Twins perish in fire Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - The basic instincts of mothers is to protect their young but for a young Boitumelo, Sebokeng, mother this came at a hefty price. The 21-year-old mother, Vuyo Thekiso, suffered severe firstdegree burns in the early hours of the morning on Friday when her family’s outside shack went up in flames. She died on Sunday at the Sebokeng Hospital. Her twins Bonolo and Bokamoso had already succumbed to death following the mystery

fire. They had been with her in the shack. The two brothers were almost two years old says a family member, adding that they do not know the cause of the fire. Lydia Raditsela, the twins’ 51-year-old grandmother, says the fire is a disastrous blow to the family. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Raditsela says, “Their mother suffered the most and she finally gave in and died on Sunday while we were thinking she was improving. She herself hoped to at least send her last wishes to her children at their funeral.” Thekiso was a caregiver and

a real martyr. She sacrificed her life for others. She was a member of the Boitumelo Community Organization (BCO) NGO and the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) . “We have lost a soldier and a real heroine. May her soul rest in peace,” concludes Kenny Mokoena, the Deputy Chairperson of BCO. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkhulu says that they have opened an inquest docket. “ We are still puzzled by the incident and we are investigating he cause of the fire,” he says.

Healers on the march Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. - Sedibeng Traditional Health Practitioners mounted a huge traditional march that shocked many shoppers in Vereeniging on Thursday. The march was part of celebrating African Traditional Medicine Week and the event was graced by Sedibeng District Municipality MMC of Health and Social Development Melina Gomba and Traditional Healers Coordinator Debra Mothuping. The celebration was to raise awareness and promote traditional medicine within the society and to further motivate practitioners to recognise the need to ensure a high standard of conduct and practice in the traditional health sector. Traditional Healers’ chairperson Nthwalo Matshediso says that this is the beginning of a new era to reconstruct traditional practice and to make it understood to western medical practitioners.

SHARPEVILLE. - “Mama Adelaide Tambo passed away long ago, but we will never forget her good deeds. Her brave, lionessheart remains. Sharpeville history. can not be complete without her. We are very proud of her.” These are the words of a family representative during the Adelaide Tambo memorial lecture on Thursday at the Sharpeville Hall. Tambo was one of the veterans that took the struggle days by storm. The packed Sharpeville Hall could barely contain the emotions expressed by speakers on such an exceptional woman. Speaking on behalf of the ANC Women’s League and the National Government Basic Education minister Angie Motshega spoke prolifically about Tambo. Motshega urged young women to join the women’s league because it was not just for elderly women but for all women in general. “If young women don’t start affiliating with the structures of the African National Congress, who will?” We need to know what the past generation has done to protect the future. We would not cherish their deeds if history was not written.” said Motshega. The memorial lecture was part of the Sedibeng District Municipality’s Women’s Month celebration programme.

VEREENIGING. – The cold weekend weather could not stop the youth of this area from attending the mother of all yearly parties. On Saturday afternoon young Sedibeng people flocked to the Dick Fourie Stadium to attend the Vaal Beach Party which forms part of the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s Vaal River Carnival. Although no serious incidents were officially reported, youth (Izikhothane, Mamilano, Mabhujwa and Bom’rapper) could be seen with cigarrettes and booze at hand. A park-and-ride was organised at the President Park Stadium in Vereening where the youth could be seen in their best attire dancing their souls away. According to event organiser Isaac Masia the main aim of including the park and ride was to control the traffic jam and prevent car theft and crime. “ The park-and- ride section was watched by security guards who were on alert 24 hours,” said Masia. Most performers went ‘crazy’ on stage and fans shouted for their favourite artists throughout the night at the main venue at Dick Fourie Stadium in Three Rivers. Police spokesperson Constable Teduso Tsotetsi said they deployed considerable enforcement throughout Vereeniging and had not received any reports of crimes. He further mentioned that the only problem was that the young people had turned the park-and-rider area into an alternative party place.

