God’s four blessings Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON. - An Evaton family has found out that with blessings comes strain. In February this year the couple Shadrack Sekhoto (44) and Dimakatso Tsamayi (40) welcomed into their family, quadruplets Thabo, Thabang, Nthabeleng and Thabiso in addition to their two older children. Sekhoto says that they are blessed as they (the couple) were also born from families that had twins. The birth of the quadruplets however has brought strain on the family and they need help. The unemployed couple who survive on piece jobs is grateful to their local councillor, Jabu Zondi whom they said makes sure that they receive the necessary help from the relevant authorities. “They are on formula milk as breastfeeding all four of them proves to be very difficult. They are lovely angels but as you can imagine, they are a full-time job. They cry a lot and play all the time. I only get rest when they are asleep. Shadrack is a very hands-on father and he helps me out a lot,” said Tsamayi. The couple said that they wish they had a proper house and space for their children. “We live in a rented place. The township is a wonderful place in which I would love these children to grow up in. If only I could get a proper job and salary,” said Sekhoto. Community members that would like to help the family can call (016) 950 7038. mduduzi.mathebula@media24.com The family lives in a tworoom shack in Evaton. 8yearold beaten viciously for R30 Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - A 24-year-old mother of Tshepiso Phase 3 has admitted to have failed her 8-year-old son in living with an abusive man for years. Her son had to be hospitalised with serious injuries after he was beaten by his 32-year-old stepfather for allegedly having stolen R30. This is the second time that a stepfather of Sedibeng has badly beaten a child for apparently having stolen money. The boy was admitted to Sebokeng Hospital for a week recently. The young mother says, “The incident happened on a Sunday. I found my son in bed sleeping after I came home from work, I checked up on him and saw how

badly he had been beaten. When I asked my boyfriend what happened he said he had beaten my child and called him a thief.” She says she tried to get help for her son and she told her boyfriend that she was going to seek medical help for the boy, but he assaulted her and locked both of them inside the house. “The following day my boyfriend still refused to let my son go to the doctor. We took a picture of his injuries and we went to get something for him at the pharmacy. When the assistant at the pharmacy saw the extent of my son’s injuries in the picture, he advised us to take the child to the doctor.” The distraught mother says at this time, her boyfriend told her to keep quiet and not tell anyone what had happened otherwise he would hit both of them again. “He forced us to say that my son was beaten by a

friend’s brother at a soccer match and this is what he also told the doctors at the hospital.” She says she regrets staying with an abusive man as her son was almost killed. “Now my son has been taken away from me because of this. I plan on getting my life together so that my son can come back to me,” she said. The suspect handed himself over at the Sharpeville Police Station. Sebokeng Cluster spokesperson Lieutenant Teboho Lephoto confirms that the incident did occur and that a case was opened with the Vereeniging Child Protection Unit. According to the family, the suspect was denied bail and remains in police custody. Lephoto could not confirm this. Moleboheng.Chaha@media24.com

VANDERBIJLPARK. - “I want everyone to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have

the capability, the potential and the skills to take this station to the next level.” Vanderbijlpark Station Commander Briga-

dier Sam Manala especially want the women to receive merit awards. “Female officers are responding well although at a slow pace. “Thanks to a general positive response, everyone has adapted well to operations since I took office,” he said. Brig Manala handed over certificates to detectives and constables who put in tremendous efforts and achieved successful arrests. The quarterly awards were conducted in his office recently. Constable Teboho Yawa and Constable

Kgokedi Sekwati were awarded for successfully arresting eight suspects for possession of a stolen truck with two trailers and a stock worth R8 million in NW 7. They also arrested a suspect for discharging his firearm in a municipal area and recovered a 9 mm Norinco firearm. Speaking about the recent national police crime statistics of 2015/16, Manala said there’s more to be done: “We need to improve drastically if we want to call ourselves the watch dogs of the nation.” lazarus.dithagiso@media24.com

