Old Age Home turns into ‘hell’ Mduduzi Mathebula
SHARPEVILLE. - The elderely are supposed to be taken care of but an old-age-home in Sharpeville seems to be doing the opposite. Pensioner Teresia Matli (88) last week disclosed her suffering at the hands of the NrateNtlhokomele Old Age Home and issued a stern warning to families that would like to take their loved ones there. Matli cried her heart out when Sedibeng Ster visited her in Tshepiso, Diventcheng. She said that she had lived at the home for about two years and in those years it was hell on earth as old people were beaten up and given spoilt food, amongst other things. Matli was sent to the home by concerned residents and neighbours who had thought that she would be well taken care ofwhen she moved away from her 36-year-old daughter, Sheila Raphalo. Matli had to return home after a nurse from the home anonymously called Raphalo and told her of her mother’s unsatisfactory condition at the home. “My mother is not a crybaby so, when she does complain, it surely means that something is wrong. She told me all these things every time I visited her. I thought she was sulking. However, I changed my mind when I got a call from a staff nurse who wanted to be unknown. She specifically asked me to take my mother out of the home. I knew by then she was not happy at the home and that something
was terribly wrong,” explains Raphalo. Sedibeng Ster tried to speak to Nrate-Ntlhokomele Old Age Home manager Nthabiseng Ntamane, who was very rude and seemed uncertain when questions were asked regarding the home and how she manages her clients. She retorted that outsiders should not be bothered about how she runs the home. Apparently, a number of families are unhappy about Ntamane, whom they claim runs the home like a ‘tuck-shop’. Matli says Ntamane bulldozes everyone that comes her way and treats them like animals:“I just want to live my last days with my children and grandchildren and not be treated like an animal there. Also, I want to raise awareness about that place and let the people know what they will be in for if they take their loved ones there. That place is hell on earth,” concludes the emotional pensioner.

Some blue lights mean danger, not Police Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING. - Police are investigating a case of house robbery after a group of men forced their way into a Duncanville home. The robbers pretended to be Police. Victims noticed that the suspects were driving a vehicle that had blue lights. That convinced the victims that the group were Police.
that R6000 went missing. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirms that a case of house robbery is being investigated by Police. Funda sternly warns the public never to allow anyone into their house just because they are driving a vehicle that sports ‘blue lights’: “It is in the public interest to protect oneself by asking questions. We urge the community to use the sector numbers that reflect on Police vehicles, or to call 10111.” He adds that, within the Vereeniging area, they are investigating a number of similar cases in which people are robbed in the name of the Police warn the public against the ‘blue light’ scam Force. that has invaded the Vaal of late.
According to a complainant’s statement, the suspects stopped at their house and claimed to have a search warrant to search the house for drugs. Due to the blue lights and fake warrant, complainants allowed the `police’ into the house whereon it was turned upside-down. After the search the complainant realised that a sum of money had disappeared along with the fake Police. The complainant claims
Murderers get life Lazarus Dithagiso

The victim pleaded with them that she did not have money. The heartless thugs ignored her pleas. The court heard that they assaulted her and then shot her in the leg. She bled profoundly, which caused her death. The accused were both charged with murder after they denied responsibility for being the one’s who fired the shot. “You have to be removed from the society as you clearly pose a danger,” said the Magistrate. During the ordeal, a grandson of Gogo was sleeping in another room. He was also assaulted severely before they tied his hands behind him. They fled with a camera. two cell phones, three pairs of shoes including a Puma ‘tekkie’. The accused were represented by Seforo Mosese. Mosese told the court that he would apply for an appeal ahead of September 29. A first-born son of the deceased, Richard Sedinyana, said he is pleased with the sentence. “Although we will never see our mother, at least justice has prevailed,” he said.

