President Hyper opens worldclass taxi rank
Lazarus Dithagiso
VEREENIGING. - The general secretary of the Sharpeville Vereeniging to Vanderbijlpark Taxi Association (SVVTA) - Billy Williams - appealed to commuters to take care of the new taxi rank officially opened at the President Hyper. The rank was opened by the CEO of the President Hyper Basil Synodinos and the SVVTA. The rank will make it easy for commuters to avoid travelling long distances after shopping. Williams exclusively thanks the President Hyper management - es-
pecially Basil Synodinos (CEO) - for making business with the taxi industry. “We have loyal and dedicated commuters, drivers and marshals to take care of the rank,” says Williams. The opening of the new modern taxi rank at President Square at President Hyper (Vaal) was last week met with much excitement from customers and staff alike. Over 90% of staff are employed from the surrounding areas in the Vaal with the majority coming from Sharpeville and Sebokeng. This world class taxi rank is by far the best
facility in the Vaal Triangle. The spacious, modern, clean, well lit and safe rank is underroof and will serve customers and staff for the following main routes: Sharpeville, Sebokeng, Evaton, Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg. “The taxi rank will not only service the biggest and cheapest hypermarket in the area, but patrons to President Square shopping center will have a one-stop shopping experience with major brands such as Dischem, Baby City, Ackermans, Pep, Westpack Life Style
and many more,” says Synodinos. The centre is also well poised to satisfy the hungry shopper with food outlets such as Steers, Wimpy, Romans Pizza, Fishaway, King Pie and Smooch Frozen Yoghurt. “I believe that this unrivalled taxi rank will add massive value to both customers and staff of President Square, President Hyper and complement the excellent shopping experience,” says Synodinos adding, “We thank you for making us your number one!”.

thousands of rands. Trains were obliged to use one line. This angered commuters going to and from work and other destinations. The incident happened at Kwagastroom Station in Zone 10, though commuters claim the young boy started surfing from Vereeniging Station. He was warned that whatever he planned to do might well cost his life but the ‘surfing star’ claimed to know the train, He also argued that he has been surfing for some time. “Wumfazi wami lo” (This is my wife - she won’t harm me),” responded the 16- year-old as he climbed on top of the train. “He was singing and chanting on the train. Suddenly there was a huge bang like thunder and the train stopped.” “The young surfer fell to the ground with blood pouring from his nose. The cable of the train short-circuited. Power and lights went off and there was no more movement,” reports Releo Mokele. Numerous commuters wanted to skin the surfer alive. They knew the breakdown meant they would suffer the consequences for days as the train’s electricity cable had burned up. Angry commuters wanted to beat him up. Luckily he was saved by the quick response of the emergency department. The railway could not respond to questions asked by the Sedibeng Ster.

Vereeniging comes to a standstill VEREENIGING.- Unruly members of the community stormed the offices of the Sedibeng District Municipality. The ‘stormers’ are believed to have been ANC supporters from various branches in the area. They allegedly threatened staff members and broke down doors and windows on Tuesday morning, demanding the removal of mayor Simon Mofokeng. They barricaded roads leading to the municipal offices and businesses in town. The
members are believed to have been bused in following meetings at their respective branches, which don’t agree on who should lead the ANC in the region. The party’s regional elections are to be held soon and some people are demanding the exit of Mofokeng with immediate effect and the introduction
of Toy Manqa or Bob Mthembu, the current ANC Sedibeng regional secretary, as his replacement. At the time of going to print Sedibeng Ster could not get comment from Themba Ndaba, who is the ANC’s spokesperson in Sedibeng. The DA in Gauteng, however, strongly con-

demned the protests which they said were sanctioned by two opposing ANC factions in the Vereeniging central business district. “According to reports, the protesters are demanding the resignation of district mayor Mahole Mofokeng, accusing him of corruption and nepotism. “Protestors are wreaking havoc in the commercial centre by burning tyres and have brought business to a halt. The DA strongly condemns violence in any form, and we call on the ANC to deal with its internal problems as a matter of urgency – as residents are being negatively affected by the spill-over into the municipality’s ability to deliver services,” this from the DA’s Kingsol Chabalala. He adds that the ANC must separate the party from the state, and ensure that internal struggles do not affect residents and business government is meant to serve. Police were called to the scene and the situation calmed. Speaking to Sedibeg Ster, Lebo Mofokeng, acting Directo of External Communication at Sedibeng District Municipality, said they did not receive any communication from members of the community saying that they would like to see the mayor or stating their intentions as the mayor would have gladly met them and heard whatever they are dissatisfied with. “We are very sad about such behaviour of our people. I would like to think that these people know the correct channels they should follow in raising whatever they are dissatisfied with. As government, we would have heard them out. The way they did things is sad. “Had they followed the correct channels and wanted to see the mayor or hand over a memorandum that could have been arranged,” Mofokeng says.

