Horrific accident claims life VANDERBIJLPARK. - A man in his 30s was killed and another critically injured when their vehicle collided head-on with a truck on the Golden Highway in Vanderbijlpark on September 2. When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found the light motor vehicle in the middle of the road. The truck had stopped some distance away from the scene. The driver of the light motor vehicle had been ejected when it collided with the truck and had unfortunately succumbed to his severe injuries. The passenger was trapped inside the motor vehicle and was in a critical condition. Rescue workers had to use the Jaws-of-Life equipment to free the patient in a 30 minute rescue. Once freed, the patient received advanced life support and was transported to Baragwanath Hospital for urgent treatment. The driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries. He was treated by paramedics and transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care. The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations. * The names of the deceased and injured had not been released by the police at the time of going to press.

This is all that remained of the light motor vehicle after the collision with a truck.

Paedophile arrested for crimes in Vaal

SEDIBENG.- The Family Child Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) of the Vaal Rand arrested an alleged paedophile in KemptonPark, Johannesburg on Friday after several incidents in which he allegedly molested five teenage boys in Vanderbijlpark since last October. According to a police report one of the teenage boys (15) revealed to his father a week and a half ago that he had been molested by

the suspect. The father immediately reported the matter to the FCS unit and an investigation was immediately launched. Four other male victims (all 15 years of age) also came forward and disclosed their traumatic experiences. All these victims were from Vanderbijlpark but the police suspect that there might be many more victims in the Vaal Rand and Johannesburg area. The suspect (28) is a white male and lives in KemptonPark. He befriended the victims (also of white descent) through internet gaming (LAN). It is alleged that he then came to Vanderbijlpark and met the victims and their families. He would then interact with them and play internet games with them. His victims would introduce him to other friends

and he quickly won their trust and that of their parents. The suspect allegedly then continued visitations and took them fishing or gaming, to the cinema, and to a nearby small holding in Vanderbijlpark. He would also give them gifts such as I-pads, cellphones and computer tablets. The suspect would even drive as far as Potchefstroom to take the teenagers to rugby games and other sport activities they had to attend. The suspect would also come and fetch them in Vanderbijlpark to visit him at his home in KemptonPark. The suspect transported the victims in a blue Hyundai I10. The suspect allegedly then took matters further by showing the victims pornographic material and then he would make sexual suggestions to them. The suspect would then sexually as-

sault the victims and exploit them sexually in other ways. These incidents occurred inside houses as well as outside when he took them fishing. The youngest known victim was allegedly molested last October when he was 14 years of age. The suspect faces charges of rape, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual grooming and child abuse. He appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Monday. Warrent Officer Kinnie Steyn, media spokesperson, said police believe that there are more victims and they appeal to the public to come forward with information. Any information can be reported to the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Office Johan Reichert on 082 211 6963.

Job seekers defrauded by SDM employee Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - An administration assistant in the office of the Sedibeng District Municipality’s MMC for Corporate Services was apparently arrested for corruption and fraud recently. The suspect allegedly defrauded job seekers of hundreds of thousands of rands. The victims said they knew the suspect as a manager in the Human Resources Department. The desperate victims indicated that the suspect told them about 800 vacancies at the municipality that were vavailable. All job seekers were told to pay a deposit of R1

000 each. They apparently had to submit their CVs and she would put them on ‘top of the list’. After they were employed, there was another R5 000 per person to be payed. Three weeks after paying the R1 000 there had been no correspondence and the suspect apparently ignored their calls. They then went straight to the police and opened a case of fraud. The suspect was apparently arrested in front of her co-workers. Among the jobs she promised were secretary, cleaners and drivers. Farhad Safi, Acting Director: External Communications, confirmed that the suspect is an admininistration assistant in the

municipality who was questioned by Police. She appeared in the Vereeniging Courts the following day, August 29. The suspect told her employers she had not been charged as the magistrate did not expressly state the charge. She said she had to return to court on another date and that this has nothing to do with her work. Captain Funda confirmed that a suspect was arrested at her workplace. She was charged with corruption and fraud amounting to R9 000. She briefly appeared int the Vereeniging Magistrates Court and was granted R7 000 bail.

