Candle flames consume woman

SHARPEVILLE. - A burning candle can bring light and joy to a family, particularly when one does not have electricity, but it can also be a person’s passport to heaven. This was evident following the horrible death by fire of Queen Mothibedi (31) from Tshepiso Phase 1. She burned to death in the early hours of Sunday when a candle fell on the mattress while she was fast asleep. The mother of two was apparently on a drinking spree with her friends in her shack on Saturday night and later that evening, her friends left her alone to sleep. After midnight her family was woken up by her screams. Her sister Dibuseng Mothibedi says she heard the deceased screaming from her shack and as she ran outside to investigate she found that the shack was on fire. She says, “When I reached her door a blaze greeted me. I struggled to open the door but when I did, the angry flames were too hot.” Neighbours were called to the scene and helped to put out the fire, but it was too late for Queen as the angry flames had already consumed her. Police and emergency service were called to the scene and on arrival found Queen lying next to a cupboard with her hands glued to her face. The Mothibedi family thanked their lucky stars that the fire had burned only one shack and had not spread to the other shack which was joined to the one that burned. The deceased’s brother Thabo, who lives in the other shack, was awoken by the smoke and managed to escape unharmed. Police spokesperson Constable Rapule Pitso confirms that an inquest has been opened.

Place called home Katleho Home for the Disabled Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON. - ArcelorMittal South Africa - Africa’s largest steelmaker - the Lusa Community Chest, MM Civils, Vaal Toyota, Mooivaal Media, IFM Radio and Vaal Commando Motor Cycling Club, were pleased to officially open a reconstructed home for the disabled, Katleho Home for the Mentally ill and Physically Disabled (KHMPD), on Friday. The project was a joint venture between all stakeholders mentioned above and is worth R500 000. Apparently, the home was in conditions considered dire by the Health Department. KHMPD manager Maggie Ntseole could not express her feelings during the opening. She was gobsmacked. “I don’t have words to describe the extent to which I’m humbled by the help I’ve received from everyone - may God bless them. I wanted to help my children get a proper home today. I can boldly say they have a place called home. To all stakeholders I would like to send my deepest thanks,” said the emotional Ntseole during the handover of

the building. The reconstruction project started in 2011, when ArcelorMittal South Africa was approached by Lusa Community Chest for assistance with the restoration and repair of the building that had fallen into dilapidation but was still used as a residence, housing 26 mentally and physically disabled adults and children. Some of the challenges noted at the time included the lack of toilet facilities, poor sanitation, a leaking roof and a generally decaying infrastructure. “The original structure was not suitable for human habitation and we therefore decided to assist with the rebuilding of the home by sponsoring R250 000 towards this worthy cause. We felt that we could not allow anyone to live in such detrimental and hazardous living conditions,” says Maggie Mopedi, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility and External Relations at ArcelorMittal South Africa. Apart from ArcelorMittal’s generous contribution, MM Civils were responsible for

project management, supervision and all brick-works, while the Vaal Commando Motor Cycling Club sponsored R10 000 towards the construction phase of the project. The remaining partners were involved with all the

finishings and furniture for the house. The home is now a 24-hour state-of-the-art facility for mentally and physically disabled children who are in need of special care and attention.

which bogus, self-procaimed doctors operate has angerd churches.Speaking recently Reverend Gift Moerane, Deputy Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) says that it is high time all churches, organisations, and schools take to the streets and face bogus doctors. “Until something drastic is done to prevent the posters put on the poles, these foreigners will never stop doing this. Sedibeng has a high rate of pregnancy since backstreet abortions came into the picture. Illegal abortion is barbaric, not tolerated in the society. Our duty as clergymen is to bring unity in the region,” he says. The Health MMC of the Emfuleni Local Municiaplity (ELM) Councillor Sello Pitso says there are 18 community health clinics in the area that can provide professional help and that illegal abortions cost government millions of rands. “I am planing to come up with a mechanism on how best we could deal with these backstreet doctors,” he said.

out to industry

VEREENIGING. - Sedibeng College is reaching out to industry to ensure the training needs of industry are met by the College. This should result in better employability of students as their training will be of the required standard. In order to achieve this, it is important that relevant and modern equipment is available for training at the College. The Zest Weg Group from Linbro Park donated an electrical motor to the College for training purposes. Mr Charles Mamashela from the College Skills Division collected the motor from Zest Weg Group’s representatives, Ms Dharmeta Makan and Mr Edson Cristofolini.