Prisoner integration and rehabilitation is of importance Lerato Serero
SHARPEVILLE. - All they need is help from the relevant people. The members of the Ex-convicts, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Forum have gone from A to Z trying to look for help without success, hence their plea to relevant people, organisations and institutions for help. The organisation aims to help former prisoners with their reintegration into society through programmes such as communication, stress management, anger management and the importance of work. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sipho Ludada, the organisation’s general secretary, says, “We have exhausted all avenues in trying to get peo-
ple that could help us to help other ex-convicts so that they become respectable members of the community.” The organisation operates from the former Itsose Primary School. Japhta Moeketsi, the organisation’s chairperson, adds that they want to do away with the stigma that ex-convicts are not good for any community. “We also want to stop former prisoners from falling into the trap of going back to prison, in turn also helping the community and educating them about the dangers of committing crime and making them learn that crime does not pay,” Moeketsi ends. Any members of the community willoing to help can contact Sedibeng Ster on 016 950 7000.

Audience walks out on late MEC
Lazarus Dithagiso
EVATON. - Gauteng Public Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malebane was joined by Police, Emfuleni and Sedibeng municipal MMCs, the Department of Correctional Services, the Health Department, the Sebokeng Cluster Community Policing Forum and other stakeholders. This was when she consulted with communities about policing needs and priorities. The Evaton meeting forms part of the events attended and conducted by the Public Safety MEC in the five Evaton regions on February 18.
Consultation with the community gives the government and other stakeholders pointers on how to serve. The station commander of Evaton Brigadier Hester Bischoff as host was the first to highlight the challenges and statistics of crime in the area. The rate of murder and rape was high on the list followed by house-breaking and theft from homes and businesses. However, some community members say they have waited too long. They had also expected to be addressed by both the Sedibeng District mayor and the local Emfuleni mayor,
namely Mahole Mofokeng and Councillor Gretha Hlongwane, as per invitation. The audience were welcomed with apologies for both mayors not making it to the meeting. Much to their surprise, the MEC arrived an hour late while the programme was already winding down. Community members started to leave immediately after they were given the platform for questions and suggestions. Seeing that the number of the audience had reduced, and apparently to avoid embarrassment, programme director MMC Velly Mcera requested the MEC to take the podium
for responses. It is lip-service with compliance to push ahead the agenda of the day,” said one member of the audience. The audience kept shaking their heads when the MEC said that, in terms of the Liquor Act, music in taverns had to be switched off at about 24:00 and all patrons had to vacate the building before 02:00. She also encouraged Police and the By-Law Unit to take serious action against the initiations that take children by force. Most complaints directed at Police were for lack of service delivery and for being ignorant when called by the public.

Respect is earned, not given
A colleague of mine believes that once a wall falls and you try to fix it, it will never, ever be the same again. She believes that the cracks you have fixed or try to fix on the wall will always show whenever the cement disintegrates. I could not agree with her more. A liaison between two parties is broken once one shows the other disrespect. A person once complained, “I am upset because people don’t respect me.” Her friend’s advice: “First, you have to earn it.” Perhaps I am just naive, but it seems to me that, lately people are just not as respectful as they used to be. Much of our culture believes that you do not have any obligation to respect someone unless or until they respect you first. Although there are MANY other ways to show respect, these are the few that I find very important. Respect is viewed on many different levels as well. It cannot be measured as a quantity and cannot be bought or traded. It is one of those things that is earned and built over time and not given to every Tom, Dick and Harry. But that can be lost with one stupid or inconsiderate act. I
think it’s important to realise that respect as a word can actually mean different things. On the one hand, there is a baseline respect that we owe every human being. On the other hand, respect may refer to a sort of reverence and admiration that should be earned. For example, I would like to think that I respect everyone I interact with on a daily basis and I don’t judge them. Still, there are only a few people that I respect in the sense that I admire them and they in turn respect and admire the person I am, faults and all. Courtesy is given. Respect is earned. Everyone deserves courtesy, general politeness and consideration. Respecting someone - that is something I believe is earned. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is not imposed, nor begged. It’s offered and earned. Respect is for those who deserve it, not for those who think for themselves. Stay true to your word. If you say you will have something done by a certain date, make sure it is turned in complete and on time. Now true to my colleague’s word, once trust is broken it will never be regained as it is irreparable. “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me ... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” Jackie Robinson. Lerato....