Prominent undertakers investigated for fraud Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - As the bereaved mourned their loved ones and tried to come to terms with their loss undertakers were at loggerheads with the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s investigation team over alleged fraudulent burials. Police have opened a case of fraud against the undertaker as he failed to produce necessary documents for burial on the day. Gunshots were heard, forcing people to run for shelter. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn confims that a case was opened against a well known undertaker. Police officer at the cemetery say that the undertaker should have buried the deceased during the week as per agreement with the municipality but he decided to do so over
the weekend. Prices are not the same for weekday and weekend burials. He is alleged to be bribing caretakers at the cemetery with cash. In another fraud case an undertaker paid for a normal size grave but approached a caretaker to bury in a casket-size grave, the sizes vary. Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni head of communication, said there are over 30 syndicates of undertakers operating the same way. After the investigation some came forward to apologise, willing to work properly. There are more than 200 graves that are not in the system. “Very soon we will be running out of space because of the illegal graves,” said Gaba. Gaba appealed to the bereaved families to make sure that they registered their graves.

Community forces mayor to leave meeting abruptly Lerato Serero
SEBOKENG.- No sooner had Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) mayor Gretha Hlongwane arrived at a community meeting (Ward 36) at the Mohaladitoe Secondary School in Zone 10, Sebokeng on Sunday she, together with her entourage, had to be escorted from the premises as community members showed their dissatisfaction following a short address. The address did not even last ten minutes. The mayor had called the meeting late on Saturday, apparently to discuss the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Community members said they would not listen to Hlongwane as she had not been available when they needed her to address their problems. Amongst the problems they cited was their demand for a flat rate payment on the rate and taxes, a correct billing system and a stop to water leakages that lead to the huge accumulation of rates and taxes. The community has appointed a committee to deal with the problems as they say Ward 36 councillor Maselloane Nthebe does not have their interests at heart. The committee has
since engaged the Public Protector on the saga. “ The mayor takes us for fools. When we call her to attend our meetings she does not, yet when she needs our participation on IDP matters she knows to come running here. Let her go. We are not children and we will deal with the matter as best as we can,” said community members. While leaving the meeting the mayor could be heard saying, “Mina angi shongo njalo” (I did not say that), perhaps with reference to the rates and taxes issue. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Nthebe says that she has done all possible to resolve the communitiy’s issues but every time she has tried to do, that they seem to hit a stumbling block with the community, this when she dearly wants to work with the community. “I want to work with the community; I have done all that is possible to engage them but it seems that they do not understand my work. I have included even the mayor here to show that I am giving this matter attention but the community seem not to understand,” says Nthebe adding that they are now awaiting the Public Protector’s directive on the saga.