Boyfriend wanted for murder Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - An allegedly jealous suspect is on the run after he allegedly used a knife to stab to death his girlfriend in Muvhango, Extension 8 over the weekend. Police spokesperson Constable Gertrude Makhale said a case of murder is being investigated. It is not clear what led to the murder of Mapule Melato. The deceased was admitted at the local hospital with several

stab wounds on Saturday and died the following day. The suspect is known only as Papi Sibeko of Zone 3, Sebokeng. Members of the community say that he works at one of the steel factories in Vanderbijlpark. The deceased was working at Checkers Vanderbijlpark. At time of going to print police were busy gathering information that might lead to the whereabouts and arrest of the suspect.

BOIPATONG. - The murderer of the late Yvonne Msibi (23) was strongly condemned recently by Emfuleni Local Municipality Health MMC Councillor Sello Pitso and Sello Maetso, the Regional Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP). Maetso says he wishes that police would parade criminals before the community as this would minimise such brutal killings. Msibi was recently gagged, strangled and left dead in a buthtub full of water in Extension 1, Bophelong. At-

tending the funeral service held at the Boipatong Community Hall recently, Pitso labelled people who perpetrated deeds like this as real cowards. The deceased was attacked while she was alone at home during the day. It was hardly two weeks after the owner of the house, Florah Matsaneng, had asked Msibi’s parents of Winnie’s Park, Boipatong, if she could come and stay with her. Matsaneng did all in her power to make sure that the deceased received a decent funeral service with the help of Pitso’s office and the JMB undertaker.

Don’t give up Lerato Serero News Editor Comments

‘If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again’. I was infuriated this past week by someone who tells me that they have given up on life. What annoys me is that this person is young and still has his whole life ahead of him and he has already ‘given up’ - only because things have not been going his way for a while. I tell him that when things go wrong as they always will, when the road seems uphill, as it always will, when funds are low and debts are high, he must rest if he so wishes, but quitting is totally out of the question. I tell him that life is perplexing,

that it has twists and turns and that and everyone learns through hardship sometimes, but he should never give up. ‘A coward dies many times before actual death’, so I tell him he must never be one. I also tell this young fellow that giving up is not an option and that he must keep on fighting as he will only have failed when he gives up, that if he thinks he is beaten, he is, that if he would like to overcome the situation and thinks he can’t, he won’t, and that if he thinks he will lose the battle, he has already lost. After all, it is all in the mind. If this young chap thinks that he is outclassed, he is indeed. Finally I ran out of words but as the saying goes - ‘the ball is in his court’. My parting words to him were that he has got to be sure of himself if ever he wants to obtain the eventual award and that life’s battles do not always favour the strong or faster person, but sooner or later the man who wins is the one who thinks he can. ‘Phusha, Presa, Phanda’ Lerato...

New Midvaal Mayor Lerato Serero

MEYERTON.- Following the recent resignation of Timothy Nast as mayor of Midvaal Local Municipality one of the youngest mayors in the country - Bongani Baloyi - was inaugurated as Midvaals’ new mayor last Thursday. Previously MMC for Development and Planning, Baloyi says that he is confident that he will rise to the task of leading and serving Midvaal. “Residents can rest assured that stability and continuity will be maintained through my transition to new Mayor, and there will be no disruptions to the daily functioning of Midvaal. I am committed to upholding these values of Midvaal, to driving business development, as well as entrenching the need for inclusive economic growth, which allows our poor communities like Sicelo and Lakeside to progress along with businesses and investors. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind as Midvaal expands its economy.” “Young people often say they would like to “make a change”,or be given an opportunity to make an impact on the world around them. As I stand here tonight, having been elected Mayor of Midvaal, I realise that I am now lucky enough to be a young person who has been given the ultimate chance to do exac-

tly that - to make a change,” says Baloyi in a statement. Baloyi’s appointment comes at a crucial time when the issue of a merger between the four municipalities in the area to form a metro of Sedibeng District Municipality, Lesedi Local Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality and Midvaal Local Municipality, is at a critical stage.

