Man slays sick mother Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - A 22-year-old murder suspect apparently couldn’t stomach looking helplessly on while his mother fought for her life in sickbed. On Monday, he apparently decided to end her suffering by force, alleged a neighbour. Another neighbour says the deceased had been fighting for her life for months. No recovery was in sight. She was visited daily by Dirang ka Kagiso Care Centre to wash her and feed her. After the ordeal, the suspect approached the neighbour, saying, “I have ‘dropped Ma-greeza’,” meaning, ‘I have killed my mother.’ He left and went back to the house. The neighbour says they later followed him after they realised smoke was billowing from the home. When they arrived, the suspect had alrea-

dy locked himself in one of the burning rooms. They screamed for help while trying to control the fire. Emfuleni Fire and Rescue arrived as community members fought to control the blaze. The mother was found lying dead in a pool of blood on the floor. Police and paramedics arrived and she was declared dead. A neighbour said the suspect was found hiding above the ceiling. Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said Police are investigating a case of murder and arson. She said the owner of the house - Tompi Elizabeth Mendeshi (42) - was found murdered. The cause of death is as yet unknown as Police await the post mortem report. Steyn said a 22-year-old suspect was arrested and detained. He will appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court soon.

VEREENIGING. - A truck carrying steel capsized last Tuesday morning on the Barrage Road when the driver failed to control the bakkie. This caused him to land on the other side of the road. The truck was damaged and the canopy was lying next to the bakkie with all the steel scattered all over. There were only two people in the truck. The expectation would be that they were checked by medical personnel but, instead, they dusted themselves off and continued picking up their goods. Neither of them weashurt in the accident. When Sedibeng Ster approached they did not want to give their names, say where they were heading or where they had come from. Police could not confirm whether the goods on the truck were stolen. Meanwhile on the morning of August 13 a cargo-truck driver also lost control, apparently after falling asleep in the middle of Boy Louw Road near Vitro. He was apparently driving from Mpumalanga to Newcastle. The man is aged between 30 and 35.

Speaker of Council Sedibeng District Municipality Cllr. Busisiwe Modisakeng Message from the Speaker of Sedibeng District Municipality: “If you strike a woman, you strike a rock”

Every year on 9 August we celebrate Women's Day in South Africa, a public holiday that pays homage to the women of our nation; - the mothers, the wives, the sisters and the daughters who fought tirelessly against the tyranny of the Apartheid government. Inaugurated in 1994, along with a free, democratic South Africa, the public holiday commemorates a 1956 protest lead by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. To rise up against the legislation that required black South Africans to carry the "pass" (special identification documents which infringed on their freedom of movement during the Apartheid era), approximately 20 000 women from all over the country took to the streets of Pretoria – many carrying the children of their white bosses on their backs – to stage a peaceful march to the Union Buildings. After dropping off bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at Prime Minister J.G Strijdom's offices, they stood in silence for thirty minutes. A song was composed in honour of this momentous occasion, “Wathint' Abafazi Wathint' imbokodo!” “If you strike a woman, you strike a rock”) An inspiring display of political strength, female solidarity and inner fortitude, the march on August 9 1956 is both a reminder of the great women who helped mould South Africa and the trailblazing women who continue to lead the country forward. Sedibeng District Municipality dedicate a month long programme to celebrate the unwavering and commitment of women to their role in struggle, for the emancipation of women. This year's national theme: “60th anniversary of the Women's charter as part of the 20 years of Freedom, Moving Women's Agenda Forward!” The Pan African Parliament which will also pay tribute to the PanAfrican Women's Organization and its

Month

role in liberating SouthAfrican women. The month of August is to celebrate the gains made by South Africa in changing the lives of South African women. The main event on the 09 August will take place in Durban. The Department of Arts and Culture, as the lead department of Women's Month, will l also launch the 20 Best Moments for Women during August. These key events mark achievements by exceptional local women and the gains made by all South African women. Issues of violence against women are still way too prevalent in a country that has come so far in the fight against discrimination, and the need to use the day as a point of advocacy and to shine the spotlight on the savvy sisters who challenge the notion that having XX chromosomes makes you weaker or less worthy is paramount. So, while there are thousands of courageous females showing the world how absolutely amazing women can be, flying the flag for the bright, the brainy and the brilliant, and serving as a source of inspiration for the masses