VUT students resume classes

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Feelings and reactions were mixed and intense among Vaal University of Technology (VUT) students who received letters that classes had been suspended. Students were removed from residences last week. Students were outraged particularly those that come from outside Sedibeng. Last week a security company was called in to remove students from residences, which they were required to vacate until further notice. The issue at hand was that students apparently accuse the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) of making only 40% of its money available as grants and the rest as loans, when they demand at least 75% as grants. This they apparently did not get from the government. They then went on the rampage, demanding that VUT provide or look for sponsors that could pay for their studies. “We are from Limpopo. It is difficult to contact our parents to collect us here. We don’t know how long it will take for the suspension to be lifted,” said some students. Kediemetse Mokotsi, VUT’s Manager of Corporate Affairs, says that Management and the Student Representative Committee (SRC) met on Tuesday and agreed that classes would resume on Wednesday. Students will, however, need to carry their student cards, in particular those that stay at the institutions’ residences, for verification.

VEREENIGING. - The medication suspected of being used as ARV’s and for TB, that was supposed to be in the safe hands of either a patienst or clinics, was found scattered along a road in Three River East last Tuesday. Some containers with the names of the patients and clinics, seem

to have been thrown away days ago. There was capsule powder on the ground when Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene last Tuesday. Among the containers of the tablets were Stavudine, Pharmapress, Cipla-lamivudine, to mentioned but a few. It was rumoured that this might have implications regarding the care-givers who went on strike

MEC visits still born child’s family Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING.-A few days after Sedibeng Ster shared the story of a young couple who lost their baby at the Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging,Gauteng MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu visited the Rakhajani and Thinani family after the stillborn was buried. “It is on behalf of the department that we share our deepest condolences with the families of Rakhajanie and Thinani,” said the MEC during her visit to the families. The visit was made, due to the fact that the little baby had passed on under

supervision of the hospital staff. The Dpartment says that a formal investigation has been launched and officials are taking the matter very seriously. The MEC had to visit the family to find out exactly what had happened from the moment the mother was admitted to hospital until the child was declared dead. A formal report will be released shortly after formal investigations have been conducted. All those involved in the incident will be questioned and steps will be taken. Aggie Thinani, the grandmother of the dead child, says that all they want is justice.

Girlfriend sets boyfriend on fire Mdudzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE.- Edmond ‘Mamitha’ Rolinyathi from Vergenoeg in Sharpeville suffered 3rd degree burns last week Sunday at midnight during a fight between him and his girlfriend. Rolinyathi remained in hospital for four days after the incident, which saw him in severe pain until he eventually passed away. He was incinerated by his girlfriend of four years after she splashed petrol on him. The 36-year-old is said to have had fought with his girlfriend as any boyfriend does but his family never thought. According to the family they never thought he would die in this manner. Nompi Rolinyathi, the deceased’s elder sister says she cannot believe what has happened to her brother. “It’s hard to belie-

ve my brother has passed on. I saw him suffering in hospital,” says a weeping Nompi. The family still does not know what the fight was about. Apparently just after Rolinyathi was set on fire he screamed for help and a neighbour came to help. 25-year-old former classmate of the suspect Majoro Mohono says he is still traumatised by what he saw on Sunday. “I saw him in flames, screaming for help. I had to act fast to help him,” says Majoro who covered the deceased with wet blankets to stop the fire. Majoro and another neighbour had to rush Rolinyathi to hospital since they could not wait for an ambulance. According to police the suspect was arrested and charged with murder. She appeared in court last Thursday.

