Child C hild bborn orn ddead ead at at Kopanong Hospital Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING.- Yolanda Rakhajane (22) is devestated after losing her child at the Kopanong Hospital on Saturday. She gave birth to her dead baby about 12 hours after the baby was declared dead in her womb by hospital staff. Rakhajane is said to have already been dilated 2cm two days before the birth of her child. According to the family Rakhajane’s condition was explained to Kopanong Hospital by her gynaecologist. The frustrated and grief-stricken mother says the hospital staff did not pay much attention to her after this. She claims that she was way past her due date, which according to her gynaecologist, put her and the baby at high risk. Rakhajane told Sedibeng Ster she was admitted to Kopanong Hospital on Friday. Her water had already broken. “I was told I was dilated 2 centimetres by the hospital doctor yet, I did not give birth in the next few hours or the next day during the course of the day. On Saturday morning the doctor examined me. My son was still kicking and he had a heartbeat. Two hours later my son stopped moving. The hospital staff examined me and told me that my baby had died,” says Rakhajane. Shockingly, she slept with her dead baby in her arms for 12 hours as the

hospital claimed that the mortuary was closed. Father of the child, Pule Thinane was too distraught to speak to Sedibeng Ster for most of the interview. He said he was looking forward to having a son: “We are going to take legal action against the hospital. If it was not for their negligence, my son would still be alive,” he said. Salamina Hlahane (Gauteng Provincial Director: Department of Health) says they were not aware of the incident, but she asked for more information from the family.“We are going to investigate the matter and all health personnel involved.” Hlahane asked for the family’s contact details to further her investigations.

Andile ‘Kgotsi’ Xaba departs SEBOKENG.- A son of the soil has departed! Following a short illness and admittance to the Vereeniging Medi clinic last week Andile ‘Kgotsi’ Xaba left this world. Friend and family could not believe this grim news. Xaba was was the student activist at Tshiya College of Education in Qwa-Qwa and served as the Secretary of the SRC in the late 80s. He became an activist educator as a SADTU member in Tsholo Secondary School. He became an ANC Youth League member after the unbanning of liberation movements in 1990, served in the M Plan (Mandela Plan) and was instrumental in the formation of Street and Block Committees and the rebuilding of Youth League structures in the region. Xaba served in the ANCYL Sub Branch and was subsequently elected to the Moscow (Sebokeng) Branch Executive Committee of ANCYL in 1992 as Education Officer. During the height of apartheid sponsored violence he participated in the formation of the Self Defence Units (SDUs) and got arrested in the process. After his release he continued serving the organisation and stood his
ground against criminals who wanted to hijack the revolution and participated actively in the campaign against crime popularly known as “Operation Wanya Tsotsi” . He served as the Deputy Chairperson of the Regional Executive Committee of the ANCYL in the mid 90s. He served as the ANC Chairperson of Sebokeng East Zone. Xaba was appointed as the Personal Assistant of the then MEC of Sport in Gauteng in the early 2000s. He was redeployed as the Personal Assistant of the Sedibeng Executive Mayor in the mid 2000s. At the time of his untimely death he was the ANC Deputy Chairperson of Isaac Ngubeni Branch in Sebokeng. The memorial service for Xaba will be held today (Thursday) September 11 at the Roman Catholic Church in Zone 12 at 15:00. His funeral will be conducted at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Zone 14, Sebokeng on Saturday September 13 from 8:00 till 11:00.

VEREENIGING. – Unitas Park and Sonland Park primary school children were travelling to school in taxi on Monday when they were allegedly hit by a speeding ambulance transporting a pregnant woman. When paramedics arrived on the scene, both drivers were seriously injured and children were treated for shock. Motorists claim the ambulance was speeding and the school taxi was trying to avoid the ambulance. The ambulance hit the back of the taxi and it veered out of control and swerved to the side of the road where it crashed into a wall. Most of the children sustained moderate injuries, but the driver was severely injured and taken to hospital. The pregnant woman in the ambulance was also taken to hospital. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says they are not aware of the accident, and they will investigate the matter. Residents of Unitas Parks say the area has had seen horrible accidents lately. They hope motorists reduce speed and exercise caution on the road.

