DA to object to Vaal Metro! Moleboheng Chaha
No to abuse
SEDIBENG. - The Municipal Demarcation Board’s (MDB) recent announcement that the Vaal region will probably become a metro by 2016 has not come as a suprise to many. The decision, which came as a rude slap across the face for the Democratic Alliance (DA), means that ANC-ruled Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and DA-governed Midvaal Local Municipality will merge to form a class A metro municipality, while Lesedi Municipality will be part of Ekhuruleni Metro by default. Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) executive mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng has welcomed the announcement made by the MDB and says, “The announcement takes forward the long held belief of the SDM, as
VEREENIGING.- Holding posters that read words such as ‘Yes to minis,’ ‘No to Ben 10 and Sugar daddies’ and ‘No to prostitution,’ women, members of Correctional Services and community members led by Emfuleni Local Municipality’s Councillor Mpho Mofokeng marched to the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Thursday. The march was held in line with the celebration of Women’s Month programme. The marches delivered a memorandum which stated their demands. Amongst those was that they wish for an end to prostitution in Vereeniging, and they also demand visible policing, thorough investigations of reported criminal cases and commitment from the SAPS to end easy access to drugs. “We further demand a working relationship with the house of justice, a clear strategy to help curb gender-based violence and a joint programme between SAPS, CPF and communities around issues of crime,” the statement ends.

resolved by its council through its growth and development strategy, that the best interests of all the residents of the area will be served by a Vaal Metro.” Mofokeng adds that much thought and planning has gone into the proposed transition to a metro. DA Gauteng Local Government spokesperson Fred Nel says: “The DA will utilise its legal right to object to the decision of the Board and calls on all other organisations and individuals to lodge their objections to the proposed merger. According to the Municipal
Demarcation Act a period of 30 days is available to lodge objections and the Board must consider each and every objection.” MDB chairperson Landiwe Mahlangu says that there is an increasing population in the Vaal Triangle which may necessitate a metro. “In our legislation, it has been identified that this country is experiencing rapid urbanisation. So the only municipality in the legislation that is best suited to deal with any area that is experiencing urbanisation is actually what we call the metros,” he says.

Get rid of SAB failures The ball is in her court Zacharia Nale
SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale Getting rid of the ‘previous’ Emfuleni Local Association executive committee members was not an invitation for some teams to do as they please. For example, Promotion League has now become a ‘Mickey Mouse’ League. You know why? It’s because some teams are now playing with SAB League players in the Promotion League. They want to win this league by hookor-by-crook! Shooting From The Hip is one of the people who wanted to see the backs of the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s executive committee members, but this doesn’t mean we must allow our football to become a sacrifice. If Shooting From The Hip may ask: why did the behaviour of the teams’ development coaches and officials change all of a sudden? Shooting From The Hip’s message to those development coaches and officials who are now turning Promotion League into a ‘Mickey Mouse’ league is ‘Gentlemen, please stop this.’ Shooting From The Hip is also quite aware that some of the teams still have to affiliate.
As things now stand, most of the teams play their league fixture week-in-andweek-out, but the truth of the matter is that they are not in good standing. The question Shooting From The Hip asks is: when are they going to affiliate? At the end of the season when they see that they finish at the respective positions or are about to be crowned the league champions? This is something interesting to look forward to! Shooting From The Hip makes a special plea to the entering committee under leadership of Philip Ndlovu to look into this matter, especially those teams who are now fielding SAB League players. The argument might be that they were properly signed by those teams, but is this part of development - with some players old enough to play in the PSL still competing against 15-year-old boys in Promotion League? It is not a secret that some of the Promotion League teams play with young players between the ages of five and 17. In case those development coaches are not aware, Promotion League is part of development. Those SAB League players failed to compete against their age group and now they take advantage of these youngsters. They failed to give their SAB League teams promotion, so now they take the place of these up-and-coming youngsters? For anyone who cares to listen, this is not those township soccer tournaments whereby teams do as they wish, this is the development league. Stop it right now!
SEDIBENG. - With the country celebrating Women’s Month, Sedibeng Ster Sports looks at some of the women who played a part in the development of sports in this region. Montseng “Mantshadi” Kola needs no introduction in local football as she is one of the women who has - for the past 18 years - played an important part in the growth of women’s football in Sedibeng. At the age of 39 Kola is still officiating in the SAB League and Promotion League. She is the first female referee from this region to officiate in what was previously taken to be a man’s sport – football. Despite all the insults she has suffered from ‘stereotypes’ who still regard football as a man’s sport, Kola has no intention to retire from officiating any time soon.
Sedibeng Ster Sports pays homage to this veteran female referee for her commitment and loyalty in this beautiful game of football. She tells Sedibeng Ster that she wants to leave her legacy in local football for up-and-coming female referees in this region. She is an inspiration not only to sportswomen but to all women. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Kola says she still has a lot to offer in football. Kola says there is a serious need for the growth of female referees. “There are other female referees in this region but I’m worried because there are so few of them. We need to continue to identify them. I know most of the people still view refereeing as a dangerous profession. I want to encourage other young girls out there to come forward because refereeing is not only for men but also for females,” she concludes.
SAPS National Women’s Championship Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Sedibeng region hosted a successful four-day SAPS National Women’s Soccer Championship 2013 at the Isak Steyl Stadium. This women’s soccer tournament formed part of the celebration of Women’s Month. The tournament came to an end last Thursday with an award ceremony in the evening. The prize giving ceremony was attended by Sedibeng District Mayor Si-
mon Mofokeng and President of SAPSFA Major General Tsumane. They were among many dignitaries who graced the occasion. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Cops Cadre In Fitness and In Health.’ Vanderbijlpark Police liaison, Kinnie Steyn says it is through initiatives such as sport that women of the SAPS can empower themselves and stand united against daily challenges.
