SEBOKENG. - Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng on Monday had to address the aggravated residents of Lengweleng informal settlement, ward 36, near Zone 10 Extension 3. Mofokeng stood in the blazing sun, surrounded by unhappy residents and told them he would try to resolve their issues to the best of his ability. The residents have in past week completely shut down the use of a roads near the settlement, demanding proper housing and service delivery. The community stated that they were not fighting anyone but were frustrated by officials who falsely promised to move them into RDP houses, but never carried their promises out. Mofokeng said, “I am going to ask you to please calm down, open the roads you have closed and give us a chance to speak to the MEC for Human Settlements, Jacob Mamabolo.” He urged residents to cease protests, adding that many issues need to be resolved, “but in the meantime our lives must not come to a standstill.” Residents said they would not open the roads until they heard what Mamabolo said

about the situation. “We will wait for you to come back to us with answers. Only then will we open the roads,” the residents said. (The roads were opened on Tuesday morning). On Tuesday Mofokeng together with Assistance Mshudulu SDM MMC for Development Planning and Housing returned to the area to inform the community that they had met MEC Mamabolo and resolved that money from other projects in the region will be shifted to building houses for the community of Lengweleng and that a process of installing infrastracture will begin soon. The process of building the houses is expected to be finished around March next year. However only 90 residents qualify for the houses at the moment and residents that do not appear on the database were encouraged to reapply or contact the office of MMC Mshudulu for assistance. “We are pleased with the outcome and the involvement of Mayor Mofokeng which sped things up,” said a community member. Mofokeng, however, warned community members not to go around ‘inviting’ their relatives from near and far in the hope that they too would be given houses.

oPEN FoR REGISTRATIoN 2015

The project is expected to amount to approximately R30 million with a local contractor being given preference for the job. Meanwhile Sedibeng District Municipality Acting Director of External Communications, Lebo Mofokeng, has labelled as a smear campaing a report about a video that came out in a national newpaper showing the mayor apparently drunk at a bar in Barrage. Mofokeng says, “This smear campaign by faceless and desperate individuals further illustrates that the two previous alleged cases were part of a plot to weaken and undermine the Executive Mayor ahead of the ANC Regional Conference to be held soon. It is against this background that the Sedibeng District Municipality, calls on its residents to see this incident in its proper context.”

Community vent frustration on roads Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Residents of Boiketlong informal settlement went berserk, ran riot and barricaded roads. They bayed against poor

service delivery. Hundreds of residents took to the streets at around 02:30 (am) on October 15. Motorists woke to see tyres burning on roads that were choked with rocks and tree

trunks. This was the whole of Moshoeshoe, Waterdale and the R54 roads. The community said that, by October 14, they had had enough of fruitless meetings with the Gauteng portfolio committee on Housing and with Sedibeng District municipal officials. Four community leaders and four residents including a woman were arrested by police during the protests and charged with public violence. They did not appear before the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. They were questioned and then released from the police station the following day. One Sipho Manganye - who did not participate in the protest - said the community had repeatedly been disappointed by empty promises. A meeting hosted near the local school turned ugly because officials failed to respond to the question of when Boiketlong would have electricity installed and when RDP houses would be built. A report - in the hands of Sedibeng Ster from the Department of Human Settlements

stated that the layout plan is circulating within the municipality and comments are awaited before the report is submitted to the decisionmaking authority of the municipality. Eskom is finishing investigations in respect of electricity supply for phase 1. The report was expected at the end of September 2014. The report further reads that “The construction for installation of services is expected to commence in Extension 30 for phase 1. This will take six months and should commence in October 2015.”

Out with Mphuthi and Malunga! Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. - ANC Sedibeng Regional Offices were chaotically violated on Thursday morning when a cluster of ANC branch members crowded in. They demanded that everyone vacate the building before all hell broke loose. As if that was not enough, the members further went to the Sedibeng District Municipality offices where they invaded the building and demanded that one official - Sibongile Mphuthi - vacate the building. Apparently the official was there despite her connection with a corruption case. The angry mob forced their way into the building and found Mphuthi. She was escorted from the building by Police while the angry mob chanted and screamed, “Out, out, out and ‘phansi ngezikhohlakali phansi!” Mphuthi was due to be suspended in accor-

