Boiketlong on fire Lazarus Dithagiso and Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Poor service delivery angered the residents of Boiketlong informal settlement popularly known as ‘Serope se a benya’ on Monday. The residents ran amok in the early hours of Tuesday and barricaded the intersection of Moshoeshoe near Masoheng and further closed an intersection between Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom and Sebokeng with big rocks and road signs. Frustration led to the attack and burning of the shack of ward 36 Councillor Maselloane Nthebe. This was after they pulled her two cars from the yard and set them on fire as well. Nthebe was then rushed to hospital due to serious injuries she sustained during the commotion. Apparently the situation swung out of control following a meeting on Sunday. “We are tired of empty promises. The land owner claims that he is waiting for the government for further negotiation,” says Vincent Tobias, a resident. Residents say they have always listened to empty promises and now want the ruling party to act. “We don’t have proper water, sanitation, toilets, or electricity. People lose their lives due to usage of paraffin,” says Lerato Lebelo, a resident. The community said they do not want to see Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor, Simon Mofokeng or Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Greta Hlongwane and that the only person they want to see is Human Settlements minister, Tokyo Sexwale. Stanley Gaba, ELM Head of Communication, says several meetings have been held with the community about developments in the area. “We do not condone violence and we understand their frustrations. The land that they are living on belongs to the private sector. We are still in negotiations with the land owner,” he concludes..

Boiketlong residents took to the streets on Tuesday morning and burned a councillor’s shack and two cars in retaliation for a lack of service delivery. Photos: Lazarus Dithagiso.

‘Chippa’ gets 12 years in prison Pinky Mofokeng

VEREENIGING. - Former VUT FM presenter and newsreader Essua Dipale (33) was found guilty of molesting a 16-year-old boy by the Vereeniging Magistrates Court last

Wednesday. Fondly known as ‘Chippa,’ Dipale appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was also found guilty of threatening the victim with a knife before raping him. Dipale was sentenced to 12 ye-

ars in prison. According to his Police record, it is not the first time Chippa has molested a boy. Ntswaki Motobuli, the victim’s mother, says, “I am not satisfied with the sentencing because it is not enough. He will come back and rape someone else and I’m totally not happy - I just have to be grateful that justice has been done.”

Not in our zone! Lerato Serero

SEBOKENG. - These are our brothers and sisters! In unison, the residents of Zone 11 prevented a looting at one of the foreign nationals’ businesses on Thursday. Led by local businessman Apollo Sandamela community members armed themselves with sticks, baseball bats and other weapons and stopped a group of young men from raiding a store in their area. The lootings had apparently started as protests against service delivery, there were also allegations that a local was shot by one of the foreign nationals, hence the attacks on their businesses. Sedibeng Ster, however, could not confirm this allegation. “We are not going to let them come into this area and hurt or steal from our African brother,” said a furious community member. Sandamela says, “This is what the community wants; they know that these foreigners

are helping them and they cannot afford to let any harm come to them. “This is not about politics or service delivery anymore but about pure crime as these thugs are now attacking everyone including us local business people.” All foreign-owned stores remain closed in Sebokeng as almost all of them have been looted and left stockless. Baseball bats, sticks and all! Zone 11 resi dents defied all odds to protect a foreign business in their area during last week’s rampage. Photo: Lerato Serero