Metro still coming - Thupana Moleboheng Chaha
VEREENIGING. - The mission of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) to turn Sedibeng into a Category A metropolitan municipality goes on. This mission saw the ward delimitation process carried out by new MDB chairperson Jane Thupana. The event was held at the Vereeniging Banquet hall and took place less than a week following the publication of the Government Gazette. The event was an information-sharing process on how new wards under a metro would be formed. It dealt also with how the number of new wards and new councillors would be determined. From left are the Executive Lesedi Local Municipality Mayor, Lerato Maloka,Munici pal Demarcation Board (MDB) chaiperson Jane Thupana and Sedibeng District Muni cipality Executive Mayor Simon Mahole at the Vereeniging Banquet hall Mofokeng. Panic causes teachers to resign
Moleboheng Chaha
SEDIBENG. - The overwhelming number of resignations the Department of Basic Education has had to deal with recently is alarming. Sedibeng West District 8 alone is said to be sitting with more than 200 resignations from teachers. Some hope to cash in before the pension fund changes become effective. Parents are at this stage worried about how this is going to affect their children’s upcoming exams. A Sebokeng parent says, “We are afraid resigning teachers will no longer put in the effort they did before in teaching our children.” The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has appealed to teachers to refrain from resigning to access their pension funds: “We have noted with concern reports that there is an increase in resignations fu-
elled by rumours that Government will take away people’s hard-earned pensions and prevent them from accessing their funds. “I want to assure teachers that this is not the case. These rumours are based on a misunderstanding of Government’s proposals. We would like to re-emphasise that Government has no intention to nationalise teacher’s pension/provident funds or prevent them from accessing their money. I would urge those wanting to take this drastic step to carefully re-consider.” Motshega adds that their money is safe and there is no need for them to panic: “It must be emphasised that the proposed pension fund reforms are just that, proposals, and that the National Treasury will embark on a consultation process with all stakeholders in a bid to find the best way forward.”
The process forms part of the Gauteng Outer Boundary Re-determinations finalised in October 2013. These included the amalgamation of the Emfuleni Local Municipality and Midvaal Local Municipality into one metro and the inclusion of Lesedi Local Municipality into Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality. This is all in the midst of Midvaal Local Municipality’s objection against being part of the Vaal River City that is in the pipeline. Asked by a few ward councillors to divulge the grounds on which Midvaal was taking the matter to court, Thupana remained vague: “We will continue with the process as decided in 2013 until such time as the court gives us a verdict. As law-abiding citizens, we will have no choice but to accept any outcome. The merits will be determined in court,” she says. Thupana stated that the challenge by Midvaal questioned the process which had been followed, but she maintained that a metro would only serve the people better.
Electricity cuts at local clinic Lazarus Dithagiso
ZAMDELA. - No electricity, no medication for outpatients at this clinic. Outpatients at the Harry Gwala Clinic in are left stranded every time the electricity goes off. Patients said they had to wait for hours before they received treatment. Lucky were those who come to collect tablets for high blood pressure and/or sugar diabetes. No one, including the nurses, know what happened, reported Dorah Mofokeng: “I came here early in the morning. Suddenly everything went dark,’ she said. When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the clinic, the patients were barking at the sun, waiting. They said they waited to be called once the electricity was back. Electricity cuts happen almost every day, patients say. “The fault is not with the nurses but with the clinic itself,” said Mofokeng. Her sentiment was echoed by a man who referred to himself only as Ben who says,
“We are tired of waiting here. The only queue that went fast without any hiccups is at the clinic in town. Service is fast in Sasolburg, but not here.“A manager at the clinic, Mamokete Matjila, who is also a professional nurse, said electricity cuts started six years ago: “We reported the matter to the regional Department of Health. I am sure that even the Free State MEC for Health should be aware of the problem. The department has promised to deliver a generator. The only things that are supposed to be kept in a fridge are medicines. We explained our problems to patients. There’s nothing we can do to solve the problems,” says Matjila. She said another reason for electricity cuts is that the number of residents in Harry Gwala has increased drastically. “In the past we never experienced such a high volume of patients,” she explained.

9R_Na\ @R_R_\ I have never been one to question someone’s faith but the tragedy that occurred in Nigeria recently makes one to stop and think, particularly considering that many of our people lost their lives and some were left orphaned by this tragedy. South Africans are rightfully angry at what we see as the Nigerian government dragging its feet on launching an investigation into the collapse, which occurred when

We need closure three storeys were being added to the two-storey building, and for not reacting more quickly to help those trapped under the rubble. It’s painful to read reports that many lives could have been saved had the pastor and his people allowed rescue workers to enter the premises in time. Perhaps one would ask: why did the South Africans have to go and worship so far away anyway? I am not one to judge but the things that are said to be happening at this church are dubious, to say the least. Analysts say Nigeria’s mega-church leaders are so influential that few politicians dare upset them, especially just before a national
election, which Nigeria is due to hold in five months. But something needs to be done for the families to find closure on this matter. We, the ordinary community, need to know what happened. Is this another mystery like that of the disappearing airliner? The church draws thousands of followers from all over Africa and other parts of the world, attracted by assertions that its leader and his “wise men” can cure almost any affliction - “casting out demons” they say are responsible for everything from madness and HIV/AIDS to normally irreparable spine damage. I am not one to judge. Both the South African and Nigerian go-
vernments need to get to the bottom of this and make sure that this never happens again. What I very much hope for is that the South African government keeps up the pressure on the Nigerian authorities to make thorough investigations. Although I have said that I am never one to judge other people’s beliefs I think that our home-based churches, the Roman Catholic Church, NG and the others, still do a wonderful job when one needs some sort of spiritual fulfillment. VEREENIGING. - The Sedibeng Regional Economic Summit at the civic theatre led by Emfuleni LOcal Municipality MMC Local Economic Development Khulu Malindi once again proved that large numbers of entrepreneurs exist in this region. More so, it aired the frustration that entrepreneurs have with issues like funding, bylaws and government officilas who refuse to help them when they visit municipal offices. Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for Strategic Planning and Economic Development Maipato Tsokolibane, addressing the issue of officials who are allegedly not doing their jobs as servants of the public, says, “We are not going to tolerate this, We need to expose people who don’t know what they are doing. They should be dealt with decicively.” Tsokolibane further stated that the people of Sedibeng had played a major role in the
liberation of South Africa. “The older people fought for a better South Africa, The current generation must now liberate this country economically. Radical economic transformation and education go hand in hand.” Local entrepreneur Mosele Ramapai says, “Events such as this help us a lot. The success of our businesses can only be enhanced by the sharing of information. This is the reason this platform was created.” Rampai adds that she was not aware of the things she was doing wrong in her business before she came to the summit. Yzman Makhajane from the National Empowerment Fund says that entrepreneurs must learn to act on the information they receive: “I really hope to get applications from you guys. Last time we were here we never got any applications coming from the people of the Vaal. I hope you will go back and use all the advice we have given here today.”