Bongani Baloyi replaces Timothy Nast who recently resigned as mayor of the Midvaal Local Municipality.

ELM’s money scam busted wide open Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Emfuleni Local Municipality Internal Investigation Unit recently arrested eight prominent social workers involved in fraud for assisting non beneficiaries to collect government social

grant money. The suspects appeared briefly for a disciplinary hearing last week. The case has been postponed for further investigation, said Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni Local Municipality head of communication. Gaba told Sedibeng Ster that the police are still battling to

gather more information that could add to the number of offenders and lead to more arrests. Reliable Sedibeng Ster sources within the municipality say that police acted swiftly after some of the culprits boasted to friends about how they were milking the government. Ap-

parently co-workers blew the whistle on them. Some of the ghost beneficiaries include well known educators, professional nurses and police officials. Apparently the agreement was that the helper received half the amount paid out to the ghost beneficiary.

from the Barrage road towards Parys. When we came here we expected change,” said some of the community members who did not want to be mentioned. After a surprise visit by DA MPL Jack Bloom, who spent the night in a cold, three-room shack, residents said they were under the impression that soon and very soon - things would change for the better. There’s no hope that one day rural people will enjoy the liberation-fruit for which they fought so hard,” the residents say. Another informal settlements that seems to have been totally forgotten is Joko Tea near the Golden Highway, Tennis Court behind Tsolo Secondary School and Coal Site on Dube Road all in Bophelong alone.

THE BARRAGE. – ‘A better life for all’, but the residents of the Barrage informal settlement believe they must have missed the train when it comes to service delivery. Rural communities say they are living in fear, not sure whether they should waste more time queuing during next year’s general elections. They went on further to praise the Department of Home Affairs for helping them obtain new Identity Books and the Department of Social Services for providing food parcels. The residents tell Sedibeng Ster that they were moved out near the bank of Vaal River seven or five years ago fearing for heavy rains. “We were brought on the nose of the South African Police station few meters away

Medicine for good health hahaha!

Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENGING. - It has been scientifically proven that laughter improves ones health. Vaal comedy-lovers were treated to a really outstanding showcase on Thursday night at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre - the Emfuleni Vaal Carnival Comedy Show. The show included local artists the likes

of ‘Wazz’, Jabulani and Thabiso. These young up-coming comedians showed class and progress in comparison to their previous shows. Then the big guns were unleashed on the stage. These included the MC - Tips - who killed the audience from start to finish with laughter. Among dignitaries were MMC for Sports and Recreation, and Shaka Radebe

who was blown out of his seat. The show was redeemed by Skhumbuzo Hlophe who plainly didn’t care what people thought of his jokes. Hlophe spent five minutes on stage and left his audience howling their lungs out. “I’m very pleased to perform at such an occasion and for the ELM to believe in us

as artists is a great honour,” explained Hlophe. He believes that in black comedy South Africans are starting to accept themselves and their indigenous cultures. The show was concluded by Limpopian comedian Mashabela. “It’s about time. The time has come for black comedy to rise to the people,” says the SATMA award nominee.

Ncingane does it for the community Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Daniel Zengele, after 13 wheelchair-bound years, finally received a wheelchair of his own recently from a man named Jerry Ncingane who is also disabled. Ever since he was born Ncingane has been wheelchair bound, yet he has been a youth and community leader. He challenges disabled young people to participate in sport and arts. An event was conducted, attended by the Ward 37 leaders and councillor Lahliwe Rapapadi. According to Zengele he was unable to walk after he was mutilated 13 years ago. “It featured the toughest decision I had to make in my life. “I used to do everything myself, and then I had to ask for help when I needed something. “Being in a wheelchair is not child’s play. It’s a very challenging lifestyle. “I had a hard time adapting to the new lifestyle,” says Zengele who was using a borrowed wheelchair all these years. Zengele was delighted to have his own wheelchair, he even made some moves in the chair. “I am very happy. God bless Ncingane for the love he shared with the wheelchairbound community. Many people hide behind closed doors due to their disability. “Through Ncingane young people and his community are are coming out,” says Zengele. Rapapadi says she is very honoured to have such a community leader looking after them. “Ncingane is a true leader. “We need such people in our community, people who put others first, I’m very happy with his efforts to help others,” says Rapapadi. Ncingane says all he wants is for young people to engage in productive operations.

