Scary creature found at the gate Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE.- Vuka Section residents were woken by ear-splitting screams when a family made a gruesome discovery at their home on Tuesday morning. Sesi Tsholo, the wife of Teboho Tsholo, had to receive treatment for shock when she found an unknown animal at her gate. The traumatised family made the discovery of the animal which residents believe to be a calf, a foal (young donkey) or a piglet. The unknown creature was missing its front legs, leading community members

to believe that some form of witchcraft was taking place. Sesi was taking rubbish out of her yard when she made the discovery. She immediately screamed for help and bewildered neighbours came to her rescue. Her husband was also drawn out by the commotion. He believes that the situation should be treated in a calm manner but that if there are sinister forces involved they will be fought with fire. “If this thing has been sent to us we are sending it back to the sender by fire,” said Teboho Tsholo adding that he does not believe in witchcraft even though he knows that it does exist. The family and the neighbours then burned the unidentified beast.

Bloated corpse interrupts church Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING.- Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members had to cut their service short on Sunday morning when a bloated corpse floated up the Vaal River. The incident happened near the Riviera on Vaal Hotel in Vereeniging. It is alleged that the church service was under way when the incident happened. The puffed-up woman came abruptly into view in the water near them and they ran for their lives. Police and paramedics were deployed to the scene but could only confirm that the woman was deceased. Preliminary investigations by Police

indicate that the woman might have committed suicide or that she might have been pushed from the nearby FW De Klerk Bridge. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says the woman’s dead body showed no sign of violent contact. “An inquest has been opened. We still urge the public not to use bridge at night, especially not alone,” concludes Funda. The swollen corpse of a woman popped into view in the Vaal River near the Rive ria Hotel on Sunday morning, interrup ting a service of the Zion Christian Church. Church members scattered in panic.

devastates school

BOPHELONG. - Parents, learners and educators at the Tsolo Secondary School are still reeling in tearful shock. They were traumatised after a Grade 12 learner from their school was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head. Nthabiseng Hlalele (18) was spotted by a community member, lying in a field not far from Emfuleni Primary School in Extension 17 on Heritage Day. The community last saw her in the company of a male classmate. It remains suspicious that she was carrying a firearm wrapped in a night dress. Learners suspect that Hlalele committed suicide with her father’s firearm. She was seen chatting and laughing with her friend on the streets at around 20:30. A gunshot was heard but nobody went out

to investigate. The people say there was not much reason to look out as gunshots are so common in that area that people are generally afraid of stray bullets. Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said Police are investigating a formal inquest following the incident. The inquest will try to establish why a 9mm firearm that belonged to the deceased’s father was in her possession. This will form part of the investigation. Police will probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. The current owner of the gun was taken into custody by Police for questioning. “This is a sad time for the school and the family,” said Lefa Mohapi, the school principal, adding that Hlalele was bright, disciplined, very quiet and never revealed that she had any problems. The late Hlalele will be buried over the weekend.

Public warned about crime VEREENIGING. - Business owners and the public in general are warned by the SAPS to be vigilant as the number of crimes reported lately has escalated significantly. Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says, “We would like to make business owners and the public in general aware of crimes such as vehicle scams, card cloning and stealing of valuables.” Business owners should handle orders made via fax and internet with care. Funda states that before loans or clothing accounts are approved, companies must first contact the telephone numbers supplied. “Check the credentials with the bank and ensure the verification of ID books and other documents provided. This kind of fraud is

starting to escalate. Stolen IDs are used and photos of the real owners are removed and replaced by the suspect’s photo.” Funda adds that in this instance where a suspect has taken over a person’s identity, a lot of purchases will be made in a short space of time. “Avoid any sale on the internet as most deals that are made on the internet end up being scams. Know that banks do not change banking details by e-mail, but only by personal visits and requests to the bank. This is a crime that is escalating,” Funda concludes, urging people and business owners to be vigilant at all times.

Two die outside Vaal Beach Party Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. – Police are investigating two horrific murders that took place during the fifth annual beach party at Dickinson Park on Saturday. These two cases were reported to police - that two young people were murdered at different times. However, Police indicate that these incidents were alleged to have occurred outside the area of the Beach Party. “Both these incidents happened outside the Dickinson Park premises. “Both cases happened at different times and the causes of the incidents are still unknown,” says Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda. It is alleged that two groups of young people from Alexandra were travelling in two separate taxis. A dispute erupted. Two young men in their late 20s star-

ted swearing fiercely at one another because of a girl. Funda says one of the boys broke a bottle and stabbed the other. “The victim died at Alexandra Clinic. Police managed to track down the suspect and he was arrested on Sunday,” Funda says, adding that the second murder also happened outside the premises. Apparently, two groups of young people were in a fashion contest (izikhothani). A fight occurred and one boy was beaten up with a golf club. He died on arrival at the Kopanong Hospital. Two other suspects fled the scene and the victim’s group was left with a corpse on its hands. No arrests have been made in connection with the second murder. Both suspects and the deceased are believed to be from Soweto.