A cleaner and greener Bophelong Lazarus Dithagiso
BOPHELONG. - ABI and Stonehaven on Vaal were thanked for supporting the environmental awareness campaign, Bophelong Clean Up and Greening, which recently ended with a tree planting ceremony. The occasion was hosted at Tsolo Secondary School on September 15. The event aims to acknowledge and honour the collaborative initiative by schools, communities and the municipality as a sign of selfless contribution to protect the environment. ABI, Coca Cola Company and Stonehaven on Vaal were thanked for their contribution. “As a caring community we need to take pride in environmental protection through the starting of sustainable environmental projects. “We must find ways of making a cleaner, greener environment,” said Eric Mutrie, district manager Vaal Maluti-ABI. “We have nine years of air space left in landfills and municipalities are under pressure to divert at least 20% of waste from landfills by 2016. We are committed to reducing the impact on the environment through packaging reduction projects,” he said. Speaking about the primary school recycling programme, Mutrie said educating the community and encouraging waste separation from sources, is a big component of the community programme. The event was concluded with the planting of peach trees at the entrance of Tsolo Secondary School and around Bophelong with learners from various schools helping to to clean the area.

Chef contest puts VUT and Vaal on map Moleboheng Chaha
VANDERBIJLPARK. - The ‘oven’ gloves came off as students got into the kitchen to cook the best three-course meal anyone had ever tasted. This was, of course, to impress the judges of the Top Chef Competition. The Department of Hospitality, Vaal University of Technology (VUT), recently hosted the Top Chef Culinary Competition at Sedibeng’s FET College premises. The competition was entered by various universities of Technology and Further Education and Training colleges in South Africa that have hospitality as part of their curriculums. The event was sponsored by companies such as the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Maccauvlei on Vaal, Fruit & Veg City (Vanderbijlpark), Riverside Sun Resort, Zwamdu Traiding Enterprise, Sedibeng District Municipality, Park Travel Centre and Media Unlimited. Tshidi Zwane, Top Chef Event Organiser, says, “This compettion is hosted to provide professional development for students in the field of hospitality, to prepare for careers in the field and to build a lasting relationship between universities of Technology and FET colleges.” Zwane states that the competition was lauched as an annual event in 2011 and is meant to put VUT together with the Vaal hospitality industry on the map and on the market. Students who competed won prizes such as laptops, food processors, blenders, recipe books and sandwich makers. “The Top Chef Competition will culminate tonight in a splendid gala award event where winners will be awarded. The event will be held at Maccauvlei on Vaal in Vereeniging.” Zwane concluded.
The organising team took the time to pose for a photo while the students competed in a cookoff to finish their meals on time.

