ELM billing system creates fury An allegedly deficient billing system used by the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) saw hundreds of Vanderbijlpark community members and residents from part of CW4 at the Frikkie Meyer Boulevard and Delfos Boulevard robots barri cading the road with burning tyres, rocks and trees. The community members said they need Emfuleni Local Municipality mayor Gretha Hlongwane to ad dress their problems. Hlongwane earlier this year said ‘No’ to a flatrate pay ment system of rates and taxes which the community demands. She said every one must pay for what they consume. Police officers looked on helplessly for more than four hours on Sunday as the community members chased vehi cles away, forcing motorists to take alternative routes. Some drivers who tried to ignore the protest were attacked with stones. No injuries or arrests were reported. More service delivery news on Page 4. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

Manala does not want ‘Slaap Tigers’ Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vanderbijlpark Station commander Brigadier Sam Manala has urged his female officers to pull up their socks and start collecting awards for good work performance. He told Sedibeng Ster that as good as males are able to bring success with arrests and perpetrators sentenced to over 10 years in prison, the female officers are able to even go beyond 15. Warrant Officer Charles Seko and Warrant Officer Francois Alberts were awarded by Manala and Colonel Corne van Schalkwyk, head of Detectives, for Appreciation for Good Work on August 25. Alberts was awarded for work of a meritorious nature by convicting an accused who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Seko was awarded for getting an accused sentenced to 12 years in prison for murder. Manala said

when he took over the Vanderbijlpark Police Station he made it clear that he didn’t want to work with ‘Slaap Tigers’ (sleepy people) in the station, adding that he has an open door policy but he would appreciate seeing the number of convictions increase. This could only happen through dedication and proper investigation of crime. “I stick to what I said before,” he said, “I want to see more female officers with good performances receiving appreciation certificates. It isn’t right every time to see males leading the pack, doing operation ‘vat alles’,” said Manala. Suicide caused by school bullies Moleboheng Chaha

BOPHELONG. - 15-year-old Lerato Molefe who was a Grade 9 student at Prestigious Aureate High School was laid to rest over the weekend after drinking rat poison at his home. Molefe is said to have committed suicide after months of living hell. He was allegedly bullied at school for months before he finally decided to take his life. His mother Paulina Molefe (36) says she got the shock of her life when she discovered that her son had taken poison on the morning of Tuesday, August 19. “When I asked my son why he had done this to himself, he asked me if I saw a human being when I looked at him. My answer was ‘yes’, but Lerato told me that he did not feel like he was human because of the way his bullies treated him,” says a distraught Molefe. “He said he was beaten, strangled and once held over the edge of the school building by his bullies.

“I’ve worked very hard to support my family, especially since my husband died. I sell peanuts and sweets at the Vereeniging taxi rank so that my child can have transport and lunch money. Lerato walked to school just so he could have money to give his bullies. This does not sit well with me. “I want my sweet son’s name to come up on all the events of his bullies’ lives, when they graduate, write exams, pass or fail a test.

I want them to think that my son could have been doing the same had they not treated him the way they did,” says the distraught mother. Lerato’s classmate says, “I feel guilty because I could have done something to change the situation. Maybe I could have told Lerato’s mom, but he never wanted me to know where he lived. I remember there was a period when he was riding my brother’s bicycle to avoid walking to school. I will miss my sweet and intelligent friend.” Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane says, “The department would like to pass on condolences to the family for the tragic loss of a life. We are deeply saddened by the incident. “Currently cases of bullying are acted on. Immediately, parents are informed of an incident, perpetrators get suspended and go through a disciplinary process, and appropriate punishment is meted out based on the outcome of the disciplinary process. In this case the perpetrators are scheduled to attend a disciplinary hearing on a date to be determined by the school governing body.”

Injections for R 100 at Sebokeng hospital? Lerato Serero

SEBOKENG.- A family is reeling in pain following the death of a family member at the Sebokeng Hospital on August 13. They claim that negligence on the part of the hospital led to the death of their loved-one Irene Lebitsa. According to a family member, Motshewa Ntsase, Lebitsa died after she was given a wrong injection by nurses at the hospital. Ntsase says that Lebitsa had also told them of the awful treatment she and other patients had been receiving from the nurses, who ignored their pleas when they needed help, of wrong injections being administered to patients and of injections that were sold by nurses for as little as R100. “My sister suffered at that place and I want the community