Taxi driver rapes dog all night long

Lazarus Dithagiso

DE DEUR. - A taxi driver allegedly locked himself in a room and ‘entertained’ a female dog for the whole night. Police spokesperson Captain Thivhula Tshilate reported that the 38-year-old owner of the bitch subsequently searched for her so he could feed her. This was at Lakeside Estate on Saturday at about 19:00. He looked everywhere but could not find her. Earlier that morning, an informant saw the dog walking slowly, clearly unwell, with her tongue lolling. The hapless dog was coming out of a neighbour’s room. The informant alerted the dog-owner, who rushed to the house of the suspect. The owner said he suspected that his dog might have been poisoned. He went to investigate what his dog had been

eating in that room. Instead, he came across used condoms in the room. “I confronted the man ,” he said to police. The suspect failed to explain why he had kept the dog in his room for the whole night. He could not explain what the condoms had been used for. The complainant said the man kept apologising for keeping the dog on his premises for the whole night. He further apologised for what he had done to the animal. “Police arrived and a 29-year-old suspect, who is a taxi driver, was arrested for having sexual intercourse with a female dog,” said Captain Tshilate. He briefly appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court. The case was remanded for further investigation. It is not clear whether the owner took the dog to an animal clinic for examination.

While this crowd carried on jubilantly enjoying the Vaal Beach Party, two young men were reportedly killed outside the premises on Saturday night. Photo: Vaal Beach Party web.

Father impregnates step-daughter Lazarus Dithagiso

POLOKONG. - It is possible that a Polokong teenage girl (17) was impregnated by her mother’s boyfriend. Police arrested a 54-year-old man and charged him with rape on September 23. The suspect was denied bail pending further investigation. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu said the incident apparently happened after the mother left for work. Police are waiting for the pregnancy test report. The suspect lived in Zone 12, Sebokeng and apparently knew his girlfriend was not home. He arrived in the morning as the victim was about to go to school and told her to wait a few minutes.

The suspect closed the door and started to fondle the victim. He then took her to the bedroom where he allegedly raped her. After the ordeal, he promised her sweets and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. When the mother came home, the victim started crying. She told her mother what had happened and they then reported the matter to the police. The mother’s boyfriend was arrested, confirmed Warrant Officer Mthimkulu. He appeared in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. The suspect, who cannot be named as he has not lodged a plea, was denied bail pending further investigation and arranging legal aid.

‘Struggle’ now economic - Makhura

Moleboheng Chaha

BOIPATONG. - It was an emotional Heritage Day for the survivors and families of the victims of the Boipatong Massacre. The group formed part of the Gauteng’s provincial Heritage Day celebrations held at the Boipatong Stadium. Gauteng Premier David Makhura pledged to stir Boipatong up for economic prosperity. Makhura was addressing thousands of people who came in celebration of the day. The event was aimed at celebrating Heritage Day and commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the people killed in the 1992 Boipatong Massacre. Makhura said the Boipatong memorial was an important reminder of the sacrifices made in order to lead the nation into being a democratic country. “We will help reclaim the history of our people,” he said. Makhura used the heritage celebration to convey his public apology for the delay in the opening of the Boipatong Memorial Site. He went on to promise the community of Boipatong to come back next year to open the memorial site. The reason for the delay is some of the issues that residents have raised such as the non-pay-

ment of some contractors, and outstanding projects identified to create much needed jobs for local youth who acquired skills dur ing the building of the memorial. Makhura said the struggle continued, with the focus now on the need to change economic inequalities: “It is a struggle for greater changes to transform this country and the province we live in. It is now the struggle against poverty, unemployment and inequalities. It is a struggle to continue to change the lives of the millions of our people in the townships, whether formal or informal. “We must now work together to help the families of survivors and those who died,” he concluded. * The cultural programme included performances by local and national artists.