VUT students go on rampage Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Students of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) ran amok, rampaging, burning checkpoints, throwing dustbins onto the streets last week. A VUT spokesperson told Sedibeng Ster yesterday that all classes have been suspended until further notice. Apparently B-Tech and Engineering students accused the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) of making only 40% of its money available as grants and the rest as loans when they demand at least 75% as grants. Last week’s barricading of entrances affected management, who then did not have access. After burning the checkpoints, Emfuleni Fire and Rescue were called but students blocked the road, threatening to burn the truck. VUT spokesperson Mike Khubone said students started fighting for not receiving what they expected from the office of Dr Blade Nzimande, Minister for Higher Education. They now demand that the institution provide or look for sponsors that could pay for their studies. “Our sin was that we could not access sponsors,” said Khubone. “Our first meeting with the Student Repre-
sentative Council (SRC) was fruitless.” Khuboni said they didn’t see all the violence because the students had burned the checkpoints. He said the management issued letters appealing to students to open the checkpoints. An SRC member who did not want to be identified said they demand safety and security on the campus. The source said they will resume classes once they receive an SMS from NFSAS stating that money has been deposited into their accounts. The students added that they have on numerous occasions engaged with the Vice Chancellor Professor Irene Moutlana. By Tuesday, all VUT students were told to vacate the building as the campus had been closed until further notice. Students were given a letter which notified them: “Be informed that management has decided to close the university with immediate effect. Students are given 24 hours to vacate the University residences. “We appeal to students not to engage in further protests or disruptive and violent behavior.” Meanwhile VUT remains closed until further notice.

Nyembe said the problem started after she allowed Maphiri Annah Mkhosi to temporarily stay in the house 12 years ago: “We had an agreement that when I demand my house, we’re not going to fight,” says Nyembe. Mkhosi was allocated a house in Bophelong Extension and moved out. Mkhosi’s mistake was to leave a relative of her late fiancee Motseki April Mogotsi in the house. The relative refused to move out, claiming that the house belonged to their late father. “The deceased never had a house before,” said Mkhosi. Nyembe is the legitimate owner of the house. ORANGE FARMS. - Skhumbuzo Secondary School in Orange Farm and Sakhisizwe Secondary School a few kilometres from Orange Farm - Kwa-Majazana - were both raided by Public Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane on Monday morning. The main aim of the raid was to bring stability within these two schools. Both headmasters had alerted the Public Safety office about their issues. The schools had experienced uncontrollable behavior by students. MEC Nkosi-Malobane indicated that uncontrollable behavior at schools can be curbed. “All our children need is love and to know the implications of their actions. Every action fetches a reaction. With crime, there is prison,” said Nkosi- Malobane during the raiding of the schools. When asked if there is a plan to raid their way through the south side of the Vaal or through the entire Sedibeng in future, the MEC said they are planning to eliminate bad behavior in schools. “A child is raised by a village while fathered and mothered by parents. The issue of alcohol abuse in schools is supposed to be an issue of the past. Alcohol and drug abuse in schools is a societal matter. We need to support the schools as parents. Our