NWU Vaal shines in criminal mock trials

VEREENIGING. - The Intercampus second and third year JUTA-NWU Criminal Mock Trial Competition annually enables the three campuses of the North-West University to showcase their students’ expertise in conducting a criminal mock trial. This year there was a buzz of excitement on the Vaal Triangle Campus as many students en-

thusiastically competed to see who would ultimately represent the campus at the semi-final and final held at the Potchefstroom Campus on September 8 and 9. In the end, the two teams that made it through consisted of Lucas May, Mariné Kruger, Bianca Gorman and Jorge Martins for the second years, and Andre Coleman, Ivan van

Zyl, Charlene Lerm and Jaco Kemp for the third years. Both teams performed exceptionally well. After the semi-final the results were Vaal Triangle Campus in first place, Mafikeng Campus in second place and the Potchefstroom Campus in third place. The best team from the campuses that came

first and second went on to the final. This saw the Vaal second years appearing on behalf of the state against the Mafikeng third-years appearing on behalf of the defence before Judge Leonie Windell in a case of common assault. Although the results of the final were extremely close, the team from the Mafikeng Campus was ultimately crowned as winners.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ The news that the Vaal University of Technology was recently temporarily closed combined with the statistics released by South Africa’s statistician General Pali Lehohla, which reveals that more black youth are without work, does not go down well with me. Mzansi has almost 3,4 million of jobless youth. The unemployment rate among youth [aged 15 to 34] increased from 32.7 per cent to 36.1 per cent between 2008 and 2014,” according to the latest Stats SA report on national and provincial labour market trends among the youth. Since the 2008 recession, the youth unemployment rate has been consistently higher than that of adults, by more than 20 percentage points. With young adults making up between 52 to 64 per cent of

the working population, they accounted for only 42 to 49 per cent of the employed. The report by Lehohla listed a variety of problems facing young people in the labour market. It included that many had not worked before, as well a high incidence of long-term youth unemployment. In 2014, close to two-thirds of young people were unemployed for a year or longer, while young people accounted for 90 per cent of those who are unemployed and have never worked before. As Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa puts it, employers need to rise to the challenge by taking on first-time employees and providing effective management- and mentorship support because, indeed, if given proper support and direction, employers will discover that the energy and enthusiasm of these young people can be harnessed to improve their businesses. It is true that there are not enough jobs

Government owes Gauteng municipalities SEDIBENG.- According to Gauteng Treasury’s Municipal Consolidated statement for August 2014, government owes the province’s metros and municipalities over R700 million. million respectively. Disturbingly, the city of Tshwane has no record of government debt for the period, while other municipalities, such as the West Rand, have little to no government, commercial or household debtors recorded in their age analysis. This indicates a serious billing crisis in these structures, which has long been ignored. A report delivered by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in parliament indicated that the government’s share of R93.4 billion in municipal debt is R4.1 billion. Gauteng is bearing the burden of this with almost a quarter of government debt in this province alone. Current programmes embarked on by the Gauteng COGTA department have not delivered the desired results. The DA called on the MEC to urgently call a meeting with all local government stakeholders in Gauteng to seek proper solutions for improving the debtor situation faced by municipalities. The constant growth in municipal debtors is causing cash flow problems for municipalities in the province that hampers their ability to deliver services.

for specific sectors that young people are trained in, but they also need to wake up as I think they also contribute to the fact that they are unemployed. The Vaal University of Technology issue is that the students apparently accuse the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) of making only 40% of its money available as grants and the rest as loans when they demand at least 75%. Yet again I ask: can’t an amicable solution be reached so that the students can go back to doing what they should be doing in the first place - study? Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Ma-

namela is right to be worried by the report of youth unemployment. It really tells a disturbing story, as it suggests there is a generation of black people who have lost out on acquiring skills. I put it to the powers that be, that something needs to be done and soon. We all need to play a part in promoting the employment of the young. 57 learners expelled from Gauteng schools Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. Rust-ter-Vaal Secondary School and Lakeside Estate Primary are some of the schools identified by Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi in his 100 days in office report as being dysfunctional schools. These would be schools that are performing under 80%, have problems concerning governance, security, leadership and communication and curriculum provisioning. ces and staff have been deployed to bring change to these schools. Lesufi says that these schools are monitored weekly and interventions adjusted accordingly. “Key interventions at these curriculum assessment practices by teachers are learner support programmes, teacher development and coaching programmes, the provision and training in curriculum compliance, governance and management compliance and performance, infrastructure development and furniture replacement where needed and textbook provision and teaching