to know that they have a right to stand up to these people. She would call and tell us how she was suffering in pain and yet the nurses would only give her Panado. We have heard horrible stories about that place and this needs to be told,” says Ntsase, adding that on the day of Lebitsa’s death the nurses only realised later that she was dead as they had not been paying attention to her, thinking she was just asleep. Upon Sedibeng Ster’s enquiry into the matter the Gauteng Department of Health issued the following statement. According to treatment administered by the

hospital, no wrong injection was given. Injections that are in the ward are monitored and no nurse would be able to sell them, therefore there is no sign or evidence of negligence. Due to doctor to patient confidentiality, the hospital cannot divulge further information into this matter. The family is free to approach the hospital if they need further clarity into the treatment administered as well as care that the patient received during her stay in the hospital. At the time of going to print the family was still deciding what action to take on the matter.

Double your child grant money ten times, this is the banner that was spotted in Eva ton. Photo: Supplied.

EVATON.- It seems that it is not enough that children are being used by young people for financial gain. A suspected scam, advertised in Evaton has sprung up claiming to double the child grant ten times. The suspected child grant scam came to the DA’s attention in Evaton after banners indicating that people can “Double their child grant 10 times” were spotted in and around the area. The DA’s Constituency Head for Evaton and member of the Gauteng Legislature Kingsol Chabalala says that the scam is incredibly concerning as it involves taking advantage of our most vulnerable citizens. “The DA will be reporting this suspected

scam to the Department of Social Development, as well as the local police authorities, for further investigation. We also urge the public to come forward with any further information linked to these or similar scams. It is unacceptable for individuals to attempt to cheat people out of money meant for the wellbeing of their children,” Chabalala says. Social grants provide a safety net for the poorest of the poor and it is shameful to attempt to gain from people’s dire circumstances. Sedibeng Ster’s attempts to reach those responsible for the advertisement on the numbers written on the banner proved futile as the phone rang unanswered.

Caregivers bring war to their superiors Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Irene Tsotetsi, NGO caregiver and leader, received something of a ‘baptism of fire’ during a confrontation over pay at the Johan Heyns Clinic on Monday. This took the form of a ‘hot klap’. The verbal fight escalated into something more hands-on and brought the clinic to a standstill as the protesters stormed in, baying for the blood of the payment supervisor who had apparently made their lives a living hell. These caregivers claim they have not been paid for more than nine months while others claim it was longer. “We are human and we love our jobs but we need to be treated like human beings and not like animals. We have reported the matter to clinic superiors and nothing has been

done,” says Nomfundo Nani. Protesters stood outside the Vanderbijlpark Police Station in support of a colleague who was lodging an assault charge. They say Vusi Matiwane, the payroll supervisor, should thank his ancestors that they can’t get even with him for disrespecting one of their own. “We are not fighting him. All we want is answers as to why some people are paid and others not,” they say. During the interview with Sedibeng Ster the caregivers said they care about the health of patients, which is why they ended up working for the department. The clinic sent the Sedibeng Ster from piller to post when asked about the situation. Johan Heyns Clinics’ caregivers laun ched a ‘war’ against their payroll mana ger. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.

Thetha FM transmission stolen: ELM blamed Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARMS.- Controversial local radio station Thetha FM has done it again as it went off air for two weeks apparently due to stolen transmission machines. News spread fast on social networks this week that the station was off air and its management were blaming Emfuleni Local Municipality officials for this. The station’s CEO Jimmy Dlamini is said to have also gone on air confirming this. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Dlamini says that their two transmission machines, each

worth R 750 000 were stolen, hence they could not go on air. He puts the blame on Emfuleni Local Municipality officials who, he says, are responsible for the theft after his station started broadcasting a service delivery programme which exposed ELM and had reached a climax recently. “They are the people who are trying to sabotage us and we are not going to stop delivering the truth to the people no matter what. These transmissions cost us money but they cannot be used anywhere by those who stole

them, this they should know,” says Dlamini. Sedibeng Ster spoke to the ELM head of communications Stanley Gaba who told the paper that he was listening to the station when Dlamini made the theft allegations. Gaba says these are serious allegations and Dlamini is being mischievous about the matter. When asked if any steps will be taken on the allegations, Gaba emphasised that this matter needs more intervention and it will be better when they meet in a court of law. Meanwhile the station is back on air.

