef with Yorkshire puddings, roast pork with apple sauce, roast Lamb with mint sauce, and, for those eager for Christmas, roast turkey with cranberry and bread sauces. Each dish is accompanied by a choice of traditional Sunday roast vegetables, including golden roast potatoes, chunky carrots and fresh beans, cauliflower au gratin and broccoli. The menu changes each week as more seasonal produce becomes available and there is a fish dish and a vegetarian option for those who want something a little different to the traditional Sunday roast. For those who still had room, the sweets included cinnamon and apple crumble with custard, pear and praline tart, chocolate mousse top with grated almonds and a delicious selection of British and Continental cheeses. Of course, as you might expect from a renowned five star hotel, there was a comprehensive quality wine list to meet all tastes. Our Sunday Best was absolutely mouth-watering and all for only £37 per head (children in highchairs eat for free). Be sure to pre-book to avoid disappointment as the Brasserie Sunday lunch, served from 1pm to 3pm, is very popular. Simply call 01276 471774. Ockenden

Manor Hotel & Spa

I

f you're looking for a place to really relax and enjoy some wonderful treatments in a sumptuous new spa, then Ockenden Manor Hotel and Spa is the place for you. Situated in some of the most beautiful countryside of the South Downs, in the pretty village of Cuckfield, Ockenden Manor Hotel is just the place for a special weekend away. A classic Elizabethan manor house, the hotel has twenty two individually decorated, deluxe suites set in nine acres of glorious grounds. To complete the luxurious experience, the hotel also features a Michelin starred restaurant and its crowning glory, the Ockenden Manor Spa.

The most extensive Spa in the South East, the new building opened in January 2012 and recently won Conde Nast Johansens’ 2013 UK and Ireland Award for Most Excellent Hotel Spa. It is cleverly designed to meld cool, contemporary architecture with the traditional settings of the 19th Century walled garden in which it is located. The design brings the outside into the interior, with a swimming pool that allows guest to swim from indoors to outdoors through a door in the glass wall. Remarkably, the hotel’s own underground spring supplies all the water for the pool, the outdoor hot tub, indoor spa bath and a walk-through rain shower. Outside, the

open fire pit and sundeck are the perfect place to relax with a snack from the spa lounge or perhaps enjoy a glass of the local sparkling wine, Ridgeview Estate. All six of the large rooftop spa suites overlook the beautiful landscape of the South Downs and their French doors open onto a large terrace garden. The Spa has a variety of treatments using completely natural products by Ila, REN and Electric Body, including the Ila’s Kundalini Back Massage, utilising an exquisite blend of essential oils with ancient massage techniques and chakra healing. The Ila Rainforest Rejuvenation Facial uses a unique blend of Amazonian plant extracts sourced especially for Ila by the indigenous Kayapu Tribe. For something a little different, why not try the isopod flotation tank, where you are suspended in saltwater and allow all your stress to slip away in this silent sanctuary? For those looking for something a little more energetic, the gymnasium is equipped with all the latest cardiovascular and resistance machines, as well as free weights, with the Fitness Studio offering yoga and pilates classes. Why not treat yourself and a friend to the Ultimate Spa Experience package, which includes five hours of luxury treatments, a breakfast smoothie, lunch, homemade scones, tea and coffee and a glass of Ridgeview

Estate sparkling wine? After your beauty treatments, it seems fitting to round off a perfect day with a visit to the Hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Under the eye of Head Chef Stephen Crane, Ockenden Manor has established a reputation for delicious, locally sourced food which cleverly mixes innovation and tradition. Guests can choose from a fixed price menu or go all out for the gastronomic seven course tasting menu. Dishes include starters Sauté Foie Gras with Onion Tarte Tatin, Grapes, Sauce Verjus and Hand Dived Scallops with Mushroom Purée, Smoked Bacon, Sweet Onions, Confit Garlic and Crisps - this dish was utterly divine. The main course of South Downs lamb, Saddle, Sweetbread, Breast and Falafel was very tender and had excellent flavour. Vegetarians are not forgotten, with an extensive selection of vegetable side dishes and mains. The restaurant also has an inspired wine list to perfectly complement the menu. There is also the option to book a private dining experience in the beautiful oak-panelled Burrell Suite, which seats up to forty guests who can delight in the ambience of the stained glass windows and painted ceiling as they enjoy their meal. If you fancy exploring further afield, the local towns of Glyndebourne and Lewes are magnets for antique and craft lovers. Some of the UK’s best known vineyards are located nearby, as well as many beautiful National Trust properties and other gardens, not to mention the lively metropolis of Brighton with its Regency pavilion and famous seaside attractions. WINE COMPETITION