The Boipatong Memorial remains closed following complaints from residents. Premier David Makhura promised people that the issues would be resolved and the memorial will be opened next year. A better future - Maths, Science and Technology

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - ‘Science is a practical subject. Think and do it practically. Never assume what your mind tells you is right.’ Aimed at improving Mathematics and Science performance, to stimulate interest and curiosity, provide information, knowledge and skills-training to educators, learners and school-leavers, ArcellorMittal Sebokeng Science Centre provides fully equipped science laboratories and exhibitions. The centre enhances thinking skills, and

curriculum-linked Science and Mathematics instruction. It was established in 2005 after many children or members of the community struggled to access information in Science. Grade 10-12s studying Maths, Science and English are selected by the Department of Education. The centre exposes the students to Science and Technology in a fun and relaxed environment. Classes start from Grade R, Early Childhood Development (ECD) and up to a high standard for Maths, Science and English as

subjects. This was reported by Thami Mphokelo, centre manager and teacher by profession. He adds that learners are transported from various schools to attend classes. Michelle Bartkunsky from Aprio Communication Company said the aim was to tour the media through the centre. The media was taken to various classes to interact with the learners. To meet with the educators or lecturers of the Enterprise Development Centre for Computer Literacy, Bikane Mathebula and Mphokelo said that, since ArcellorMittal assists with classes on Science

and other subjects, there has been an improvement in learners passing with exciting results. The overall result in the Sedibeng district were 63,7% in 2012 and 82% last year. This year’s target is 87%. Mittal’s contribution has been approved by the Department of Education in the District. Some of the learners Sedibeng Ster engaged with said that - since their involvement with the Mittal Science Centre - there has been a light at the end of the tunnel. “We can now see, understand and enjoy the subjects.”

Administrators honoured for their support Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Fezile Dabi District Schools honoured their school administrators on Friday. They honoured them for their vital part in the structure that supports the educational system. The occasion was held at Ingwe Lodge. There were about 88 administrators (secretaries) from around Fezile Dabi District and 12 school headmasters. Mahalieo Tlou, an organiser and school principal from Theha Setjhaba, said they wanted to recognise the administrative support the education system gets from their individual administrators.

“Secretaries play a major role in our education structure. They need to be celebrated,” says Tlou. The guest speaker was once a domestic worker and school cleaner. Now she is a qualified professional teacher. Jermaine Tau, a matric teacher at Denesyville, uplifted the spirits of all the administrators by saying that anything is possible through God. She said nothing beats determination and willingness. “I wanted to be successful and nothing could get in the way of my destiny. I swallowed my pride and allowed myself to be taught. That is why I’m where I am today,” said Tau, as she told her story to those in attendance.

Clinic embraces culture

Culture and heritage were embraced by the staff of Johan Heyns Clinic in Vanderbijlpark on Friday. Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Renowned health institution director Salamina Hlahane says it was very important that the Health Department make headlines for good things. Johan Heyns Clinic celebrated Heritage

Day on Friday with the staff united for a good cause. The event involved all workers - from the cleaning department to security guards. “We are individual people who are groomed by culture and roots. We are African. We understand the significance of tradition

and culture. The spirit of Ubuntu (humanity), the spirit of love and caring - that is why we are health workers in different forms,” said Hlahane during the Heritage celebrations. To sum up the event, all male staff and guests were treated like kings and served

with dignity and honour. Traditional beer played a vital role to serve the kings, while female staff were the queens of cuisine. They were dressed in attire from indigenous cultures.

SEBOKENG. - Crystal Combined School in Polokong had a nature day on Friday when grades 11 and 12 planted trees to support the war against global warming. The day was conducted by teachers and learners. They planted trees to spread understanding about what it means to go green, emphasising the importance of a green world. Sedibeng Ster managed to clinch an interview with the headmaster, Smith Ramokhoase, who elaborated on the significance of going green as a school. He added that the global warming signs are real and needed to be recognised by the nation and even the world. “As a school we started the campaign with learners who understand the essence of global warming and how it is important for the school or nation to plant trees,” says Ramokhoase. Learners say it does not have to be Arbor Day for the nation to respond to a crisis of nature. “Trees produce the most important part of life. We live through and out of trees,” said the learners. Ramokhoase said that, “In five to 10 years, when these learners have long gone from this school, these trees will represent them and many lives will be saved through these trees.”

SEBOKENG. – Students were taken back to their roots at Moshate Secondary School on Friday as they celebrated Heritage Day. The atmosphere was thrilling and joyous as culture was celebrated in different forms. Teachers and management were fully dressed in their traditional wear, unveiling their African roots. The day commenced with the African way of cooking as parents and staff were part of this special day. School Principal Dorcas Mokhema made the opening remarks and told learners why they have to know and redeem their roots: “It is very important to know where we come from as the African nation and as the African child. You represent a large number of people before you, your family and your region. Show respect to elders which is the first priority of an African child,” said Mokhema. The programme was directed by the deputy principal, Oupa Tau who bestowed to all cultures its own unique song. Learners had plenty of fun and enjoyed every moment of the event, from singing and dancing to representing their culture. The Tswana tribe dancers stole the show at Mos hate Secondary School on Friday during the ce lebration of Heritage Day.

