ROSHNEE. - The Gauteng Provisional Commissioner for Police Lt General Lesetja Mothiba appealed for a crime-free festive season during the launch of Operation ‘When Duty Calls.’ Gauteng cluster commanders, commissioners as well as the Community Policing Forum graced the occasion on November 28. The event was hosted in the Sedibeng region’s Roshnee sports ground. Commissioner Mothiba was joined by the MEC for Public Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malebane, Vereeniging cluster commander, Brigadier Pule

Mokoena, Gauteng CPF head Anvy Mashile, Emfuleni MMC for Public Safety Velly Mcera. In his welcome address, the acting mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Councillor Mcera, on behalf of Executive Mayor Gretha Hlongwane, confirmed a positive working relationship between the police, youth desk, crime prevention desk and other stakeholders through the Emfuleni Community Stakeholders’ Forum. Councillor Mcera said he had been informed by Gauteng to maintain good platforms of communication from which to dis-

cuss crime or programmes to address incidents. “We have victim support centres at all stations to assist with the victims of crime,” says Cllr Mcera and adds that they are in a process that embarks on launching street-committees as the eyes and ears of the government. “There’s a need to help understand the community at large,” he said. Lt Gen Mothiba appealed to the communities and stakeholders to work together with the police to combat crime, especially during the festive season. Operation ‘When duty calls’, which started October 30, will run un-

til January 10 of 2015. “I hope this will go down well with the communities at large,’ he said. The Gauteng MEC for Public Safety Nkosi-Malebana emphasised that residents should enjoy the festive season with care. She appealed also to motorists to look out for pedestrians on the road. The police indicated that road blocks will be conducted all over the province even after the festive season. “We do not want to see the rate of road fatalities increase. This can be done through the help of the community and motorists,” she said.

SEBOKENG. – It is alleged that one out of every two people in the world living with HIV/Aids do not know they have it. This was revealed on World Aids Day. It was a great and well-conducted march organised at the Zone 3 Clinic. They took the street by storm marching to show support as they showcased awareness against HIV and Aids in conjunction with 16 Days of Ac-

tivism against the abuse of women and children. The march around Zone 3 was embarked on to issue condoms, pamphlets and inform and educate the community about the killer disease. Sister Moleleki, organiser of the event and WBOT (Ward Based Outreach Team) leader, said the march was aimed at informing and educating the community about the stigma surrounding HIV and Aids.

“We don’t only implement HIV/Aids awareness in December but throughout the year with teams like WBOT visiting victims of HIV/Aids attended to in the comfort of their homes, where pills are distributed and patients are reminded of their appointments with doctors,” says Moleleki. Khali Vilakazi says, “Our work is to reach everyone in the community. We teach them about HIV.”

The house from which Dimakatso Selelani was evicted.

Old woman kicked out onto street Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. - An asthmatic old woman, Dimakatso Selelani, was evicted from the house she was bought by herchild Tsediso Mtimkulu. The house

is situated in Tshepiso Phase 1. The eviction took place on Wednesday morning, residents were shocked by the old woman’s plight. The owner of the house who asked not to be identified claims that he summonsed Mtimkulu to the issue of the house 9 years ago. “I have taken them to court several times arguing that this is my house. I have all the necessary documents to support my statement,” says the owner as he asked everyone to move out of the yard. Mtimkulu says he bought the house from Tatolo Radebe 14 years ago. However, when Sedibeng Ster tried to contact Radebe he was out of reach. Mtimkulu only produced documents of rates and taxes without the title deed while the evicter says he has the title. The self-proclaimed house owner’s meeting resulted in a verbal war between the evicter and Mtimkulu. While the two locked horns, shouting at one another, Selelani became overwrought and had to urgently use her asthmatic spray. She was given food by neighbours since she had to take her medication. Mtimkulu says the place was an empty stand and as the years went by houses were

built. “We have been living here for 14 years and bought the place with nine thousand rand (R9 000),” says Mtimkulu. He further produced documents that might

constitute proof that he bought the stand from Radebe. Although his property was removed by gathered members of the community.

