Imbizo for Sharpeville community

Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - The Department of Correctional Services in partnership with Sharpeville SAPS, Emfuleni Local Municipality(ELM), Departmnet of Health, Depatment of Education, SANCA and other NGOs recently held an Imbizo at the Sharpeville Hall. The Imbizo was held in order to explain the processes and procedures of correctional services and to also answer various questions that have been raised by members of the community. The aim of the event was to also take correctional services to the people in order to strengthen the relationship between them and the community. Many of the speakers at the Imbizo highlighted the importance of unity between all the stakeholders involved in rehabilitating offenders including the communtity at large. Groenpunt Correctional Services Director Vusi Sibeko says, “The Jazz group that is playing here today is a reflection of the kind of work we do, ensuring that offenders have

been fully rehabilitated and ready to be integrated back into the community.” Sibeko stated that the major challenge they were faced with was that of ‘victim-and-offender-dialogue.’ He pleaded with victims to open up their hearts and hear what offenders had to say. “These people need your forgiveness in order to turn over a new leaf in life. Some will not even be comfortable going back to communities where they are not forgiven as it will make them feel unwelcome and unwanted.” Sharpeville SAPS Spokesperson Captain Atie Loate says, “We as the SAPS support what is being done by the Department of Correctional Services, while also ensuring that we play our role in crime prevention. “Another important point is that the community need to be educated about the processes of correctional services, so that they know what happens and that prisoners are not just let out of prison without proper procedures having taken place.” Loate concludes.

SEDIBENG. - The South African Reservists Forum is calling all reservists to support their national meeting with the South African Police Services (SAPS) management in Pretoria next Tuesday. According to the national spokesperson of the forum, Molefi Masuelle they will be heading to Pretoria next week to meet with SAPS management with the aim of reaching an agreement for the implementation of an agreement of the integration of the reservists into SAPS. “This issue has long been agreed on but SAPS management are just dragging their feet to implement it. So we are going to them to discuss this and make su-

re that everything is done as agreed years ago,” says Masuelle who adds that amongst other things they will be seeking permanent employment for reservists, reinstatement of unfairly dismissed reservists, an end to discrimination and compensation for those who died or were injured in the line of duty. “We are pleading with all our members to please come to Pretoria on 21 March as we will be holding a night vigil for those that will be meeting SAPS management on 22 March. "We are also calling all churches to pray for us so that this matter reaches finality and we can go on with our lives,” Masuelle ends.

Struggling with Scleroderma Lerato Serero

ORANGE FARMS. - A brave young mother from Extension 4 in Orange Farms has had enough of being the laughing stock of the community. Kgomotso Ratlou (36) has come out to raise awareness about Scleroderma, an autoimmune disease which she believes the community does not know enough about. Scleroderma is an autoimmune, rheumatic, and chronic disease that affects the body by hardening connective tissue. This means that a person’s immune system works against itself. Scleroderma is chronic and lasts for lifetime. However, like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, scleroderma can be treated and the symptoms managed. The cause of scleroderma is unknown and there is currently no cure, but there are treatments that can effec-

tively prevent or limit the damage caused by this chronic disease. Ratlou says that she has had enough of staying behind closed doors because of people that laugh at her when she goes out to shop, when she joins social gatherings or even at her local church where she has stopped attending. Ratlou started noticing that something strange was happening to her at a young age and was diagnosed with the diseases in 1998 after being in and out of hospital. She says that the situation becomes worse in winter as her skin shrinks and becomes hard. Her ears, mouth and most parts of her body also become small as she also develops a skin condition that leaves burn-like scars. Ratlou says that her blood also becomes bluish in colour and it becomes difficult for her to hold on to things with her hands. “This disease is painful and on top of that I have become

a joke. People don’t know how to address me as they never have any idea whether I am an adult or a child. I have since stopped going to church as there were people there too that were mocking me every time I went,” says the obviously hurt mother of two healthy boys. Ratlou says that she wants people that are in her situation to come out so that they can help one another and form some a support group. “I just want to be accepted as I am. “This is who I am. I want those who are suffering like me to come out and know that they are not alone,” ends the teary-eyed Ratlou.