aids,” Lesufi says. Within the first 100 days in office Lesufi has terminated the services of 30 educators and has expelled 57 learners. Of the 30 educators who have been dismissed, 17 were dismissed for absenteeism, 5 for improper conduct, 3 for Sexual Assault, 2 for mismanagement of funds, 1 for dishonesty, 1 for intimidation and 1 for contravention of policy. More than 50% of the 57 learners expelled from schools were expelled due to dealing/in possession of illegal substances, abuse/usage of illegal substances (Dagga, Nyaope, etc.).

ket of water to the toilet? Is there no dignity here?” asks a parent. The school has apparently also exhausted its maintenance allocations as they have to call a ‘drain surgeon’ over and over without any help. The school’s sewerage system is said to have aged so much that trees are growing in it and a total overhaul is needed. Majane Nhlapo, the school’s principal, referred all queries to the Province whose spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane says, “The Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lusufi has identified school infrastructure as one of a key prioritiy for the department. The MEC strongly believes in the principle that ‘sanitation is dignity’ and believes that no learner should be taught in conditions that deprives them of this dignity.” Sekhonyane

SHARPEVILLE.- Sharpeville’s Matsie Steyn - Kopanong Primary School’s sanitation system is a time bomb waiting to explode. Parents say that the school’s sewerage system which was built in the 50s cannot handle its current load and as a result teachers and pupils have to carry buckets of water to the toilet when nature calls. The stench is unbearable and algae surrounds the toilets. The problem has apparently been going on for almost three years. Parents are now concerned about the health of their children which is obviously in jeopardy. “The situation there is not conducive to learning or teaching. Imagine a teacher having to carry a buc-

People love services, not the government Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Mayor Simon Mofokeng has stated that people are more satisfied with the services they get from government than the government itself. “Local government is giving better quality services, and the people are happy with this. It is just the government or the officials they do not like. If one looks at the 10 pillars of government, you will notice that there is a shift in terms of service delivery,” says Mofokeng. He was giving a presentation at a policy formulation summit held by the Progressive

Professionals Forum (PPF) recently at the North West University. The summit had different students and professionals form commissions to discuss issues of interest such as transformation in higher education, reindustrialisation of Gauteng through strategic infrastructure development, and the transformation of the state and governance. PPF Sedibeng chairperson Andiswa Mosai says, “PPF is full of people who want to make a difference in the country. There was recently a racial attack at this university and this is why transformation is needed. We need to ensure that incidents of that nature are prevented.”

When addressing the issue of borders being softened to allow business transactions between South Africa and other nations Mofokeng said, “If we look at the kinds of products that are imported into the country, some of them can easily be manufactured here at home.” His opinion was that the country needed more producers instead of buyers. “We need to look at exporting more than importing. We are looking forward to the region becoming a river city as this will bring much needed development into the Vaal. This will make our businesses stronger and thus bring much needed economic transformation.” He added.

ELM shines again at Bontle ke Botle Awards

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Local Municipality and other municipalities in the province, have exhibited responsibility for continuously protecting the environment. The community wards, and schools under the theme ‘Bontle ke Botle’ (BkB) in the Environment Action Projects of Good Quality, shows commitment in water conservation, energy efficiency, greening, sustainable agriculture and water management. The aim of the BkB is community development and poverty alleviation to better the

country. The Provincial MEC for Agriculture, Rural and Economic Development Lebogang Maile awarded prizes to the best performing BkB Provincial Awards participants for the 2013/14 financial year. This prestigious function was hosted at The Lakes Hotel and Conference Centre, Benoni, on August 22. For the past five years there has been an improvement - with the prize money being ploughed back into environmental projects to ensure sustainability and create a worthy envi-

ronmental legacy for BkB. Maile indicated that R3 760 000 has been shared by the winners in the municipality and at provincial level. At least 43 wards and 58 schools shared R2 425 000. The purpose is for the wards and schools to inject this money into existing environmental projects or initiate new ones. The first-prize winners in each category will represent the Gauteng Province in the Greenest Municipality Competition. This will be co-ordinated by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

An amount of R270 000 has been shared by three rural wards and four rural schools. Maile applauded the communities for upholding the fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment. In Emfuleni Local Municiality (ELM), Ward 31 won R50 000 for first prize and Lesedi went home with second prize - R45 000. Emfuleni Ward 33 and 16 received R20 000 and R15 000 respectively. Rutasechaba won R25 000 and Ratanda Primary received R20 000 for their new schools. Eureka clinched R10 000 for the fifth prize.