Taxi violence claims two lives lets when two hired security guards opened fire on each other and all hell broke loose. The death of the two security guards happened at the taxi rank just outside the mall. Fifteen people were subsequently arrested and a staggering 100 cartridges were found at the scene. Police respondents managed to calm the situation down. Police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifiwa Mitileni says, “Guards from rival security companies - both employed by a taxi association - had been trading gunfire. The shooting occurred near the Palm Springs Shopping Mall. “When we came out of our houses we saw dead people lying around. We could not un-

PALM SPRINGS. - 15 people were arrested by police and three were injured during a shootout while two security guards were declared deceased at the scene at Palm Springs Mall on Saturday morning. The shootout did not come as a shock. Four people were killed in August due to taxi violence. Residents say they are not going to tolerate the violence that is putting their lives in danger. The reason for the shootout is alleged to be a long ongoing issue of taxi rivalry. This has killed many over the years and now is getting out of hand. Two security guards died in a hail of bul-

VUT awards employers

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Themed “10 years as a university of technology - lessons learned” the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has crafted a new vision to lead by innovative knowledge and quality technology. This embraces producing top-drawer, employable graduates to impact and develop society in Africa and beyond. “Education is the best shield against discrimination, exploitation, oppression, poverty and other forms of malady affecting society,” said Kediemetsi Mokotsi, VUT director of Marketing and Public Relations. She was speaking on behalf of vice chancellor and principal Professor Irene Moutlana at the annual Employer Function Awards to 12 partners. The function was hosted at the Riverside Sun Hotel on November 28. “If you cannot reach your destination, do not blame others,” she said. She said education is a precious gift parents can bequeath on their children. Thanks should go to the support received from the stakeholders and everyone. Annie Moletsane, director for Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) said about 48 students have been recruited by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). About 16 175 students have been placed since 20072014. Moletsane said they have indeed cultivated a new partnership with SANDF and Ministry of Defence promoting the recruitment of students for careers within the defence force. At least 441 students were placed on campus to complete their WIL in order to make it possible for them to graduate. The VUT is proud to work with international and local partnerships. This year’s two slogans ‘10 years sparks off possibilities’ and ‘50 years

of building your world to a better future’ reflects on the journey that the university has undertaken over the years from a new to a mature University of Technology, and how it has grown in stature since its inception in 1966. thanked the partners for doing a good job: “The institution is used to help students package information that will be used. You have to determine whether you want to reach tomorrow. It is that time of the year when our focus will be on township tournaments and local soccer fans will spend their holidays at dusty soccer grounds all over the country. The Absa Premiership will be on break and the only form of entertainment for soccer fans will be those township tournaments as is the tradition at this time of year. But the win-at-allcosts mentality spoils these talk-of-the-town tournaments.

SEDIBENG STER

Play at your own risk! This is because coaches or club owners’ promise these youngsters they will be paid if they win the tournament. The other sad scenario is that professional soccer players make themselves part of this tournament to be the centre of attention. For the past ten years, we have tried to address this situation, but it seems as if the plea falls on deaf ears. The question remains: why do professional soccer players play in these township tournaments when they have been given a break to rest? Sedibeng Ster has seen players lose their PSL contracts because of these tournaments and some of these players then live their lives

in regret. It is painful when Shooting From The Hip recalls how some of them used to be household names in South African football. In fact, today they are nothing in the eyes of the very soccer fans who used to cheer them on as they played in those unorganised soccer tournaments. Sedibeng Ster always maintains that the only thing these professional soccer players should do is conduct coaching clinics for youngsters during the tournament. The tournament can use them to promote football rather than competing with these youngsters, who regard them as role models. It doesn’t make sense to Sedibeng Ster that an

5

amateur competes against a professional soccer player for R20 000 prize money. Really! As if this is not enough – in most cases, teams that win these tournaments do not belong to football structures. No, they are socalled `squads’ or makeshift soccer teams comprising professional soccer players, and include those who retired prematurely from football. This time of year also brings forth only one desire - the desire to make money. Now you know why our football is in such a crisis in this region. * Sedibeng Ster staff wish News Editor Lerato Serero a speedy recovery as he is currently hospitalised.