Taxi owner gunned down in public Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - A taxi owner who is also the chairperson of the Vaal Wits Taxi Association was shot to death executionstyle in Vereeniging last Friday. The incident happened at around 13:20 on the corner of Merriman Avenue and Joubert Street. Onlookers said Willy ‘Spokes’ Nxuma (55) was in the company of a woman, waiting on the street when they were approached by two fully armed black males. After a few words were exchanged between them, several shots were heard. Members of the public ran for cover and it was later discovered that Nxumalo was shot. After the ordeal, a silver vehicle appeared out of nowhere and picked up the suspects before speeding off. At least nine cartridges were found close to the body.

Police spokesperson Captain Shado Mashobane said the deceased was wounded with five bullets to the upper body. Mashobane said the preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects used false car registration number plates. Mashobane said the police cannot deny or agree that the shooting is related to taxi violence as investigations are ongoing. By the time of going to print, no one had been arrested. Sisiki Nxuma who is the deceased’s younger sister, said her brother had also escaped death by a whisker in Sasolburg in June this year. Nxuma who was a father of four will be buried on Sunday. lazarus.dithagiso@media24.com Solly, the older brother and Sisiki Nxu ma, the younger sister of Spokes Willy Nxuma, clean the blood of the deceased from the ground in Vereeniging.

ArcelorMittal SA initiates B BBEE ownership transaction SEDIBENG. - ArcelorMittal South Africa recently announced that the board of directors has approved a process to initiate a Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) ownership transaction. In a statement ArcelorMittal SA said that it is committed to achieving full compliance with the country’s B-BBEE Codes of good practice and to increasing broad-based participation in the South African steel industry. “We have made steady progress on our transformation strategy over the last year, prioritising the key pillars of employment

equity, skills development, enterprise development and procurement,” the statement said. The company also recently announced the Ikageng broad-based Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP), through which all qualifying ArcelorMittal employees in South Africa will own a share in the business. In terms of the proposed transaction, KPMG has been retained to advise the board of directors and, in terms of its mandate, KPMG will engage with a number of black investors with a view to successfully concluding a transaction.

Community furious about ‘overworked’clinic workers

Lerato Serero

SEBOKENG. - The community of Zone 13 is up in arms about what they deem an understaffed clinic in their area. The residents voiced their anger to Sedibeng Ster on Monday saying that nurses are allowed to leave the clinic without replacements being made which places a massive workload on those that remain. They also complain that since the Boitumelo Clinic has been closed there have been lengthy queues causing many seriously ill patients to go without assistance for days on end. “We are sick and tired of this situation as some of us wake up at around 05:00 to come for medication but we receive no service. Something needs to be done,” said a patient who is on antiretroviral (ARV) medication. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster about the situation, Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC of Health and Social Development, Sello Pitso says that they are in a process of provincialisation which means that all the clinics in the province will fall under the Gauteng Department of Health. He adds that where there has been staff shortages they have tried to transfer others from other clinics and even hospitals to fill their positions. “At the moment we do not hire new staff because of the provincialisation. We are just awaiting a memorandum of understanding from the province and things will go back to normal. Our people must just be patient.” About the residents going to the clinic at 05:00, Pitso says that he has, himself, warned the community to refrain from doing so as the clinic only opens at 08:00. Pitso ended by saying that plans are afoot for a new

clinic to be built in Boitumelo as every detail on the process has been concluded. lerato.serero@mooivaalmedia.com

ArcelorMittal CEO, Mr Paul O’Flaherty said: “This is an important and long-awaited step forward in our journey towards achieving full compliance with the country’s transformation objectives.” The full terms and salient dates and times of the proposed B-BBEE transaction will be announced in due course.

