SASOLBURG. – The Sasolburg Police appeals to members of the public with any information that may lead to the arrest of a suspect in connection with a carjacking. The man, aged between 40 and 45, is wanted in connection with an alleged carjacking that took place in Vaalpark. The victim alleges that on 18 June at 09:05 he was driving a white Quantum with the registration FDY 462 FS when a white Golf GTI with 4 males tried to stop him by flickering their lights at him. He did not stop the vehicle. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at him and ordered him to stop. Two of the suspects put him in the Golf and the other two drove off with his vehicle. The two suspects in the Golf drove off with him and dropped him off in the bushes in Vanderbijlpark. A description of one of the suspects was given to police. He is an African male, medium complexion, 1.7m tall with a medium build and short dark hair. He spoke Zulu and Sotho. Young women trade as sex workers to access nyaope Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Some young women are forced to leave their homes to sell their bodies so they can access money to buy illegal drugs, mainly ‘nyaope.’ Two women decided speak for the first

time to the media about their living conditions. Mmeme Setau (22) and Mantwa Tshekesi (23) - not their real names - say they started using drugs at the age of 16. They claim that they were curious to know what it feels like. “Our parents did not know that we bunked school. Every afternoon we would come home as if we just come back from school,” Setau says. After a while it became increasingly difficult for the girls to concentrate in class. Eventually they had no other choice but to turn to prostitution to sustain their habits. They say that it is easy to find clients outside taverns or on busy streets. The apparatuses they use for the drugs include lubricated needles in a condom, a spike or needle to inject, a spoon to warm the nyaope, matches, cigarette-filters and shoelaces to slow the blood in their veins. Tshekesi, mother of a five-year-old boy, says it is impossible to stop using. “We appeal to any good Samaritans who could come to our rescue. We need rehab but we are told it costs more than R15 000. We have had enough of prostitution and there is nothing that we can buy with the R10 we receive from our clients. Nyaope is a drug of its own kind. The more you smoke, the more you need.” Setau said she started smoking after she met the father of her child who is currently serving three years behind bars for house-brea-

king and theft: When approached for comment, Mmeme’s mother Lina Setau (56) agreed that her daughter is addicted to nyaope. She left home at the age of 12 and returned a few months ago. “She wants to quit. I don’t have money to take her for expensive rehabilitation. She steals from the house and the neighbours,” she says.

Vaal netball team players out of hospital Zacharia Nale

Scrap metal vultures ‘feed’ themselves on metals from the ground after a truck driver lost control at the Frikkie Meyer and Nobel Boulevard robots near Boipatong on Saturday. Police looked on helplessly as there was nothing they could do to control the scrap metal vultures. Police report that people hang on to the back of the truck on its way to offload scrap at nearby Cape Gate. Apparently the driver was trying to swerve quickly to stop them from grabbing hold of and then hanging on to the back of the trailer. No injuries were reported. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

SEDIBENG. - The Vaal netball team players have been discharged from hospital. Only two remain in hospital. This was after Sedibeng Ster reported recently that the Vaal netball team had been involved in a horrible accident on the way to the SA Netball Championship recently held in Cape Town. The Vaal netball team couldn’t participate because of the accident, which saw eleven of their players admitted to hospital. Dudu Msane, Vaal Netball Association President, who was also involved in the accident, says all the players have been discharged except two players who are reported to be in critical condition. However, Msane was adamant that the two will be discharged any time now. “With everyone’s prayers, I believe tho-

se two will get well soon. We pray every day for them and I know God hears our prayers,” Msane said. Msane thanks the Sedibeng people for their support and prayers while they were hospitalised in Cape Town.