Remaining events in the month long programme:

Women will get an opportunity to share and discuss various issues that require attention of government, private sector and civil society. And to celebrate sixty years since the historic march and twenty years of democracy nominated women will be given awards. Time: 10h00 Venue: TBC Contact: Tommy Maleka 079 871 4497 Kate Plank 082 908 8316

An empowerment workshop looking at various development issues including women & family law, young mothers development and the role of women in local government will be hosted. Time: 10h00 Venue: Banquet Hall, Vereeniging Contact: Lilian Kolisang 082 4840 732

The main focus of this day is to encourage and appreciate women. The day also aims to initiate more effective actions to safeguard the rights of women in the society. A month dedicated to women, it is celebrated to inspire women and honour their achievements. This month also sees men honouring the women in their lives, be it their mother, sister, daughter or friend, by giving them a gift as a token of respect, love and care. The month is observed at the United Nations with a specific theme each year. For the International Women's Day 2014, the theme is "Inspiring Change". It aims to influence and strengthen the international community's commitment to put an end to violence against women. It intends to introduce a positive change to balance the status of women and men in an unequal world.

The intention of this programme is to identify needy families that do not have parents due to death, and to arrange some available government social services in order to provide on-going support and in cases where special interventions are necessary that such could be arranged.

What will be a celebration without remembering those who are most vulnerable in our society; the elderly women, custodians of our community. A programme to celebrate the remarkable lives of aged women in honor of the great sacrifices they've made to keep the fabric of society tight.

Rotting corpse found behind stadium Pinky Mofokeng

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The badly decomposed body of a man in his late 30s was discovered behind Isak Steyl Stadium last Thursday at around 3:30 by men walking nearby. It is alleged that the men were on their way to a scrap yard when they were greeted by an unpleasant smell coming from the body. They alerted VUT security who then called the police. On arrival police found the man lying in the veld on his side with a black bag over his head. With him were plastic bags containing his belongings and a pack of cigarettes. It is not clear where the man had come from or where he was heading, but it is suspected that he could have been

lying there for approximately three to four weeks. He had no visible marks on his body and his flesh was eaten by contrasts of hot and cold weather. Emergency personnel certified him dead on the scene before he was taken to the Sebokeng Hospital mortuary. It was also difficult to identify the man due to the fact that he was badly decomposed. When he was found he was wearing blue jeans and a grey sweater with white ‘tekkies.’ Police spokesperson Kinnie Steyn confirms that a formal inquest has been opened and that the man had no documentation with him. Anyone who is missing a loved one can contact Captain Maleti on (016) 910 9000.

The unknown body was found be hind Vanderbijlpark’s Isak Steyl Sta dium.

‘Izinyoka’ dead after stealing copper Pinky Mofokeng

VEREENIGING. - ‘Izinyokas’ are urged by the SAPS to stop stealing copper cables because many of them end up dead in the process. This comes after a 30-year-old Lesotho national was electrocuted as he was trying to steal copper. He died on the morning of August 8 at the corner of Assegai Street and Ring Road behind Eurospar in Three Rivers. Motorists and most companies were affected by ‘load-shedding’ as the copper cable was cut. Most robots stopped working. niging Police were called to the scene and on arrival found the man lying face down in the veld with a bolt-cutter in his hand. Nobody had noticed him as he was digging up all the cables. Apparently, someone was helping him dig up the cables. It is alleged that a man claiming to be the deceased’s cousin called police after he saw what had happened. As a result of copper theft the man sustained serious burn wounds, according to the police. His lower body was badly burned and his bones were visible. Emergency personnel were also called to the scene and certified the man dead. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda said, “These perpetrators should stop stealing copper. They are dying every week and it needs to stop.”

