Help us quit: Nyaope kids
Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG.- “Please help us, we want to quit!” These are the words of five heavily drugged ‘nyaope’ users who are pleading for help. The five youngsters use the same needle to inject ‘nyaope’ into their veins. They first draw their blood with a syringe, mix it with the drugs that contain - amongst many components - rat poison. Sedibeng Ster was taken to their hideout a few metres behind the SANCA offices in Zone 12. This is where they relax in filthy blankets amongst old medical waste. The apparatuses that they use include razor blades, matches, shoelaces, water, a cup and the dangerous mixture of ‘nyaope’. Self-confessed addict Thato Mokone (22) could not stop repeating how he wants to quit. The group say that they purchase 0,5 grams of nyaope for R40 from a local dealer. Nyaope is a mixture of heroine, anti-retrovirals (ARV) tablets, and Rattex, they explained. It produces a highly toxic (shocker) and addictive substance. Asked when they are going to quit, they
respond, “We want to quit drugs and deserve a second chance.” But since they have been using it for more than six years, they say it’s hard to quit as they depend on the drug for survival and their bodies do not tolerate a situation where they go without the drug for a couple of hours. The symptoms include cramps, headaches and seizures. The group say that they are driven by pain as they cannot do without drugs adding that once they don’t get the money, their last resort is to steal and rob peopleto get their fix. Thato’s mother, Cecelia Mokone, is desperate for her son to get help. She says that police officers are not doing their work and that they are of no help when the cases are reported to them. Vivienne Nyoka, a professional nurse at Sanca Vaal mobile clinic, says that they have approached police but they seem to have run out of ideas. She says that Zone 12 is a hotspot for drugs and needs urgent intervention.

Counting down to the Metro?
Lerato Serero
VEREENIGING.- By the 25 September the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) administration is certain that the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) will officialy declare the Sedibeng region a metro as it has in principle. This was announced by the SDM executive mayor Simon Mofokeng in Vereeniging on Tuesday afternoon. Mofokeng says that he and his team have worked hard to make sure that the metro exists. A notice has been placed out by the MDB that calls for public participation on the matter and will stand for 30 days. During the announcement Mofokeng says that the incorporation of the four municipalities, Midvaal Local Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality, Lesedi Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality will be beneficial for the area and will help the local communities financially as there will be a single
decision making administration for service delivery. “ There has, for a long time been a need for social integration and linkage in this area, the Vaal region has grown and with the growth comes a need for a metro,” says Mofokeng. Within the 30 day grace period the SDM mayor says that they will submit a document on how they will integrate the area and engage with the different businesses and stakeholders in the region in order to develop a way forward. He says that there are also plans for consolidation and a smooth process of putting together a metro through a project code named ‘Day O’, this is where he says his administration will be counting down the days from when the MDB has declared the area a metro to the last day that the official integration takes place. “We know that the process will not be easy but we are prepared for anything and every-
thing,” he says. Asked whether he is aiming for the position of being the mayor of the proposed metro, Mofokeng says, “ I am not lobbying to be a mayor, If the party which I serve
which is the ANC decides that there is a value that I can add then I am here, I am part of a strong team that is making history and making this dream become a reality.”
RDP houses on sale Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - An Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) employee could be dismissed if the Magistrates Court finds him guilty of fraud. The suspect was arrested by police and charged for allegedly selling RDP houses. The man - who can not be named as he has not pleaded - appeared briefly in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on August 5. ELM spokesperson Klaas Mofomme confirmed that an employee in the Department of Housing had been arrested and charged with fraud. The arrest comes after a tip-off from members of the public about several houses up for
sale by the suspect. A municipal police official gathered information before making the arrest. Mofomme said an internal investigation is being conducted before possible dismissal. “The suspect will be placed on leave while the investigation process is conducted. He has been informed not to approach witnesses. Immediately after the South African Police Services (SAPS) complete the investigation and produce proof, the suspect’s job might be ‘on the line.Emfuleni does not condone corrupt officials and will never compromise when it comes to taking decisive action, said Mofomme.,” he added.

No getting away SEDIBENG.- A 32-year-old man was no match for the Vaal Rand Flying Squad members when he was arrested with dagga worth R1.9 million in his possession recently. Two members from Gauteng Flying Squad- Vaal Rand, stopped a suspicious White Isuzu LDV during routine patrols on the N3 at Heidelberg. The driver pulled off the road and allowed the SAPS members to se-
arch the van. The members found 64 bags filled with dagga in the back of the vehicle. The driver was arrested for possession of dagga and detained at Heidelberg. He was apparently travelling from Ladysmith in Kwazulu-Natal where the dagga is cultivated and was allegedly en route to deliver it in various parts of Gauteng. The street value of the dagga is estimated at R1.9 million.