Château La Calisse Rosé 2012

L

ocated in the South-East of France, Provence is a rich, beautiful region strewn with vineyards from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of the Alps, from the dramatic landscape around Aix-enProvence to Nice’s Riviera. This diverse mosaic of terroirs and climates lends the wines from each of Provence’s wine-growing areas a distinct sense of personality and place. Provence is famed for its dry, delicate pale pink rosés, and has a rich viticultural tradition which stretches back to 600BC when the Greeks first planted vines in the hills surrounding Marseilles. Provence is proud to be synonymous with rosé, and in this part of the world rosé is drunk at all occasions. The chameleon of the wine world, Provence rosé is perhaps the most versatile wine to drink with food, pairing beautifully with almost any dish. It has the vibrancy, depth and flavour to enhance the fresh flavours of salads and fish dishes, or set off spicy Asian curries and traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Like red wines, rosés are made from red grapes. But whereas red

wines are made by allowing the juice and skins to commingle during fermentation, rosé producers allow only a limited period of skin contact before separating the pink-tinted juice from the grape skins and then beginning fermentation. The pigment and tannins in the skins give the dry rosé its distinctive colour, aroma, and character. Provençal winemakers make rosé by producing single-variety rosés in individual vats, and the final wine is carefully blended from these batches. Château La Calisse Rosé 2012 is produced in the Coteaux Varois en Provence appellation, and is a classic example of the elegant style of rosé for which this region is famous. Made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache, this expressive, characterful wine balances ripe raspberry and strawberry flavours with fresh acidity and a silky finish. It is an incredibly versatile wine to enjoy with food, and will show its true colours when paired with traditional Mediterranean dishes or Asian cuisine. Drink it with a spicy Thai green prawn curry for an elegant combination, or enjoy it as a refreshing aperitif or lunch time tipple. www.chateau-la-calisse.fr

Olly Murs O

ne of the most successful pop stars of the last decade, Olly Murs follows up his two doubleplatinum albums, three Number 1 singles and a recent sell-out headline arena tour with his most recent album Right Place Right Time, released in December 2012. As Olly says, “Right Place Right Time as a title sums up my career to this point. I’ve worked hard in everything I’ve done, doing what’s felt right, and everything has fit into place. It’s the sentiment for this album – a body of work of great pop songs. And I’ve gone in a different place again this time.” Olly’s previous 2011 album In Case You Didn’t Know established him as a successful songwriter and is rapidly approaching triple-platinum sales. With the new album release, he is clearly at the top of his game for crafting devilishly catchy tunes with heartfelt lyrics. He began writing the new material in March 2013, bringing a more funk-based feel to his music. Olly commented “I don’t want to do the same style on every album…I’d always said I want to do a Motown album, but after a couple of songs I’ll go ‘Let’s change it up’.” The first single from the album was Troublemaker, the only song on the album to feature a guest, rapper Flo Rida. “I’m not a big fan of having collaborations for the sake of it,” Olly emphasises. “But Flo gives Troublemaker that extra 10%, the same as Rizzle Kicks did on Heart Skips A Beat. His flavour – both his rapping and his persona – fit the song so well. I agreed to guest on Flo’s album in return.” After release, Troublemaker hit the top spot on the charts for a second week, meaning Olly managed the rare feat of

being top of the albums and singles chart simultaneously. Other funky songs on the album include Hey You Beautiful and What A Buzz, whereas the anthemic Army Of Two and the haunting and passionate Dear Darling (one of three songs cowritten with Ed Drewett – the other two being The One and What a Buzz) reveal Olly’s ability to showcase different widely different types of song. As Olly says “It’s about writing to someone to tell them how I feel about losing someone, and the flipside of that is The One, which is being in a relationship with someone pushing you away because they’re going through a bad time. They’re not the kind of songs you’d expect me and Ed to write, as we’re bubbly characters, but we were able to open up to each other.” Olly’s first number one single Please Don’t Let Me go was a song about a girl who broke his heart, sufficiently so as to write about her again in the title track of In Case You Didn’t Know. Happily, the track Loud And Clear appears to show that Olly is ready to move on from the disappointment. As he says, “She wasn’t there when I needed her and I was really

cut up about it…but I’m still here, and Loud And Clear is about how I’m over her. I’ve always liked conversational songs, and this album has some classic Olly idioms in there. It’s still just me.” As well as being released in the UK, Right Time Right Place was also released in Europe and the US. Olly is no stranger to the States, having spent time there recently appearing on national TV shows such Jay Leno and Good Morning America to promote his work. He also toured with none other than One Direction, who he describes as “brilliant guys to be around and it gave me some great foundations to make it over there, though it’s still early days.” Olly is also known as one part of the television show The Xtra Factor’s formidable double act, alongside Caroline Flack. Inundated with offers of innumerable other TV presenting roles, Olly turned them down to focus on his third album. As its success can testify – Right Place Right Time shot to the top of the album charts immediately on its release, giving Olly the biggest week one sales by a male artist in 2012 – television’s loss is definitely music’s gain.
