Old man rapes great-grand child Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - An angry mob showed nothing but resentment towards a 73-year-old accused of rape at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court last Wednesday. The angry mob marched from Sebokeng Post Office in Zone 11 to Sebokeng Magistrates Court to show their dissatisfaction. This protest came following the case of a 13-year-old girl from Zone 7 who is alleged to have been raped by a 73-year-old man. It is alleged that the 73-year-old man raped the young girl, his own great-grand daughter. The accused did not show any remorse during the court proceeding. He did not want the state lawyer and laughed in court. While the victim was in court, she was not in the same court room to protect her identity. After the court proceedings the angry mob bayed for the accused’s blood. Oupa Shumeni from Healthy NGO says they are going to support the family until justice take its course. “We are human and we cannot stand such inhumanity that was done by the accused. We hope the law take serious steps

against the accused. We are hoping for a speedy recovery for the victim,” says Shumeni. Freda Motloenya from Bana Ba Godimo Dropping Centre also

shares the same sentiments with Shumeni to support the family and allow justice to take its course. The case was postponed for further investigations.

Beyond the call of duty Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING.-The Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for Public Safety, Mmakgomo Raikane has congratulated men and women in blue for a job well done in serving the community. Raikane was delivering her speech at the SAPS Annual Prestige Awards Ceremony 2013/14 Vereeniging Cluster, held at the Vereeniging Banquet Hall. “Although the community views you in a negative light, most of you are doing a very good job,” Raikane said. Police officers were awarded for having dedicated up to 40 years of their lives to serving in the SAPS. Vereeniging Cluster Commander Brigadier Pule Mokoena says, “Today we reciprocate and say thank you to the men and women who have been in law

enforcement for more than 10, 20 or even 30 years. Some of you have even gone above and beyond the call of duty. To those who are going, I want to say that you have served with dignity and an undying commitment.” Mokoena added that it was very important for the community at large to see police in a different light by getting to know what it is that they do. The event saw prestige awards, medals and retirement certificates handed out to the many officers who had shown commitment and dedication.

Sharpeville comes to a halt over services

Mduduzi Mathebula

The residents said that a few years ago a number of residents from Phuma’ Sibethane and Sharpeville were fraudulently allocated houses in Tshepiso, Phase 3 and Phase 4 while others were still on the waiting list. Emotions ran high among those that were not allocated houses as they thought they were forgotten. Some residents from the informal settlement say they have been living in the squatter camp for more than 20 years in this democratic country.

Joyce Maseko says, “ I have been living in this shack since 1994, and some of my neighbours were allocated houses and some of us were left behind. We waited for our turn, but this is too much.” 26-year-old mother of one, Boitumelo Mbangi says, “What is wrong with us? We need houses just like everyone else,” She adds that they had a meeting to discuss matters confirming any house allocations for residents that were left behind but nothing has come of it. Emfuleni Local Municipality could not answer to the grievances of the community as officials referred Sedibeng Ster to the Gauteng Department of Housing.

Angry residents say they want houses and nothing less.

SHARPEVILLE. – Traffic department personnel and police had to work over time when Sharpeville came to a standstill last Wednesday morning. The Phuma’ Sibethane squatters camp residents together with Sharpeville residents barricaded roads with burning tyres, trash and stones demanding houses and better services. Motorists were forced to use alternative roads.

Ward 2 residents live with pigs Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The issue of health is a serious social problem most communities face. The residents of ward 2 were disgusted when they complained to the executive mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM, Councillor Gretha Hlongwane. They told her how filthy and unhygienic the hostel in ward 2 is, saying that the health of the kids playing in the area is being compromised. “There are pigs swimming in the exposed stormwater drain where kids sometimes play, disposable nappies lying around and dirt all over the place,” residents stated. Residents cited their frustration at the fact that no one ever takes responsibility for the pigs that are always going into their yards until something happens to the pigs. Another big problem stated was that of hostel residents throwing garbage all over the place just as they please. “We cannot live like this. Our kids will get sick if nothing is done.” Hlongwane stated that as much as it was the responsibility of the municipality to keep Emfuleni clean, residents also have an obligation not to turn their residential area into a filthy place by throwing garbage all over. Hlongwane felt obliged to make site visits in and around Ward 2 in response to complaints from residents.“I urge you to please keep this place clean at all times. I am going to send people to fix some of the problems you face, but the issue of cleanliness should be a priority to the people living here,” Hlongwane said. Asked about the hostel housing project which, to date, remains unfinished, Hlongwane stated that the issue had to be dealt with by the Gauteng Department of Housing as it was a project belonging to them. Hlongwane said she would invite the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements - MEC Jacob Mamabolo - to visit the hostel.