DA lays charges after alleged fraudulent stand sales Moleboheng Chaha

EVATON. - Charges of fraud and corruption were lodged by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Friday. The party was represented by its DA Gauteng constituency head for Evaton, member of Parliament (MP) Kingsol Chabalala. Chabalala lodged charges of fraud and corruption against the owner of Siyanqoba Projects who is also the chairperson of the Evaton Community Policing Forum (CPF), Jacob Mhlambi. This follows allegations that Mhlambi fraudulently sold stands to Evaton West residents, charging them a water and electricity connection fee of R4000 that was apparently never received by Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM). In a meeting on Sunday, residents stated that they would also open fraud charges against Mhlambi.

They said they would also be involving the Human Rights Commission: “Our rights here have been violated. “We have had to live in a place with no electricity, water or any other basic services for years.” Chabalala said, “The community of Evaton West Extension 7 approached the national office of the DA to ask for help regarding this matter and it was then referred to me.” He added that residents were trying to do things in a legal manner by buying stands instead of occupying the land illegally: “Sadly the people who were trying to do the right thing have been taken advantage of.” Ward 26 councillor Nomsa Mooi said she was only made aware of the matter by residents after they complained to her about basic services: “As a ward councillor, I am obliged to ensure that the residents in my ward have water and sanitation and I am still in the process of getting the services to the residents.”

Mooi said she could not comment on the matter of the land and whether it was fraudulently sold because she was informed that the land currently occupied is privately owned. Mhlambi denies the allegations, saying that he is a legitimate businessman: “At this stage I cannot comment on anything because the DA never tried to engage with me regarding the allegations made by the community. I only found out after charges had been lodged against me.” Mhlambi did not want to comment further on the matter. ELM’s mayoral spokesperson Pinky Mofokeng says that mayor Gretha Hlongwane is aware of the allegations and the unfortunate situation at Evaton West, Extension 7 of illegal selling of municipal land. Mofokeng further says that the municipality has embarked on an investigation to get to the root of the allegations through the department of Human Settlement that is expected

What kind of nation are we? NewsEdi t or Comment s

In August a child died after allegedly being beaten by its stepfather, last week a woman lost her life after enduring abuse from her partner for what it was said to be quite a long time ending with him stabbing her, and this week a child has been taken in by the Child

Protection Services from his mother following an alleged severe beating that saw him in hospital for a week. An elderly friend of mine passed by the office this week and what he said to me struck and stayed in my mind, hence this piece. You see, my friend thinks that we are an angry nation that does not seem to control itself when confronted by difficulties, proved by what we are doing to our own. He tells me that for a long time we have been a ticking bomb waiting to explode. Do not get me wrong, my friend did not know the contents of the paper this week but he was

Letters ELM in serious financial trouble Hendrik Schmidt DA MP and Constituency Leader: Emfuleni South writes: Although it is well-known that the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) has been in financial trouble for number of years, the auditor-general report indicating the financial position of the municipality as at 30 June 2014 describes a very concerning financial situation. Considering the contents thereof as well as the fact that an auditor-general report for the year ending June 2015 should also have been available to the municipal manager by the au-

ditor-general, we call on the municipality to indicate what action steps have been taken to resolve its financial crisis. According to the AG report as at 30 June 2014, the municipality suffered material losses to the amount of R175 million (in the financial year 2012-13: R169 million) for water losses being 34% of the water purchased by the municipality and suffered a further loss of R278 million (in the financial year 2012-2013: R1.211 billion) for electricity distributed by the municipality. These losses alone amount to a staggering R453 million!

commenting on a totally different subject matter which I will not engage in at the present moment. But this was of course relevant enough for me to compare it to the kind of scenarios that we are confronted with week in and out - particularly in this newspaper. My dear friend asks basic but factual questions to support his statement of us being an angry nation. He asks why we are killing each other like flies. He asks why is it that a father will deprive a daughter of her youth by repeatedly raping her. He further asks if our youth has decided to let their lives go by giving

themselves to substance abuse. My answer was simple, I do not know! What seems clear to me however and as many others will attest, I believe, is that we have decided to become an unruly nation that has become numb to rules and regulations. We no longer fear the rule of law and have allowed abuse and many other bad things to rule our society. After that meeting with my friend I did an introspection but could not really come up with an answer hence my question to you today, what kind of a nation do you think we are? Lerato...