Taxi violence leaves four dead Pinky Mofokeng

PALM SPRINGS. - Johannesburg route taxi commuters were left stranded on Tuesday morning following a shootout on Monday afternoon between two taxi associations in Palm Springs. Community members and passengers coming out of Palm Springs Mall had to run for cover as bullets flew. It is alleged that three taxis from an association in Johannesburg ambushed a group of security guards hired on August 11 by the Vaal Wits Taxi Association to protect their route. The association wanted to take the Palm Springs to Johannesburg rank and allegedly seized 22 taxis and intimidated anyone who was against them. After the Vaal Wits Taxi Association told them to remove their taxis from the rank they ganged up on them. All hell broke loose as Falcon Street came to a standstill on Tuesday when the men started shooting randomly, forcing community members to run to the nearest hiding place. On the same day eight of the Johannesburg association men were arrested. Five were injured and taken to the Sebokeng Hospital under police guard. Four people were shot dead, including a security guard. According to national Police spokesperson Lungile Dlamini, 12 firearms were confiscated from the

security guards, 11 rifles and a handgun. “More arrests are underway and the taxi violence is under investigation. Cases opened against the men are murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to property as many taxis were damaged during the shootout,” Dlamini says. According to a taxi owner who did not want to be named due to fear of being intimidated, more than 15 armed men jumped out of the three taxis and started shooting randomly. As one security guard tried to open fire, they shot him in his forehead and took his firearm. The suspects will appear in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court soon.

SEDIBENG. - History repeated itself when shops belonging to foreigners all over Sedibeng were looted last week by angry members of the community. This is subsequent to a man losing his life for stealing an item (cooking oil) costing less than R20. The man, whose name was released as Josiah Ngwenya (28), was allegedly shot in the head by a shopkeeper during an argument. As Police arrived at different areas where looting had taken place, they found that considerable damage had already been sustained. Shops had been broken into, money and groceries stolen and equipment seized by rampaging community members. “We want all foreigners to leave, they have no right to kill our people,” some said. Evaton Police spokesperson Captain Tshifiwa Mitileni said, “So far 103 foreign national’s shops have been closed down. The shooting suspect sustained serious injuries when he was beaten up by commu-

nity members as he was trying to flee the scene. He is currently out of hospital in police custody facing a charge of murder. The gun used to commit the murder was found at the home of a taxi owner who tried to help the suspect flee and the taxi owner is also being charged with possession of an unlicenced firearm.”

Mitileni added that some foreign shop owners have approached Police stating that they would like to go back to the community. The different shop owners apparently say they are willing to help the family with the burial of the victim. Mitileni confirms that 53 people have been arrested and only seven were denied bail.

‘Lova Lova’ stokvel ends in tears Pinky Mofokeng

BOPHELONG. - A sobbing Zandi Khubeka (40) could not hold back her tears after young men gained entry to her home by cutting her fence and robbing her of approximately R20 000 at gunpoint before dissappearing into thin air. Khubeka, a Muvhango Extension 15 resident, claims it was her turn to host the ‘Lova Lova Stokvel’ which took two days recently before she was robbed. Everything apparently went according to plan until dawn when she and her friend Meke Lebitsa were woken by a touch. Two men had apparently forced themselves into the house where they found the two friends sleeping in Left: Zandi Khubeka could not hold back tears after two men broke in and stole the R20 000 she had made in the ‘Lova Lova’ Stokvel. the bedroom. They demanded the box that contained the money that had been collected from the stokvel. When Zandi resisted one of them allegedly stepped on her neck and pistol-whipped her across the face. Lebitsa claims she told her friend to give them the money because they were aggressive and intended to harm them if she refused. The suspects then told the two friends to hide their faces in the blankets while the other one was searching the house for valuable items. They apparently took a plasma TV and two cell phones. Lebitsa says, “Those men were very aggressive. I think someone who knew Zandi sent them to take the money. We were very afraid because the two men were very rude. I am just grateful to God that they did not hurt us even though they took my friend’s money”.