Burnt house refurbished Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE.- ‘Build It’, Vanderbijlpark and Lekoa Construction put a smile on 75-year-old Maria Moletsane’s face when they refurbished her house. Following a story in this publication, Hlongwane approached Lekoa Construction who approached Ismail Kader of ‘Build It’ Vanderbijlpark, who gladly accepted the challenge. ‘Build It’ then provided the material to fix the burnt home and Lekoa Construction, the labour. Kader says, “The motivation to help Maria Moletsane was to see an ailing old lady settled in her own home and to promote a sense of responsibility amongst the youth in the area to take care of their frail and old.” ‘Build It’ has always been involved in the community from its inception in 2011,” adds Kader. ‘Build it’ also hosted a 16-a-side under-13 school soccer tournament to uplift schools to a new level of participation. ‘Build it’ will also help in the new year when a similar tournament is hosted. The hope is to make this a yearly event. .

Maria Moletsane (middle) was more than excited by the help she received from ‘Build It’, Vanderbijlpark, and Lekoa Construction.

SEDIBENG. – eTV eKasi stories has paved a way for local productions to generate their untested talent onto South Africans’ TV screens. Such projects have been on the go for a season now, and numerous talented actors and new producers are showing their intentions through such opportunities to cultivate the entertainment industry. Luzuko Nteleko is a South African actor and entrepreneur best known for his television roles as Loyiso on Zone 14 (since 2010). His profile speaks volumes. He was student Constable Lebogang Chuene on ‘The streets of Mangaung’, a story that was filmed in 2012. He will be playing a lead character on eKasi story: Our Stories, in the drama ‘Strooi Meisier’, to be featured soon. Having studied at Wits Tech, Nteleko now owns an educational/ industrial theatre and promotions company. He is multilingual, speaking Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Xitsonga and English. Originally from Sebokeng, Gauteng, he now resides in Johannesburg. According to Nteleko, ‘Strooi Meisie’ is a story of childhood friends who shared similar hopes and dreams. All of that changed when ‘Thandi’ got a scholarship to UCT and moved away. Now, ‘Tshepo’ makes ends meet any way he can, taking odd jobs and collecting rejection slips from publishers as he tries to make it. ‘Thandi’ meets, and agrees to marry John Mthembu, a wealthy young man from a powerful family. ‘Tshepo’ has to deal with the anguish of watching the woman he secretly loves pledge herself to an arrogant ‘cheese boy’ who doesn’t deserve her. ‘Thandi’ starts to realise that maybe she rushed into things with John. Can they find a `happily ever after’, or will those childhood dreams become a mere memory? Nteleko says all the answers can only be achieved when you tune into eKasi - Our Stories, on eTV.

No Problem Syndicate Sisters on the move Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - It was an emotional Sunday when No Problem Syndicate Sisters visited two children’s homes in Sedibeng - the Nyakallong Home for the Physically and Mentally Disabled and Matwala’s Children’s Home, respectively, in the name of Women’s Month. Tears were running down the faces of these super sisters, who were brave enough to visit these two homes. They could not contain their emotions when both managers elaborated their stories on how they got started making their homes and how they gathered children. Angela Thinane from Nyakallong was very pleased by the sisters’ visit and gifts. They gave groceries and clothes to the homes and spent time with the disabled children. Thinane said that starting the home was something she was inspired to do through her personal experience, when she herself had a disabled

