No graduation after death! sPhoto: Mduduzi Mathebula. Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLPARK. – A red ‘tsunami’ in the form of Economic Freedom Fighters student (EFF) supporters together with students from other organisations shook the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on Monday demanding to see the Vice Chancellor Professor Irene Moutlane. The protest arose over the murder of two students last week, and pushed for security measures within and around the residential commune. All roads and access to VUT were closed tightly as students sang and danced at the main gate. SRC president and member of EFF - Troy Mathebula addressed students. Mathebula said the two female students who were brutally murdered brought the number of deaths up to approximately 14 within the space of 18 months: “These students were all murdered due to feeble security measures. People do as they please and access to the university is very easy.” He listed three of many demands compiled by the SRC as follows: The CCTV cameras at the main gate that
are not working need to be fixed, the access to and out of campus should be controlled and Bafoko Security Company and Zeni Security should be dismissed. Sedibeng Ster spoke to students who seemed angry about the escalation of student deaths: “We are going to fight till we get maximum security. We pay a student security levy so we are going to demand intensive security. We are here to study - not anything else. There is no graduation after death.” The management of the VUT led by Prof Moutlane responded as follows on the demands: “We wish to express our concern about the events leading to the student protest and the disruption of operations at the university on Monday. It is management’s view that the action by the SRC was uncalled for and unwarranted. Furthermore, management was prepared to receive a memorandum from the SRC president which he refused to hand over. Management wishes to put on record that the safety and security of our staff and students is of the utmost concern to this university.”

The following are some of the measures that management said they are rolling out: A CCTV project which includes: security cameras, turnstile, access control monitoring and surveillance of the premises. The current security company’s contract is monthly and will go on only until a new security company has been appointed. “Management is saddened by the deaths of two young female students . While we acknowledge their sad passing we, however, have to point out that this incident took place at an outside house where they were residing. This external house was not part of the university-accredited student accommodation. Please note that in the case of the latest deaths, the university has just learned that the suspect has been arrested. Once more the management, staff and students of the university wish to express their condolences to the parents and friends of the deceased.” At the time of going to print classes had not resumed at the university. mathebula.mduduzi@media24.com

Acccording to the ER24 spokesperson when their paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene, they found both wrecked bakkies in the middle of the single lane road. Stray bullet kills Lerato Moleboheng Chaha
SHARPEVILLE. - An employee at Flamingo Tavern Lerato Lovel Mokoena (30) was recently killed when a stray bullet came through a window, piercing her heart. The tragedy unfolded when Mokoena was sitting in the house with her boyfriend, Tumi Tsholo. Tsholo explained that after hearing shots outside, Mokoena stood up and said, “There are people shooting each other outside.” “A moment later she told me she had been shot. I immediately told her to stop playing, but she had really been shot. She sprawled on the ground and I put her head on a pillow. I went to go and
call for help outside, but it was too late. She had already passed away.” Tavern owner Mpho Monamuli, who was at the scene, said that he had tried to stop a fight that had broken out between a group of men claiming that another guy had spilled alcohol on them: “I told them that this was not a big issue and that they must sort it out and apologise to each other.” It is alleged that after he was slapped by a patron in the tavern, the suspect went to fetch a gun to shoot at the group of guys he had squabbled with. Monamuli said that, after hearing shots, he went to reprimand the suspect and told him that he should stop shooting, as he could hurt someone. “He ran off, but at this stage I did not know
that he had already killed a person. We are deeply saddened about what has happened because Lerato was part of the family. We would like to send our deepest condolences to her family.” Mokoena’s aunt Tlalane Mthimkhulu and younger sister Mpho Selloane said they were devastated by what had happened to their loved one. “Lerato was everything to me. She was like a mother to me. She raised me like a child and put me through school. I will always miss her,” her little sister said. Sharpeville Police spokesperson Captain Attie Loate confirms the incident, adding that the suspect was arrested and has appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court.” Mokoena was buried over the weekend. SEBOKENG. - Men and women of the cloth are known to be cool, calm and collected. This was not the situation at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, DM Robinson in Zone 11 on Sunday. Many church members were confused as they were met with locked gates when arriving to attend a service. The reason doing the rounds was that presiding Reverend Jacob Moledi was apparently running the church like a tuckshop, abusing his powers and enriching himself with the church’s money. “He abuses
Suspect sought in R30 000 theft VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vanderbijlpark SAPS is investigating the theft of a motor vehicle following an incident that happened on August 31. It is alleged that a suspect took a handbag, containing a Samsung S4 cell phone, cash, wedding rings, a Nikon camera, a Ladies Citizen Watch, ID, bank cards, medical card and a drivers licence. The suspect apparently broke the rear window of the vehicle and pulled down the seat to steal the handbag in the boot, containing all the stuff mentioned to the total value of R30 000. Anyone with information regarding the case is requested to contact the investigating officer in the case Detective Warrant Officer Du Plessis, on (016) 910- 9012 or 083 276 4408.
his powers and uses unholy words at the altar. He uses the church name to enrich himself,” said the members of the congregation. According to the church members who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, relevant channels were followed to resolve the situation to no avail as those in positions of authority to are siding with Moledi. The congregation, mostly made up of the church’s elders, then resorted to locking the church gates on Sunday, preventing the service from taking place and demanding that the reverend be moved somewhere else, since according to them, he does not comply with certain church policies. Police were deployed to the scene to intervene and a four-to-five hour meeting was conducted with the reverend and the church elders. The matter was resolved and both parties made peace for the sake of the gospel. At the time of going to print Moledi could not be reached for comment on the saga. mduduzi.mathebula@media24.com