The College is accredited with MerSETA for Electrical, Fitting and Turning, Automotive and Fabrication. MerSETA played a vital role in liaising between the College and Zest Weg Group making the donation possible.

SHARPEVILLE. - Taxi violence seems to be on the rise and for some the only solution is to kill. Two men between 30 and 35 were arrested last week on suspicion that they were dealing in drugs and were hired assassins. As these men had been closely monitored by the National Crime Intelligence unit, they were followed up until they stopped in Sharpeville. Police monitored them closely and managed to seize 80kg of dagga with a street-value of 80

VEREENIGING. - The corner of Rhodes and Voortrekker Avenues in the CBD turned out to be a ‘devil’s den’ when complainant Ellias Mkhwanazi (42) was robbed by two unknown men. The robbery took place on Friday when two robbers took advantage of the 42-yearold, tripped him and seized his bag which was filled with valuables. According to police, the complainant had about R30 000 which - he claims - he had just withdrawn from the bank. Police spokesperson Constable Bubbles Ngwenya says the two suspects carefully planned their attack.

One walked in front of the complainant while the other walked behind him. The one in front suddenly stopped and ran into the victim. The two fought for the bag until the second suspect came along to help steal the bag. The victim was then overpowered and the felons fled the scene with the bag and its contents The complainant managed to memorise the number plate of the vehicle they used to get away. “We plead with anyone who may know the owners of a Toyota Corolla with the registration plate number BXY 347 GP to come forward,” urges Ngwenya. The young man was taken to the Sebokeng Hospital for medical attention. At the time of going to press police had not confirmed whether a case had been opened.

EVATON. - Drug addiction in Palm Springs has become a problem and many residents have since associated it with the high rate of crime in the area. This comes after a man in his early 20’s was beaten on Friday in Section A on the suspicion that he stole building material. It is alleged by the builder who was employed to build rooms at one of the houses that the suspected thug stole the goods that he (the builder) was supposed to use to build the rooms. The builder apparently saw a container in Orange Farm that he suspected belonged to him on his way to work, but as he only suspected the container was his property he continued walking to his destination. It was only when he attempted to open his place of work that he realised someone had broken in and stolen his building tools along with taps and basins. He alerted the owner of the house where he was building that he had seen his container on his way to work and they went to the place. On arrival they found the young man sitting in a shack full of stolen goods. They grabbed him and took him back to the place from which he had apparently stolen the material. He was assaulted with a ‘sjambok’ and water mixed with salt was poured over him. It is said that when the owner noticed that the man was badly injured he called police and emer-

SDM mayor out Stop whining on R1 000 bail Lerato Serero

News Editor Comments

In a surprise turn of events this week, I was forced for the first time in many years to agree with a politician - but me agreeing with him has nothing to do with the programmes he or his party has to implement, or the person who should be chosen into office, or worse, which tender goes to whom. I am simply of the same opinion with him when he says South Africans should stop complaining about the problems in the country and get their hands dirty, thereby becoming part of the solution. This guy made me realise that we whine about everything. If it is not racism, it is crime, if it is not corruption, it is unemployment; if it is not the price of petrol, it is the price of

rates and taxes, and if it is not about our colleagues, it is about our opponents. The list goes on. This politician is correct to say we should move away from being the biggest complainers. We do have a right to complain and criticise, but South Africans are taking things too far and offer no solutions to the complaints they put forward. Yes, we’re all armchair critics and prefer to point fingers to getting into the scrum and showing people what we can do. Let us criticise and offer solutions and not whine and whine and whine until we turn blue in the face. Offer alternatives, ‘finish and klaar’. On a lighter note, I would like to congratulate my colleague and ‘big brother’ Zacharia Nale for being nominated in the 2013 Gauteng Sports Awards in the category of Sports Journalist of the Year. Congratulations Bra Zach and I hope you bring it home. Now here is a man who does not whine and moan and complain about anything and everything under the South African sun, but gets up and gets his hands dirty. Lerato...