Jozy reigns Fashion Without Borders Vaal Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Fashion Without Borders founder and creator Serge Kabisoso from Efigy Productions was a little more than distraught when he was told at a venue he had booked just 12 hours before his show was about to start, that they were unable to host his event. However, the Congolese model and fashion expert Kabisoso bounced to plan B, not allowing any hurdles to steal his thunder. All the ‘Who’s Who’ of the Vaal and neighbouring countries, including Botswana and Namibia, were warmly welcomed. The fashion show that celebrated its own origins and heritage lived up to its pride. Among the designers that stole the show were Black Trash from Botswana, the award

winning Best Canadian International Designer and Fanny Mandina from Kinshasa DRC - the award winning Best Young Designer in DRC. “The 16 designers who participated did not disappoint and left onlookers in awe with their designs - however, only two people were going to be left standing - Best Model and Best Designer,” said Ephram Modingwane SA fashion designer. After hours of blinding lights, glorious outfits and blood sweat, Best Designer was again the reigning champion - Ramoetse Tshabalala, aka Jozy from Sharpeville. While the audience was astonished by the young designers, a Sharpeville model Liemiso Khoposhe stepped in and was awarded Best Model. mathebula.mduduzi@media24.com

VCC hosts successful stokvel day ADVERTORIAL VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Cash and Carry (VCC) recently kept the spirit of unity alive as they held the mother of all stokvel days where various stokvels from areas such as Sasolburg, Parys, and Deneysville including the entire Vaal Triangle were invited. VCC is one of the biggest wholesalers specialising in food and liquor in the Vaal. VCC store manager Arthur Tlhakanelo said, “One of the segments VCC caters to is stokvels and our understanding of this market goes 13 years back. “Stokvels are formed when a group of people come together with a purpose of putting away monthly savings that will be

used in December to purchase groceries.” Tlhakanelo states that because the stokvel purchase is made in bulk, VCC offers special prices and they pride themselves in always providing the best service to their customers. “We invite all stokvels to hand in their quotation requests with due dates as their stock will be prepared for them in time. Deliveries are also available and subject to conditions which can be discussed in store.” For more information contact Connie on: (016) 455 5657 or 078 498 2586 or email telesales.vereeniging@masscash.co.za

Students cook to impress VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Public Relations Management, in partnership with Emerald Resort & Casino and other local sponsors hosted the fourth annual Top Chef Culinary Competition recently. The purpose of the event is to provide professional development opportunities for hospitality students preparing for careers in the field of Hospitality Management and to build lasting relationships between institutions of higher learning. The competition was held between seven institutions namely VUT, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), University of Zululand, Sedibeng College, Ekurhuleni College, Westcol College and Central Johannesburg College (CJC). Each institution has to send two representatives to part-take in the competition. The participants were required to prepare a three-course meal for two guests

using ingredients provided in a “mystery basket” and were judged on their performance during preparation and on the presentation of the food. Nicole Schwartz a 20-yearold hospitality student from Westcol College ended up the ultimate winner of the competition. “My dream has always been to be a chef and this has been my motivation to work hard. “I went into the competition with the vision to win and with God by my side because without him I would be nothing.” Nicole mentions that she began planning possible recipes for the competition from the day she was chosen to participate, platting ideas played a big role in her presentation. Khomotso Kekane from VUT stated that students needed more time to complete their tasks. “In the end, the presentations displayed creativity, and great ideas showing that students could think out of the box.”

It was game over!