dance with ANC policy, says the groups standing chairperson Vuyo Mzazi. “We cannot be led by corrupt officials. The ANC’s name has been dented enough,” he said during the press conference held shortly after Mphuthi was escorted out of the offices. Oupa Malunga is another administrator the group did not want to see. Mzazi says Malunga and his entourage are sabotaging ANC Regional Secretary Bob Mthembu and they won’t allow it: “We are soldiers of the struggle. We cannot stand back while the ANC’s image is being smeared,” said Mzazi. Regional deputy chairperson Greta Hlongwane was among the delegates deployed to hear the grievances of the members. She was given a short time to explain herself as nothing seemed to get through to the mob. They told Hlongwane to keep quiet as they

VUT establishes student financial trust fund Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The management, community and stakeholders of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently took a bold step. This was the establishment of an interim committee to bail out cash-strapped students through financial aid. The Student Trust Fund led by Dr Moshebi as chairperson of the Interim Parents Forum was launched on October 17. This was a response to the recent strike in which students went on the rampage due to lack of financial aid from government. The institution suspended classes. The university faces a dilemma: how does one split the cash equally among thousands of students? Trust Funds that include management, stakeholders, parents and students have come up with a remedy to rescue students from their critical shortage of food, study materials and accommodation. The challenges faced by the students are formidable. “Once we join hands, we can only emerge

victorious,” says Dr Moshebi. He appealed to students to present ideas on how to utilise the cash. He said the Trust will be registered as a non-profit organisation with transparent information. There should be a strategic way and direction in the use of the funds. Prof G Zide, acting Vice Chancellor, said

there had been shortcomings to the financial scheme: “Let not our neighbours go hungry while we have ways and means to assist. The students are the beneficiaries of the trust. We are our brothers’ keepers. “We are responsible as members of the community. Irrespective of who you are or where you come from, the cour-

age is in you to take the first step.” Richard Makhalemele of R.M Makhalemele and Associates Inc (attorneys at law), promised together with his associates and other stakeholders from Sasolburg to come up with amicable help to boost the trust. Another R300 000 was also donated by Good Samaritans.

Fire awareness event a success Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - Gauteng Province Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fire and Rescue Services, the Sedibeng District Municipality and the fire department of the Emfuleni Local Municiplity, ELM. These bodies last week held a Provincial Fire Awareness Week themed “working smoke alarm saves lives” at the George Thabe Stadium. The event targeted young school children from various Sharpeville primary schools. Awareness was sown through Public Information and Education Relations, PIER. “The aim of the campaign is to educate the community, especially school kids, on the dangers of fire. Kids should be targeted as they are the most vulnerable when it comes to disasters and also to ensure that information is disseminated to the grown-ups,” said ELM MMC Public Safety Veli Mcera. Mcera adds that in most cases kids are not aware of the dangers that surround them and normally find themselves in compromising situations that may harm them or even cause death. One community member awarded with a certificate in Basic Fire Fighting - Isaac

Moeletse - said, “I appreciate the training we received because I will now be able to help my neighbours in an emergency.” Moeletsi added that it is very important

for the municipality to train community members as this will help lessen the number of fatalities caused by fire. “I believe that every street should have at least four people

who have undergone training in basic emergency services and fire-fighting. This can only help members of the community to save other people’s lives.”

Training Early Childhood Developers

Informal crèche owners from the Sebokeng areas last week garnered certificates in ECD from ASHA’s caretraining funded by the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund.

SEBOKEG. - ASHA Trust recently hosted an enthusiastic group of informal crèche owners at Leema Mokotuli Primary School. The group of 20 women were awarded certificates for successfully completing an ASHA care-training programme in early childhood development (ECD), which they started in March this year. Funded by the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund, the care-training conducted in Sebokeng is one of ASHA Trust’s ECD training and mentoring initiatives. In addition to contact classroom sessions, the training programmes include on-site mentoring and support to participating crèches in order to guide and assess implementation of the practical knowledge and skills gained. Presenting certificates to the recipients, ASHA Trust Chairperson Dr Tshepo Motsepe emphasised the broader impact of ECD skills development to the social and econo-