Sterling sewerage work - Mofomme

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - It is not true that the Emfuleni Sewer Reticulation System is one of the pollution threats to the district river system. This is allegedly through e-coli and other pathogens from raw or poorly treated sewage. The municipality acknowledges that the ageing infrastructure poses a challenge in relation to the reticulation system. Emfuleni spokesperson Klaas Mofomme said, “It is not true that pipe-bursts are not noticed or attended to. The maintenance team ensures that there are regular checks on the system to avoid situations where a large amount of

sewage finds its way to the Vaal River,” he said. The municipality does have its own maintenance staff at the Waste Water Care Works, (WWCW). All WWCW staff at Leeuwkuil, Rietspruit and Sebokeng operate around the clock to ensure that wastewater is treated to acceptable standards. “Both Leeuwkuil and Rietspruit Works have an electrician, a fitter, two fitter assistants, an electrical foreman and a mechanical foreman. It is supported by a millwright (an electrical/mechanical fitter) provided by Rand Water Bulk Sanitation Department as part of our Service Level & Management

Agreement, which was extended in September 2009 for 5 years, then extended by one year ending June 2015. Sebokeng WWCW’s maintenance team comprises an electrician, two fitters, one fitter assistant, an electrical foreman and a mechanical foreman. Rand Water provides 2 millwrights. “For 2013/2014, we achieved effluent compliance: Leeuwkuil – 97%, Rietspruit – 85%, Sebokeng – 97%. The municipality is faced with some challenges in relation to wastewater treatment due to new property development in the area. In Rietspruit, an environmental impact assessment has been conducted to construct a 36-megalitre perday emergency dam, an additional clarifier,

a chlorine contact tank and a new final effluent discharge point,” Moffomme said. He added that they await the approval of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant application that was submitted for this project. Sebokeng WWCW is in the process of being upgraded with two additional modules of 50 megalitres per day each. The project is funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation and Rand Water. Construction started in 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2016. The Emfuleni Sewer Reticulation System will improve and be able to handle the strain that the plants experience as a result of new property development and other factors.

Mafisa family’s prayers answered Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The Mafisa Family from Zone 7 has expressed their gratitude to the people who have contributed in making it possible for them to live in a newly built home. In October 2013, 23-year-old Mohau Mafisa requested the help of the community to rebuild his home that he and his siblings lost due to a fire which was caused by an electrical fault. “I now live in a small outside room and have lived here ever since our house burned down. My sister has had to move out because it would not be proper for her to live in the outside rooms with us. I would like to make a plea to anyone who will be able to turn the damaged house into a home for us again.” Mohau’s plea was answered. Emfuleni

Local Municipality (ELM) Executive Mayor Councillor Greta Hlongwane blessed the Mafisa family with her presence at the reopening of their renovated home. During the official hand-over the mayor said, “This house belongs to the Mafisa family and no one will take it away from them. The community has been doing an amazing job by keeping an eye on these children.” Portia Mafisa says, “I am very grateful to the community for making it

possible for us to have a roof over our heads. We were struggling and they made sure that our dream of renovating the house comes true. We are also very happy that the mayor decided to spend her birthday with us.” During this event the mayor also took time and celebrated her birthday with the Zone 7 community, especially the young kids who had some cake and sang for her. ELM Executive Mayor Councillor Greta Hlong wane gave a heartfelt speech at the recent offici al house handover in Zo ne 7.