TTrees rees pplanted lanted ffor or A rbor D ay Arbor Day Lazarus Dithagiso

MEYERTON. - Flexilube PTY (LTD) distributed 350 fruit and shade trees among disadvantaged residents in Sicelo, Meyerton last Tuesday. The house of Elizabeth Tsoeu was the first to receive shade and fruit trees. The company is supporting Sustainable Development and Climate Change Awareness this Arbour Month through Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA). “There have been many developments in Midvaal ever since,” said Irene von Knoblauch, managing director of Flexilube. It started with the development of a new neighbourhood of low-cost housing in Sicelo. “The existing houses are often located in dusty and barren areas with limited greening activities,” she said. With the help of Flexilube, trees were contributed to the greening of Sicelo. Trees offer many benefits to residents which include capturing dust, sequestering carbon, acting as windbreaks and generally increasing the value of housing where trees are planted. The support of Flexilube helps raise awareness about climate change, said Tinashe Mutoredzanwa, FTFA programme manager.

SASOLBURG. - Executive Emfuleni mayor Gretha Hlongwane hosted the second annual Vaal Golf Challenge to raise funds for disadvantaged tertiary students to further their studies in their respective fields. The event also built a platform from which government representatives, the public and private sector, were provided with an opportunity to network. The event was held at the Maccauvlei Golf Club. This year’s Mayoral Golf Challenge was themed ‘PUTT For The Child Through Education’. Hlongwane said, “We live in a world with many challenges. The hope of the youth to break the cycle of poverty is gradually di-

minishing due to limited acces to education. “We give bursaries annually to the tune of R1 million rands for undergraduate studies.” Hlongwane thanked all the sponsors for their commitment to helping the young individuals who will be awarded the bursaries,” concluded Hlongwane. The organiser of the event - Kabelo Makhafula - states that the event would not have been a success without the companies that came on board in support: "I would like to extend a word of thanks to Vodacom, Sita, General Cable, Rand Water, GTA, Sedgars, Sekela Xabiso and Klipdrift.” Makhofala said a substantial amount of money was raised for the Mayor’s education trust fund.

VEREENIGING. - To mark the end of Women’s Month, Social Development Department Probation Services Sedibeng hosted a powerful girls’ empowerment workshop. The event was held at Hoërskool Vereeniging. The programme started with young girls marching in the streets of Vereeniging against human trafficking, rape and child abuse on Saturday. The workshop is the brainchild of Social Work manager Khumo Kgomoeswana, who states that girls’ empowerment is very important. “Each year, 40 girls from schools around Sedibeng are selected to form part of the ‘Sedibeng Young Girls Forum.’ “This programme was formed to rebuild the moral fibre of young girls, so that they can begin to build their confidence and also set and achieve goals. I believe that we should start to uplift girl children from a young age, which is why we have guests who are professionals in their fields, such as Charted Accountancy, Engineering, Fashion and Law. They will be giving career guidance and ultimately become mentors to these girls.” Tshepiso Matsoso from the Victim Empowerment Programme states that another issue that needs to be dealt with amongst young girls is the ‘sugar daddy’ syndrome. “Young girls fall prey to older men just because they need to support their families. But we want to let them know that it is only through education that they can

succeed.” 16-year-old Boitumelo Rantsolase from Katleho Impumelelo Secondary School says, “I became part of the forum last year. My responsibility is to help my peers at school with regards to everything we are taught at the forum. I tell them about the importance of hygiene, leadership, confidence and hard work,” Rantsolase concludes.