Gauteng Academy Models SA eye for talents Mduduzi Mathebula

BOIPATONG. - Gauteng Academy Models SA (GAMSA) hosted auditions on Saturday at Mahareng Secondary School. Gathered here were young girls and boys aged 3 - 10, 11 - 15, 16 Plus, and Girls aged: 3 -5, 6 - 8, 9 - 11, 12 - 14, 15 - 17, 18 - 24. They all lined up among fellow competitors of the Mr and Miss Jacaranda City. GAMSA facilitator Fishy Martins said GAMSA had produced many young talents from grassroots. He said he was sure the pageant competition was a firm stepping stone. Parents formed the audience that attended the auditions. Martin said they were looking for models that can represent the Vaal in provincial and national beauty pageants:
“The person needs to have brains and beauty. These are a given requirement as always.” All the selected boys and girls will head to Pretoria for further auditions towards the provincial level of the ‘race’. “The Vaal has talent, make no mistake. Many young boys and girls have what it takes to compete in the highest competitions. The only thing they need is professional training and guidance. “The aim is to groom young models to be able to perform their best on stage. We plan to find the best models in Vaal, and we compete with international models in order to make it into the modelling industry. It will be a good challenge for local models as they will get experience and be able to travel a lot, as we always do,” said Martins.

Mkhulu Pule Pule clinches a century
Palesa Ubombo and Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. - Ezekiel Pule Pule celebrated his centennial birthday party with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and church members on Saturday. Pule was born in Heilbron in September 1914, a second child to parents who are both deceased. According to the family, his parents moved from Heilbron to Top Location (now Sharpeville) before moving to Evaton in 1961. He was blessed with three boys and two girls who are all graduates. Pule has seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He became a Reverend in St Peters Methodist Church. He was an inspirng motivator for over 43 years with the church. “I wish God could lead us to the right path and protect us until we reach our grandpa’s age,” said his oldest grandchild with tears in his eyes. Daniel Pule, a 73 year-old, and granddad Pule’s other
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, had thrown a surprise birthday party for him. This was with members of the St Peters Church who celebrated a man who clearly knew how to lead and conduct his life through God’s grace. “We are so proud and wish him many more years to come. May the Lord bless him and protect his children,” said one of the elders of the church who was part of the organising committee. After long speeches and words of encouragement, food and drink were served to those who attended the event to celebrate the old man. His grandchildren take good care of him in Evaton. The man himself took a moment to utter words of wisdom to his family: “Only God can protect you, only God can lead you through those dark days, only Him alone can love and cherish you. However, seek first the Kingdom of God and all things shall be added unto you,” said the ‘birthday boy’ in fluent English.
Mkhulu Pule was excited as he clinched a century of life he says that only God can protect us.

Star white baby shower Star white baby shower for a friend at Three Rivers Lodge, the celebration by friends took place on Saturday afternoon. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula. Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENGING. - A very pregnant woman was surprised by her family and friends on Saturday when they invited her to lunch at Three Rivers Lodge. To her surprise it was a baby shower. Tiisetso “Mrs” Sehloho says she did not
notice any sign that a party was on the cards. Even people who were behind the plan, some of them quite close to her, gave nothing away. “This is one moment I will never forget in my life,” says Sehloho, who was fooled by her older sister Thenjiwe Mancwe and the entire family. Mancwe says she and the family wanted
her sister’s first to be the best: “It all started at the Salon when friends commenced to exchange numbers and got more friends to partake in the baby shower.” During the party, gifts were exchanged and Sehloho was overwhelmed by her surprise party:
“I’m very happy because it shows that those who contributed value me and my unborn child. May God bless and reward all those who took part,” says Mncwane adding that children are God’s gifts and need to be cherished. Everyone dressed up for the occasion.
Leah, despised wife of Jacob who gave birth to Judah Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Showered with the Word and baptised by the wisdom of God from the Change Bible Church Vaal. The church is led by Pastor Mandla Mthethwa, who conducted a powerful `back to church’ campaign on Sunday. This was sermoned by guest Evangelist Moratehe Sekete in Zone 10. Themed ‘back to church’ Sekete, who is also known as “Mathousend”, brought revival to the masses that attended the event. He told the congregation that the world has turned against the will and the word of God: “It’s about time true Christians who know why Christ had to die for them, those who know secrets of the crucifixion, come forward to be counted,” said Sekete. He quoted Genesis 29: 31- 35 as an example of how the Lord would use those who are underestimated and cited Leah, the despised wife of Jacob who gave birth to Judah.
God will use those who are underestimated, he stressed. He elaborated on why life was so difficult for many because they use what God has given them to glorify Him for their own pride: “Pride comes before a fall. Money hides the real you but poverty uncovers things we don’t want to see and know about a person,” said Sekete, who said further that with Jesus you can stand against all odds. Temptation will never shake you and back-biters will open doors for you. He illustrated the story of Moses to a congregation that was filled with the Holy Spirit and understanding: “Moses was given a rod to use for the good of salvation. God will use anything and anyone, even somebody who is a nonentity to many,” said Mathousend before he handed the microphone to Pastor Mthethwa. He said the campaign was adopted by the church and, ever since, it has been conducted as an annual event