Be wary of card-cloners

Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Customers withdrawing money from ATMs in different areas are warned to be careful and not to ask strangers for help. Vaalgate Security personnel may have prevented a case of card-cloning when they caught a man running away with a young girl’s bank card after he had snatched it at an ATM in Vaalgate. Although the culprit maintained that the young girl had given him her card voluntarily, security footage proved otherwise: “You gave me your card, I never tried to steal it. You don’t have proof that I stole your card,” he said. According to North-West University student Lerato Mokoena (not her real name), she had rushed to the ATM to withdraw money for transport. “I was standing in a queue behind this older man. I noticed that he was taking his time at the ATM so I just thought that he was having problems. After a while he was done,” she says. Mokoena proceeded to the ATM and

noticed that her card was not accepted in the card-slot. She also noticed characters and options she had never seen on an ATM screen before: “The man then approached me and said ‘This is what you need to do,’ making a gesture as though he was pushing the card into the slot, while already he had stolen it.” Mokoena says she immediately alerted security who then ran after and caught the man who still had her card on him. “I immediately went to the ATM to check the balance. My money was all there. But the public must be warned about such people,” Mokoena concluded. At the time of Sedibeng Ster’s departure, police had not arrived on the scene.

Province seriously concerned about divisive cores in regional ANC Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - African National Congress (ANC) provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile warned regional branches to stop destabilising the organisation. He said regional cores and photocopied application forms are denting the image of the organisation. He was speaking at a special meeting hosted in the Banquet Hall last Thursday. Mashatile was accompanied by Boyzi Man-

eli, acting provincial secretary. Unfounded rumours are that leaders fraudulently use an illegal bank stamp to increase memberships to gain control ahead of the regional conference. A reliable Sedibeng Ster source said police refuse to open a case of fraud. A certain bank said it did not know about the alleged stamp. Mashatile requested the ANC branches to stop working parallel he says, “A divided region becomes weak in the province. The re-

gion must speak in one voice, pulling in the same direction with support from branches. “We all belong to the ANC. Stop stealing, photocopying personal documents or membership forms. It’s a criminal offence. The BGM must win without cheating. Let’s go to the branches with one voice of the ANC not as a core. Do not manipulate branches or people. Leadership is shown by its work.” He said no guns are allowed at any conference and that those who misuse power in an

ANC meeting will be expelled. “We have to get our priorities straight. Leaders are not angels; they make mistakes. It’s the prerogative of branches to choose a chairperson or secretary. We work through the constitution and the issue of cores is of serious concern to the ANC. There’s nothing wrong in having cores as long they are about bettering the party. Let’s build, unite and take the ANC to a higher level of the Lekgotla.” he concluded.

In African custom it is a known fact that an elder does not become friends with children, as when they get ‘used’ to him or her they are going to be disrespectful. This was proven last week with what transpired in parliament where a young man pointed fingers at an old man demanding answers. The young man was not happy with the way the

5

Is this how it should be done? elder was answering questions on when and how he was going to pay back part of the money spent on upgrades to his private residence. The fact of the matter is that the young man saw nothing wrong with his actions as he and the old man were once ‘birds of a feather that flew together. South Africa is a democratic country. Do you get my point? One of the basic lessons of our childhood days is ‘respect your elders.’ “These things of points of order are the ones that you are hiding behind,” the youngster said. It is now the young man talking to elders the way he likes; it is him now doing the lecturing. He is downright disrespectful. Since the appoint-

ment of this young man into parliament, it (the parliament) has been turned into a circus, proving my point that once you become friends with people younger than you, particularly in a serious working environment such as politics things will eventually reach explosion point. It is however quite reassuring that extraordinary measures have been taken to prevent the repeat of the chaos that broke out in parliament last week. These are extraordinary measures in the event of a repetition of the situation. We truly cannot have that, where youngsters speak out of turn to elders. In another view one could say that in this instance the elder is also to blame as the pair was once

‘lovey dovey’ and the youngster will never again respect him. In this world, the elder teach the younger. Whatever we learn is from them. If you have a sound value system and morals, if you can instinctively tell what is wrong and what is right, thank your elders for teaching you the distinction. The society is made from us; if the base is shaky the buildings won’t survive. Whenever you see a strong building, thank those who strengthened the foundation. A man is judged by his character and this is gifted by the elders. So respect is an obvious thing to follow, just think about that. Lerato…