Touchl i ne

It was all the way down memory lane for TOUCHLINE, who got to talk about Evaton football with Oupa Tladinyane, one of the best players in my time recently. He played for the now-defunct Beheman Rover FC while I was playing Evaton Ocean Stars FC. Coach Happy also remembers some of the players we played with and against. The name that came up the most was a no-nonsense defender by the name of Isaack Manaba, otherwise known as ‘G-Man’. He was my teammate

15

at Ocean Stars FC and the game that I still remember was when Tladinyane took the ball and said, “This game must come to an end because this guy keeps kicking us.” It was game over! As the day seemed to come to a standstill we also talked about the great talent the area had, but that the lack of opportunities kept us down. We could have walked into any PSL team starting lineup and cemented our positions. Even then, this was already the sad reality of our circumstances in football. We had no opportunities like today’s youngsters and the worst part is that they take it for granted. In our days there were no scouts to see us play and some of

us retired prematurely. This game made many of us what we are today because it kept us busy and disciplined. We also touched base on the development of players – the conditions in which we played compared to today’s generation. We were sitting there watching the u/13, u/15, u/17’s playing and we analysed them, asking ourselves where they would be in two or five years to come. This was during the Pooe Heritage Soccer Tournament. Coach Happy also reminded TOUCHLINE about the article I wrote on dazzling Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabo Rakhale before he turned professional. It was more than ten years ago when I pro-

filed the boy, saying, “He is destined for a great future.” I was blessed that I could identify his talent at a young age while he was still playing for Junior Lions FC. There were good times of football in Evaton and men and women would come in numbers to watch us playing. We used to go to the grounds early in the morning on Sunday and return home late at night. The good thing is that our parents knew we were safe because football was associated with safety. This meeting with Tladinyane was the best way to celebrate Heritage Month!

ELFA falling apart Zacharia Nale

The Students focus on next test Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - VUT FC team manager Dolfas Tsotetsi said ‘The Students’ will now focus their energy on the league. This was after they suffered a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Soweto Panthers FC in a match played in Soweto over the weekend. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Tsotetsi said

they have since put their weekend defeat behind them and that their priority was to finish in a respective position in the league. The Students will be away from home against AmaBEE FC in the ABC Motsepe League match this coming Saturday. Tsotetsi believes this a ‘character encounter’ for the boys, taking into consideration they will be playing away

from home. “This is one game that will break the camel’s back come Saturday because they will be playing before their home supporters. It is not going to be an easy outing for us but we are mentally prepared for them. We have been in this situation before. I’m confident we will overcome whatever they throw at us,” said Tsotetsi.

SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) is falling apart. The Super League play-offs scheduled to take place over the weekend were called off because some executive commitee members disagreed about the participation of Young Milano FC. As things stand, the executive committee is divided, some feeling very strongly that there is no way Young Milano FC can participate in the play-offs because the club is the same team as Vaal Milano FC which campaigns in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League. However, Junior Gusha, who is part of the executive committee, dismissed the claims that Young Milano FC and Vaal Milano FC are the same team. Gusha said the two teams are not owned by the same person. This is despite the fact that their coach Tebello ‘Benza’ Kheswa sits on both teams’ bench when they play. “I want to put the record straight that Young Milano FC is not the same team as Vaal Milano, which happened to be my club in the SAB League but I’m not the right person to comment on this because I’m also part of the executive committee,” said Gusha.Meanwhile, Sedibeng Ster Sport has also learned that teams such as Pekwa All Stars FC have also lodged an appeal after their protest was dismissed by the Disciplinary Committee. The executive resolved outstanding matters such as protests and the teams were also expected to receive the final log at the competitions meeting held on Wednesday. This was after the team lodged protests against Juventus FC. The latter was crowned champions in the troubled Stream A after a controversial ‘massacre’ of goals scored in the last game of the season. Stars FC and Juventus FC shocked local soccer fans when they scored 26 and 37 goals respectively in their last games of the season. This sent shock waves throughout the country with Sedibeng Ster and our sister newspaper City Press carrying the article after one of the teams felt hard-done by about the outcome of the games. However, even though the matter has been put to rest, Sedibeng Ster Sport is well-informed that some of the teams’ owners want to take the matter to Safa national office. znale@media24.com