serious charge of murder. On Monday, prison officials recommended that the 27-year-old Pistorius receive three years “correctional supervision” through house arrest for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. How is this fair when you have many people that are languishing in jail for crimes that they did not commit? Pistorius should be man enough to take responsibility for what he admits he has done - killing Steenkamp. Taking responsibility earns you respect. We can’t be perfect all the time, we all make mistakes and we should take resposibilty for the after ef-

fects. When we accept responsibility we are accepting the blame for our actions and also accepting the responsibility for making improvements in our lives. Acountability is a measure of one’s self-worth and a true sign of strength and courage.Who would you have greater respect for - a person who takes responsibility for his/her actions, owns up to it and promises to do better in the future, or someone who perpetually denies any involvement in situations when it’s obvious they are responsible? Think carefully. Accepting responsibility is a sign of personal growth and

maturity. It is definitely not a sign of weakness. When you fail to accept personal responsibility for your actions a series of events follow over time. The consequences do not necessarily promote goal achievement and success in life but show that you are a mere weakling and a waist of our precious air. Whatever the outcome of the sentence on the Pistorius case following this article, it is clear for all to see that, like in the Animal Farm book, “Some animals are more equal than others.” Lerato...

lies. They requested that they get a clean slate from ELM and pay a flat rate. Mtambo said: “I have held meeting previously where I have stated to residents that the smart meters will be a solution to high water bills.” Residents asked ELM Executive Mayor Gretha Hlongwane why the municipality had contracted a debt collector to deal with her community as they were now receiving threatening messages from the company. “We are now being abused by people we do not even know, telling us to pay money to the municipality. When we go to the offices, the municipal officials don’t address us properly and give us very little help,” residents say.

Hlongwane said, “ It is unacceptable for you to be threatened. “As for municipal officials who are not willing to help the public, they will be dealt with.” Hlongwane, after admitting that the community is being billed on estimates, adds that there is ‘no such thing’ as a flat rate at the moment. “I am not the person who can make that decision. I would have to take it up with government at national level,” she said. Hlongwane ended by stating that she was happy that the residents were forthcoming about the problem of the high billing systems used by ELM.

DA joins application to save Midvaal from MDB merger SEDIBENG.- The North Gauteng High Court last week allowed the Democratic Alliance to join the action launched by the Midvaal Local Municipality to set aside the decision of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) to merge Midvaal and Emfuleni to create Gauteng’s fourth metropolitan municipality. During October 2013, the MDB announced its intentions to merge the two municipalities into one metro, claiming the necessary crite-

ria exists for this. The Democratic Alliance says that Midvaal is the only DA-run municipality in Gauteng, and will be swallowed, despite thousands of objections lodged in opposition. A statement released by the party say, “As a result, the High Court decided that the DA has a definite interest in the application, and that our arguments have merits that need to be borne in mind.

The DA expects an honest assessment of whether the criteria for the creation of a fourth metropolitan municipality does exist, or whether the ANC’s political gerrymandering will be allowed to wipe out the only municipality in Gauteng that delivers quality and decent services to all its residents. “The DA will continue in our fight to preserve the mandate as given to us by Midvaal’s residents.”