These learners were accepted to study Medicine at the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) for the current year 2015. In his closing remarks the Executive Mayor said: “School encourages discipline and violence in schools should be discouraged and condemned in the strongest possible terms. GREAT EXPECTATIONS FOR FDDI PARTNERSHIP
VUT exhibition stand drew a lot of attention VUT management welcomes the FDDI delegation Anne Naidu
Anne Naidu
Great minds gathered together last week at the Innovation Bridge exhibitions held at the Council for Scientific and Industry Research. The CSIR was abuzz on 2nd and 3rd February 2015 when more than 37 exhibitors used state-of-the-art systems to showcase their latest inventions and innovations. The Innovation Bridge is renowned as South Africa’s Premier Technology Showcase and Matchmaking event, bringing products and people together to encourage collaboration. VUT’s Technology Transfer and Innovation Directorate (TTI) felt privileged to have formed part of this exciting event under the theme: Green and Clean Technology. The TTI’s exhibition stand drew a lot of attention with many prospective clients enquiring about its latest innovations and the techniques used to create the products on show such as the beneficiation of leather shaving and the water purification system. Mr Mark Johnson; Manager of the Enterprise Development Unit, was given the opportunity to address the delegates on the TTI’s technology transfer and commercialization opportunities which could lead to future collaborations.
“We are engaging with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and are honored to have been requested to submit proposals to establish technology platforms,” he said after the event.
Following the visit of Professor Irene Moutlana, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) to the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in India last year, substantial progress is underway at our Southern Gauteng Science Park in Sebokeng. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has forged a solid working relationship with the FDDI and the Indian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Textiles. They have seconded a team of six professional experts to the National Footwear Leather Cluster (NFLC) which was established at VUT. The Indian delegation from the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) that arrived at our Southern Gauteng Science Park in Sebokeng last month, has already started working on its brief of developing a curriculum that will help to establish a fully-fledged production line for the National Footwear Leather Cluster (NFLC) in South Arica. On 5 February 2015, Professor Irene Moutlana, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, together with senior management staff, invited the six experts to an official welcome luncheon, hosted at the Vanderbijlpark campus. The main aim of the team is to share their individual expertise by developing the training modules that will enhance the basic skills of existing entrepreneurs and help train locals in the art of shoemaking while also establishing links with other international partners. “We are indeed privileged to have been chosen as the preferred provider of this niche area by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and we are certain that, together with our FDDI partners, we will meet our mandate to enhance the production of shoemaking in South Africa,” said Professor Moutlana. The relationship that VUT has forged with the FDDI, part of the Indian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, and the DTI in South Africa, is sure to give the footwear industry a step up. “As part of its efforts to support the clothing, textile and leather sector, the DTI approved a grant of R69.2 million for the establishment of a National Footwear and Leather Cluster through the Competitiveness Improvement Programme (CIP). The work of the cluster is directly responsible for the creation of approximately 2000 sustainable jobs and the reduction in the trade deficit of R1.4 billion through import substitution by local retailers,” Davies concluded.