Lerato Serero News Editor Comments
An open letter to South African Police Service (SAPS) Commissioner Reya Phiyega. Madam, pardon me if you find this letter touching on a few nerves, please note that this is not what is intended. I, like many South Africans, was disturbed by the recent revelations that about a 1 500 of your employees are criminals. We are disturbed Madam with this news as these are the individuals that are supposed to guard us against criminals (pun intended). Madam, I am quite sure that you

realise that South Africa is known to the world as one of the most dangerous countries to visit, worse to live in. Having said that, a few questions suddenly pester my mind, the one of most concern being: how are we supposed to have faith in the people that you have entrusted with our lives and safety when we realise that some of them are criminals? Among the convictions that are mentioned on the recently released report are that, Madam, in your midst ,you have rapists, robbers, thieves and, worst of all, murderers. I am not painting your members with one brush here but please note that these are the people we rely on to stop the very
same crimes that they are accused of, from being committed against the ordinary man on the street. Where do we turn for help now? Another thing that puzzles me is that some of these ladies and gentlemen occupy higher offices, surely there could have been a proper process of screening these people, am I not right? Now that we also hear that the law prevents the South African Police Services (SAPS) from firing those with criminal records until they have had an internal hearing, we wonder how long this will take, and if it will take place at all. Madam, the establishment of a board of fitness evaluators to assess whether each of the-

VEREENIGING. – Lebo Sekgobela’s live DVD recording was a very prolific and entertaining show on Saturday night at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre. Sekgobela unleashed the unexpected during the show. She says that the album will contain 15 tracks featuring artists such as William Sejake, popularly known from Joyous Celebrations and Denzil Erusmus who is with the Sharpeville Methodists. “I wanted to be different, but it comes at a price - hard work and being time consci-
ous. I have been in the studios rehearsing and worshiping God with all my heart and soul. These are the fruits of what God has granted me,” said Sekgobela during the show. Throughout the show, members of the audience could not sit still, as the dynamic worshiper sang at the top of her voice to praise God with her backing vocalist and her band. There were gospel singers amongst the audience the likes of Tshepiso Mpotle, Omega, Thabo Makhopochane and many more attended the event.

se individuals is fit to stay on the job is indeed a step in the right direction and should be highly commended. Honourable Commissioner, this is in no way an attack on your sterling members, many of whom I personally work with and hold in high esteem, but Madam, I think you realise that the process of cleaning your house should start now and continue indefinitely for your, and your employees’ integrity to be redeemed and, with that, I hope you find this letter in order. Thanking you. Lerato...

teraction of both the audience and the contestants. While many came to pitch and polish their business ideas, others attended the event out of sheer curiosity. Facilitator Allen Raiz - CEO from Raizcorp - motivated the audience with his compelling story of his own highs and lows in life, leaving them to evaluate and reflect upon their own entrepreneurial skills. “An entrepreneur needs to continuously manage resources and assess risks. Resilience and honesty are the key attributes each individual must hold, regardless of whether you are a survivalist, lifestylist or growth entrepreneur,” said Raiz. Participants were given the opportunity
to pitch their business ideas for 30 seconds a go. A total of five people competed, but in the end, only three made it to the second round.