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Fuming Sedibeng political parties demand the resignation of Sedibeng District Municipal (SDM) Mayor Simon Mofokeng. Mofokeng is also the chairperson of the regional African National Congress (ANC) and the parties say he is always in the news for wrong reasons. This follows his arrest last Tuesday in Vanderbijlpark for alleged drunk driving. He was released on bail of R1 000 without appearing before a court and the case was postponed to September 5 following investigations. Vanderbijlaprk Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that Police appeal to members of the public to let Police conduct their investigation as no-one receives special treatment when it comes to criminal cases. DA caucus chaiperson Dennis Ryder says, “The latest incident vindicates the DA’s position that the mayor is not a suitable person to be leading the municipality. The DA calls on the mayor to step down immediately.” The motion for the mayor to resign was rejected by the ANC. The regional ANC has come out with guns blazing to protect their

chairperson. The party says it will protect their chairperson with everything it has. When contacted for comment Andries Mapetla, director in the mayor’s office, said the matter is the hands of Police and the provincial committee of the ANC. “We appeal to the people to allow the province to resolve the matter without being pushed. The municipality will be guided by the leading party after the investigation conducted by the Police,” he said. Regional PAC secretary Appa Pooe said: “We will speak to the municipality to investigate the matter.” . The Congres of the People (Cope) had this to say: “The mayor must be suspended by the municipality and ANC while investigation takes place without any fear or favour.” Cope added that the mayor should be a symbol of respect and a father figure. Nic van Rensburg, regional deputy chairperson of theFreedom Front Plus, said the community must let the law take its course. “It’s very shocking news for someone like the district mayor to be involved in drunk driving. ‘I believe that no-one is above the law,” he said.

Great spectacle on the way Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. – To plough back into the community Makho Makgotamishe Building Constructions (MBC) in conjunction with Boitshepiville Youth Centre will stage a soccer tournament at the James and Pepsi Soccer Grounds in Sharpeville. This mouth-watering

news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by King Radebe, who is the tournament publicist. The tournament is from June 22 to July 13 with the finals. According to Radebe the tournament is for the seniors, u/13, u/15 and u/17 divisions. The winner in the senior category will smile all the way to the bank with

a R20 000 cheque, a trophy and medals, while the winners in u/17 will pocket R10 000, soccer kits and medals. The winner in the u/15 category will receive R5000, a trophy and medals, and the u/13 champions will get R1 250, soccer kits, a trophy and medals. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Radebe

said there were also individual prizes such as Player of The Tournament, Top Goal Scorer Award, Coach of The Tournament and many others. “We are quite aware that most teams don’t have sponsorships and this tournament is part of MBC’s move to contribute to the disadvantaged teams,” says Radebe.

Veteran journo nominated for Award Sedibeng Ster’s sports writer Zacharia Nale (left) with Gauteng MEC for Sports and Recreation Lebohang Maile during the Gauteng Sports Awards Nomination Party held at Urban Tree, Sandton, in Johannesburg on Monday.

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng Ster veteran sports writer Zacharia “Zakes” Nale was announced among the Gauteng Sports Awards finalists during the Nomination Party that took place at Urban Tree, Sandton, in Johannesburg on Monday. ‘Zakes’, as he is affectionately known, was nominated along with former SABC Soccer Zone host Kwena Moabelo and Times Media’s Kgomotso Sethusha in the Journalist of The Year category. The winner will be announced at the Gauteng Sports Gala event scheduled to take place at Emperors Palace on June 29

Gauteng MEC for Sports and Recreation Lebohang Maile congratulated all the finalists, wishing them luck. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Nale says he wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the people who played an important role in his journalism career since he joined this publication. He also thanks Moruti Sehanka who nominated him for the award. “I’m lost for words because I did not expect to be among the finalists. But I want to thank the Sedibeng people for their support,” he concludes.

Help! : Gauteng Vaal Netball team Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Gauteng Vaal Netball is desperately in need of financial help to represent the region at the SA u/19 and u/21 Championship scheduled to take place at Enkangala Region in Witbank from July 7-14. The Gauteng Vaal team has no regional sponsor, so all players and officials are to raise funds for transport, clothing (track-suits, playing kits) and accommodation to honour this prestigious tournament. According to Gauteng Vaal Netball Associati-

on president Dudu Msane, each player has to raise an amount of R2400. Msane makes a special plea to local companies and business people to assist the players and six officials so they can honour the tournament. “This is an opportunity for the players and officials to participate in this prestigious tournament where they can be selected to represent the country. All players are students and others are unemployed. The players are from local teams in Sedibeng and they cannot afford to pay for themselves,” says

Msane. This, however, is the same story every year when the Gauteng Vaal Netball team has to participate in the Netball South Africa tour-

naments. At one stage Vaal Netball team failed to honour a tournament due to financial problems.