Celebrating 10 years of University of Technology status
GRADUATION CEREMONIES SEND STUDENTS ON THEIR WAY TO BRIGHT FUTURES
AVERTING RACIAL HIERARCHIES THROUGH POSITIVE CHANGE
Diplomat’s and graduandi’s in cerebration during their graduation ceremony
Anne Naidu
The Vaal University of Technology went full steam ahead with the Spring Graduation ceremonies from 8 to 11 September 2014, despite the disruptions experienced on campus. VUT management was determined to preserve the sanctity of this auspicious event and was committed to ensuring that students graduate with the pride and decorum they deserve. It was felt that students have worked tirelessly to reach this stage in their lives and prolonging their success would have been detrimental to their futures. Originally scheduled to be hosted at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall at the Vanderbijlpark campus, the event was moved to the Quest Conference Estate where, over four days, eight graduation sessions were
held with 1392 students receiving degrees and diplomas and 11 Masters from the various faculties. Guest speakers, including VIPs and council members, were invited to some of the sessions. For many of our alumni, resilience and fortitude have paved their way to success in securing top positions in the workplace. It was David McCullough Jr who said: “The great and curious truth of the human experience is that selflessness is the best thing you can do for yourself.” Parents, who have given up a lot to give their children an education should be praised for their sacrifices and commitment. The VUT wishes to congratulate all our graduates and wish them the very best for the future.
VUT HOSTS SANDF CAREER DAY AND EXHIBITION
VUT and ARNHE delegates at the Anti-Racism Colloquium
Anne Naidu
“Let us become the agents of change!” We hear this so often, but are we willing and able to take the path that leads to change from within oneself? This is fast becoming a common question in society. Against this backdrop, The Anti-Racism Network in Higher Education (ARNHE), under the auspices of the Vaal University’s Social Justice and Transformation Unit, cohosted a colloquia at VUT on 29 August 2014 at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall. The event, which was presided over by the programme directors Mr Mpho Diago and Dr Bernadette Johnson, provided an opportunity for sustained critical dialogue amongst academics, students and staff and offered a unique platform for people to interact on the often lesser-discussed subject of racism. People spoke openly about social asymmetries in topics such as xenophobia, gender, race and class so often associated with racism within the higher education sector in South Africa. This event forced us to look back to where we were and what strides we have made to come this far. ARNHE, through their activities, the network wishes to research racism in our institutions and find ways to counter it and build appropriate measures for building anti-racism practices.
SANDF officials and learners from the Vaal region
Professor Irene Moutlana; our Vice-Chancellor and Principal, entitled her presentation “Hopes are the same, but life experiences divide the races”. She explored issues of how race and ethnicity have become an indelible mind-set, positioned within our education system and all its reform efforts that have shaped our schooling system. Professor Gordon Zide; our Deputy ViceChancellor Operations and Resources, spoke passionately about his own life experiences as a child and the wonderful recollection of family values as compared to the present day and how life has changed for us all. Other speakers included the co-chair of ARNHE Ms Melissa Steyn (Wits), Professor Beverley Thaver (UWC), Professor Andre Keet (UFS) and Professor Connie Moloi (VUT). It was concluded that the modern-day generation perceive racism as social prejudice and feel that all forms of unfair discrimination should be once and for all eliminated and discarded in any form or structure. These and other sentiments such as racial stratifications, ethnicity, discrimination, authoritarian personalities, displaced aggression and segregation were echoed.