The death of a young manwho was bullied at a Vanderbijlpark school school (Story on Page 3) should be condemned at all costs. One would have thought that in this day and age this is a thing of the past, what with children living in a democratic society. What most people do not realise howe-

A dangerous phenomenon ver is how big this problem is. Bullying is common even in our lives yet we believe it to be normal, everyday thing, when it is not. Every time it happens, we say ‘they will get over it’ and ‘it builds character and makes them strong’ when this is totally wrong. You too, reading this now have been bullied in some way without realising it. I mean you have been told how skinny you are, how fat you are or even how ugly you are. Telling someone they are stupid does not make you any wiser, telling them that they are unattractive doesn’t make you any more good loo-

king; you are not better than the rest of us. Realise that it takes one second to say these things but a lifetime for someone to get over them. We need to start standing up to those who believe they can walk all over us and do whatever they want to us. We are human beings after all, just like them. No matter if your religious beliefs are different, if your skin colour is different, if you are gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgendered you also need to be treated with the respect and dignity that all of us deserve. We are all different and that makes us uni-

que and special in our own way and that makes life exciting, doesn’t it? I so wish that the pupils who bullied the young man to death realise what they have done to have finally led him to his grave, to themselves and to the family of this poor boy and that they take this as a lesson and teach others that what they have done is pure barbarism and should never be allowed to continue in our schools. Pity for them as they will forever be haunted by what happened. Lerato...

Residents insist on adequate service delivery Moleboheng Chaha

SONLANDPARK.-Ward 45 residents were very disappointed when officials from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) including mayor Gretha Hlongwane failed to make an appearance at the public meeting held at Sonlandpark Primary School recently. Ward councilor Elize Aucamp had to take fire for the absent officials, having to explain to residents that she had attempted to raise their issues with the local municipality and received no correspondence. Residents claimed they were tax payers and therefore deserve better service delivery. Another issue discussed at the meeting was that of the high crime rate in SonlandPark. “We are tax and ratepayers. We need to know what is being done with our money,” they said. One other thing that bothers residents is the alleged ‘wrong’ billing system used by the municipality. “We as ratepayers feel that

a time frame of 14 days is sufficient enough to get a reply from the municipality and that visible changes can be made during this time frame.” residents add. Aucamp says, “As a result of the officials not coming, residents decided to sign a petition which will be handed over to the municipality.” Some of the issues highlighted in the petition are that all potholes be adequately fixed and gravel roads be regularly graded. ELM should give attention to ‘wrongly’ billed accounts handed out and people being handed over to the legal department. Above: Ward Councillor Elize Aucamp had to explain to residents how she had tried to raise their concerns with the local muni cipality and failed as she never received any correspondence.

Imbhokodo celebrated by NGOs Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Ntabankulu Primary School in Zone 12 held a closing ceremony for Women’s Month hosted by local leadership and two NGOs - Progressive Youth and Healing Hands, including the Zone 12 clinic. The event was capacitated by many local grannies and women (Izimbhokodo). According to organiser Pule Mohlamme it was a long and wonderful journey, and challenging. “We managed to get the relevant people and organisations to grace the event,” Mohlamme. Mphikeleli Magidela from Progressive Youth said. He said it was an honour for his NGO to partake in such an event, graced as it was by older people: “We are raised by the community. We are adults because of our grandmothers and mothers. However, by them we have learnt and seen life differently. I send my greatest love to them while I’m alive and thank them for being parents to us as young people,” Magidela concluded.

Sharpeville Six woman awarded house Molebohenng Chaha

SEBOKENG.- Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) mayor Gretha Hlongwane with Housing MMC Manana Khubeka handed over a house at Golden Gardens to Theresa Ramashola recently. This was a gesture for everyhting she had been through. The house is a gift from Bishop Wami Nhlapho and his company Gamont Housing. “Theresa is not just a special person, She is a very special person. Everything she has been through has brought us here today.” The mayor highlighted the fact that Mashamola had been one of the Sharpeville Six who survived death row: “You were the only woman amongst the

Sharpeville Six and that makes you extraordinary, especially as we close down Women’s Month.”. Nhlapho said, “This is an initiative we have taken as part of Social Responsibility. A person should not have to suffer in jail and continue to suffer after having fought for freedom. You deserve this house, the keys and the title deed. It is all yours.” Ramashaola could not hold back tears of joy as she thanked the officials and all the people who had contributed to making the hand-over possible: “I am really grateful. I will own a house of my own for the first time. I will be moving in as soon as tomorrow,” Mashamola concluded.

