Flames of fury!
Charles Gangasa (64) at the MediClinic in a critical condition after he sustained seri ous burn wounds as he tried to help his daughter light up a gas heater on Friday.. Pinky Mofokeng
SHARPEVILLE. - The winter season is upon us and with it comes the horror of ravaging fires. The Gangasa family cheated death when their rented shack caught fire at Mareneng in Rooisteen. Phindile (34) and her father Charles Gangasa (64) survived the horror incident after a gas heater exploded on Friday afternoon. This incident shocked other tenants who rescued the family from the burning shack. The two were severely burned and taken to a local clinic before the father was admitted to the Medi-Clinic in Vanderbijlpark on the same day. It is believed that 38 tenants are renting at Mareneng and have been living without electricity for more than three months. The tenants claim that they use one gas stove with three bars to prepare food in the owner’s garage. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the still horrified Phindile says that she struggled to switch a gas heater on as she
was afraid of the gas fumes. That is when she called her father for help.“My father was busy trying to light the gas heater when I heard him screaming in the living room. I was also busy in the kitchen and I came running. He told me his hands are burning. “While I was running to see what was happening I also felt the heat on my legs and hands spread to my hair. Then I called for help and that is when other tenants came we were then both taken to the Sharpeville Clinic,” says Phindile. Her father suffered serious burn wounds and is in a critical condition.According to the daughter when she came back from the clinic she found that most of the furniture had burnt away. When approached for comment Pinky Nhlapo, who took over from her father as landlord, promised that the electricity issue would be fixed soon.Members of the community are advised to be careful when dealing with either gas or electricity.

Nyaope: Stop or you die!
Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - The ‘Stop or they are going to kill you’ campaign was put into motion on Monday morning in one of the most dangerous
and feared places in the Vaal - Zone 7 - where the misuse of ‘nyaope’ has left its mark. The campaign was organised by a group of ex-convicts named South African Concerned Ex-con-

victs (SACE) who fight to eradicate crime and drugs in the communities. “Drugs don’t make you smart. They will kill you or cause you to end up in jail,” says rehabilitated Bheki Hlatshwayo from SACE.The campaign was embraced by Ward Councillor Lahliwe Rapapadi who acknowledges the movement of ex-convicts. “We are impeded and affected by ‘nyaope.’ Today we say ‘no’ to drug dealers and we ask the users and dealers to stop,” says Rapapadi. About six houses were visited by a group of community members and Police including the SACE. The formal visit was straight to the point: all drug peddlers and pushers were asked to stop. Drug-user Mlungisi Likhuleni (25) vowed before his mother Cecilia Likhuleni that he would stop selling and that he would work to better his life. Cecilia says she told her child that if he did not stop, one day he would be killed because people are angry about this nyaope. The other gogo who has been suffering due to her grandson’s (Thabo Faba) behavior is Salina Fantisi. She says her house has become the talk of the town. People mock her and call her names. “I’m hiding like a criminal and what my grandson is selling is killing their children,” says Fantisi, who burst into tears beside her grandson. Faba also swears not to use and sell drugs again.

Not a medium to rare crime 10yearold girl raped by stepfather Pinky Mofokeng
Lazarus Dithagiso
SEDIBENG. - The law must leave criminals in our hands so that we can teach them some lessons! This is the outcry from cattle-farmers who have lost hundreds of thousands of rands due to live stock theft. The stock theft unit followed a tip off about people who were driving around in an E20 Nissan minibus taxi at Witkop farm near Barrage. By the time the Vereeniging Stock Theft Unit arrived, two suspects had disappeared in the grass and the other two were apprehended. The incident happened at Witkop farm on April 24 at about 04:30. Two of the four suspects were caught red-handed slaughtering four cattle belonging to farmer Jan Volschenk. Some of the carcasses were found loaded in a minibus taxi. It has been suspected that the meat is being sold to butche-
ries. The angry owner accompanied by his neighbours appealed to the police to release the suspects into his hands. He said this was the second incident in a period of two months and that they suspect that it is the work of a syndicate. The police said the suspects are from Protea South Informal settlement in Soweto. Asked about the value of the cattle, Volschenk said it’s about R60 000 loss. Three of the cattle were about to give birth and the other had a calf. Police spokesperson Sergeant Simon Mofokatsane said they followed the lead to Witkop farm in the early hours of the morning. The suspects were charged with possession of stolen goods, and they will appear in Vanderbijlpark Magistrates court. They will later appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates court as well.