Vaal University of Technology Cooperative Department is on leaps and boundaries to ensure students get as much exposure to career choices as possible. The department hosted South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Career Day and Exhibition at Student Parking on 27 August 2014. The event was in celebration of women’s month and brought one of the areas such as ‘national defence’ that is male-dominated.
The theme of the event was ‘Education, discipline, and patriotism are tanents of a professional soldier’. It aimed at young women who are venturing into maledominated careers. The young male counterparts were also not side-lined to participate as they are also the future of the country. The students got first-hand information from speakers of SANDF who presented various areas that encapsulate the department and that is the SA Navy, SA Air force, SA Army and SA Military.
SANDF is in the verge of creating awareness and changing perception about military career opportunities. Their main target is young adult men and women that are between the ages 18-35years. The Defence Force has already recruited 55 students in different disciplines who qualified or Work Integrated Learning programme. Staff members and students could not conceal the nerves as they had the opportunity to experience the military ma-

chines, equipment and devices on exhibition site. Some said it was a daunting task to come near the military area as they associate the machinery with war, blood and death. Others said the experience was an eye- opener that changed their perception about military as a professional field. The rest were excited that a different career path was brought to them. VUT could not be more proud of the opportunity as it benefited VUT students and learners in the Vaal region.

Cosmos to join local academy Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Jomo Cosmos, otherwise known as Ezinkosi, is expect to announce their venture with a local football academy – Nale Academy - in due cause. This was revealed by Cosmos boss Jomo Sono after his team’s 1 - 1 draw against FC Cape Town in the National First Division League match played at Isak Steyl Stadium over the weekend. Bra J, as he is affectionately known in South African football, was impressed by the structure of this Vanderbijlpark academy after it recently won the Jomo Cosmos Academy Tournament in both u/15 and u/17. Cosmos has since taken on five Nale Academy players, who are now under the watchful eye of Sono. Asked about the partnership, Sono says the two parties will draft a Memorandum of Understanding on how they are going to work. “I’m very impressed with the manner in which the academy operates in terms of professionalism. The only thing they need is Vaal support because there is clearly potential. We as Cosmos want to help not only Nale Academy but also Vaal youngsters because there is no professional soccer team in this region. The thing I like most about the team is that they are not money-driven people. They do this for love and for their passion for development, unlike other academies. He said he had never come across people who are so passio-

nate about football, especially the development of football in this country, and the results are there for everyone to see. “We want to take our relationship to the next level and help as much as we can,” says Sono. Nale Academy has played curtain-raisers to Jomo Cosmos’s National First Division League matches especially when they play home games at Isak Steyl Stadium.

An open letter to former Safa President Dr Oliphant
This letter is directed to the former Safa and Vaal Football Association (VFA) President Dr Molefi Oliphant: Dear Dr Oliphant, Sedibeng football is like a terminal patient left with a few days to live but who still thinks he has a chance of survival. The fact that you have ‘retired’ from football doesn’t mean you’re not aware of what is happening in Sedibeng as far as administration is concerned. The crisis is that people who know nothing about the history
of Sedibeng, formerly the Vaal, are busy destroying this beautiful game. The current football generation is not interested in the development of football as you were during your time as the association president. Shooting From The Hip appeals to you, Ntate Oliphant, to intervene before we lose potential footballers and administrators in this region. Enough is enough and somebody must put a stop to all the nonsense happening in our football. Dear Dr Oliphant, can you call a soccer Indaba as you did over the past 15 years? Shooting From The Hip has tried everything
to highlight problems in our local football but it all falls on deaf ears. Local footballers fight for positions and - with the AGM around the corner – there are secret meeting in this region with some individuals campaigning for the regional presidency. Shooting From The Hip doesn’t remember the last time this region had a meeting in which we discussed the future of our football. Instead meetings focus on suspending each other. The only time local administrators meet is during election times or when they want to destroy certain individuals. Shooting From The Hip is quite aware that
you know exactly what transpired last year ahead of the Safa national election when Dr Danny Jordaan was crowned president of the association. Knives were out for some individuals in this region, especially those who didn’t support Dr Jordaan. In conclusion, Ntate Oliphant, Shooting From The Hip will be waiting in anticipation for your response in this matter. Most people are counting on you to save football from these ‘ambitious’ football administrators. They take our football nowhere, to say the least!

