SEBOKENG. - After a fruitless meeting that took place on Sunday between the Zone 6 Extension 2 (ward 38) councillor and community members, residents felt betrayed and disgusted. The meeting apparently had no direction and this angered both the community and the councillor; emotions ran high. Residents started threatening the councillor with a riot the following day. To demonstrate their frustration they took to the streets on Monday morning, barricaded roads with rocks and burning tyres. They claim that the councillor does not actively engage with all parts of the community and other effective leaders. It also appears that the lack of service delivery triggered the riot and community members allege that the councillor told them to continue with their illegal protest. The aim of the riot apparently was to demand better roads, a sports facility for the youth, and water pipes. Residents also claim that the councillor does not empower, support or engage
with them. They claim that their leader rarely calls meetings and keeps no record of any issues they discuss and has no office where residents can raise their concerns. Ward 38 Councillor Robby Lehlake dis-
misses these allegations. He says, “ I called a meeting in order to inform the community about service delivery, IDP and finance. “The problem started when I addressed them about the one tarred road. “They dis-
missed the meeting saying they wanted to speak to the Mayor and demanded that all streets should be tarred and not just one.” The residents vow to continue with the protest until their demands are met.

VEREENIGING. - Ndumiso Hadebe was announced as the winner of SABC 1’s One Day Leader competition on Sunday. The show that aired for 13 weeks showed how admirably the 21-year-old executed the various challenges given to him. Hadebe captivated viewers with his confidence and charisma. Many will agree that he deserved this hard-earned title because of the leadership qualities he displayed as well as his passion for community issues, which comes naturally to him as he is the youth leader of his church and has been involved in many community projects that empower the youth. Sedibeng Municipa-
lity together with the South African Youth Council (SAYC) held a campaign on Saturday in honour of South Africa’s one-day leader. The campaign started at Mark Park in Vereeniging and continued at Vaal Mall in Vanderbjilpark. According to SAYC chairperson Tumi Mochawe, the reason behind the campaign was to encourage people to show their support for the outstanding leader by voting. “We knew he would win, that’s why we were behind him all the way,” Mochawe says. Ndumiso expressed his gratitude towards all his supporters. “I am grateful and humbled by the support I received, I hope to serve the community to the best of my ability,” says Hadebe.

Yes, rightfully so; the people are demanding what they should have been receiving for ages, which is decent service delivery. However, their blocking of roads and burning of tyres should not be endorsed. A permanent solution to the issues they are raising should be agreed upon so that the same situation does not repeat itself. Many communities resort to damaging property to show their frustration and anger. This should not be allowed because once the situation returns to normal they will be demanding the very same property they damaged, re-starting the very same cycle of protest from

Asked what inspired her to become a bodybuilder, she says she was inspired to go into the sport by tennis stars like the Williams sisters. “Those girls really inspired me to take sport very seriously. It is my dream to compete overseas one day. I’m working very hard at training,” says Ntele. She challenges other women to take part in sport to remain fit and healthy.