League team. Shooting From The Hip will now explain exactly why this will continue to be a problem in this region. Shooting From The Hip finds it very strange that a team that made its debut in the SAB League is the one that wins the league. How is this possible? The same happened with the Real Hearts FC. In their first season in the SAB League, this Heidelberg-based side was crowned the league champion at the end of the season. However, they failed in the play-offs. Shooting From The Hip last week highlighted the serious problem of some Promotion League teams now using SAB League players
just because they want to win at all costs! The truth of the matter is that most of those teams promoted to the SAB League in this region actually did not deserve to win the league but - because of biased officiating - they ended up promoted. Shooting From The Hip is also aware that in Sebokeng the u/13 and u/15 league is playing but how can it be allowed that our junior soccer teams play on hard-surface soccer fields while it is still called the Safa League? To make things worse, there are no referees from a structure but - again - we still call this Safa League! I don’t think these youngsters take this league seriously because it doesn’t challenge them. How do we expect these boys to develop properly while they play in these conditiI and My Family had everything & ons? – on hard surlife was good but due to jealousy my husband’s family hated me. Gusha not gushing about new commitee
Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - In a twist of events, Vaal Milano FC director Junior Gusha says he doesn’t recognise the newly elected Emfuleni Local Football Association’s interim committee under the leadership of Philip Ndlovu. This follows after the teams elected a new committee to replace the current Emfuleni Local Football Association’s executive committee. However, Gusha says the elected committee was not in good standing. He further says the proper channels were not followed as far as the
constitution is concerned, leading to the new committee’s election. “We as Milano FC will not recognise that committee. Some of them are not part of the football structure, like the new secretary. I also understand that some of the teams are still to affiliate - yet they voted. This is not how football is supposed to be run. As much as we are upset, we must follow the constitution. This is wrong, to say the least,” says Gusha. Gusha says that, as far as he knows, constitutionally, Bushy Nale is still the Emfuleni Local Football Associati-
on’s chairman until the next election. However, Gusha also admits that the executive committee made some “blunders” though he believes people must not take advantage of the current situation in local football. Sedibeng Ster Sports has also learned that Safa Sedibeng secretary Star Hlongwane has also rejected the new committee, claiming that it was not a constitutional election. Sedibeng Women in Sports Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - This week Sedibeng Ster Sports focuses on women of the present and past who have made a significant contribution to the growth of sports in Sedibeng region. Part of celebrating Women’s Month recognises their contribution and their individual achievements in local sports. Grace Tshabalala-Radebe is one of the women who was instrumental in the growth of football in this region, especially women’s football. She was the only female in the SAFA Vaal executive committee. Despite being the only female in that committee, she was not intimidated by those so-called ‘powerful men’ at Safa Vaal headquarters. She retired from football after local football was marred by controversy, backstabbing, gossip and character assassination. Rose “Pona” Jijane was another woman who made history as the first female soccer star to play for Banyana Banyana. This former Boipatong Ladies FC player became a household name for Banyana Banyana. Dudu Msane, Gauteng Vaal Netball President, is one of the women in this region who played her part in the development of netball. She relocated from Soweto, Orlando, to start her own netball team in Sharpeville. This was long before she became the Association’s president. Msane was a prolific netball player in the days before she retired and ended her career as netball administrator. Mapule Nteso is another woman who also held her own in women’s soccer. Just like Jijane, Nteso was one of the most gifted women soccer stars to have come out of Sedibeng region. She played for the now-defunct Mighty Stars Ladies FC from Sharpeville. This was before the club combined with the VUT Ladies FC under the leadership of Lebang “Msengu” Tshabalala. Letitia Pheleu is one female athlete who will go down in the history of Sedibeng as one of the women who put this region on the world map. This talented former New Generation Athletics Club runner has represented this country locally and internationally on several occasions.

SAB a STAB in the back! Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Promotion League became more and more exciting when log leaders, Sebokeng Ajax suffered its second defeat of the season at the hands of The Birds FC. However, the game was played under protest with Ajax lodging a protest against The Birds FC for fielding SAB League players registered with the senior team. The Boipatong-based team beat the log leaders 2-1 in a drama-filled match played at the Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday. Despite the defeat Ajax still remains at top the log. There have been complaints that some of the teams in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League use SAB League players. The Association’s interim committee chairman Philip Ndlovu promises to deal with this situation. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports after the game, Ajax coach Master Zondo says it is not good for football if some teams use SAB League players just because they want to win the league at all costs. “Look, we all want to win the league, but cheating is not part of football. As much as we play for promotion, we shouldn’t overlook the most important
part - which is development. We must not destroy football just because someone wants to win the league,” he concludes. In another league game Liverpool FC defeated Vaal Development Academy 2-0 in a derby match played at the Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. While Vaal Stars FC beat Nale Academy 2-0 in another clash played at the bumpy Bophelong Stadium on Saturday. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Sedibeng West District 8 will host the Secondary and Primary School Cross Country Championship scheduled to take place at Carel de Wet School on Saturday. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport
by the D8 publicist – Motlalepule Nku - who believes that this year’s competition will be tough. Nku says all the participating schools are looking forward to this cross country championship. She says preparations are at an advanced stage with organisers working tirelessly to
make the tournament a success. Nku says that the winner on Saturday will represent the Sedibeng region at the Provincial Cross Country Championship scheduled to take place at Roodeport in September. “I have no doubt that this event is going to be successful taking into consideration that the participating schools take it very seriously. The schools are more than prepared and we expect stiff competition this time around.
The event will give these children a platform to showcase their talent and go all the way to represent this region at the provincial level. I’m looking forward to Saturday,” says Nku. Nku is also full of compliments for his organising team for the hard work they put into the event. She says team spirit is unbelievable among the organisers and that this is a clear indication that the event can only be a success.