Mafube has since left his girlfriend in the house: “Nyembe is the rightful owner of that house,” says Mkhosi. “Mafube has moved out of the house. The only obstacle is his former girlfriend. The girlfriend claimed that the house belonged to her father-in-law, which is not true,” says Mkhosi. MEC gives hope to Old Hospital residents Moleboheng Chaha
VEREENIGING.- It is a fact that Vereeniging Old Hospital (21) ward 15 is no place for human beings to live. These were the sentiments of Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and COGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo who addressed distraught residents on Monday. The MEC made site visits to see some of the problem areas in the region. This comes after years of complaints from residents regarding their dire living conditions. Mamabolo stated that residents mention some of the difficulties they deal with every day, stating that the place was no environment for people to live in. “It is time that government engage people about what is to be done in terms of going forward, so that you form part of the decisionmaking process. We must all come up with ideas as to what is going to happen. We will begin the process by looking at all the problems residents face. We will then see what can be done now and what can be done later.” Mamabolo stated that the first issue to be dealt with was that of toilets, which would be delivered on Tuesday. Residents listed some of the problems as security, water and electricity. Mamabolo urged the residents’ committee to compile a detailed list of people who are currently staying in the old hospital. Mamabolo said the list will help them as government to plan accordingly and prevent outside opportunistic people who use the situation to their advantage. “We don’t want people who are not part of this to unfairly take advantage of the upcoming intervention by government,” said MEC Mamabolo. Residents thanked the MEC for having time to come to address them. “We are thankful that you took the time to come see us today,” said the residents, stating that the MEC has given them hope that something will finally be done about their situation.
The residents of the Vereeniging Old Hospital (21) were delighted to be adressed by Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and COGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo. They stated that they hope the MEC’s intervention will change their situation.

SEBOKENG.- It seems that it was a bitter sweet celebration, as people still managed to shout “Asina mali, asi sebenzi” meaning we have no money because we do not have jobs to some of the officials who had been addressing the crowd. The Sedibeng District Municipality, in conjunction with its local municipalities Lesedi, Emfuleni and Midvaal, commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Vaal Uprising on September 3. The day saw hundreds of residents and officials take part in a symbolic march from the Zone
11 Post Office to the Zone 7 Stadium where the festivities took place. Member of Parliament and Gauteng ANC Chairperson Paul Mashatile thanked the people of the Vaal for having played an important role in the fighting of the unfair rent laws during the apartheid regime. “It is very important to remember where we come from. The people of Vaal took to the streets against black local authorities which sparked the fight all over the country. Fighting for freedom did not come easy; it came with a lot of pain and tears. People of the Vaal never gave up. You fought until the regime came to its knees.” Mashati-

le made a pledge to turn the Vaal into a river city, thus industrialising it in order to revitalise its economy. Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng says: “There has been a lot of development in terms of what the Vaal looked like 30 years ago. The conditions today are different from 1984. All interconnected streets are now tarred, we have clinics and the economy is growing.” Mofokeng states that Sedibeng has gone from 80 000 houses in 1994 to approximately 200 000 houses now in the Vaal region.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The death of a local activist last week has left the community in shock. A person who departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds and, through us, they live on. Although the death of friends saddens our souls and leaves an empty space, we must move on and always remember them with joy. Break your camp and advance
Moleboheng Chaha
VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) B-Tech Public Relations Management Students held a conference to empower themselves in the field of communications. The conference was dubbed ‘Break your camp and advance’. The objectives of the event were to empower students to be job creators instead of being job seekers, to communicate possible business and career opportunities and to eliminate misconceptions about Communications and Public Relations. The occasion was graced by different professionals in the Communications field, who gave presentations on how one can make a success of their qualifications once they have completed their studies. Quincy Kekana from Hope FM told students that although a curriculum vitae (CV) was and is an important document, what is more important is personal branding: “When you walk into my office, don’t tell me about a piece of paper, sell yourself and convince me that you can do the job. Not because of what has been written in your CV, but because you exude what has been written.” The MMC for Strategic Planning and Economic Development says, “PR and Communication practitioners are the backbone of any organisation. As government, we want to get rid of tender-preneurship and promote entrepreneurship, thus encouraging young people to start their own businesses.” The conference ended with more speakers urging students to be confident, enthusiastic and focused, telling them to go out there and seize the opportunities that existed in the field for them.