BOIPATONG. - Peace, unity, preservation and the restoration of human dignity marks Freedom Day in South Africa - but some men still abuse and mistreat women and children on a daily basis. In one of the most recent outrages, a 41-year-old stepfather allegedly raped his 10-yearold daughter on Wednesday evening. It appears that the ex-convict tried several times to rape the older sister (19) ,without any success. According to the mother she came home from work and found her house locked. She called out repeatedly but nobody responded. She says, “I looked through a window and saw my husband half-naked inside with the television on playing porn. I asked him where my children were. When he failed to answer me I stormed into the house and found my daughter in the bathroom.” The mother then asked her daughter what had happened. The child explained to her mother that the stepfather started by promising to give her money; then he chased her little brother out and told her to watch pornographic movies with him. He then took her to the bedroom and used cunnilingus on her, before repeatedly raping her. The 37-year-old mother could not restrain her tears as she explained how she tried to keep him away by means of a protection order, but he refused to leave the house. As this was not the first time he had tried to rape the girls, she claims she tried to get help from his family members, without any luck. It seemed as if the mother had failed to protect her innocent children from her sexually sick husband who preyed on them. The girl was taken
to the Kopanong Hospital and it was confirmed that she had been sexually abused. Police spokesperson Constable Thembeka Koago confirms that the suspect was arrested and charged with rape. He appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Monday and the case was postponed to May 6.

Comments The more things change in this country, the worse they become. It has always been said that change should be for the better but in this country things go vice versa. The granting of permission by ICASA to TOP TV to broadcast pornographic material on their channels boggles my mind. Yes, South Africa is a democratic state, but the more we want to get rid of its corruption, maladministration, crime and many other social ills the
What are they doing to SA? more we seem to allow the rot to set in. Allowing pornographic material to be televised on our screens at a time when most kids are still wide awake instantly begs the question - what are we teaching our young? Not a day passes without reports of sexual violence all over the country, yet permission is issued that material that encourages such acts is broadcasted into our living rooms. Some would argue that only a certain percentage of the population has this channel, but does that make it OK? That TOP TV issued a statement that says the permission is a ‘victory for democracy’, says it all. The more things change the worse
Churches pray for Metro Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- Yet another public meeting concerning the Sedibeng District Municipality being turned into a Metropolitan City was called at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre in Vereeniging on Friday. This time those called were particularly members of different churches in the area. They apparently prayed for the proposed merger to go through smoothly. Last month another meeting was called by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) to hear the publics’ views on the matter. The Sedibeng District Municipality is proposing that two local municipalities that fall under it (Midvaal and Emfuleni) merge to form a Metropolitan City. The Sedibeng District Municipality is run by the African National Congress (ANC) who through its regional secretary, Bob Mthembu, said during the MDB meeting last month that the merger will bring speedy service delivery and cut costs that are currently being exhausted in the existing municipalities.

A member of the community who attended the event on Friday says, “We were basically called in to pray for the merger to run through easily and there were priests, pastors, bishops and reverends -you name them- who prayed for the Mayor.”The whole process of consultation and deliberation about the proposed merger is expected to be finished by August this year to allow the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to prepare for next year’s national elections in terms of determining borders.
they become. We are not going anywhere but downhill and the morals of the majority are degenerating. Where is the protection of women and children in this matter? There are perverts, rapists and hard-core human abusers out there who are waiting with green eyes to exploit the situation and I believe (yes, I believe) they now have a leg to stand on; they have after all been given the material to pursue their illicit activities, haven’t they? I fail to fathom how the government can have other stringent laws against the public, while failing to see that allowing the broadcast of pornographic material on TV will bring nothing but decay

to communities, particularly to the inquisitive youth who are already up to their necks in insidiously creeping death what with nyaope, unemployment, early pregnancies and lack of education high on the list. The more things change, the worse they become in South Africa, democratic or not. Yes, a lot of people do have access to pornography via other mediums but is official approval necessary? Sies! As Dr Isak Burger, President of the Apostolic Faith Mission, writes in one of the Sunday newspapers. ‘It is ironic that many proponents of freedom of choice will object to the pollution of the environment but ignore and even support blatant pollution of the minds of men, women and children.” Now you tell me if things are changing or becoming worse. VANDERBJILPARK. - Women from Sharpeville and Vanderbjilpark initiated a cleaning programme on Monday morning when they began to clean the illegal dumpsites in Van-
derbjilpark. Basadi Ikemeleng General Trading Co-operative began last year in April after Government encouraged the forming of co-operatives. “Our main objective is to obtain land for plantation so that employment can be created and the poor can be fed, says chairperson of Basadi Ikemeleng Thalitha Jona. She adds that it has been a lengthy wait for the land to be obtained so they decided to - instead of sitting and doing nothing - be the change they want to see in the community.