These include Grade R classrooms, ablution blocks, and extra classrooms for some of the crowded schools and a kitchen. Five schools are receiving incentivebased infrastructure in the form of a library, a Combi court and computer labs. 888 teachers are receiving teacher training in Maths, English, Accounting and Physical Science. 242 learners with eye-problems received spectacles. Lydia Thoabala, a learner from Barnard Molokaone, said “I am very happy with the new toilets because the current toilets are very close to their classroom and the smell is very bad.” The partnership between the Free State Department of Education and Kagiso Shanduka Trust recognises that excellence in education requires a holistic approach to address the needs of South African schools. Lies and back-stabbing are within Safa Sedibeng REC’s blood

Lies and back-stabbing is rife in the Safa Sedibeng Executive Committee! Shooting From The Hip must admit that our football was much better during Molefi Oliphant’s era as the president of Safa Sedibeng (formerly Safa Vaal). The only thing the current Safa Sedibeng Executive Committee knows is to spread stinking lies, and back-stabbing.

For example, if the suspension of the Safa Sedibeng Regional Secretary Star Hlongwane was based on football why didn’t they make it public instead of running around with a suspension letter to give it to individuals who would leak it to the press? Safa Sedibeng President – Xolani Mtumtum and his bunch of sidekicks are cowards! Shooting From The Hip is quite aware that Hlongwane’s suspension letter is in possession of some of my colleagues in the media. Interesting! If Hlongwane’s suspension is justifiable, why don’t Mtumtum and his committee make a press statement to let affiliates know of this? Shooting From The Hip is also aware that at one stage Hlongwane and Mtumtum were close friends and for some reason they are now

in opposition camps. These cores and camps are killing our football big time. Shooting From The Hip challenges Mtumtum and his executive committee to call a press conference to announce Hlongwane’s suspension, rather than hiding behind the walls, unless his suspension took place at the nearby tavern. Mtumtum and Hlongwane owe the local football frateninity an explanation as to what transpired for their relationship to have turned this sour. Or is this still the Safa President Danny Jordaan FACTOR? Gentlemen, please have enough balls to tell us what really happened because this is affecting the development of football in this region. Why dont Mtumtum and his committee have the balls to call a press conference to set the record straight with regards to the suspension as, for now, it remains specu-

lation until Hlongwane and Shooting From The Hip receives correspondence from Safa Sedibeng. Shooting From The Hip is sick and tired of running stories based on rumours, somebody must be brave enough to come out and inform the media about Hlongwane’s suspension. It won’t help for Mtumtum and his committee to run with that suspension letter without giving it to relevant people. These secret football meetings in this region are taking our football ten years back as this is where the downfall of football administrators in this region is planned. Shooting From The Hip challenges Safa Sedibeng President Xolani Mtumtum to come out and put the record straight about Hlongwane’s suspension.

Heritage soccer tournament begins

Zacharia Nale

EVATON. - Kgogi Sports Foundation will host the annual Heritage Knock-out Soccer Tournament at the Behemen Rovers FC soccer ground, kicking-off this Saturday. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by tournament coordinator Mondli Nkosi. This year’s tournament will see 16 senior soccer teams around Gauteng battling for honour over the next two weeks. According to Nkosi the tournament forms part of Heritage Month celebrations. However, apart from celebrating Heritage Month, Nkosi says the tournament is also part of Kgogi Sports Foundation’s bid to help improve the standard of sport in this region. Nkosi says the tournament also involves junior soccer teams and they have already started with their programme over the weekend. This is one of the biggest tournaments

in Gauteng with every year seeing Sedibeng coming to a standstill whenever it plays. The winner will smile all the way to the bank with a cheque of R25 000 for being the champions, while the runner-ups will walk away with R10 000. Third place will receive R7 000 for their efforts and fourth place will get R4 000. Nkosi was quick to point out that the tournament is not all about winning but bringing teams from all over the Gauteng to come and participate toward the development of football. “Look, if there are teams that come here just because they see prize money, then they are in the wrong competition. This tournament is not about winning but about making a difference in the form of entertainment. There will also be coaching clinics as part of the programme on the day of the finals,” says Nkosi.