mic development of areas like Sebokeng. “In supporting government’s prioritisation of ECD as an indicator for future learning success, ASHA has recognised the critical and widespread role of home-based crèches in meeting the ECD needs of many poor communities in South Africa,” says ASHA trainer Fikile Moloto. Moloto appealed to certificate recipients to take their responsibility for the children in their care seriously. “If you do not have a passion for developing our children, if you do not conduct the day-to-day activities in your crèche with joy and purpose, then you should not be working in a preschool. “You should go and do something else,” Moloto concluded. South Africans are a lazy bunch bunch and this is a fact. ‘Msholozi’ is right to make this fact clear that when foreigners come to South Africa, because they are not used to government handing[out] things, they get here, see opportunities and thrive. Over the past month in this region there have been protests over service delivery, houses in particular. One would argue that the protests are justified because of the promises that have been made by government, but would I also not be correct to say that the community is sitting on their behinds to be spoon-fed? The

president is right to ask what is it that causes protests in South Africa when the rest of Africa is not doing it. He is also correct to mention that once these African countries were free, it was each one for themselves. There were no programmes to deal with poor people. The most important fact that Msholozi makes mention of is that our people are waiting for government. Our people are not used to standing up and doing things for themselves. Foreigners are not expecting any government to do anything so they get here, see opportuni-

ties and exploit them hence they have taken over small businesses in this country. They do not expect to be spoon-fed. Due to the extensive roll-out of services after 1994, South Africans have become dependent on the state. In no country in the world have you seen government giving people houses free of charge because they are poor, never. South Africans are indeed lazy. Just my view, I stand to be corrected. Lerato...

Special school project for nurses and teachers

Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Professor Melvyn C Freeman from the office of the minister of Health was deployed to the annual Gauteng Nurses Congress held on Thursday at Stonehaven. The event was organised by the Department of Health and Education. Its primary purpose was to convey understanding of mentally and physically challenged children in connection with education. According to the office of Minister Motswaledi, special education has been used to educate children with disabilities through the Department of Health. Professor Freeman spoke to the house that assembled nurses and educators at Stonehaven about the initiative launched by both departments to find a common way to train teachers through the special schools project. He says children with disabilities need more care and love from their teachers and creating a project for this course can only bring understanding to both nurses and teachers.

“We are going above and beyond to meet our challenges from the Health Department. We are coming with solutions for children with disabilities. This is an initiative by the office of Minister Motsweledi that can only benefit nurses and teachers, who are trained to have an understanding of children with disabilities,” says Freeman. He adds that children with disabilities have different ways of communicating which can be understood by trained nurses, but not teachers. “By so doing we are trJying to give teachers the same training that nurses had undergone in order to find a common ground for teachers to understand disabled children,” says Freeman. Freeman says it was a great honour to have been deployed for such great event and speak to great minds. Sedibeng Health Director Salamina Hlahane says they are thrilled to have contributed to the special schools projects as they are looking forward to implement on their words.

Cosmos register first win in Vaal Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Jomo Cosmos registered their first home win when they beat Cape Town Santos 2 - 0 in the entertaining National First Division League match at the Isak Steyl Stadium on Sunday. This is the second win for Ezenkosi since the season started after playing seven games. The win came at the right time when they needed it most. The win will improve Cosmos’s position in the National First Division log’s standing. However, the score could have doubled if Cosmos strikers took their chan-

ces. Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono says it’s the same story at each and every match. He believes his team created lot of chances but failed to convert them. He was happy with the victory however, saying this was an opportunity for them to close the gap at the top. Cosmos came into this game tenth on the log with seven points but, after the weekend, results will boast their position. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the game, Sono says they will maintain their consistency because this was their biggest challenge for them: “I knew it was just a matter of time before we started collecting maximum