Football is not a matter of life and death! SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale They say football is not a matter of life and death! Agree! It was a shame to see a player assaulting referee Kgotso Makuna during the Aaron Mokoena Mbazo Lounge Soccer Tournament at Boipatong Stadium on Saturday. A
player nogal! Who do you think should be blamed - the player or his coach/management? You tell me! Look, coaches are role models to players and whatever coaches do they copy – whether it’s good or bad, right or wrong. The question Shooting From The Hip is asking is: are we developing soccer players or monsters? As much as the player showed remorse after the incident, this must be a lesson to him and his teammates. He must thank Shooting From The Hip and other officials at the venue, because even the soccer fans bayed for his blood. He deserved it! This is hooliganism to say the least. It was something encouraging to see soccer fans protecting the referee because - in most cases –
they are the ones who always find themselves on the wrong side of the law when it comes to match officiating. But this time around they stood with the referee. Interesting enough, these are the soccer fans to whom Shooting From The Hip paid homage in last week’s column. Like I said: these are the people who should be honoured for defending the reputation of the ‘beautiful game’. How can you assault a match official over a tournament that doesn’t even have money. The winner would have received a trophy, medals and soccer kits. Is someone really prepared to die for these prizes? Is somebody’s life cheaper than soccer kits, a trophy and medals? Come on somebody - say something! The problem with our football is that the de-
Buti Maqabe told Sedibeng Ster Sport that he not only conquered the tournament but the entire Sedibeng. He says this is the result of the hard work they put into training when they prepared for this tournament. He says not many people gave them a chance before the tournament but his spirited club has proven them wrong. Some of the teams that Vaal Dojo Karate Club competed against were from as far afield as Thokoza, Springs, Katlehong, Germiston, Sasolburg and other regions.
“We want to thank all the people who came to support this tournament. From the bottom of my heart I want to say we appreciated your support. I also wish to thank Sedibeng Ster for publicising this tournament. The Boipatong community was packed to capacity,” he concludes.

BOIPATONG. - Vaal Dojo Karate Club swept the trophy table clean during the Kyokushinkai-Matsushima Karate Tournament at Boipatong Hall recently. The day belonged to this Zone 11-based karate club when their u/13 division swept everything to be crowned champions in their respective divisions. The Vaal Dojo Karate Club u/10 were named Best Fighters of the Tournament. The jubilant Vaal Dojo Karate Club Sensei
velopment coaches have taught these players to win at all cost. This is the result of such a mind fix. These players need to be educated because some of them don’t know the implications of their actions. I don’t think he would achieve his dream to play at the highest level - if that is his dream. I wish he could simply rot in the dusty streets of Sharpeville. It is where you deserve to be unless you come and apologise to Mr Makuna. The next question will be: what is the team going to do with the player? Will any disciplinary action be taken against him? I can’t wait to hear what action the club will be taking against this ‘monster’.

Local soccerites expect thrilling action Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - Boipatong will be divided into two parts when Liverpool FC and Young Stars FC clash in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League derby. This much-talked-about town derby is scheduled to take place at the bumpy Boipatong Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff time is 15:00. This is one game that promises to produce fireworks with both sides looking for nothing but maximum points. Liverpool FC is one of the league contenders while Young Stars are desperate to leave the bottom of the log. This is also why this encounter will produce fireworks come Saturday. For Stars it’s survival of the fittest but for Liverpool FC it’s more about the championship than anything else. Vaal Development Academy hosts Nale Academy in another Vaal Milling Promotion top-of-the-table clash. It also promises to be a ‘humdinger’ at the same venue on Sunday. Kickoff time is 13:00. The game will play as a curtain-raiser to the SAB Regional League match between The Birds and Mighty Blues FC. Nale Academy come into the Saturday en-
counter after suffering a 4-2 defeat at the hands of experienced Sebokeng Ajax FC at Shakespeare Stadium over the weekend, while Vaal Development is fresh from a 1-0 win over Young Milano FC. VUT FC are stealing, topping the log with Sebokeng Ajax second and Nale Academy third. Elsewhere, Vereeniging Old Boys welcome The Birds FC in another Promotion League affair scheduled to take place at Roshnee Stadium on Friday night. Vaal Stars FC will be home against Young Milano FC at the Bophelong Stadium on Saturday. Sebokeng Ajax FC will have no problem collecting maximum points when they host the struggling Vaal Manchester FC at Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday while bottom-of-the-log MBC FC is expected to donate another three points when they clash against top-of-the-log VUT FC at George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. In stream B, Roshnee FC welcomes Zone 10 United FC at Roshnee Stadium on Friday night. Roots Mighty Boys will lock horns with City Stars at Zone 15 on Saturday while Sebokeng Academy hosts West Ham FC at the Zone 3 Stadium on the same day. EYA FC will battle it out against Moropodi FC at Zone 7 Stadium on Saturday.