Hospersa, NEHAWU and Denosa members at court Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Three executive members of NEHAWU were arrested on Friday after apparently venting their frustrations at Thami Ngcana who is the Labour Manager at Johan Heyns Clinic. This was brought to the attention of the Clinic. Especially aggravating was an observation by strikers that Ngcana was operating the clinic like a ‘tuck shop’ by running all departments with an iron fist. The three Bassie Tshabalala, chairperson, Ruben Maphoto, deputy chairperson, and Lazarus Nkopane, secretary, all from NEHAWU- spent

over 24 hours in police cells on charges of common assault. The trio was released on Monday morning by the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court in response to a cluster of Sedibeng District Health Service members who were chanting outside court. It is alleged that Ngcana opened a case of assault against the trio during his forced removal by angry members of NEHAWU from the clinic on Wednesday which resulted in the allegations of assault. Tshabalala denies all claims of assault: “We are not going to be disrupted or disturbed by the negative plans orchestrated by Ngcana and his fellow comrades.

NEWAHU members show no mercy and protest outside the Johan Heyns Clinic in Vanderbijlpark on Monday.

“We have won the first battle and we stand by our motive,” says Tshabalala. During their release Nkopane addressed the masses of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA), Health & Other Services Personnel Trade Union of

South Africa (HOSPERSA), outside the clinic: “We are coming for the clinic management because we are in misery due their negligence. They run this clinic without direction, ” says Nkopane who asked all members to disperse and go back to work in order to sustain stability and order at the Clinic.

VUT COMMUNITY WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION CELEBRATES INFORMATION UNITES VUT WOMEN DAY

The Department of International Relations and Advancement held an International Information Day on 6 August 2014 at the Vaal University of Technology’s Desmond Tutu Great Hall. The theme of the day was “Bridging barriers to internationalisation”. The objective of the International Information Day is to provide the VUT community with relevant information on study opportunities available through exchange programmes as well as details on bursaries; on and off campus facilities and services (e.g. banking, medical aid schemes, social, economic, cultural and recreational) and visiting scholar activities. “Let school be a place of integration not alienation,” said Professor Irene Moutlana, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at VUT as she welcomed people that were present to attend the event. She emphasised the importance of equality in the institution and

alleviating spaces between international and local students. “There will be a lot of information put at your disposal and I urge you to take the trouble to learn as much as possible about the opportunities that lie within the walls of our institution… This celebration – of International Information Day – is the first step in truly anchoring internationalisation at the core of the university establishment,” she said. VUT FM broadcasted live on the day and the VUT Choir provided entertainment. Should you need any further information, contact Mr Siyabonga Kohli, Manager: International Relations and Advancement at 016 950 6699 or e-mail: skohli@vut.ac.za The formal programme was followed by exhibitions of different stakeholders from government departments and agencies, the private sector and international organisations.

Ms Zelda la Grange, former personal assistant to the late Dr Nelson Mandela, Ms Tumi Morake, a wellknown South African comedienne and Professor Irene Moutlana, Vice Chancellor and Principal VUT.

Khanyisa Peter and Nontobeko Zondi

This year’s much-anticipated Women’s Day celebration took place on Friday 08 August 2014 at the Vaal University of Technology’s Desmond Tutu Great Hall. In her opening address, Professor Irene Moutlana, Vice- Chancellor and Principal VUT, said: “It is extremely difficult to be a woman in the 21st century. Many women are struggling to discover who they are and where they stand today in the family, the community and the world.” She went on to emphasise the duties and expectations of a woman in this century.

This year’s special guests included Ms Zelda la Grange, former personal assistant to the late Dr Nelson Mandela, and Ms Tumi Morake, a well-known South African comedia. The two iconic women kept the crowd entertained as Ms la Grange shared her memorable moments with her famous boss while Ms Morake reminded the crowd of the lighter side of womanhood and made them laugh their lungs out at her jokes.

VUT ADDRESSES STUDENT EXPERIENCE Khanyisa Peter

Student experience is one of many subjects that are at the heart of the Centre for Academic Development at the Vaal University of Technology. It is a topic that might be taken for granted in higher educational institutions at large but has a huge impact on the products that the universities produce. The department hosted a staff development conference on Monday 11-Tuesday 12 August 2014 under the theme ‘e-learning and student experience’.