Community wants house demolished Victims laid to rest The five members of the Mokoena family were laid to rest over the weekend. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.

Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - Zone 7 residents in ward 38 last week complained about a vacant house, 9983 Jinjani Street which they said poses a danger to the community. The family that used to live at the house is said to have vacated the house years ago, leaving it in the hands of thieves and nyaope smokers who vandalised it. According to some members of the community, a vacant house often invites unsavoury characters, which is currently the case with the house. The house has apparently been vacant for more than 15 years and has off late been harbouring nyaope smokers and thieves. The community says they no longer feel safe, especially those living right next to the house. “We have pleaded with the ward councilor to demolish the house because it will make the community, more especially our young ones, victims of crime. Our pleas have gone unheard as nothing has been done about the house until now. People who steal from us use this house as a hideout,” they say. Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) Democratic Alliance (DA) PR Councillor Tebello Mokoena says, “We recently conducted a visit to the house that the zone 7 residents have been complaining about. We found that

a lot of young children play there, while nyaope smokers are injecting themselves. “The owners and the municipality must both take responsibility for that house and decide whether it will be renovated and sold, or whether it will be demolished.” Mokoena adds that this is a matter of urgency as the municipality should not wait for somebody to get raped or killed before taking action. “At such an early age children in Zone 7 are being exposed to drugs. This is something that has to be stopped very quickly,” Mokoena concludes.

Sharpeville marked a Lengweleng housing project takes off turning point in South Africa's history Lazarus Dithagiso

Ne wsEdi t or Comme nt s

This coming Monday (March 21) is Human Rights Day but before I get into that I must commend Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng, his team, the provincial government and all other stakeholders for bringing deserved dignity back to the Mokoena family in Zone 13. This they did by making sure that the five family members that lost their lives following a fire were buried in a humane manner and that those that are left behind will pick up the pieces and continue their lives in a brand new and refurbished house. I take my hat off to you sir; this is what humanity is all about! Now coming to Human Rights Day, for the less informed, allow me to me educate you a little. Human Rights Day (formerly Sharpeville Massacre) is described as an event which occurred on 21 March 1960, at the police station in Sharpeville. After a day of demonstrations against the Pass laws, a crowd of about 5,000 to 7,000 protesters went to the police station. The then South African Police opened fire on the crowd, killing 69 people. Sources disagree as to the behaviour of the crowd; some state that the crowd was peaceful, while others state that the crowd had been hurling stones at the police, and that the shooting started when the crowd started advancing toward the fence around the

police station. A storm of international protest followed the Sharpeville shootings, including sympathetic demonstrations in many countries and condemnation by the United Nations. Sharpeville marked a turning point in South Africa's history; the country found itself increasingly isolated in the international community. In present-day South Africa, the 21st of March is celebrated as a public holiday in honour of human rights and to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre. A national day against racism will also be commemorated on Human Rights Day this year. As we celebrate Human Rights Day on Monday, in the words of the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon I would like to say, “Everyone can advance the struggle against injustice, intolerance and extremism. I call on states to honour their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on people to hold their governments to account. And I call for special protection for human rights defenders who courageously serve our collective cause. Let us respond to the cries of the exploited, and uphold the right to human dignity for all.” I could not have said it better myself. Lerato...