EVATON. - Evagold Centre has once again proven its commitment to the community by giving free self-defence training to the girl learners of Maxeke Secondary School. Safety co-ordinator Mamosebetsi Mbangeni told the learners (girls) that learning how to protect themselves does not mean they have to fight on the street: “When most people think of self-defence, they think of hitting back or using karate. But a large part of self-defence has nothing to do with hitting or striking back at another person.” She imparted this gem when the school paid a visit to Evagold Shopping Centre, corner Golden Highway & Tiro Street Evaton West, where more than 40 schoolgirls in grades 8 and 9 received self defence classes from
Nick of the Emet Fitness and Fighting Gym. Nick said, “The first step in learning personal safety is accepting the fact that we live in a dangerous and violent world. So they will have to learn how to protect themselves against attackers.” Emet Fitness and Fighting Gym specialise in training corporate clients in both fitness, wellness and self defence. Centre manager Simphiwe Mphuthi said, “The self-defence training turned out very well. I did not expect that so many children would turn up. They must learn to always be vigilant, especially when they are walking in the streets.” The event ended with every one of the students receiving a certificate after having completed the self-defence training successfuly.

According to member Gugu Merafe the group was formed to help alleviate poverty within the community through charity: “We do a lot of charity work, especially helping those children whose parents cannot afford to buy school
uniforms and shoes. “There is nothing more satisfying, than to see a smile on a child’s face.” Deputy principal Julia Khomo was delighted to see members of the community reach out and help those who need it most: “On behalf of Emfuleni Primary, we appreciate what you have done. No-one is an island, which is why we must always stand together as people and help each other.”

EVATON. - Education is the key to success. This was stressed when Qedilizwe Secondary School learners for the first time celebrated ‘International Literacy Day’ on Monday as a way to promote a culture of reading amongst young kids. The theme for this year is “Literacy and Sustainable Development”. The aim of the day was to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Another reason was to raise awareness of the value of the written word.

The crowd was filled with creative students with many reciting poems they had written themselves. On the first floor were those learners who kept their brains stimulated by forming part of the spelling Bee team, which saw the competition get tougher towards the end of the day. The event was organised by the Song Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of scholars by providing career guidance in partnership with North-West University in the Faculty of Law. The founder of Song Foundation - Poppy Pule - said, “We regard today as the most important day of the year, as we instill a culture of reading and writing among young people. We believe that literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals,” said Pule. The educators at the school were impressed at how the learners reacted and the programmes that were set that day. Pule states that it is crucial for those who have managed to make a success of their careers to continue helping those that are still going through the journey: “Our foundation works a lot with girl children. We invite career women who are dedicated to bringing development to young girls to form part of the foundation’s mentor club, ” she ends. Our football needs higher intervention!
Some men are called men just because they wear trousers, but in reality they don’t qualify as men. Shooting From The Hip can say the same of certain local development coaches and administrators in this region. They have no
“balls”, to say the least! For example, how can one explain the LFA Squad being selected at the dusty James Ground in Sharpeville? To make things worse, some teams with good football structures were not invited for the selections. The truth of the matter is that Master Zondo and Philip Ndlovu must give the Emfuleni Local Football Association teams a good reason why the LFA squad was selected at the James Ground. To make matters worse, this time around the very people who took the squad to the final last year were not invited for selections. What do these gentlemen want to achieve as far as the development of football is con-
cerned in this region? Shooting From The Hip is worried because as things stand, some very influential people in football have decided to take a back seat and fold their arms to watch these clowns as they expose themselves. To some, they see the regional squads as a holiday destination while others see it as a ‘gravy-train.’ The question Shooting From The Hip wants to ask Master Zondo who, I was told, is the Emfuleni Local Football Association Technical Director is: How did our LFA squad end up being selected at James Ground? Shooting From The Hip also asks Emfuleni Local Football Association’s chairman
11
Philip Ndlovu: How - as chairman - did he allow our LFA squad to be selected under those conditions, taking into consideration that the tournament is played on a dusty pitch? Gentlemen, you have much to explain to the development teams and coaches in this region. The reason why the Evaton teams were left out is another issue that needs to be explained. If they didn’t play the league, who is to blame? So you punish those poor children because of your egos? Come on, somebody! The problems we have in this region cannot be fixed by humans - we need Godly intervention. Please GOD, save our football from these vultures!
Oujan to the rescue Neil Jansen Memorial Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Social Crime Prevention commander Inspector Oujan Mohoboko invested his time and energy in the unleashing of hidden talent in young boys in his neighbourhood of Steelpark over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday the Crime Prevention Commander and resident of the area organised a soccer tournament that was supported by young local teams and neighbouring areas, including Tshepiso and Muvhango. The two-day soccer tournament was a success. Mohoboko says he is investing his time and energy in these young boys, who will be leaders of this area in the future: “We received support from nu-
merous local businessmen whom we would like to thank. Some supported with money, which was a cash prize for the two finals and some with food,” he says. Mohoboko started this initiative after realising that there was a high rate of crime and alcohol abuse amongst youth in the area. “Sport brings discipline to a person and in life once you lose the edge of discipline respect will be gone as well so we are glad that there are people that still think for the youth in our area,” says a bystander and soccer-lover. On Saturday the Sumba Boys Juniors won 3- 2 on finals against Unitas Park and on Sunday Sumba Boyz seniors won 1-0 against Muvhango FC.

