SEBOKENG. - When two lions fight, it is the grass that suffers. This is what apparently happened between Thabong Shopping Center management and the Department of Labour. The shopping center management was apparently forced to close the doors of the Department of Labour recently. The big padlock left hanging outside the doors speaks for itself as members of the public are left to queue for hours to be assisted at a mobile unit organised since the closure. An official from the Department (who asked not to be named) said they have on several occasions tried in vain to communicate with the head offices to pay the rent. The officer said they were promised that the Department will settle an amount owed to the center and renew a lease agreement that expired last year. “When approached, they keep on promising to settle the matter,” said one of the shopping centre’s staff member. The shopping centres manage-

ment has apparently since decided not to extend the Departments’ lease until they come to the party. “Our doors are open for negotiations,” said the official. Currently the department has apparently managed to pay R20 000 of the outstanding amount of R100 000. When asked why they could not allow the labour offices to operate while engaging on the matter, the officer said, “For the fact that we are running a business, we have to treat all our customers equally.” The provincial chief director for the Labour Department, Kenny Fick, said their hands are tied. “We failed to secure negotiations with the Department of Public Works to pay the lease. We have organised a mobile unit outside the building and some of the clients are being referred to the Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging branches It’s true that the offices were locked by the landlord as we don’t have formal lease agreement,” said Fick.

People wait in line for service at the Department of Labour at the Thabong Shopping Center in Sebokeng.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vanderbijlpark SAPS appeal to all women to be extra alert when shopping or walking in town or through shopping malls. This follows an incident that occurred recently in a well known grocery shop in the commercial centre. SEBOKENG. -Kgomamang Mazibuko of Westside Park was finally convicted on Tuesday in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court after a full year of investigation by Police. The offender (26) was sentenced to 15 years . He was charged with murder and robbery. Mazibuko’s ordeal started just a few minutes after he committed a murder and rape. Rebbecca Mayekane (17) was brutally raped and murdered by Mazibuko who then participated - or pretended to participate - in the search for the missing girl. Then Mayekane’s cell phone was found in Mazibuko’s possession. A case of murder, robbery and rape was investigated by Sebokeng Police Detectives. Earlier this year an angry

Two years and still waiting to be compensated? Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Wilson family has run out of patience. They have apparently been waiting to be compensated by the Emfuleni Local Municipality. This is after their twins, Lebo and Lebohang (8) died tragically when they drowned in a ditch full of rainwater on February 3, 2011. Jan Wilson, father of the deceased, says that he cannot remember the names of the municipal officials who took the blame and offered to bury their children. The municipality had allegedly left the ditch open as they dug holes, using the soil to upgrade roads. Immediately after the funeral, the couple were allegedly promised some kind of compensation. However, the family

could not explain what kind of compensation they were promised and by which official from the municipality. Wilson said after the funeral, they decided to move to Sonderwater. Every time we went to the office of Emfuleni they sent us to the Social Development Services offices in Houtkop. The former Emfuleni MMC, Cllr Dimakatso Madisa, has invited the family to the office of the executive mayor Gretha Hlongwane to discuss the issue. She apologised to the family as they were misled and taken to different offices for information. The municipality conducted the funeral services at its own cost. “The municipality will never ignore the residents when they are in crisis,” said Madisa.

SHARPEVILLE. - Electricity remains a problem in our communities especially in rural areas where poverty seems to be creeping in daily. This comes after residents of Tshepiso South were promised electricity three years ago but are still using Paraffin, gas and candles. On Wednesday evening community members took to the streets demanding that their councillor come forward to explain to them why the process is delayed. According to the residents a transformer was intalled last year. However, nothing has happened. As their pleas had fallen on deaf ears, they continued to march, demanding an answer from their councillor. Matebello Fuka says, “We have been without electricity for a very long time. Our children and even older people are burning paraffin stoves.”

The transformer installed last year has brought nothing but stress to them as they have to take turns watching over it at night to prevent thugs from stealing it. Thugs have apparently tried several times to steal it without any success. Community members claim that their councillor failed to meet their demands as they questioned her about the electricity saga. According to them she referred them to the municipality to enquire and told them not to mention her name when they did. They also claim that she told them to write a memorandum to the municipality. They did as she said but according to them she started playing ‘hide-and-seek’ with them instead of giving straight answers. When Sedibeng Ster contacted Ward 22 Councillor Sibongile Phume, she refused to comment and hung up.