VEREENIGING.- Using technology in the classroom is important as it prepares learners for a global economy. This comes after two organisations, DMS Powders and Give it Back donated a brand new computer lab to the Eureka School on August 26. Learning should be exciting, interactive and collaborative and this computer lab will be to the advantage of the learners of Eureka School. The school will also get a chance to work with tablets at their lab and get a feeling for how it feels to learn while at the same time using all their senses. Jonothan Michael from Give it Back said: “I would like to thank DMS Powders, without you we would not exist. It is a privilege to be able to put a smile on these

children’s faces.” This new venture will bring a chance in the education curriculum. With this lab the teachers will be able to guide and support the children and at the same time they will learn while playing. “They will be exposed to technlogy which will enhance them and it will make a good change within the classrooms and among the learners,” Maya Botha, the circuit manager of the Gauteng Department of Education (D7) said. Learners from Eureka School entertained guests with some singing and dancing. “We would like to thank all the sponsors who made this new adventure for Eureka School possible as well as everyone that joined us on this special day,” Santie van Tonder of Eureka School said.

SHOOTI NG FROM THE HI P WI TH ZACHARI A NALE

The news reaching Shooting From The Hip is that Safa Sedibeng Regional Secretary Star Hlongwane has been suspended by the regional executive committee. The next question is - for what? But having said that, Shooting From The Hip is not surprised by this development. The suspension has nothing to do with football. It only eliminates strong opposition ahead of the regional elections. As Shooting From The Hip said in last week’s column - I will never sacrifice my reputati-

11

Their day will come! on to stand for the Safa Sedibeng Presidency or for Emfuleni Local Football Association chairmanship. Never! Hlongwane was suspended by his colleagues and friends because they claim he was now becoming a threat to them. As they say, ‘there is no smoke without fire’! It’s that time of year when local football people ‘position themselves for positions’ in the REC ahead of the elections. To make things interesting, Hlongwane was suspended by some of the very people he worked with to ensure that Danny Jordaan became the Safa President. What a U-turn! Shooting From Hip finds it very strange be-

cause at one stage these people were united in destroying other football people in this region. God has his way of doing things. Watch this space - our football is going to be run by ‘nyaope’ addicts and illiterates. Don’t be surprised when they say ‘Moketekete’ is Safa Sedibeng President even if he doesn’t know how to spell his own name. People have secret meetings to campaign for elections. Why must people campaign if they know what they are capable of? Like I said last week - football has become a tender ploy or a get-rich-quick ploy, with some people undermining the efforts of development coaches in this region. Shooting

From The Hip is aware that Hlongwane was suspended in absentia which means he has yet to receive the letter of suspension. Shooting From The Hip has also learned that he was never invited to a hearing of the Disciplinary Committee before he was suspended by REC. I thought I was in South Africa - only to find that some of us still do what Robert Mugabe does in his country- rule by iron fist. Lastly, to those who are in football for honest development – keep on working hard while those in power fight for positions. THEIR DAY WILL COME!

Local youngsters turn out in numbers for Coaching Clinics Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - An estimated 70 to 80 players, both girls and boys, attended coaching clinics at the Zone 7 Stadium over the weekend. These coaching clinics were organised by the South African Football Coaches Association of Sedibeng. These successful clinics were conducted by Mondli Nkosi and Lucky Mandla. They were for the u/13s, and were aimed mainly at the development of football in this

region. They focused on trapping, passing and controlling. Association communication officer Martin Mpholo says this is an ongoing process to discover as much talent as possible in this region. He says the coaching clinic is part of the South African Football Coaches bid to boost the development of football in this country, especially towards developing a national team. Mpholo believes it is everyone’s responsibility to help with the development of football in this country. Speaking with Sedibeng Ster Sport,

Mpholo revealed that they would embark on a roadshow in Sedibeng to conduct coaching clinics. He urged teams, clubs and academies to join hands in this project for the sake of the development of football in this region: “We invite all stakeholders to come on board and make this project a success. I have no doubt that we will achieve our objective. We also invited Emfuleni Local Football Association teams to support the initiative for the development of football in the Emfuleni area,” he concluded. These youngsters showcased their talent during the coaching clinics hosted by the South African Football Coaches Associ ation of Sedibeng at the Zone 7 Stadium over the weekend.