They are not here to be killed NewsEdi t or Comment s
The protests by the students at VUT since Monday are uncalled for, yes it is indeed truly sad that the two students died but the hooliganism of burning tyres and stopping those that would like to attend classes is nonsense. This is a critical time when the students should be focusing on their studies as most will be writing their final exams soon, ex-
cept for the dunderheads that have not qualified of course. Yes, it is correct for them to show that they are worried about the lack of security at VUT but to totally disrupt classes is not the behaviour one would expect of ‘educated’ individuals. Police are investigating and we hear that a suspect has been arrested. Isn’t this enough to show the students that police and the management are serious about the murders? That the President of the SRC refused to hand over the memorandum of demands does not make sense. How does he expect the management to resolve their grievances if they do not know what they are? Unless he wanted
to incite the students into remonstrating. Education is the reason for success and it is a very important tool that they will need later in life. It should not be neglected. It is what will keep the wolves at bay and doing what is right regardless of the positions that they will occupy upon their completion of study. Education is something that they cannot lose and will not be taken away from them. So it will be a wise choice for them to get as much as they can. It is however also high time that the management of VUT take responsibility and make sure that the demands on the memorandum are met as I believe they are genuine. I was telling
my colleagues that for the years that I have worked at this publication there has at least been one murder case at the institution and this is not right. The students at the institution rightly point out that security needs to be tightened. These students, some of whom come from outside our borders have not come here to be maimed but educated. I do agree with them when they say: ‘There is no graduation after death.’ I believe that eventually those on ‘strike’ will come to their senses, return to class and stop wasting precious time. Community demand a flat rate Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - A locked gate confronted an approved march that was supposed to culminate in the handing over of a memorandum of grievances to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) recently. The representative of the office of the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) received and signed the memo through the bars of the locked gate. Members of the United Front, Vaal Community Forum and Numsa took to the streets to hand over the memorandum. The regional chairperson of the United Front - Sithembiso Ngemntu - warned the officials that the Vaal was sitting on a ticking time bomb. He said this was no empty vision, “We will do what we did in 1984. During the Vaal uprising, everything was brought to a standstill.” Ngemntu further said that their concerns were brought to the attention of local

CBD closure due to old pipes fixed Lazarus Dithagiso
VEREENIGING. - Despite losses by some business people in the central business district (CBD) during upgrading, development and installation of new infrastructural pipes at Union Road in Vereeniging everything is finally back to normal. Emfuleni Municipal Executive Mayor Gretha Hlongwane and Thokozane Boikhutso, head of the department of Bulk Sanitation, said it cost the construction project R47-million to develop and replace brand new pipes. The road was closed for the installation of the new pipes in August last year. This comes after the main pipe that passes the businesses burst. The resulting spill of sewage was running towards the taxi rank. This brought everything to a standstill.
Hlongwane and Boikhutso said they feel very relieved: “The building was about to fall due to the wetland. We appreciate all stakeholders for being so kind. “We did our best to avoid any fatalities.Bulk Sanitation is however sorry to have lost one worker during construction. “The previous pipes and/or electricity infrastructure was installed during the old regime. They were installed about 60 years ago. The current replaced pipes are 120 metres long.” Boikhutso said she feels happy that most of the work has been done: “This was not an easy job. Motorists and business people around here were very upset when we closed the road. It was done for a good cause for both the safety of workers and people in general.” lazarus.dithagiso@media24.com
bigger numbers. As part of their demands, they said all local municipalities officials should step down with immediate effect as they had failed the communities dismally. “All the rates and taxes accounts - commonly known as ‘Masakhane’ - should be scrapped and everyone should start paying a flat rate. The MBDC debt collectors for ELM should stop pressuring the community to pay for services. “Instead of evicting people, the government should provide better houses and land. The government should do something to stop job losses. Government should stop closing
factories. “We demand a 50% reduction from the salaries of the mayors, municipal managers and political employees. The government must install security and give learners healthy food at schools. An investigation should also be conducted on those unduly benefiting from social grants that are meant for the poor.” Mogakane has confirmed that he received and signed the memorandum to be submitted to the office of the Minister of CoGTA and ELM. He promised marchers they would receive a response within a specific period. lazarus.dithagiso@media24.com