VANDERBILPARK. - Congratulations are in order for Kingsol Chabalala, former Emfuleni Local Municipal Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, who has expressed his excitement about being nominated and finally becoming a member of the Gauteng Legislature. This comes after Chabalala’s steady political career of a little over five years. Chabalala states that, as an MP, he will be able to communicate issues affecting the community to relevant bodies on a provincial level. “Being a Member of Parliament comes with more responsibility. For me, this means that the number of people I serve has increased. Therefore increasing the proximity of my overall decision-making.” Chabalala says that, as a leader, he will continue engaging people about the petitioning method, as he condemns any violent actions from the community. Chabalala continues to state that as an MP, his priority is to ensure that Gauteng becomes an open opportunity society for all. “I am currently representing Emfuleni North. I will be driving the issues of the people to relevant structures on provincial level.” Chabalala concludes.

Sedibeng demarcation battle continues Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG.- The Midvaal Local Municipality’s legal battle to remain a local municipality and not be absorbed into a larger Metro region with Emfuleni and Sedibeng Municipalities is still underway, amidst discussions of reaching an out-of-court settlement. The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) concluded public hearings with a

proposal, made last year, to merge three of Gauteng’s municipalities, Emfuleni, Sedibeng and the only DA run municipality Midvaal. The merger, which will form a metropolitan council, will take effect in 2016. With the formation of the metropolitan municipality, the Sedibeng District Municipality will fall away. In addition Lesedi Local Municipality which is also part of Sedibeng

will be excluded from Sedibeng District municipality and be included into Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Midvaal Local Municipality Media Liaison Officer Aaliyah Dangor says that in July, the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) presented Midvaal Local Municipality with an out-ofcourt settlement offer, and the Municipality has since responded with a counter-propo-

sal. “The MDB was expected to respond within 7 days, but given the logistical complexities of communication amongst the multi-member board, they have requested an extension until August 19. Any submission made by the MDB thereafter will be duly considered by Midvaal Local Municipality. If a settlement cannot be reached, a court date will then be set,” she says.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ Nyaope o thabile! What took place last week around Sedibeng with the looting of foreign nationals’ businesses is humiliating. I believe that nothing more can be said on the subject as we have all come to realise that these are pure criminal acts influenced by poverty and starvation from our people. I fail to understand what it is that makes a whole community raise their arms to foreign nationals, all because of stolen cooking oil. It is horrible that a person died because of this but did we have to go on a rampage? Couldn’t we let the law take its course like civilised people?

This is inhumane!

The inhumane and degrading treatment of African foreign nationals is a threat to democracy and freedom in South Africa. Our brothers and sisters on the African continent played an important role in the achievement of democracy and freedom in South Africa, yet at the slightest offence we resort to making their lives a living hell in this country. This is pure Xenophobia. Xenophobia is defined as the deep dislike of non-nationals of a host state. Its manifestation is a violation of human rights. The movement of people across boundaries has caused and continues to cause problems between nationals of host states and non-nationals. This issue is a more complex one which involves many other factors. One

cannot take a simplistic view of international migration and xenophobia. Attitudes towards foreigners among many South Africans are dominated by perceptions that their presence in the country holds great cost and no benefit for society, which is wrong. These assumptions are largely untested and misleading. There is a growing perception that immigrants from Europe are bona fide investors whereas all African immigrants are illegal. This colours the response and treatment meted out by citizens and more importantly government officials. Unrealistic expectations have been created in the minds of the population and now the logical scapegoat would be that foreigners are taking all the promised jobs, houses etc. Our leaders bear a responsi-

bility to actively discourage expressions of anger or hostility towards foreigners. As we look at pictures of the situation that took place last week we realise that only criminal elements and the poor (in particular ‘nyaope’ smokers) were delighted with the free-for-all situation. South Africans need to realise that not every black foreigner is an illegal immigrant. We need to stand up, stop being ‘cry babies’ and work hard for what we think we deserve the same way that the foreigners are doing and have been doing since their arrival in this country. We can all take a leaf out of their book. Meanwhile, Nyaope yena o thabile ka dijo tsa mahala! Sies. Lerato...

the regional food import bill continues to increase while regional agriculture production decreases.” 30-year-old Queen Mafojane said that since the formation of their Co-op, Divine Green Primary Agricultural Co-op, in 2012, she and her business partners were able to sustain their agricultural business. “Although we are not able to make a lot of money as yet, we are able to feed all of our families,” she said. Morolong thinks that, although unusual, the agricultural sector was a fast- growing one and that more and more opportunities are becoming available for the youth. The event ended with three commissions being formed where people got to find out about training, finance and marketing aspects of the agricultural sector.