Thabong Shopping Centre opens new stores SEBOKENG. - Thabong Shopping Centre last week saw the biggest crowd of people as it opened new stores such as Woolworths, Skipper Bar, Jam Clothing, Foschini, Edgars, John Graig, Studio88, and more. Residents were delighted to see the

shopping centre bringing new and very much needed stores closer to their residential area. Some residents even opine that the centre is slowly transforming into a shopping mall. One resident who came to do his shopping on Saturday was Teboho Mokoena. He says,

Thabong Shopping Center embarked on a new venture by ope ning some of the most popular retail stores. Some of the people present at the opening were, from left, Ward 17 Councillor Mthunzimele Sikukula, Nompi Tjale (Ward 2), SANCO deputy se cretary and Thabong Centre manager Elijah Moremi.

“We are always happy when popular retailers come to shopping centres near us. This shows us that the locals are slowly being elevated and developed.” Mokoena adds that another important element is that of job creation, which is always sparked by such deve-

lopments. Centre manager Elijah Moremi says, “We are delighted to see this centre expand to suit the vast needs of the different consumers . Today we will also see a new Miss Thabong Shopping Centre being crowned,” Moremi concludes.

The cherry on top was the newly crowned Miss Thabong Shopping Centre. From left are Miss Personality Karabo Khaalo, 1st Princess Kelina Sethole, Miss Thabong Shopping Centre Kgomotso Devenhuis and 2nd Princess Lisbeth Mokoena.

A visit from Netherlands People from Kinderplein Korein, Eindhoven in the Netherlands, visited the Rekaofela and Siyanqo ba Day Care Centre Association in Evaton West. The visit was to learn more about how the local preschools operate. A sevenweek tour saw the visitors donating toys in collaboration with the lottery to the principals of crèches on November 26. New house for Juili’s family Mduduzi Mathebula

TSHEPISO. - All praise goes to Teboho Motsepe, the hero who saved wheelchair-bound Martha Juili when she was trapped in a mystery fire a month ago. Many attended the opening of the new and rebuilt home of Juili on Tuesday at Tshepiso phase 1. This was after she and her siblings had been rendered homeless by the mystery fire, which destroyed everything they had. Vaal Echoers of Love and Heaven for Disabled Persons were also thanked. “We don’t know what happened but I smelled the smoke and found myself coughing. I then started to scream for help. I asked my younger sister to call Teboho who came and saved me from the violent fire,” says Juili. The hero, Matsepe says he did not think twice. “All I thought of was Juili’s life and the lives of her sisters. I broke the window and climb

through, all the while screaming their names. I Thank God that he helped me to rescue them,” says Motsepe. MMC for Health and Social Recreation Sello Pitso quoted from the Bible (Luke 6: 36). He further thanked the community for giving and helping the family of Juili. “Love starts with loving yourself and your neighbour. I’m very touched by what the community has done,” says Pitso. Sello Sehake, the man behind the idea to rebuild Juili’s family house, acknowledged all those who took part in making the rebuilding a success. Teboho Matsepe, Malidi Molefe, Pastor Vilakazi, Oupa Sefatsa (neighbour) andNokhanya Ndungelwa - all these people dedicated themselves to helping Juili in her time of need. Juili and her sister were handed new furniture. Juili was emotional and touched by the community’s love as she was handed the key to her new house.

Ikusasa reconstructing intersections in Sasolburg Two intersections in Sasolburg will be reconstructed to improve road safety in the area. The Sasol community investment project, Ikusasa, has started construction work on two busy intersections in Bergius Road in the Sasolburg industrial area. Work started on 17 November 2014 in Bunsen Street, but the whole project is expected to be completed by 12 May 2015.

surface seal. Traffic lights will be installed at this intersection to improve safety.

Bergius Road and Bunsen street intersection

As soon as work starts in Bergius Road, the double lanes will be converted to a single lane to grant access to industries in the area that would be inaccessible if both lanes had to be closed. Traffic marshals will be on site to assist motorists in the area.