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Vaal River Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VRCCI) CEO Ester Mogashane strongly lashed at companies that did not acknowledge the invitation of the business summit recently at the hotel of the Emerald Resort and Casino. The event was supported by the likes of Eskom, Rand Water and other prominent stakeholders, including politicians. “We need such business lectures in our region. This will give a clear indication how the business sector is liable these days,” said an attendee who saluted the initiative. Mogashane explained the main motive of the event: “The event is a platform from which key role-player from the public and private sec-
tor can discuss how to create and share business opportunities in the Vaal, which will also create the possibility for various stakeholders to network and identify specific investment opportunities.” Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for Local Economic Development Maipato Tsokolibane, a guest of honour, told the house during her speech that development is a key factor. The stakeholder networking session was attended by individuals and various groups, including government, state-owned enterprises, investors, public and private sectors and other institutions. Attendees were also given a chance to engage with the panel. mathebula.mduduzi@media24.com

Losing your job is a daunting and upsetting experience for almost everyone who comes across it. It is not always complete doom and gloom and can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. The key to making sure you survive retrenchment is being prepared, your attitude and the action you take as you are let off. Here are a few tips and pointers on how to make the best of a horrible situation.

Requirements: • Must have own reliable vehicle & valid license
When you are retrenched you are entitled to many different pay outs. These could come in the form of severance pay, extra days of leave, pension and UIF. Make sure you know exactly what you are owed by the company for the amount of time you worked there.
•
As soon as you are retrenched, make sure to register as a work seeker, in order to get the pay-out you are owed.
•
Evaluate your finances and draw up a priority list and work out what you can spend money on. Rent and food are obviously two items that need to be budgeted for whereas any big spending plans, like a holiday, need to be put on hold.
•
If you have any debt, speak to your credit providers and negotiate new terms on your payments so that you don’t fall behind.
•
Contact a financial advisor, they will be able to assist you in ensuring that you have enough money until you find another way to bring in an income.
•
Unemployment Insurance Fund - The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is there to help you in the event you have lost your job. You can only apply for UIF if you have been paying towards it, i.e. 1% of your monthly salary.
2.
Attitude is everything!
•
Keep all negative feelings at bay and be positive about what the future may hold for you. Under South African law, there must be a valid economic, technical or structural reason to let people go, this may mean that retrenchment is not always a reflection on you and your work ethic.
•
Research how to excel in an interview. Never blame or criticise your current or old company as this will immediately put you in a negative light and you will not be considered as a viable candidate.

Shaka’s Trail unveiled VANDERBIJLPARK. - A brand new mountain bike track, called Shaka’s Trail has recently been unveiled at Phoenix Park in SE 2 byEmfuleni Local Municipality MMC of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Library Information Services, Parks and Cemeteries Shaka Radebe. An innovative new concept, an outdoor gym, that is free for all residents to use has also been launched. An Outdoor Gym is a set of gym equipment designed, built and installed outdoors. It’s a new way to look at health and fitness, and include much of the same equipment found in an indoor gym, but the difference is outdoor gyms are specifically designed for outdoor use. Outdoor gyms, are suitable for adults of all ages and fitness levels, and you don’t need any experience to

use them. The developments at the park has been the source of a lot of speculation amongst the community living in the area. A time trial was staged as part of the official opening of the park. The event was well supported by a lot of keen cyclists, despite the inclement weather on the day. During the opening Councillor Phillip Nothnagel congratulated and thanked Braam Smit for all his hard work and dedication. It it wasn’t for Braam this park would still have been just another neglected area in our town. He also thanked all the other sponsors of the project. He conveyed a special word of appreciation to MMC Radebe for his enthusiastic support and his commitment on behalf of ELM to provide the ground on a long term basis to be used as a cycle and trim park facility. Without Radebe’s support this development would not have been possible. According to Phillip the new Fitness Park at Shaka’s Trail is an example of how the DA is continually moving fitness forward to create a better way of life for our families. He invites all citizens to come and exercise in the sun, get back to nature and get fit, all in the leafy environs of our beautiful South African outdoors. The sponsors who made this project possible are Mooivaal Media (Official media sponsor), Emfuleni Municipality represented by MMC Shaka Radebe, Braam Smit, Metro Cycles, Elonei vulstasie (Frikkie Meyer blvd), Annelizè Smith Makelaars, Fastway Couriers, Professor van der Elst, Councillor Phillip Nothnagel, Fit Quip Outdoor Gym Equipment, Just Water, Vaal Turbo Industrial Park and Spur.