SEBOKENG. - The youth last week attended the Emfuleni ‘Youth in Agriculture Summit’ as Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) partnered with different stakeholders such as Department of Labour, Vaal University of Technology and Youth in Agriculture. The event was held at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex. In his keynote address on behalf of ELM’s Executive Mayor Greta Hlongwane, Councillor Abel Morolong stated that Agriculture had been identified as an economic pillar in the Emfuleni economic development strategy document. Morolong further added that the increased participation by the youth is vital. “It is necessary for the youth of the region to facilitate food and nutrition security, since

Biggest career expo in country held in Sasolburg More than 20 000 learners were enthralled by the fascinating world of mathematics, science, engineering and technology at this year’s Sasol Techno X. Learners from seven provinces and even two schools from Maseru in Lesotho, were captivated by modern technology and experiments on exhibition, such as the Kalahari Scientist, entertaining Grade 9 – 12 students with mild explosions, chemical reactions and cool experiments. MEC for Environment, Tourism and Economic Affairs, Msebenzi Zwane, said during the official opening ceremony that he is honoured to be part of the 14th Sasol Techno X. “I am inspired by the proactive and strategic leadership that Sasol is taking, in response to the challenges associated with youth development. As a science literate society, future generations continue to improve upon modern advances that benefit everyone,” he said. Jonathan Hartley, an educator who holds a Bachelor of Science, got into his Kalahari Scientist persona to share scientific knowledge taking an interesting and different approach. “I love to see the students’ faces after the demonstrations – a look that I experienced many years ago, when my passion for science started,” said Hartley. For students who would like to pursue a career in aviation, the Realflight 2000 – a simulator that utilises both physical and emotional senses gave them a real sense of what it feels like to fly. Students also had an opportunity to attend a career guidance lecture to gain insights into various careers such as flight engineering, ground crew operations and air traffic control.

Techno X, Sasol’s flagship career expo, is the largest career guidance exhibition of its kind in the country. The aim of the expo is to encourage students to explore the wide range of exciting disciplines and career choices that mathematics, science and technology offer. Seven universities, three universities of technology and five FET Colleges exhibited, sharing information on courses on offer to pursue specific careers. Industry, government, business and organisations showcased fields covering science and technology, engineering, mathematics and finance, astronomy and aviation, the environment, geography and geology, medicine and teaching aids for educators. According to Louis Fourie, Senior Vice President: Sasol Sasolburg, Sasol Techno X visitors will play an important role in the development and growth of the country. “We want to ignite a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and inspire the next generation of leaders. The Sasol Techno X is a platform that will not only benefit Sasol, but the community and industry as a whole,” he concluded.

Football has become a boxing ring! Recently our football fields have turned into a boxing ring! There are more ‘fists’ flying than footballs, to say the least. Point in case, recently the PSL launched the MultiChoice Reserve League for u/17 and u/18 consisting of the PSL Clubs’ academies, but not many welcomed the league. Since the launch of this youth league two weeks ago, much has been said and written which is not good for the development of football in this country. As usual it seems there is a squabble between Safa and PSL about the league because it doesn’t involve Safa academies. Safa also claims they were not informed about the initiative. However, Shooting From The Hip is not surprised about this, as there is known to be bad blood between the two organisations.