SEDIBENG. - Sensei Papi Maqabe has qualified to represent South Africa in the Karate World Cup scheduled to take place in Japan in 2016. Maqabe achieved this feat after he qualified during the recent World Karate Tournament in Durban. He was the only South African fighter in the middle weight who finished in the top eight after his teammate was eliminated. No doubt Maqabe is following in the footsteps of Sensei Papi Mokoena, who was the first Sedibeng fighter to represent South Africa in the World Karate Cup. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Maqabe says he wants to continue where Mokoena left off.

He acknowledged the fact that Mokoena had helped him shape his karate career and the results are there for everyone to see: “I could not believe it when I was the only South African fighter remaining in the top eight. I came to this tournament well prepared and hard work paid off. But having said this, I should stress that people contributed to my success, and Sensei Papi Mokoena is one of those people. He played the most important part in my career.” Maqabe’s only stress is how to raise funds for the trip to Japan. He appeals to Sedibeng companies, business people and community to help to raise funds for transport and accommodation, to mention but a few things.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Jomo Cosmos, otherwise known as ‘Ezenkosi’, will be out to avenge their over-the-weekend defeat at the hands of FC Cape Town. Ezenkosi welcome FC Cape Town at the VUT’s Isak Steyl Stadium in the National First Division League match on Saturday. The kick-off will be at 15:00. Cosmos will come into this encounter having suffered a 3 - 0 defeat at the hands of Milano United on Saturday. Ezenkosi still ha-

ve to register their first win of the National First Division. They have already played three games, drawing two of them against newly promoted Highlands Park FC and Black Leopard, before they lost ground to Milano United FC over the weekend. This is a must-win game for Ezenkosi coach, Jomo Sono and his charges if they entertain any hope of returning to top-flight football at the end of the season. The club was one of the most feared outfits in the Absa Premier Soccer League before they were relega-

ted two seasons ago. Some of the household names the club produced in the past include the likes of Mark Fish, Philimon Masinga, Pitso Mosimane, Sizwe Motaung, Thomas Midigage, Augustine Makalakalane and many others. Some of these above-mentioned players went to ply their trade overseas while some played for Bafana Bafana. Cosmos is well-known for their physical intimidation in local football; however, lately, they seem to have become “pushovers.” In the past most of the opponents would

spend sleepless nights knowing they would be facing mighty Cosmos with its intimidating figures at the back, such as Andrew Raputla, Collin Ntleko, Lucky Molefe, to mention but a few. Sono is still adamant that his team will bounce back strongly when they face FC Cape Town this Saturday. “We have played very well but we have been unlucky in all three games we played. We can’t fault these boys because they put in lots of effort, but as they say luck is not always on our side,” says Sono.

Mkhonto Masters Cup kicks off

Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - The Mkhonto Masters Cup kicked off at the dusty Small Farm soccer grounds over the weekend. This annual soccer tournament is organised by well-known businessman Mkhonto in conjunction with the Sedibeng Regional Masters Football Association.

The tournament saw some ex-soccer stars and various soccer players competing against each other for honour at the end of the tournament. The association’s publicist Martin Mpholo says the tournament is played to keep these ex soccer stars fit and together. Picks Masters beat Kanana Masters 3 - 0 in the opening match of the tournament.

The rest of the results: Cwebezela 2-1 Sebokeng Dortmund, Real Mighty 6-1 Vereeniging, Mighty Masters 4-1, Sesonke, Vivianne Masters 6-0, Dora Masters, Sweepers Masters 6-5 Kingdom Masters (penalties), Ayifuniwena Masters 1-0 Small Farm Masters, Majakathata Masters 5-2 Miami Masters.

This weekend fixtures: First game starts at 10:00 at Small Farm grounds. Ayifuniwena Masters vs Vivianne Masters Cwebezela Masters vs Mighty Masters Real Sweepers Masters vs Picks Masters Majakathata Masters vs Real Mighty Masters.