Teacher in abuse drama? Fatima Phiri

EVATON - . An 11-year-old Evaton school pupil struggles to talk herself into the daily journey to attend school. This, she said, is because her teacher curses and mocks her. According to the pupils’ grandmother Anna Ditaba* (not her real name), her grandchild always comes home crying, claiming that her teacher hates her and says she’s satanic. The pupil says that her teacher refuses to mark her schoolwork and has told her repeatedly to get someone to do so. “I don’t understand why she must get someone to mark her books when she has a teacher to do that - it’s her job,” Ditaba says. The teacher is alleged to have beaten the pupil with a cable in the first term of school. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster the teacher agrees that she gave the youngster a beating but denies calling her names or refusing to mark her work. “I was emotional and angry when I hit her at the time because she disrespected me. I apologised,” she says. She adds that she would never use vulgar language in front of pupils as she is a professional. The only time she doesn’t mark pupils’ books is when they do self-assessments; therefore pupils mark each other’s work. According to the teacher the pupil is the one that uses vulgar language and tells people she’s satanic. She says she has tried countless times to arrange for a meeting with the childs’ grandmother, but so far the grandmother has not responded. “I would like for us to meet so we can find a way forward to help her granddaughter and get the truth out of her because I don’t hate her, nor do I swear at her,” says the educator. School authorities are also said to still be waiting to meet with the pupil’s grandmother.

The young pupil shows the bruises that she apparently suffered following a bea ting by her teacher in the first term. Photo: Supplied.

Lerato Serero News Editor Comments

Fear of xenophobic attacks have gripped this country yet again. I, like a host of others, am quite disturbed by scenes that happened (and are still happening) all over Sedibeng this past week. Crucially, it was found that foreigners were particularly targeted during service delivery protests. These attacks on foreign nationals’ businesses particularly Somalis, Bangladeshis, Ethiopians and Pakistanis, all in the name of service delivery, are unwarranted. I have for years been ‘preaching’ that a lack of service delivery in this area is a time-bomb waiting

Is this warranted? to explode and as much as I would like to say that ‘I told you so’; this is exactly what is happening. We all saw it coming, yet those responsible and that have power to resolve such matters decided to turn a blind eye on the issue, leaving them with this mess that they have to resolve. After the attacks targeting foreign nationals and other marginalised groups in May 2008, there was an explosion of interventions intended to address the causes of the violence, and/or prevent a repeat of 2008’s events.

Power mongers?

Many institutions and civil society organisations spent large sums of money on these wellintentioned activities, but their impact on the stated goals remains uncertain at this point. In South Africa foreigners, especially black foreigners, have come to be perceived as a direct threat to the future economic health of the country. They are seen to be sponging off public services while meticulously chipping away at the economy for their own survival. There is a belief that the socioeconomic burden created by the influx of African mi-

grants is unsustainable. I beg to differ. As a country of racial, cultural, linguistic, economic, and many other forms of diversity and division, South Africa faces a complex task in building a unified society. My question to this misconception is only one - if we believe that these black foreigners are here to take everything from us ,what are we doing for ourselves? Are we doing something to empower ourselves without pointing fingers? Are we competent enough? I think not. Lerato...

SEBOKENG. - A week after reports that the suspension of PAC president Letlapa Mphahlele had not been legal, a statement has been issued by the PAC Ward 17 chairperson. It says that PAC national spokesperson Apa Pooe and PAC Emfuleni Local Municipal public representative Councillor (PR) Abel Radebe have been suspended by the party’s National Executive Committee. According to Ndade Mxunya, both Pooe and Radebe were not elected by the branches to represent them - but they represent their own interests. Mxunya says that both members belong to a ‘troika’ that regards itself as the owner of the PAC in this region. “ If you track this cabal you will see that they have led the party in this region since 1998 and have manipulated the process toward their own personal gain. They have failed to submit a 2011 election report to the NEC and have also fail to hold a Conference,” Mxunya said, adding that, according to the party, Mphahlele remains suspended. Mxunya ends by saying that PAC Sedibeng will hold a regional Indaba on Sunday at the Botebo Tsebo Secondary School where all issues will be ironed out. Pooe say that Mxunya is just bitter that they are supporting Mphahlele all the way. “ If you can remember this guy has been coming to you with all this kind of stories and I want to tell you that there is no truth in what he is saying. We remain loyal members of PAC.”