Winetasting FestiThabang - film Vaal to be held

producer Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. - Thabang Molibeli, a producer of films and documentaries, is finally pursuing his long-awaited film project. ‘Sharpeville 69 Bodies’ is inspired by the true events of the Sharpeville Massacre and also pays tribute to Nyakane Tsolo and to the MIPCOM Film Market. It also raises more funds for the project, which Molibeli aims to release in theatres soon. Modibeli has done various work in the South African film industry. “The project was initially developed as a four-part mini-series for SABC as SKOTI PHOLA 2008, but did not go through, causing me more problems and in the process losing me valuable friends and partners. “But I did not let that experience deter me. I then developed it as a feature film in 2012 and in 2014 I finally have a world-class feature script that is waiting to go into production once the necessary funds have been allocated for the trip to France through the DTI and ATTF, an organisation for film makers in the country who wish to take their projects abroad. It took me nearly eight years to get to this stage and I am grateful. The script was made possible by the NFVF, was written by Nomcebo Ngema and edited by Nomsa Mtambo,” says Molibedi.

Thabang Molibeli, film producer and documentarian, is about to grace the film industry in France. Photo: Mdudu zi Mathebula.

The young producer has developed a series of documentaries. Among those is ‘The Vaal Uprising’ to be broadcast next year. He has also produced a documentary based on the Sharpeville Massacre and is currently producing an action comedy, ‘Sharptown Angels.’ “I feel honoured and privileged to represent my township in such a prestigious event. We will also be doing a number of trips to the USA in November and in early 2015,” says the young film producer. The most outstanding upcoming work is the ‘Rythym of the River Stories’ from Lekoa. It’s a 5-part documentary series based on celebrating the heroes and events that put the Vaal on the map. This includes the Asinamali Boycott of September 3, 1984, the Sharpetown Swingsters, Black 5, DK Khunou and Vernon Molefe.

SEDIBENG.- With the last 2014 Sebokeng Premier Wine Festi-Vaal build up having been held at the Iketleng Pub, wine lovers are now anticipating the festival that will be held on the October 25th and 26th at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre. “The significance of holding the Premier Wine Festi-Vaal in Sebokeng is to position the venue and the area as one of the important calendar events in the Vaal and Gauteng, eventually nationally adding to the list of tourist attractions and features in the country that are patronised by international visitors as well,” says Project Manager Tshidi Mphatsoe.

“This year the festival will be held on the October 25 and 26. We are expecting a minimum number of 1500 to a maximum of 2500 visitors per day. The festival aims to expose Vaal residents to global trends and lure wine makers. “The venue capacity is 2500 people at any given time and includes ample and safe parking,” Maphatsoe concludes. The event is brought to you by Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Local Economic Development (LED) along with Rainforest Productions. For further information contact: (011) 8300 871 or email Lenah Shabangu @Emfuleni Local Municipality or Lopang Manyama @Rainforest Productions.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - All roads will lead to Cecil Oldridge Park for the much anticipated Vanderbijlpark Build It U/13 School Tournament. This annual tournament is scheduled to take place at the above mentioned venue on Sunday. Bophelong Primary Schools will battle for honour. The day will start with a fun walk for young and old. The tournament is part of Vanderbijlpark Build It’s social responsi-

bility. However, apart from development - the tournament is to promote mass participation both at schools and in the community. The organisers promise an exciting tournament with the participating schools ready for each other in the field of play come Sunday. Meanwhile, MCS Sedibeng Tournament is also scheduled to take place at Cecil Oldrige Park on October 25. The tournament starts with u/13 categories.

Nqoyiyana completes high performance race Jennie Dallas

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Watuni Canoe Club based on the Vaal River banks at the campus of the North West University grounds in Vanderbijlpark hosted the 20km training river race recently, to assist Gauteng paddlers to obtain the qualifying points required to achieve A grade status, with Hi Performance Feeds as the main race sponsor, supporting the development of the sport. The major Hansa Fish 80km race in October takes place in Cradock and paddlers participating in the event have to have A grade experience, as is the case with the internationally renowned Dusi Race in February annually. Lloyd Ngqoyiyana has shown

tremendous dedication and commitment working hard on flat water to achieve the required fitness standard in order to participate on rivers. Watuni Club members have taught him basic river skills, while his determination has seen him in a K1 (single canoe) at the river races, despite occasional swims to obtain the required experience, and grading. The race was a K1 race as the upcoming A grade races will also recognise the single category. Ngqoyiyana finished the 20km race in 1 hour 45 minutes, well within the qualifying required time, as the 24th K1 and 7th under 23 paddler, feeling very proud of his achievement and improvement over the past months.