Major improvement in learners’ performance
SEDIBENG.- Impressive results have been achieved by students on the Emerald Foundation and the Generation @ programme. Good news is that 95-percent of all the children who completed the Emerald Foundation’s Generation @ Programme passed their 2014 school grades. Five schools in the Vaal Triangle, sponsored by the Emerald Foundation, went through the Generation @ programme, which is facilitated by Lusa Community Chest. It was reported that there was a positive shift in the learners’ attitude and a major improvement in their academic performance. Generation @ is a school development programme that teaches children to make the right decisions and to formulate their own principles and values. Additionally, the programme assists the principal in vision-casting, strategic planning and personal development. All teachers in the school go through a Transformer Training programme, focusing on personal and emotional development and mastery. “We are extremely proud of the achievements over the past two years and have committed to sponsoring the Generation @ Programme again this year. Mooivaal Media does it again VEREENIGING.- Your favourite newspaper Sedibeng Ster was awarded the ‘Excellent Community Newspaper’ Golden Arrow award at the PMR Awards held at the Bon Hotel in Vereeniging on Monday. Lerato Serero, Sedibeng Ster News editor, says the award shows the level of commitment and dedication that the team is putting out. “This also goes to show the service that we render to our community and the level of professionalism and the seriousness with which we take our careers,” Serero says. The aim of the Awards is to create a global and unique marketing tool for the company, department and/or institution, to enhance excellence in the industry and to set a benchmark in different industries. The awards are also indicators of a company, department or institution’s competencies. PMR Africa wants companies to utilise the awards, not as a marketing tool only, but also to thank personnel and staff for creating perception and reality out there that the company, department or institution, is an undisputed leader in its respective industry. Big Save Cash & Carry Evaton: Supermarket & Wholesaler
Address: 175 Adams Road, Evaton. Big Save started out in 1989 as a family business, owned by the Jardim Family, trading as Waltloo Wholesalers. In 1995, it changed its name to Big Save. Big Save Evaton is part of the Big Save Group, which has 5 other Cash & Carry outlets and 5 liquor outlets, all trading under the Big Save brand. George Versfeld and Patrick Oertel partnered with Big Save in a joint venture to open the Evaton Branch. The other Big Save stores are in Waltloo, Pretoria Market, Hammanskraal, Mabopane and Marble Hall. The building in which Big Save Evaton is located, was built 5 years
ago and had been waiting for a suitable operator to commence business. During 2014, Patrick Oertel, who has 33 years experience in retailing and wholesaling in South Africa, and George Versfeld, who has 35 years experience in banking in South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, concluded a deal with the Big Save Group which led to Big Save Evaton opening its doors on the 12 December, 2014. Big Save Evaton employed 90% of its staff from the Evaton/Sebokeng area, almost all of whom had been previously unemployed. Big Save Evaton offers a comprehensive range of groceries, perish-

Big Save Evaton is referred to as a “hybrid” store in that it caters for the needs of traders and public alike. Until now, traders and organisations wanting to buy in bulk at competitive prices had to travel far distances. Now, it’s on their doorstep. Tick, tick, tick... like a time bomb The clock is ticking for Safa Sedibeng to select and prepare the Future Champions regional squad. TOUCHLINE has learned that some Safa regions have already started with their preparation for the Future Champions squads, while here at home off the field politics delays the process. TOUCHLINE is also aware that Safa Sedibeng has already received the relevant correspondence with regard to the Future Champions, but the squad has not yet been selected. The only thing that grabs the focus of local football administrators right now is the annual general meeting (AGM) for elections. They forget that football must be played. For the last three weeks, the only topic local administrators entertain deals with who is going to be the chairman of the Emfuleni Local Football Association and Safa President, but nothing is said about junior programmes. TOUCHLINE is worried about the current state of our football in this region because attention is on administration, despite the fact that the regional squad must be ready for Future
Champs. TOUCHLINE is also concerned with the divisions between local administrators and coaches in this region. How can one explain this situation to the interim committee which was selected only two weeks ago - and already meetings are being held by some Safa SAB League teams who are against the committee. But why? Why has our football become a sacrifice to our egos? This is not the football I grew up admiring so much when I was a little boy playing in the dusty streets of Evaton. This is not the kind of football I dreamt about. This is not the football I fell in love with. This is no longer about football. It is a power struggle, to say the least. TOUCHLINE advises all those who are involved in football to put their houses in order before the next Emfuleni Local Football Association election because whatever is happening is not good for football. Can’t somebody grow up and smell the coffee – this is our football. This is the future of our children! Can’t local football administrators and coaches put aside their egos and pride for the sake of these youngsters? Right now what is supposed to happen is the selection of the regional squad for Future Champions and the rest should follow. What will we say to these boys when this region fails to participate in this tournament, which is one of the biggest on the junior football calendar?!

Real Hearts at the summit of the SAB League log Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - It’s early days but it seems Real Hearts will be crowned the Safa Sedibeng SAB League champion at the end of the season if their current form suggests anything. This Heidelberg-based side is sitting at the summit of the Safa Sedibeng SAB League Log with 26 points from 12 games. Real Hearts played to a 1 - 1 draw with Mighty Blues FC at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday. However, Real Hearts FC should consider themselves unlucky because this was one game they should have won to widen the gap at the top. In fact, poor decisions by the referee, particularly the assistant, robbed Real Hearts FC of three points, to say the least. This was poor match-officiating, taking into consideration that this was a topof-the-clashes fixture, with both sides challenging the league championship. In fact, the game deserved much better officiating from match officials. Mighty Blues FC were the first to score, but their lead was overhauled in a short space of ten minutes by rampaging Real Hearts. The visitors put pressure on the home team and it came as no surprise
when finally they found an equaliser with a full-time score of 1 - 1. To date, Real Hearts FC has been crowned the Safa Sedibeng SAB League champion when, two seasons ago, they failed to gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League, formerly the Vodacom League.