Stop feeding us this ‘bull....’

Shooting From The Hip still doesn’t understand the idea behind the Multi-Choice Diski Challenge even though some people tried very hard to make me believe it is a good initiative. Good initiative my foot! As far as I know, anything to do with development is Safa’s responsibility but in this case Safa is not involved. How is this possible? These PSL academies play two leagues: First it is the Safa Academies League and then this Diski Challenge. Even they say it is not a league, but the format is still the same as a league. Not all of us are stupid enough to

SA Netball opens Trust Fund for injured Vaal player Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that one of the Gauteng Vaal Netball Team players is still in hospital in Cape Town. This was confirmed by Gauteng Vaal Netball Team President Dudu Msane. Monosi Konopi was one of the Gauteng Vaal Netball team players and officials who were involved in a horrific accident on the way to the SA Netball Championship in Cape Town last month. According to the report she was the only one left behind as her condition was critical. Sedibeng Ster Sport has also learned that South African Netball has opened a trust fund for Konopi. When asked about the Trust Fund, Mosane says she is not in a position to comment on this, referring Sedibeng Ster Sport to the Konopi family. However, the number that Msane gave to Sedibeng Ster Sport was on voicemail at the time of going to press. Sedibeng Ster News Editor Lerato Serero wishes Konopi a speedy recovery. He says the newspaper is behind the family and hopes for Monosi’s speedy recovery. For the past few years Sedibeng Ster Sport, formerly Vaal Weekly, ran articles about the Gauteng Vaal Netball Team, asking for sponsorships every time they participated in the SA Netball Championship. Many believe that this unfortunate accident could have been avoided if the team were sponsored with plane tickets rather than having to drive such a long distance to compete.

believe everything those at PSL headquarters tell us. A lot remains to be explained as far as this Diski Challenge is concerned. One doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that there is bad blood between Safa and the PSL. One has only to consider the fact that Safa is not included in this deal. Shooting From The Hip normally doesn’t care what other people think, but something is not right here. To make matters worse some of these PSL teams didn’t have proper development structures until the launch of the league; yes, teams like Moroka Swallows. How can you explain this, a PSL development team losing 8-0? Again, the quality of football played by these development teams leaves much to be desired. I expect PSL development teams like Mamelodi Sundowns to play the same brand of football played by their

senior teams. But what we see is - ‘skop and jaag’ week in and week out. At their age Shooting From The Hip expected more flair, because results are not the priority, because the league is part of development to prepare these boys for a bigger stage, including Bafana Bafana. Can we really sit in front of our TV sets to watch this ‘bull...t’ every week? Another concern is the question - what are over-aged players doing in the field of play? To be honest, the boys don’t need them because they can play on their own. They don’t need baby-sitting in the field of play. To make matters worse, those over-aged players are given too many responsibilities in the field of play instead of letting the youngsters learn on their own. For example, instead of giving Josta Dladla a penalty I would rather give it to a youngster. This is the only

country that doesn’t believe in youngsters, based on what transpires at this Diski Challenge. Who doesn’t know that Dladla has scored plenty of penalties in his time and that he can still do so at his age? Shooting From The Hip wants to see youngsters given more responsibility in the field of play. We must stop this thing of ‘lack of experience’ in our football. The only way these youngsters can gain experience is to give them responsibilities and the only thing we can do is guide them. South Africa and its football won’t grow because we are too scared to fail. In case you are not aware -failure is the opportunity to start over again, but this time avoiding the same mistakes. This is what Shooting From The Hip understands about development.

Golden Arrows to shoot at Cosmos

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Jomo Cosmos registered their first win of the league against African Warriors away from home over the weekend. Now it hosts Golden Arrows in the National First Division match to take place at

VUT’s Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday. The game kick-off is 19:30. Ezenkosi registered their first victory of the season when they beat African Warriors FC 3 - 0 at Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday. Cosmos boss Jomo Sono believes that the win came at the right time and will boost

the confidence of the players ahead of their clash with Arrows. This Durban-based side was relegated from top flight football after finishing at the bottom of the Absa Premier League’s log at the end of last season. This battle of two former Absa Premier League teams will be dominated by their main objective - to retain their PSL status. Golden Arrows is a household name in South African football, playing some exciting football before the departure of their long-serving coach Manqoba Mnqithi, who is now with Mamelodi Sundowns. Sono will be up against his student Shaun Battlet, whom he once coached at Bafana Bafana. It is going to be an interesting battle come Saturday afternoon. Both coaches believe their teams will clinch Absa Premier League status at the end of the season. Sono, who always maintained that his side will turn the tables, has every reason to look forward to this encounter. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after their victory against African Warriors FC, Sono said it was about time his side started collecting points. Sono says he always knew it was just a matter of time before his side started winning games. “I always had confidence in these boys and this weekend was one of those days where we did everything right. We worked hard at training to rectify some mistakes and there was evidence that we really managed to sort them out. “We looked much better as a team and we will take this performance to this weekend match against Arrows. But it is not going to be an easy game,” says Sono.