VUT delegates at the Staff Development Workshop

The first day of the conference looked at the possibilities of embedding e-learning with current teaching and learning methods. Dr Paulina Machika, Executive Director: Centre for academic Development explained the process taken to introduce e-learning at VUT. She acknowledged that we live in a technological era where VUT cannot afford to lag behind. She explained that VUT is at a stage of innovation and has the opportunity to build eknowledge. The academics who attended

www.vut.ac.za

shared mixed views on the subject such as resources, finances, training of staff members and the anticipated impact thereof. The discussion continued to the next day where external guests and staff members who attended presented their papers and surveys on the subject matter. Topical issues that many papers pursued involved entrepreneurial orientation, online learning, research, work integrated learning and international students to mention a few. Professor Irene Moutlana, ViceChancellor and Principal, expressed her undivided support to staff members in developing innovative teaching methods. She encouraged lecturers to be confident and create measure of discipline in classrooms. Dr Machika expressed her appreciation for active participation of those who attended during panel discussion.

Are you addicted to stress? A little stress in your life is actually good for you. It wakes up your creativity, fuels your vitality and keeps your immune system vigi-

lant. The qualifying word is “little”. The problem with any addiction is that the high is transitory and one always needs a bigger high

to experience the rush. Addiction gives a person a false sense of control. Deep down the addict has lost personal power. A stress-addict is looking to feel numb through distraction to avoid dealing with the source of unhappiness and loss of control. Here are some strategies to break the pattern of stress-addiction: - Recognize your stress-addiction; simply by being aware, you can break the pattern. - Start by being kind to everyone in your life – strangers included. Observe yourself being kind to everyone. Now, learn to be as kind to yourself as you are to a stranger. - Write a kindness journal - with two columns - where you list the concrete acts of kindness you do for others and for yourself

9

every day. Try to keep the lists balanced. - Take walking meditations because sitting in a lotus position is probably not for you. Put one foot in front of the other and see that you are moving forward by relaxing and absorbing the beauty of the scenery. - Take a long hot shower or go to a steam room/sauna to release the toxins in your body. The heat will relax your muscles, clean out your pores and release physical tensions. You are now ready to listen to music, read a book, or enjoy a glass of cool water with a few sliced strawberries suspended in it. - Awaken your senses instead of numbing them. Experiment with fragrances, new foods, new CDs. Take out your camera and start shooting where your eyes are drawn. See if there is a pattern. - Begin a strength-training program. Strength-training will help you find empowerment and clarity. This focus will transfer into daily life.

Vaal High former learners grace Vaal AIDS Based Home Care

SEBOKENG. - The class of ‘99 and 2000 of the Vaal High Secondary School embarked on a community outreach to give back to the needy and ill. This group of vibrant young women who were classmates some 14 years ago, met on a social network. Vaal AIDS Home Based Care was the lucky organisation to be chosen by these young mothers and women. They say they had always wanted to meet up again even after most of them had ventured forth on different careers and gone to different places. “Luck was on our side and we used social networking for a good cause,” says Skinny Ndhleleni. The group bought food and groceries for the home. A tour was conducted by Grace Lengene, founder and manager of the home. Lengene says God made these children a blessing. “I love my work and what God has granted me to serve His people with love and care. The home has children who are grown up

and still treat us as their parents. They know where they come from,” says the foreverpraying Lengene. Ndheleni says they wished to have more friends so they could do more for the children of Vaal Aids Home Based Care. She sends her gratitude and thanks to Zodwa Lebakeng, Ndu Chalale, Mathapelo Makate and Josephine Mokoena.

Thanks but NO thanks! Shooting From The Hip doesn’t understand why some football administrators and officials are still in football. I thought they were long dead and buried but I was wrong. The question is: what are they still doing in our football, because their time has expired. Or do they want to make sure that our football is ‘dead’ as well? To them football is all about elections and positions; hence, they suspend each other, especially those who are a threat to them. Yours

truly Shooting From The Hip has been approached by some officials to stand for either the Safa Sedibeng Presidency or Emfuleni Local Football Association chairmanship, but I made it clear to them that I am not interested.” There are better things Shooting From The Hip can do than fight grown men with egos. Thanks but no thanks! The interest of Shooting From The Hip is to serve the development of football, not positions. To put it bluntly, Shooting from the Hip has no interest in the abovementioned positions – they are not my dream, to say the least. If Shooting From The Hip agrees to take one of these positions, it would be like selling my soul for power and status.