SEBOKENG. - At least 128 RDP houses will be built for the residents of New Village popularly known as 'Lengweleng' near Zone 10 in the second phase of the housing project. This was mentioned by the Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Housing, Sello Pitso. Pitso was addressing the community during the Housing Beneficiary Educational Workshop last week. The workshop was facilitated through the office of the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile. The aim was to educate the residents to stop selling their RDP houses and also pay for the services rendered. "These houses are worth well over R150 000 and they are not for sale. The government lives according to its promises for a better life for all," said Pitso who added that they want to show people who were not given houses in the first phase that they had not forgotten about them. A steering committee will be es-

Two local match officials among referees suspended by PSL ver, despite their suspension by PSL, the two referees were seen officiating the top of the table Safa Sedibeng League match between Real Barcelona FC and Jamaica FC formerly Verona FC at the Zone 3 Stadium over the weekend. Hlungwani’s several decisions in two matches - Orlando Pirates vs Platinum Stars (9 January 2016) and Polokwane City vs Maritzburg United (3 February 2016) were found to be unsatisfactory. He has been set aside for a

period of six weeks and further hit in the pocket with the forfeiture of his stipend for a period of one month Clifford Motaung has been suspended for four weeks after making an incorrect decision in the Orlando Pirates vs Platinum Stars (9 January 2016). To date, the Referees’ Review Committee, citing poor performance, has sanctioned several top officials in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and National First Division

(NFD). The committee was unanimous that the new match officials’ disciplinary code stipulates that acts of poor performance that have been committed through blatant refereeing mistakes by not interpreting the Laws of the Games accordingly, Must be sanctioned. Despite their suspension Sedibeng Referees Development Officer Jack Leboko was behind the two officials saying these things do happen in football. Leboko is convinced the two will bounce back to officiate in the top flight football very soon. “I have faith in these two gentlemen and I know what they are capable of and I hope to see them very soon officiating in Absa Premier League. They are very strong individuals who won’t let this suspension affect them,” says Leboko.

Following the poor performance by Safa Sedibeng Regional team at U/17 Future Champions Gauteng Tournament, heads must indeed roll. In most cases when a team is not doing well the coaches are to blame but in this case football administrators in this region are failing the development of football. The poor performance of the regional team has nothing to do with the coach and everything with malpractice of regional administration. How on earth can you tell a coach that he must prepare a team on the stone-hard earth that is Rathanda Stadium in Heidelberg while we have world class facilities right here in our own town? Then you expect them to play against teams such as Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United to mention only two. It is evident that those with the authority to make decisions has never even kicked a ball in their lives! TOUCHLINE blames the so-called ‘Congress’ for the team’s poor performance, not the players or the coaches. I mean seventeen players from local teams showed up for the tournament. The only thing that this ‘Congress’ is concerned about is ‘returning’ to their seats at

Some individuals think that Sedibeng soccer has become their own personal little table of ‘fooze-ball.’ TOUCHLINE challenges Lesedi and Midvaal Local Football Association to get rid of those ‘ghost’ football administrators who claim to be running football. Real Barcelona FC are SAB League Stream A champions Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - It’s true, Sebokeng Real Barcelona FC are Safa Sedibeng SAB League champions in Stream A. This was after they beat their bitter rivals Jamaica FC formerly Verona FC 3-2 at the Zone 3 Stadium over the weekend. Barcelona Coach Dingane Tshabalala was the happiest coach on the day. This game was a decider but failed to produce fireworks. The winner will meet either Vaal Milano FC or Metro Stars FC in the regional play offs to decide on a team that will represent Safa Sedibeng in the Promotional Play Offs. As things stand - Vaal Milano FC are the league champions in Stream B, but they still have an outstanding case. Milano FC coach Tebello 'Benza' Kheswa

was on the bench when they played against Metro Stars FC two weeks ago despite the fact that he was given marching orders by the referee in the previous game. Metro Stars FC filed a protest against coach Kheswa and they are likely to win the case against Vaal Milano based on the rules. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster after the Stream A game, Tshabalala said he wants to see his team go back to the second division. However, Tshabalala acknowledged the fact that there is still a long way to go before his team can start celebrating. “We must remain focused because we are still going to play one game to decide which team will represent this region in the promotional play-offs. “But I’m positive that we will come out victorious,” he concluded.