This talented soccer star and cop achieved his feat when he recently rendered a Man Of The Match performance during the SAPS National Men’s Championship in Polokwane. He was instrumental when the Gauteng SAPS soccer team won the
National Championship, beating the Kwa-Zulu Natal SAPS team on penalties, to be crowned the tournament champion. The championship saw nine provinces battling for the honour. To make things interesting, not only was Const Holeni selected for the National Team but he was also chosen as the Man of the Match in their match against Limpopo Province. He was outstanding for the better part of the tournament. To date, this dynamic soccer player has been involved in the sport from an early age and, when he was 19, he was selected to play for the Maroko Swallows u/19s. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, about his
achievements, Holeni humbly explained that it was his love and passion for the sport that made him so successful. Vanderbijlpark SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Sam Manala was full of praise for Constable Holeni. He says he is very proud of what he achieved, not to mention that he made the station proud, and he wished him well in all his future tournaments. “We are really honoured to have a committed police officer like Constable Holeni in his job as well as loving the sport. His achievement will motivate other officers to be committed in what they are doing – their job and community activities,” he concludes.

Emerald Cup 2014 is here
SEDIBENG.- This week sees the build-up to the last leg of the Supreme Sand Racing Season: the Emerald Cup’s main race on Saturday September 27 will be aired live on Tellytrack, channel 239 on DSTV, at 13:30. Horse racing purists including owners, trainers and jockeys will lock eyes on this premier race, which received a cash injection when its stake was upped from the previous year’s R600 000 to R1 million. The Emerald Cup Grade 2 race will run over 1 450m on the Vaal sand track. The Brazilian bred winner of the August Stakes, Anger, will face off against a tough field including last year’s Emerald Cup winner, In a Rush. Apart from the electrifying live racing, race patrons will be treated to live music from award winning South African performers including Lloyd Cele, Lonehill Estate and Daniel Baron. Dubbed Africa’s richest race on sand and sponsored by the Emerald Resort, The Emerald Cup was first run in 2005 and is the Vaal Racecourse’s biggest race of the year. On the day, picnic sites will be available right next to the track to give patrons the experience and thrill of live racing. Food stalls and a play area for kids will also be on offer. Gates open at 11:00 and entry is FREE. To book your hospitality packages call Agnes on (011) 681 1702.

Celta Vigo Ladies FC needs your help Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG.- Themba Dlamini revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that he has been considering the sale of Celta Vigo Development Centre Ladies FC status due to financial challenges. This Zone 3-based side campaigned in the Sasol Women’s League and the club travelled as far as Pretoria to honour league matches.

However, Dlamini has come out in public to say he can no longer afford to run the team because of travelling expenses. To make things worse, Dlamini even posted on social media that he is selling the club’s status. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dlamini says the burden he carries on his shoulders is too heavy for his team to continue playing in the league. To date, Celta Vigo Ladies FC was promoted to Sa-
A1UQ46F
sol Women’s League after doing well in the Safa Sedibeng Women’s Regional League last season. Dlamini says the first option will be a Sedibeng-based buyer before he considers outside buyers. In heart-to-heart interview with Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dlamini says he has done everything that a man can do to save the club but he has failed. Dlamini’s problem is the challenge that most development teams experience in this
region as far as financial support is concerned: “I have tried everything but the load on my shoulders is too heavy for me because we don’t have sponsorship. We travel almost every weekend except when we play home games which is at the Zone 3 Stadium, so we travel a lot. We appeal to Sedibeng business people to help us with transport because this is our main problem,” says Dlamini.