There is no more respect for football in Sedibeng! Shooting From The Hip was taken aback by the attitude of some of the development coaches during the MCS Sedibeng Tournament held at Mohloli Secondary School on Sunday. Something is ‘EATING’ the development

SEDIBENG STER

What is ‘EATING’ Sedibeng coaches coaches in this region, based on the attitude and arrogance they displayed during the meeting. It’s clear – some people are out to destroy this tournament, which happens to be the best youth tournament in this region. How can one explain coaches that arrive late in the meeting and then proceed to behave like teenagers? To make matters worse, a few youngsters witnessed this unacceptable behaviour. This is affecting the development of football in this region. They no longer respect the beautiful game of football. What Shooting From

Cosmos hosts Cape Town Santos FC Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG.- Jomo Cosmos FC will host Cape Town Santos in the National First Division League match scheduled to take place at VUT’S Isak Steyl Stadium on Sunday. Kick-off time is 15:30. Ezenkosi have already played three games against Black Leopards, FC Cape Town and Golden Arrows at the venue, but all to a draw. However, Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono believes that it is a must-win game against Santos FC come Sunday. Cosmos is tenth on the log with seven points while Santos is in sixth position on the log with 10 points. This game promises to be the mother of all battles since both teams are desperate to collect maximum points to impro-

15

ve their position on the log. Sono believes this is the right time to start collecting maximum points to get in line with the teams at the top. Cosmos has been unfortunate to draw in games that they were supposed to win. They are one of the few teams in the National First Division that play attacking football. They will have to rely on the experience of Bamuza Sono if they entertain any hope of returning to their Absa Premier League status at the end of the season. Sono (Bamuza) was instrumental during last season when Cosmos missed the promotion play-offs by the skin of their teeth. His experience will be beneficial to the young Ezenkosi team if they are serious about making their way back to top flight football.

The Hip saw in that meeting were people who are bitter, angry and egotistical. The meeting was not supposed to be a platform from which to settle old scores. The problem with Sedibeng football is that development coaches are used by football administrators. Shooting From The Hip still doesn’t understand why some coaches behave the way they do. Yes, Tebello Kheswa was right – coaches have a choice to make: either to participate in the tournament or leave those who want to be part of the tournament alone. Sometimes we blame tournament organisers but the truth of the matter is that some development coaches are responsible. Point in case, Pooe Soccer Tournament is one of the biggest tournaments in this region but we don’t show

respect for it. Some of us come to the tournament - not with development as the aim, but to destroy this initiative. Coaches should stop blaming tournament organisers and do some introspection. The problem is not with tournament organisers but with ourselves. The truth of the matter is that we don’t do the same when we are invited to tourney in Johannesburg. We obey rules without question, but here at home coaches want to show their colleagues how powerful they are. Sick! This region is sick to say the least. It is no wonder that we are still without a professional team because our focus is wrong. These kids will hate us because we failed them over our egos.

ELFA accused of misusing funds Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The future of Sedibeng football hangs in the balance with strange ongoings in this region. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that once again Emfuleni Promotion League teams won’t get their prize money, as was the case last season. There are allegations of ‘misuse of funds’ within the association. These allegations have members of the interim committee and previous executive members pointing fingers at each other. The previous committee members claim that when they left office the balance in the association account was between R14 000 and R15 000, but now it seems the association has no money. To make matters worse, Sedibeng Ster Sport has also learned that some teams that participated in the Regional Promotion PlayOffs were baying for the blood of interim committee Chairman Philip Ndlovu. This was evident on Saturday when they

demanded their prize money. It was an ugly scene, with team officials insulting Ndlovu in front of spectators. However, when approached for comment about this matter, Ndlovu said it was amateurish for those officials to behave in that way. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that Master Zondo had to intervene to calm down these officials. Meanwhile, Sedibeng Ster Sport reported that Martin Mpholo is set to replace Philip Ndlovu as the Emfuleni Local Football Association chairman in the coming elections. The problem started when the teams demanded that a new committee be elected after the previous executive committee failed to meet their demands. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that Safa Sedibeng SAB Regional League teams also demand their prize money from the region. This was confirmed by the Real Barcelona FC official Dingaane Tshabalala. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that they have been waiting for last season’s prizes.