Local boy meets Sundowns star Teko Modise Zacharia Nale

Monyane Mpandla (14) had the opportunity to interview Mamelodi Sundowns midfiel der Teko Modisei n Vanderbijlpark on Monday on how he managed to achieve his dream of becoming a professional soccer player. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A local boy was overwhelmed when he was allowed to spend time with Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise. He met the star at the Vanderbijlpark McDonalds on Monday. Monyane Given Mpandla (14) was Modise’s guest player for being the McDonalds U/14 Cup’s Top Goal Scorer. This Esokwazi Secondary School Grade 7 student recently scored six goals during the McDonald’s Provincial U/14 Cup at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex. This prolific striker had the opportunity to interview his role model - Teko Modise about his success. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that he was honoured to meet his role model and believes this serves as motivation for his soccer career. “I’m very fortunate because not many people have this opportunity. I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life and my dream is to play professional football. I would like to thank my coaches and fellow players because, if it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I could have achieved this,” says the shy but talented

Mpandla. Modise, who has been a McDonalds ambassador since 2009, says development must be a top priority in South African football. He believes that youngsters must play and train in proper conditions. He says he was shocked to see the condition of the pitch where the McDonalds Provincial Tournament was held in this region last month. Modise says the top priority of development football is mocked by the kind of facilities these boys play at. “I was in Vaal last month watching these youngsters but I was very disappointed with the state of the fields. The tournament should have been staged somewhere else, because the condition of the field was not at the level of the tournament. But I was impressed with the talent displayed that day,” says Modise. Asked if he still dreams of returning to Bafana Bafana, he said, “Look, it is every player’s wish to play for Bafana Bafana, but if you call Teko Modise for the national team, it is no longer development.”

Mohloli in Ball Games Championships Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - The Mohloli Secondary School u/15 and the u/17 ladies soccer teams will represent Sedibeng in the National Ball Games Championships. These are scheduled to take place in Pretoria from December 9 - 16. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the school’s sports coordinator Sello ‘Meneer’ Tshabalala. This Sharpeville-based secondary school is a school in this region that always does exceptionally well when it comes to sport, particularly football. The school will vie against ‘the-bestof-the-best’ in nine provinces. Tshabalala is confident that his school will make Sedibeng proud. Mohloli achieved this feat after being crowned for Provincial Ball Games in both categories – u/15 and u/17 ladies soccer in Pretoria last month. Tshabalala says his school will continue to make Sedibeng proud by represen-

ting the region with pride and dignity. However, an excited Tshabalala was quick to point out that they are not there to represent Mohloli but the entire Sedibeng community: “We are very blessed to have such talented learners in our school who always make this region proud. If you look at every year, we qualify for major tournaments and we go as far as provincial or national levels. “I have no doubt that we will hoist the Sedibeng flag high come December.” Tshabalala says they have already started preparing for the championships and he is pleased with the progress. Tshabalala says it would be a great achievement for both teams to bring honour home. He adds, “We want to make history by bringing both championships home and this is possible because these boys and girls have been training very hard.”

Women’s Regional League Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Vaal Milano Ladies FC is still at the top of the Sedibeng Women’s Regional League log. This Sharpeville-based outfit has lost just one game since the season started and is destined for the league championship if their current performance is anything to go by. However, hot on their heels is Elmagreen Ladies FC with 30 points from 14 games. Unlike Vaal Milano, Elmagreen Ladies FC has lost a total of three games and played one draw. Milano Ladies FC were on fire when they beat Solly Ladies 13-0 in a one-sided Safa Se-

dibeng Regional Women’s League over the weekend. This game took place at the Zone 7 Stadium and they set the tone straight – challenging the league for honour. In another Safa Sedibeng Women’s Regional League Young Milano Ladies FC hammered Young Girls Ladies FC 5-3, while Evaton Ladies FC suffered a 1 - 0 defeat at the hands of NWU Vaal Ladies FC.VUT Ladies FC walloped Going Up Ladies FC 9-0 in another one-sided Safa Sedibeng Women’s Regional League match played over the weekend.