Life is seasoned with different seasons

Comments One of my favourite seasons (and I am sure many others would agree with me) has arrived much to the revulsion of those that hate the cold. I could not have waited much longer for seasons to change as to me it is time for retrospection. While all of us will be unpacking those boxes with coats and jerseys that smell like moth balls, I will be focusing on new plans in life. Planning throws the searchlight on human wisdom, experience, and ingenuity this dispels the darkness of the future. It also bridges from where we are to where we want to go, making it possible for things to occur which would otherwise not have happened. It is a dynamic process as the future is basi-

cally uncertain and things change with the passing of time. All of us know that everything has a natural cycle. The tides go in and back out, night follows day, and life refurbishes itself. We all have good times and bad times, but nothing stays the same. Change is constant. Planning helps develop objectives. The first step in planning is to fix objectives which will give direction to the actions to be taken. This step focuses attention on the results desired, I surely am welcoming this season believing that with it comes change as one should not linger at one point, but revolve. VUT News CELEBRATING ACADEMIC SUCCESS AT GRADUATIONS 2013 V

aal University of Technology’s Graduation 2013 programme of celebration began at the Main Campus in Vanderbijlpark on Monday, 15 April and ended on Friday, 19 April 2013. Graduation ceremonies take place at the Sites of Delivery from Tuesday, 23 April at the Ekurhuleni campus, on Wednesday, 24 April at the Secunda campus, and on Thursday, 25 April 2013 in Upington. VUT is proud to announce that it has produced a record 3900 graduates this year. The Vanderbijlpark campus alone will have produced 2600 graduates in 2013, including the September graduations. For the first time at VUT, the Faculty of Human Sciences conferred a Doctor Technologiae: Fine Art, to Kayamba Karitit William. Wednesday, 17 April 2013 marked a significant award of the Doctoris Technologiae (Honoris causa) from the Faculty of Human Sciences, to Justice Majake Meshak Mabasele, a judge of the North and South Gauteng High Court. He has made significant strides, as a friend of VUT, to make a substantial donation of law books to VUT’s new Department of Law. Many SRC leaders graduated this year, setting an example of exemplary leadership. The Council, management and staff of VUT congratulate all graduates on this important milestone and wish them every success for the future.

EVATON. - Unleash Your Potential (UYP) organisation in partnership with The Department of Sports and Recreation successfully hosted their first annual two-day ‘VukaMtomusha’ Dance festival at the Evaton Multipurpose Centre on Saturday. UYP chairman Sonnyboy Monnakgotla said the aim of the event was to encourage the youth to be aware of their potential. The festival featured dancers from different parts of the Vaal, Eastrand and Soweto who participated in the traditional and modern dance category. Participants were excited as they stood to win trophies and cash. Dancers presented their first dance piece on Saturday and performed again on Sunday where the winners were announced. Guests were from Gomec, the Department of Community and Safety, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and sponsors were the Department of Sports and Recreation. MC Thembi of UYP entertained the crowd as well as Vaal Important Pantsulas (VIPs) and UYP dancers. Thetha FM’s Kay D showed the crowd that she can also dance. The competition was tough but judges finally announced the winners. 1st place in the Traditional Dance category went to Classic Youth Club dancers and City Boys Pantsulas in the modern dance category, with each taking home a trophy and R2000 in cash. Other winners were Fantastic Movers and Thembalethu, who took 2nd prize and R1000 in cash. UYP’s chairman was happy with how successful their first dance festival turned out. “I thank our sponsors, UYP team and all those who made this event possible,” he says. He adds that everything went according to plan, he said.

Soccer is like their girlfriends and wives With Zacharia Nale This week I was busting my head against the wall because I had run out of ideas as to what to write about. I thought it was because it was Monday. That day Shooting From The Hip suffered from a hangover. No man, not a drinking hangover, a soccer hangover! You know, it doesn’t matter how long one has been in the field of journalism - sometimes you still struggle to put the pieces together for something to make sense. Yes, sense! Talking about sense, something interesting comes to mind. Every time I visit the Boipatong Stadium, I ask myself why those soccer fans always come in numbers when the home teams play their league games, especially the Birds FC. Does this have something to do with loyalty, or with the kind of football their favourite teams play? Rain or cold, they are always there cheering for their teams when they play. I don’t know whether to call this passion for or loyalty to this beautiful game. It doesn’t matter. At least these youngsters don’t play in front of empty seats as is the case with some of the PSL clubs, who barely attract a crowd of

Police officer rolls up his sleeves for the needy

We as the media don’t give credit where it is due. The only time we write about spectators is when they throw missiles or should I say ‘vuvuzelas’ to protest referee decisions. But the fact of the matter is that these are the people who make our football exciting on the stands. They don’t run away even if it is ‘raining cats and dogs’. They stand there and sing non-stop. These are the soccer fans who are always at the Boipatong Stadium. There is the funny character who always sings and teases people around the stadium, including the coaches and especially opposition coaches on the bench. Forget about their boozing habits, they bring the best out of everyone at the stadium. These are the people we will remember,

saying: “If ‘Moketekete’ was here we could have fun or laugh.” We must learn to honour people while they are still alive. We must not wait until they die and make long speeches at their funeral whilst we failed to honour them in life. Of course, some of them come to the stadium drunk but their presence means a lot to the players. They could go to the shebeens or taverns but they choose to come to the stadium to support the development of football. These are the people who are in love with this No 1 sport. To them soccer is like their second home or should I say, their girlfriends and wives! Finally I found sense!