SHARPEVILLE. - Former soccer great Simon ‘Bull’ Lehoko hailed the Neil Jansen Memorial Games a success. The event took place at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium over the weekend. The tournament was in honour of this fallen hero - Neil Jansen - who tragically died on the field while playing for Sedibeng Masters in April. The tragic death of this former Vaal Professional and Giant Blackspool star came as a shock to many. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Lehoko said this Neil Jansen Memorial Games will be part of celebrating a heritage when they host it again next year. He was full of praise for the teams and local soccer fans who came to support and took part in the 1st Inaugural Neil Jansen Games. The games saw yesteryear soccer stars playing among themselves to entertain local
soccer fans. Some of the former professional stars who graced the event included deadly former Orlando Pirates striker Moses ‘Rambo’ Moloi, Bricks Mbele and Geelbooi ‘Goma’ Masango, to mention but a few. Even though the turnout was not good, Lehoko believes that next year will be much better. The poor turnout was caused by the festival at Dlomo Dam, just a few kilometres from the George Thabe Stadium. “I want to take this opportunity to thank all the participating teams and Sharpeville people who came to support the initiative. The games would not have been so successful if it wasn’t for them. I also wish to thank Neil Jansen's family for allowing us to organise the event. I have no doubt that the next event will be much better and we intend to invite teams from outside the Vaal,” said Lehoko.

Safa Sedibeng calls ELFA chairman to order Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - “It is wrong for Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) to talk on behalf of the region.” This was said by Safa Sedibeng League coordinator – Beauty Molise this week. Molise said this following an article published last week in Sedibeng Ster Sport under the headline “Regional Play-Offs” whre ELFA chairman Philip Ndlovu talked about regional play-offs. Putting the record straight, Molisi says Regional Play-Offs is a Safa Sedibeng matter and nothing to do with ELFA. He says that, after the article was published, she received lots of calls from concerned teams. She says the article was misleading when Ndlovu said no Promotion League is played in the Midvaal area. She says this has brought tension to the region with some teams questioning Ndlovu’s statement in the newspaper. “We want to put the record straight that Mr Ndlovu was not representing the region. The region will be the one that sets the date and venue of the regional playoffs. The LFAs (local football administrators) have nothing to do with regional play-offs,” says Molise. As if this is not enough, Molise says
Safa Sedibeng called Emfuleni Local Football Association Chairman Philip Ndlovu to order. Photo: Zacharia Nale.
Ndlovu is not part of the Regional Executive Committee and cannot talk about playoffs. Meanwhile, Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that the bad blood among local football administrators affects two camps in this region. Sedibeng Ster Sport has also learned that ‘secret meetings’ have been held in this region in preparation for the forthcoming regional elections.