The problem with local football administrators is that they can ‘make you fail’ like they did with others before them. The truth of the matter is that football has become a ‘tender’ to some people. Respect for this beautiful game has gone and people are only interested in enriching themselves at the expense of our young athletes. It hurts when Shooting From The Hip recalls how this region used to respect football administrators in the past. Those were men and women who had vision as far as the development of football is concerned. However, recently, football administrators are only concerned with their pockets and say

to HELL with the development of football. So, ladies and gentlemen, Shooting From The Hip is not interested in being Safa Sedibeng President or ELFA chairman. To me, football is not a matter of life and death. NO! Football is the beautiful game that unifies all the races - black, white, Indian, coloured and others. As things stand now, no-one knows what is happening as far as football is concerned in this region except that people are fighting for positions. There is no talk about a professional team in this region, as no-one has the courage to initiate the process. They can only talk, talk and talk, with no action.

NWU players at UCSA Games in Zambia

SEDIBENG. - Three North West University (NWU) Vaal players hoisted the South African flag high before they lost 3-0 to Namibia in the final of the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games held in Zambia from August 16 – 22. They are Tumelo Thebe, Morgan Yekani and Tshepiso Maimane. The three represented South Africa in the competition. They made Sedibeng proud when they produced five-star performances during the tournament, which came to an end last Friday. Tumelo Thebe, the NWU Vaal soccer team striker, was instrumental when the team booked their place in the final. He scored three goals in the tournament and he could have scooped the Top Goal Score of The Tournament Award if he was more clinical in front of goals. However, Thebe was happy with his overall performance, saying the tournament was a learning experience for him and the South African team. He says bringing the silver medals home was an achievement, taking into consideration the standard of the competition. Thebe

says they were up against the best on the continent. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport on arrival, Thebe said he was honoured to be part of the South African team. He believes he learned a lot from the tournament on and off the field: “I’m very proud of my performance and scoring three goals is something that I will not forget. I wish this tournament opens doors for me as far as my football career is concerned. I think I’m ready for new challenges playing in top flight football,” says Thebe. Thebe believes he is ready to play in PSL or National First Division League taking into consideration his performance in this tournament. His teammates Maimane and Yekani of the NWU Vaal soccer team echoed his sentiments. They also believe that Thebe has the potential to become a big name in South African football. Cosmos to play their NFD League match in Sedibeng VANDERBIJLPARK. - The good news for Sedibeng soccer fans is that Jomo Cosmos FC will play its first game of the National First Division League 2014-2015 soccer season in the Vaal. Ezenkosi hosts Black Leopards FC in the opening match of the NFD League scheduled to take place at the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT’s) Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark on Sunday. Kick-off is at 15:00. Entry for adults is R10, while juveniles get in for free. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by club publicity officer Randzo Sono.

1 Voortrekker Street Vereeniging Tel: 016 455 2360 Fax: 016 455 4009 admin@auto-wise.co.za www.auto-wise.co.za

Cosmos used the same venue two seasons ago when the club reclaimed their Absa Premier League status; however, they were relegated at the end of the same season. According to Sono (Randzo) they decided to play this game in the Vaal to acknowledge the support of the Sedibeng people. Not long ago Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono said he didn’t understand why Sedibeng doesn’t have a professional team, despite the fact that it has produced the finest talent in South African football for the past 20 years. In fact, bringing this game here is an aspect of Sono’s bid to restore hope to the Sedibeng A1UH1H5

community. Nale Football Academy will play a curtain-raiser match against Jomo Cosmos U/15 at 12:00 on the day. “Mr Sono has a high regard for Sedibeng people and bringing this game here to the Vaal acknowledges the support this region gave to him in the past. But again, for the past 20 years, Cosmos has always had players from this region,” says Randzo Sono. Sono (Randzo) appeals to Sedibeng’s soccer-lovers to come in big numbers to witness the mother of all battles as both teams are eager to regain their Absa Premier Soccer League status. This encounter promises fireworks, with Black Leopards playing entertaining possession football. This Limpopo-based outfit failed to gain promotion last season after doing so well throughout the season.