Kopanong celebrates Nurses Month Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - “You have the ability to strike the balance, especially in the professional nursing field,” said Reverend Gift Moerane, secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC). Moerane was addressing nurses during the recent celebration of Nurses Month at Kopanong Hospital. He added that it’s time to move forward and stop maintaining the old order except for the values that remain. This year ‘s international theme was ‘Closing the gap’- millenium development goals 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1’ with the sub-theme: ‘Your health is in our hands’. In her keynote address, retired professional nurse Joyce Mokhesi encouraged nurses to give and show charismatic love to patients. “This is a loving, caring profession to look after sick people,” she said, telling vulnerable sick patients that he or she will

very soon be healed. “Make sure a patient trusts nurses. When a person is ill, he or she become vulnerable, desperate, looking for any source of help. Patients have total trust in both nurses and doctors. Mokhesi said a doctor depends on the information received from a nurse to give patients suitable medication.” Professional nursing allows workers to always show a smile when rendering services. Mokhesi said the nurse’s appearance interms of attire should speak for itself. Nurse Sylvia Mhlahlo of NEHAWU said they are proud to celebrate the nursing profession with passion for the community. “We care most about the community,” she concludes. Two horse race

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - It seems like a two-horse race between Sebokeng Ajax and VUT FC. These two log-leaders are sitting comfortably at the top of Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League in Stream A. The Students (VUT FC) is well known in local soccer circles to be at the top the log, standing with 28 points from 10 outings while Jax are second on the log with 25 points from the same number of games with Ajax. Nale Academy, otherwise known as “Ama Cheese Boys”, is third on the log with 25 points from 11 games. VUT FC and Sebokeng Ajax look like red-hot favourites to win the league, although it is too early to predict. The latter extended their lead to the top of the log when they beat their opponents over the weekend. The Students beat their arch-rivals Vaal Milano 3-1 at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday while Ajax hammered Vaal Stars 4-2 at Shakespeare Stadium on Sunday. The worst defeat of the weekend was when “Ama Cheese Boys” beat newcomers Bedworth Park Academy 11-0 in another one-sided Promotion League match played at Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. This was after Nale Academy beat Mighty Eagles 3-0 in another game played at

the same venue. In another fixture, Liverpool played to a disappointing draw with newcomers Sedibeng Blue Jays FC at Boipatong Stadium on Saturday while The Birds also played to 1-all draw with Young Stars. Vereeniging Old Boys and Vaal Manchester also shared the spoils when these two sides played to a 0-0 draw at George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. It was a weekend of draws with Vaal Development Academy narrowly escaping defeat by scoring a late equaliser against bottom-of-thelog MBC FC at George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. Weekend fixtures Stream B Friday Roshnee FC vs Sebokeng Academy (Roshnee, 17:00) Saturday Roots Mighty Boys vs Moropodi (Zone 15, 11:00) Mighty Killers vs Vintage (Zone 3, 13:00) Sunday Tokyo vs West FC (Zone 15, 11:00) Celta Vigo vs EYA (Zone 3, 11:00) Dream Team vs City Stars (Sports Centre, 11:00) Junior Lions vs West Ham vs (Zone 3, 13:00) Reki Manyora vs Zone 10 United (Sports Centre, 13:00).

Let’s get going Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - All the junior soccer teams in this region are urged to come forward and present themselves to affiliate in the Safa u/13 and u/15 league set to kick off next weekend. This special plea was made to Sedibeng Ster Sport by league coordinator Philip “Mngoshi” Ndlovu. Ndlovu says they want to reach all teams to be part of this historical junior soccer league launched by Safa last month. To make it interesting, Ndlovu says he had a meeting with the Sebokeng junior soccer teams and the response was overwhelming, to say the least. “I was

very touched by the commitment the clubs showed during the meeting. Everyone was looking forward to the kick-off of this league, and they believe that it was long overdue. I’m very excited because some of the teams have already paid their affiliation fee to confirm their participation in this league,” says a jubilant Ndlovu. To date, Ndlovu has played an important role for Emfuleni Promotion League to start in this region. In fact, the man has worked tirelessly to ensure that the league, particularly the Promotion League, starts soon.