daughter. “It was very hard to accept, but through God’s grace I managed. I thought God was punishing me. But by the look of things, He was preparing me to be strong. These children need love, they need care and need your undivided heart,” says Thinane weepily. Apparently there are three branches that this super-determined woman heads. She is a leader and a pillar of support for these disabled children. The sisters also gave groceries and clothes to Elizabeth Twala who welcomed them with love and care. She also gave a brief history about the home and how she got her children. “Some of these children’s stories are very dramatic and heart-breaking. Because of my love of children I have to be strong and brave for them. I don’t want anything to happen to them. They are my strength,” says Twala. Poppy Mofokeng, chairperson for the sis-

ters, speaking on their behalf, says they are deeply touched and are encouraged to do more.

“We have to salute such women, people who put their lives on hold for others, this is what we call humanity,” concludes Mofokeng.

Moloi following in his father’s footsteps Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - No doubt Thabang Moloi (14) is following in his father’s footsteps as one of the most promising referees to emerge from the region of Sedibeng. At the tender age of 14 the future looks great for this up-and-coming referee. Sedibeng Ster Sports witnessed his talent first hand during one of the Emfuleni Local Football Promtion League matches at the George Thabe Stadium recently. Moloi Jr was assistant to veteran referee Motsheng Kola. He made some brave decisions and he was not intimidated by players and officials and more especially by soccer fans on the stand. To make things interesting, an opposition

team coach asked young Moloi what he was doing there as he was supposed to be officiating for his age-group, then playing outside the George Thabe Stadium. For the uninformed the young man’s father Thabo “Thiza” Moloi is a former referee and he currently numbers prominently among the Safa Sedibeng Referees Coordinators. This Katleho-Impumelelo Secondary School student was discovered by development referee Jabu Mkhwanazi, who was impressed by Moloi’s talent. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Moloi Jr says he started to fall in love with refereeing during the time when he used to go with his father to matches. “Even though I did not see my

father officiating, people always tell me that he was a good referee. He also encouraged me to take refereeing seriously and to follow in the footsteps of Jonas “Samora” Nhlapo, Victor Hlongwane and others,” he says. His mentor Mkhwanazi believes that the young man has the potential to go places if his current commitment is anything to go by. “The boy is going places as far as refereeing is concerned and what I like about him is that, he is willing to learn,” he concludes.

to attend a meeting scheduled to take place at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday at 9:00. The meeting is a way forward to the

newly established Safa u/13 and u/15 league. According to the Emfuleni Local football Association New Committee Chairman – Philip Ndlovu - the meeting is for Stream A teams. “This is the last meeting before the kickoff of the junior league in this Stream. We invite all the teams who are interested to join

the league. We welcome everyone. We want to give these youngsters opportunity to play football and - who knows - some of them could end up playing for Bafana Bafana,” explained Ndlovu. The league was launched by Safa three months ago as part of a master plan to establish junior leagues in this country.

SEDIBENG. - The Safa Sedibeng Women’s League is not yet finished however, Celta Figo Ladies FC seems to have already crowned the league champions. This Sebokeng-based side is at the summit of the log with 31 points. There are five games left to round-off their league programme for the 2013/2014 season. The league consists of eight teams, namely The Birds FC Ladies, Mighty Eagles, Going Up, Young Girls, Real Tokyo, Young Stars and Young Milano Ladies FC and is part of Safa’s initiative to promote women’s football in this country. Safa Sedibeng League coordinator Beauty Molise says some teams have finished their league programme, except for the likes of Celta Vigo, which are still behind with their fixtures. According to

Molise, the delay of the league was due to the Gauteng Women’s Sports Tournament being held in Johannesburg recently.“The league was supposed to be finished by this time but it was interrupted by the women’s tournament held by the Gauteng Sports Department. Some of the games will be played during the weekend and hopefully the league will be finished by next weekend,” says Molise. Meanwhile, Mosile revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports that, next season, they will target more teams to affiliate. She challenges all the women in this region to be involved in football. She adds: “We need more women in football because there is a role for women to play in South African football.” She also challenges women soccer players to form women’s soccer teams or get involved in coaching.