At the Bergius Road/Bunsen Street intersection an area of 4 080 m2 is being reconstructed. Work involves building a new structural supporting layer, kerbing and adding an asphalt surface seal. According to the project manager, Elmarie Botha, “an additional dedicated slip lane is being added to mitigate risk for vehicles traveling from east to west and entering Bunsen Street from Bergius Road. In addition, a 45 m service culvert will be installed to assist existing and future road crossings.” Proposed safe making of Eric Louw/Bergius Road intersection Construction work at the Eric Louw/Bergius Road intersection is expected to start on 12 January 2015, to be completed by 12 May 2015. The 3 750 m area at the intersection will also receive new structural supporting layer works, kerbing and an asphalt 2

Impact on motorists Construction work is currently impacting motorists in Bunsen Street where the slip lane is being built.

In the interest of road safety “Safety is a priority at Sasol and improving road safety for our community around our operational facilities, is thus equally important,” says Sasolburg Operations Senior Vice President, Louis Fourie. However, improving road conditions would be futile if we don’t drive safely. “Especially during this time of the year when we spend more time on the road than usual, we should make a concerted effort to stick to the basic road safety rules of keeping to the speed limit, getting enough rest during a road trip, and most importantly, buckling up,” continues Fourie. “I would like to wish all Metsimaholo residents a deserved rest over the December holidays, but above all, a safe time to spend with our loved-ones,” says Fourie.

Sport at its best Jomo Cosmos looks set to return to their Absa Pre miership status after beating Royal Eagles 2 0 in the National First Division League match played at the Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

Vaal happy hunting ground for Ezenkosi - Sono

Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Jomo Cosmos, otherwise known as Ezenkosi, is set to return to Absa Premier Soccer League status. Ezenkosi is at the summit of the National First Division League’s log standing. This was after they beat Royal Eagles FC in the entertaining National First Division League match played at the Isak Steyl’s Stadium over the weekend. The excited Cosmos boss – Jomo Sono says Vaal is a happy hunting ground for Ezenkosi, taking into consideration that two seasons ago they played their National First Division League matches here in the Vaal

when they were promoted to top-flight football. Cosmos is at the summit of the National First Division log with 26 points from 13 outings. They played 7 draws and lost one game. However, hot on their heels is Milano United FC with 24 points from the same number of games as Cosmos. Golden Arrows is third on the log with the same number of points as second-placed Milano United FC, only separated by goal differences. Cosmos will travel to Durban to have a date with the fourth-placed Thando Royal FC in the National First Division League fixture

scheduled to take place at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex on Saturday. It seems as if promotion candidates will be between Jomo Cosmos, Milano United FC, Golden Arrows FC and Thanda Royal, if their current performance is anything to go by. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports after the game, Cosmos boss and coach Jomo Sono said there is still a long way to go before they can start celebrating. He believes the league is still wide open and the best his team can do is continue to collect maximum points, especially when they play at home. However, Sono was concerned with the

number of chances they created but failed to convert into goals. It was the same old story over the weekend with Cosmos strikers missing golden opportunities with only the goalkeeper to beat. “It is too early to think of winning the league because the league is a marathon and the only favour we could do ourselves is collect as many maximum points as we can, especially in the first round of the league. But I’m very happy with our performance after a slow start to the season. We will approach each and every game as it comes. We are not going to put ourselves under any pressure because the season is still long,” he concluded.

Golf tournament marks ten-year anniversary Zacharia Nale

staged in this region and attracts the who’s who of politics and government. Some highprofilers expected to grace the occasion include government officials and mayors from both municipalities. With the tournament

marking 10 years, organisers promise plenty of prizes to be won by individuals on the day of the event. The day’s programme is set to kick off at 10:00 and participants are advised to arrive on time.