Regional PlayOffs Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Vereeniging Old Boys Football Club and Vantage Football Club will represent Emfuleni in the Regional Play-Offs for the SAB League promotion. The two achieved this after being crowned the winners in Stream A and B. These two teams from Roshnee and Sebokeng will battle it out with Lesedi and Midvaal for the spot in Safa Sedibeng’s Regional League for the new season. The two teams that finish first and second on the log standing at the end of the play-offs will be promoted to the Safa Sedibeng SAB League for the 2014/2015 soccer season. This was confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the Emfuleni Local Football Association interim committee chairman Philip Ndlovu.

Ndlovu says it’s official that the official winners of Promotion League stream A and B are Vereeniging Old Boys FC and Vintage FC. The date and venue for the much anticipated Regional Promotion PlayOffs will be announced before the end of this week, according to Ndlovu. However, Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that there was no Promotion League playing in Midvaal. As things stand, that means only two teams from the Emfuleni and Lesedi Local Football Association will participate in the Regional Play-Offs. “As far as I know there was no league games playing in Midvaal; hence Emfuleni had two teams to compete in the play-offs. But this is not a matter to discus now as our focus is on the play-offs,” says Ndlovu.

Sensei Maqabe ready for World Karate Tournament Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG.- Sensei Buti Maqabe, the Sebokeng-based karateka, will be among local karatekas to represent South Africa in the World Karate Tournament. The event is hosted by South Africa and is scheduled to take place in the Durban Hall from September 6 - 7. This Sebokeng-based karateka is full of confidence ahead of this event. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster

Sport ‘Sensei’ Maqabe says this will be the first time he will fight in the World Karate Tournament. He is following in the footsteps of Papi Mokoena, the first fighter from this region to participate in this tournament, which is one of the biggest events in the sporting world. Maqabe has been training very hard and there is no doubt that he will make not only Sedibeng proud but also South Africa. “I’m more than ready for the tournament because I have

been working very hard. “I’m not going to Durban on holiday but to work hard. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete against the best of the best in the world. I will always cherish this moment because not many can achieve this,” says the excited Sensei Maqabe. He appeals to the Sedibeng community to pray for him so that God can give him the strength to conquer the world.

The occasion was when Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards FC played to a 1 - 1 draw while taking part in the National First Division League match on Sunday. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that Cos-

mos will play a number of games in Sedibeng while still waiting for the Parys Stadium to be finalised. The game lived up to expectation with the visitors – Black Leopards - dominating the proceeding for the better of the first half. The game went to interval with Leopards FC leading 1 - 0; however, Cosmos came forward firing in the second half in search of an equaliser. The local soccer fans

were behind Cosmos, otherwise known as ‘Ezenkosi’. It was end-to-end stuff with both sides playing ‘attack’ football. Cosmos’s efforts were rewarded with less than five minute before the referee blew the final whistle. This was a second draw for Ezenkosi in their two opening league matches for the 20014/2015 soccer season. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the game, Jomo Cosmos coach/manager Jomo Sono was clearly pleased with his young team’s performance on the day. He believes that his team is getting better and better in each and every game, and he believes it is just a matter of time before they start winning. “I’m happy with our boys’ performance because Leopards is one of the most experienced teams in the league and playing to a draw against them was not a bad result at all. However, playing at home, everyone expected us to collect maximum points. “I have no doubt that the next game is must-win game, taking into consideration the chances we created, especially in the second half,” says Sono. Sono was humble enough to acknowledge the support of the Sedibeng people who packed the venue to capacity. Even though Cosmos will play their home games in Parys, Sono says he will bring some of the games to Sedibeng because of the relationship his team has with this region.

Course for local coaches Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - It’s back to the classroom for locals when Vaal Youth Football Development in conjunction with Coerver hosts a coaching course in Sasolburg. The course is from September 25 - 28 and from October 19 - 26. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by course organiser Tyrone Koller, who said that this forthcoming coach course is the building-up process for a possible centre to start in the Vaal. Koller claims Coerver is a Dutch-based coaching formula linked with 36 international countries. He says this is going to be a well-structured skills development school which will be linked to PSL and international clubs. “Top players will be developed from high-performance centres in Johannesburg and carefully placed in the clubs. The main directors of this company are Steve and Cayle Coetzee. Father and son share the same dynamic passion and are well known within the top levels of SA football,” says Koller. To date, Steve Coetzee is a qualified chief instructor for education of coaches and a former University of Pretoria (otherwise known as Tukkies) technical director. According to Koller, Coetzee will head the centre with son Cayle who has been involved as a player. For more information Tyrone Koller can be contacted on 072 1600 040.