Save football from the dogs! “If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it you almost don’t have to manage them.” This is what our football needs! Shooting From The Hip will always advocate the growth of football regardless of the insults I suffer from those who don’t want to accept the fact that they are failing this region. For example, now their focus is on who should be Safa president! Who cares? This country doesn’t need men in ‘black suits’ but someone who will get their hands dirty to save our football from the dogs. Shooting From The Hip doesn’t care who becomes Safa President. My only concern is the state of deve-

lopment football in this region. These are the very same gentlemen who, The doom of our football is our failure together with former Safa President Dr Moto pick the right people who can take it to lefi Oliphant, brought the 2010 World Cup the next level. to this continent. Safa is in a mess as it is now and I don’t think Dr Khoza wants to risk sacrificing the reputation he worked so hard for - to be one of the most successful football administrators in the world. As for Danny Jordaan, he was sideby-side with Dr Khoza and Dr Molefi Oliphant when this country was awarded the right to host the 2010 WC. My point is that this country needs new faces that will come and change the face of our football. The biggest challenge facing our football is to stay together, win together, and grow together. The same can be said of the Sedibeng region – we are very scared to challenge issues because we don’t want to make enemies. Pick the right people!

DDay for Promotion League teams Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Time is running out for the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League teams to complete their league programme. According to the association’s chairman Philip Ndlovu, they are behind schedule in completion of their league programme. Ndlovu says the initial deadline was September for

all the teams to complete their league programmes. However, he is positive that all the teams will complete their league programmes by the end of the month. He says they are doing everything in their power to push the games so that they can meet Safa Sedibeng’s deadline. He says some of the games will be played during the week, and on Saturdays and Sundays. “I’m quite aware that we are behind

schedule, we are doing everything in our power to ensure that by the end of the month all the teams will be finished with their games. I know this is going to be difficult, especially at this time of the year, because players are writing exams. But the teams understand the situation we all find ourselves in,” says Ndlovu. Meanwhile, expect soccer mania when the

Promotion League teams meet in their respective league matches this coming weekend in both streams. Eyes will be on the local derby when Vaal Milano FC welcomes its bitter rival Nale Academy at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15:00. This encounter promises fireworks as both teams always display exciting football whenever they play.

Get your hands dirty: Jansen

Neil Jansen (far left) is one of the few exprofessional soccer stars who is still involved in the development of football in Sedibeng region. Here he is with his team RustterVaal Saints FC. Photo: Zacharia Nale. Zacharia Nale

RUST-TER-VAAL.- While other ex-professional soccer players are doing little for the advancement of football in this region,

the same can’t be said of Neil Jansen. This former Vaal Professional star is involved in the development of football in this region as co-coach of the Rust-ter-Vaal Saints FC.

The club consists of two divisions - u/15 and u/17. Jansen believes this region is blessed with talent but the only disappointment is that it does not have a professional soccer

team. Jansen was once a household name in South African football, playing for Giant Blackpool before he joined the now-defunct ‘Vaal Monsters.’ He was a no-nonsense defender, leaving his opponents shivering after tackles. Some of the players he played with and against include Geelbooi “Goma” Masango, Jabu “Scara” Mnguni, Ernest “Rambo” Marumo and Meshack “Guna” Zwane. To make it interesting, he still applies the same no-nonsense approach. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Jansen challenges other ex-professional soccer players to get involved in the development of football in this region. He believes that youngsters need the experience of ex-professionals to realise their dream to play at the highest level of football. “I urge all those ex-professionals to give themselves time to coach these youngsters because they need us. “There is no point for us to complain about the state of football in this area if we are not involved,” he concludes.