2000. It is always encouraging for these youngsters to play in front of a fair crowd at this young age, to prepare them for the future. My exact point is that no-one will leave his or her house to come and watch soccer at the stadium, especially in this kind of weather. It must be a good reason to say the least! I try to make sense of why they are always at this bumpy Boipatong Soccer Stadium supporting their favourite clubs in action. They are there on Saturdays and Sundays from morning to the last game of the day. Noone forces them from the comfort of their houses to come and watch soccer. Soccer is their lives. This is one aspect of the game we normally neglect.

Yes we do! Pikitup and the City of Joburg are proud to announce the roll-out of our waste recycling programme TRASH TO TREASURE, in the ORANGE FARM area! TRASH TO TREASURE turns your household waste into something of worth. And all we need you to do is separate out the recyclables from your normal refuse. Our Treasure Team will drop in for a quick visit at your home to let you know how you can get involved and help us build a world class African city!

SEBOKENG. - As part of social responsibility, Aubrey Moopeloa rolls up his sleeves for the needy. He did this, when he recently bought a set of soccer kits for the struggling soccer team in Lakeside. Moopeloa, who is related to former Orlando Pirates’ dreadlocked midfield Motlatsi Moopeloa, says, “The donation is part of his social responsibility to his community. According to Moopeloa he volunteered to buy them soccer kits because the team was in desperate need of the proper uniform. “I expect nothing in return because this is part of my contribution - it is good to see young people playing sport. I hope these soccer kits will motivate them and maybe I will see some of them playing PSL teams in future. The donation is not just a publicity stunt but makes a difference to the lives of these kids,” says Moopeloa, who is a policeman by profession.

Exciting final on the cards Zacharia Nale

BOIPATONG. - The stage is set for a ‘humdinger’ when local soccer teams battle it out in the mouth-watering Aaron Mokoena Mbazo Lounge Soccer Tournament final scheduled to take place at the Boipatong Stadium on Saturday. The teams that booked their place in the final are The Birds FC, Vaal Stars, Mighty Stars and The Birds Development FC. The Birds will clash with Mighty Stars in the senior category, while Vaal Stars FC will be pitted against The Birds Development in what promises to be a ‘dog-eat-dog’ encounter. Vaal Stars qualified for the final after beating Nale Academy 1-0 in an entertaining semifinal match, while The Birds Development defeated Young Stars FC in another minutesthriller semifinal. The game was decided on

penalty after these sides 1-1 draw in full time. Mighty Stars booked their place in the final in the senior category after they beat Marambaramba FC 7-6 on ‘sudden death’, while The Birds had to sweat hard before beating the stubborn Vaal Milano in another exciting encounter. The former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron “Mbazo” “Mokoena” enjoyed each and every moment of action. He was accompanied by Orlando Pirates administrator – Zenzo Mazingiza. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mokoena says the tournament is his way to plough back into the Boipatong community for the part they played in his football career. Mokoena says he is passionate about the development of football because he was also a youngster playing in the dusty streets of Boipatong before he joined Jomo Cosmos, the team that shaped his football career. “I’m

grateful to the Boipatong community because I’m one of them. They played an important part in my football career and I will never forget this. I feel humbled to be appreciated by my community and I will always support the

SEDIBENG. - VUT FC, otherwise known as “The Students” is the only team still undefeated in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League. The latter is sitting at the summit of the log with 15 points after five outings. VUT FC is the most experienced campaigner in this league together with Sebokeng Ajax FC. Sebokeng Ajax are second on the log with 13 points from six games, while Nale Academy is third on the log with the same number of points – 13, only goal difference separates the two. Although it is too early The Students seem to be on the way to running away with the league title. However, they won’t participate in the promotion play-offs if they are crowned champions at the end of the season, seeing that they had another team that campaigned in the Safa Sedibeng Castle Regional League. The Birds Babies are fourth on the log after suffering a shock defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals – Vaal Development Academy. This encounter took place at the Boipatong Stadium on Saturday. Despite it ‘raining cats and dogs’ the game lived up to expectations, but off-field drama nearly spoiled this minute-thriller encounter. Both sides’ coaches nearly exchanged punches and some officials had to intervene. When Sedibeng Ster Sport asked about the incident. The Vaal Development coach Ntando “Mboma” Zwane was very diplomatic, saying nothing serious had happened. “These kinds of thing are bound to happen, especially in derbies but I am happy the game continued. What is important

is that the game played to the end and local soccer fans really enjoyed good football. There was nothing personal but emotions were high because no-one wanted to lose this game. I’m proud of how we play despite all these difficult circumstances,” says the softspoken Zwane.