They always say when two bulls fight, what suffers most is the grass, in this case the development of football. The league is a good initiative but Shooting From The Hip believes that Safa academies should also be included. The explanation for this is simple - there are academy leagues that involve both Safa and PSL Club Academies. The bad blood between Safa and PSL has nothing to do with football, but with grown men who allow their egos to rule. I don’t think this is the start that the new Bafana Bafana

Schools receive donations from Build it Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - The primary schools of Bophelong and Seeiso were recently among the first to be visited by Build It, which donated cement materials and soccer kits. Most government schools do not receive school fees for survival. “The money received from the government is to cover basic needs,” said Thabo Smit, Bophelong school principal. Since Smit took over the school nine years ago, he has make some tremendous changes. The cement will be use to upgrade outside on the floor for Grade R. The school has received

a face-lift and is growing more feasibly. Thanks to Build It and Van’s Building for opening their hearts. Thanks also to the companies for their graciousness towards the schools. “You don't have to be rich to make a difference,” said Ismael Kader, owner of Build It Vanderbijlpark. He said that, because parents purchased most of their building materials at his store, he found it neccesary to plough back by donating to the schools. This was a clear message to challenge and make a call to other companies or individual members of society to come to the party

coach Shakes Mashaba wants. In fact, Safa is right to challenge PSL’s decision to exclude their academies in the league because they are the custodians of football in this country, especially development. Development is the responsibility of Safa whether we like it or not. For example, the very same players that play in the league will be selected to represent our junior national teams. You do need a rocket scientist to see that the problem between Safa and PSL started from the time of elections when Danny Jordaan was elected Safa

President. For a change, can these ‘men in suits’ at the PSL and Safa offices manage their egos for the sake of football development. As things stand now, our junior league struggles due to the lack of sponsorship and financial muscle. For a change, Safa has a point and the Minister of Sports Fikile ‘Mr Razzmatazz’ Mbalula must intervene because he was there during the launch of the League. To make matters worse, he said he gave the League his blessing. This ongoing dispute between Safa and PSL is not good for our football. This country has become the laughing stock of other football nations because it seems we can’t do anything right for the development of football. It is a shame, really a shame!

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Tyrone Koller hails the Vaal River School Soccer League as a success. According to Koller, the man behind this initiative, the league was built up by top high schools around Vanderbijlpark and surrounding areas to generate competition among young footballers. Koller says it has been an exciting season with schools making their presence felt from day one. He says schools like Ca-

rel De Wet whose u/20s went through the season unbeaten, Suiderlig Ladies soccer team who finished top-of-the-group unbeaten, as well as HTS Sasol whose u/15s u/17s & u/19s progressed to the semi-finals, made this league exciting. He says he was overwhelmed by the talent and quality of football on display throughout the season by the schools. The much anticipated finals of this schools league is scheduled to take place at Suiderlig High School on Saturday. “We would like to thank all schools who

took part in the Vaal River League and we now urge schools, parents and the community at large to come in numbers to support the initiative. We will really appreciate their support because it is going to be a fun-filled day come Saturday,” says excited Koller. Koller is one of the few coaches from the community who is passionate about the development of football in this region. He has been involved in a number of football projects in Sedibeng such as the FUTSAL.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - After a gruelling competition 23 finely tuned athletes will be representing Sedibeng Body Building at the SA Championships from September 10 - 13 in Cape Town. SEDIBENG. - The North West University (NWU) Vaal FC and Vereeniging Old Boys FC will be pitted against one another to decide the Boitshepiville winner in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League Stream A. The two sides finished at the top of the log of their respective streams A and B. According to League Chairman Philip Ndolovu, the two teams will play against one another to decide the overall winner for the Boitshepiville event. Further, the winner will compete against the winner of the Sebokeng Stream to produce the team that will represent Emfuleni in the Promotion Play-Offs with three LFAs – Emfuleni, Lesedi and the Midvaal Local Football Association’s battle for a spot in the Safa Sedibeng SAB Regional League. However, Ndlovu says the date and venue will be announced at a later stage when NWU

Vaal FC and Vereeniging Old Boys FC will play. “I wish to congratulate both teams for winning the league in their respective streams. As chairman of the association, I wish both teams luck. It was a stressful season but I’m happy that finally the league came to an end,” says Ndlovu.