points because we have been playing very well. The boys now realise how important it is to start winning the games and to be in touch with the teams at the top. I have no doubt that come the second round, we will be up there at the top if we continue to play as we played today.” Meanwhile, Cosmos hosted trials for u/15 trials at Isak Steyl Stadium with Nale Academy playing against the Vaal-selected squad. Sono selected eight players on the day. According to Sono, they are preparing for a soccer tournament to take place overseas next year.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Despite some schools withdrawing at the eleventh hour, Vanderbijlpark Build It U/13 School Tournament was a great success. The event took place at Cecil Oldridge Park on Sunday. The tournament saw 16 township and town schools battling for honour in the scorching sun. This annual tournament was attended by the Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Sports and Recreation Shaka Radebe, former soccer great Simon “Bull” Lehoko, Safa Sedibeng President Xolani Mtumtum, former South African U/20 national team coach Macky Chenia, Safa Sedibeng Technical Director Patric Louw, to mention a but few. Radebe was full of compliments for the organisers of the tournament. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Radebe said the tournament is one of the best junior tournaments to organise in this region. “Look, companies such as Build It must be complimented for their commitment in lifting our community through sports. As the municipality we will always support this kind of initiative and give as much support as we can,” said Radebe. Sedibeng Ster has learned that some town schools withdrew from the tournament in the last minutes and forced the organisers to replace them with township schools. This was confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Sedibeng West District education specialist Nkoane Botsane, who promises that, as the district, they will take this matter up with those school principals: “The tournament went as we planned. The only disappointment was those schools that dropped us in the last minutes. It would be very interesting to hear why they withdrew from the tournament,” said Botsane.

If Development coaches realised that youngsters won’t play for them for the rest of their lives then they wouldn’t refuse when a better team wants to collect them. Some coaches even refuse when their players go to trials because they think they own them. This disease is killing the talent in this region, with coaches denying their players opportunities to further their careers in better environments. Jomo Cosmos hosted trials for Sedibeng u/15 players and some coaches refused to bring their players, because they are concerned about what they are going to get out of the deal. REALLY? Last week Shooting From The Hip asked what was EATING development coaches in this region. These boys will retire prematurely because their time was squandered by development coaches. Some coaches were happier going to local tournaments to get free T-shirts than taking their kids to trials. They were happy receiving VIP treatment while forgetting that their youngsters also need exposure. There is something seriously wrong with our coaches, in particular development coaches.

If parents don’t intervene, their children’s talent is selfishly wasted. The coaches were attending a certain tournament on Sunday and decided their players would not attend trials because THEY (coaches) were not going there. They don’t care about these youngsters’ advancement because - if they did – I think they would have brought them for trials. The truth is that lack of EDUCATION in our football is the cause of this – of coaches refusing to allow their players to attend trials. Why should I write about coaches like this every week? Why does it have to be like that – writing every week about the wrongs done by development coaches in this region? To make matters worse, some of these youngsters find it difficult to play at the Isak Steyl Stadium because the conditions are much different from what they are used to. This is a big concern for our football because some good players look ordinary under those conditions, in spite of being really talented. They play three halves but - in the last half – they are just walking in the field, very tired. To coaches it means nothing that these boys grow up playing for their teams and never attend trials, especially if trials are a step ahead of our development teams. For the sake of these youngsters, please just cooperate and put differences and egos aside!

Olympians Boxing Club hosts boxing tournament Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The Olympians Boxing Club will host a boxing tournament at the Olympians Sports Centre in Vandebijlpark opposite Virgin Active on November 1. This mouth-watering news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sport by club manager Marius Lennox, who promises fireworks come November. The tournament will see local boxers ‘trading leathers’ with their Johannesburg counterparts. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Lennox says it will be local lads against the outside boxers on the day. The tournament will be the first of its kind to be staged by the Olympians Boxing Club. “This will be the first-ever boxing tournament staged by the club and all Gauteng teams are invited to come and participate. The preparation of this much anticipated tournament

is in the advanced stages and we can’t wait to host a successful event,” said Lennox. Lennox says all Sedibeng boxing clubs and boxers who are interested in participating in the tournament are welcome to come. He believes that the tournament is part of the ongoing process to bring back the good old days of boxing in the Vaal. This region produced boxing greats in the past who went on to conquer South African boxing as champions. South African boxing won’t be complete without mentioning great boxers such as Carlton ‘Swing Carlie’ Monnakgotla, Shamba Mthimkhulu, ‘Baby Lux’ Khambule, Shole ‘Tiger Floor’ Mokoena and great boxing promoters such as ‘Big Ben’ Khambule, Mike Xaba and Bennet Moeketsi, to mention but few.

Baba Makunyana will be one of the local boxers to trade leathers with his Johannes burg counterparts come the tournament at the Olympi ans Sport Centre on Novem ber 1. Photo: Supplied.