SEDIBENG. - In a twist to the event Juventus FC clinched a place in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Play-Offs by beating JK Eleven 32 - 0 in the Super League’s Stream A over the weekend. As if this is not enough, Pekwa All Stars FC also beat Makgale FC 26-1 in another Stream A Super League match on the same day. Both teams came into these games at the loggerhead with 36 points, from 15 games, 11 wins, 3 draws. However, separated by goal differences, Juventus FC scored a greater number of goals over the weekend. But these shocking scores have since made many local soccer fans and officials suspicious of ‘fault’ play. As things stand, the play-offs of the Emfuleni Local Football Association, which were scheduled to take place over the weekend, have since been postponed. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the ELFA general secretary Martin Mpholo. Sedibeng Sters Sport received calls from soccer fans and some concerned coaches regarding the high scores over the weekend: “Our football is going to the dogs if the Association allows this to happen. There is no way a team can score such a number of goals in one game. Somebody must be held accountable for this. As I’m talking to you I’m watching the game and I can’t believe what I see here,” said a club official who attended one of these two games. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by ELFA general secretary Martin Mpholo. According to Mpholo, there is no way the play-offs can take place since they still have outstanding matters to deal with such as protests, among others. Mpholo says the play-offs are scheduled to take place at the weekend of September 26 and 27 and the venue will be announced at a later stage. Meanwhile, there are also issues regarding Vaal Milano and Vaal Manchester FC in Stream C. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that Vaal Milano FC wants to participate in the playoffs despite the fact that they are Safa Sedibeng SABC League Club ‘Vaal Milano’s feeder team. It is reported that Vaal Milano FC wants to challenge this Safa rule.

Makalakalane lauds participation of white community VANDERBIJLPARK. - Former Bafana Bafana midfielder, the dreadlocked Augustine ‘Mthakathi’ Makalakalane, was among the spectators during the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s junior league. This exciting u/13 and u/15 league took place at the George Thabe Stadium over the weekend. Makalakalane, on a mission to empower development coaches in this country, was overwhelmed by the talent on display on the day. Mthakathi, as he is known in soccer circles, believes there is great potential for some of these youngsters to play for Bafana Bafana: “I’m humbled and honoured to witness these youngsters’ talent at this age and their future looks promising. “I must acknowledge the develop-
ment coaches for the job they have done on these boys. “I was stunned by what I saw today.” Makalakalane encourages development coaches to empower themselves by getting relevant coaching qualifications. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that this former Vaal Professionals and Jomo Cosmos star is busy planning to host a coaching course for all the coaches in this region. Makalakalane was happy to see white community soccer teams still participating in the league as was the case in the past. znale@media24.com Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Au gustine Makalakalane was encouraged when he saw that white community soc cer teams still participated in the league at the George Thabe Stadium over the weekend.Photo: Zacharia Nale.

SEBOKENG. - Manco Milano started their ABC Motsepe League Campaign on a high note when they recently beat Dinonyana FC 2 - 1 at the Welkom Sports Grounds. This was the start that head coach Thabiso Makedi had wished for. Both goals were scored by the debut striker Rethabile ‘Magiya’ Soso, who could have easily scored a hat-trick but wasted some golden opportunities to beat the goalkeeper.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the game, Makedi said he was impressed with his new man and predicted Soso could become the top goal-scorer at the end of the season if his weekend performance was anything to go by. This Sebokeng-based outfit will continue where they left off against Dinonyana FC when they host Super Eagles FC from Bethlehem at Flavious Mareka Stadium on Saturday. The game kicks off at 15:00. znale@media24.com

I took down his number and booked an appointment with him. He charged me only R100 to read my fortune and showed me my enemies in a mirror and I was shocked. He made them come and confess everything they had done to me as professed by Prophet Shiru. They caused me to break up with my husband and have lots of bad luck. They had done muthi that made my forehead swell and tokoloshe grow inside it. He then performed ritual to remove it and showed it to me and cured me after that. There’s no other way I can thank Prophet shiru than telling the whole world about him. He helps with Love, luck, marriage, court cases, business, protection etc.