NWU Vaal secures ABC Motsepe League status

Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK.- At last Sedibeng will be represented in the ABC Motsepe League after the NWU Vaal gained second division status. This good news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by NWU Vaal football manager Thomas Thema. Thema said this is good for the development of football in Sedibeng - to have a team that plays in the Motsepe League. Thema added that it was long overdue for the institution to have a second division team. According to Thema they will play their league home games at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium. The league is expected to kick off in two weeks’ time and Thema says his team is ready to compete against the best in Gauteng. NWU Vaal will compete in the ABC Motsepe League in the Gauteng Stream. Many believe that Gauteng is the toughest stream compared to the other eight provinces. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that NWU Vaal intends to call all the Sedibeng development teams’ coaches and managers to the

meeting to see how they can work together. “This is not all about NWU Vaal but about Sedibeng football development and we urge

everyone to support the team. We will play our games in the township because we will be representing the Sedibeng community.

Expect these beautiful cheer leaders on the stands when NWU Vaal play their ABC Motse pe League matches at the George Thabe Stadium. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

I’m very excited because I spent sleepless nights to secure this status and now it is up to Sedibeng community to support the team. This team belongs to them and we expect them to come in big numbers to our games, especially when we play at home,” says Thema. For the past five years teams from this region have failed to gain promotion to the second division league. The last team that represented this region in the ABC Motsepe League formerly Vodacom League was Sebokeng Real Barcelona - before the club got relegated. Vaal Milano was the last hope for Sedibeng loving soccer after the team won the Safa Sedibeng SAB Regional League but only to disappoint at the promotion play-offs. There was no hope that this region would ever have a team in the second division. This might restore the standard of football in this region. In the past, Sedibeng used to have five teams in the second division before they were all relegated. VUT, Blue Waves, Zone 3 Cosmos, Vaal Ambassadors FC were five of the teams that represented Vaal in the Vodacom League.

National Lotteries Board opens applications for funding sports The National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to invite qualifying organisations that support the development of sports at grassroots level to apply for funding, says Charlotte Thabang Mampane, chief executive officer of the NLB. The scope of the funding programme is in line with government policy to support all sporting codes in South Africa. The NLB allocates a total of close to R2 billion each financial year in funding to various qualifying organisations covering all three sectors, including charities, arts and culture organisations and sporting entities. “We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all interested schools and clubs

to forward their application to the NLB as early as possible, observing the funding criteria and procedures to avoid disappointment. Failure to comply with the regulations and prescribed guidelines will result in the application automatically being disqualified,” says Mampane. “We would also like to reiterate the fact that annually the NLB receives requests for funding amounting to more than R70 billion, a figure that is well in excess of the funds available for distribution,” says Mampane. The NLB will give preference to sports clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1, 2 and 3) in poor, previously disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity-buil-

ding (Training of coaches and technical officials), universal access to facilities and provision or upgrading of access facilities for people with disabilities. “The government, through its various departments and agencies such as the NLB, will continue to support sports because it is an indispensable part of social cohesion and enhances physical and mental well-being,” says Mampane. “South Africa also demonstrated at the Common Wealth Games held recently in Scotland, that we have a wealth of talent and it is imperative that we support the development of our sporting talent from an early age,” concludes Mampane.

Application forms are available at the NLB head offices in Pretoria or online at www.nlb.org.za. The NLB will also conduct capacity-building exercises across the country to assist beneficiaries with limited resources to ensure that they meet all the requirements and are able to submit all the mandatory supporting documents properly formatted such as financial statements amongst others, in order to be considered for a grant. For additional information or to schedule an interview, please contact Odaho Sengani, senior communication officer on Odaho@nlb.org.za or (012) 432 1506/ 083 7536968.
