Sedibeng EFF members injured in Legislature Lazarus Dithagiso and Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLPARK. - There was red everywhere inside the Gauteng Legislature in Johannesburg last week. This was when members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) stormed in demanding to meet with Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe. Sedibeng EFF has three members in the Gauteng Legislature. This includes Patrick Sindane, Parks Khaiyane and Mcina Chwaku. The party’s comander-in-chief Julius Malema had led about 2 000 members to the Legislature to protest the removal of their MPLs during a July 1 sitting for wearing red overalls with “Asijiki, we will not retract ”, inscribed on the back. Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse defiant members. They blamed Mekgwe for blocking the access cards of EFF members to the Legislature. Local businessman and EFF member Sam Shabalala who was also there says that the ruling party has to change. Shabalala argues that the ruling party abuses its rights in what is supposed to be a democratic country. “The African National Congress (ANC) undermines the power of the angry nation. We live in a democratic nation, but we are prevented from practicing freedom. Police are used to do the dirty work of the ruling party,” says Shabalala. A number of local members were injured during the scuffle. Those injured blamed Police and Security personnel. Shimmy Mokgara of Polokong, an injured member who suffered injuries to his hands, head, below the belt and of the body, said this was just the beginning of the great fight to come. “We are now ready for war,” he said. It was reported that the EFF members ate
some of the food that had been prepared for the VIPs. It was also reported that acting Speaker Uhuru Moiloa said EFF members forced entry into the Legislature and embarked on illegal activities within the premises, includ-
ing looting food catered for the sitting, assaulting members of SA Police Service, throwing broken bottles at the Legislature building, and vandalising Legislature property in its effort to gain entrance to the House.
He said that despite the EFF’s violent actions, which posed a threat to the safety of the representatives of the people of Gauteng, MPLs and employees within the precinct, the house sitting had continued as planned.

Cruel owner castrates dog VEREENIGING. - While recently conducting post-home inspections, a concerned member of the public stopped at an SPCA Inspectorate and supplied them with an address in Boltonwold where a dog owner had allegedly castrated his dog. On their arrival the Inspectorate was shocked with their finding. Rufus’s owner thought that if he castrated his dog himself, he would prevent the dog from wandering. Rufus was in excruciating pain, the wound was infected and had a rotten smell coming from it. The SPCA Inspectorate convinced Rufus’s

VEREENIGING. – The end whistle blew for a brilliant and promising soccer player when police arrested him for six-plus cases of rape on Wednesday. It is alleged that the crimes he is accused of might not be the only ones on his tally. Evaton Police are stunned by the suspect’s alleged acts against many women in his path. Investigating officers Sergeant Penny Kwankwa and Warrant Officer Tsholonyane Matlaletsa were forced get their hands dirty and find the culprit as rape cases accumulated by the week. According to the police the suspect presented himself as a CFP patroller. He was always equiped with handcuffs and a police or CPF reflector jacket. “ He used the dump site between Evaton West and Palm Springs as his territory,” says Kwankwa. Police report that, every two days, the suspect perpetrated a rape. An investigating officer says, “The suspect wore a balaclava to cover his face. He used the underweasr of the victims to wipe himself before he burned them.” The suspect also took items like cell phones, jewellery and other accessories. Police say the suspect might have started these terrifying acts as early as December 2013. Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda says the suspect was arrested after the victims were able to identify him and pointed out where he lives.

owner to sign him over to them and was immediately rushed off to the SPCA. Rufus, a lovable dog with a fantastic nature even though he was in excruciating pain, allowed the Inspectorate to examine the damage caused by the owner’s ignorance. Rufus was taken to a private veterinarian for a thorough medical examination. As can be expected, the procedure on Rufus had not been done correctly, which caused unnecessary pain and suffering for him. A charge of animal cruelty will be opened in terms of the Animals Protection Act against Rufus’s owner. Rufus is a neutered male Boerboel X, approximately two years old and he is now searching for a loving family of his own ... a place he can call home. * Please contact the Vereeniging/Meyer ton office on (016) 422 1505 or info@spca ver.co.za during office hours for more infor mation about Rufus.
Female employee forced to urinate in a bucket Lazarus Dithagiso
MEYERTON. - A merchandiser intends to press charges against the South African Human Rights Commission after a security guard allegedly made her urinate in public in front of him at Shoprite in Meyerton. The woman’s name cannot be disclosed. The woman says she felt that the guard belittled, tarnished and violated her right to human dignity: “I was on duty when ‘nature called’, but the guard refused me permission to go to the toilet.” Instead, said the merchandiser, “ he organised a water bucket for me to use in his presence. I undressed. urinated, revealing my buttocks to onlookers. He did not want to allow me privacy. After the ordeal, I asked him to bring me tissues so I could wipe myself, but he refused until another female guard assisted me. About to leave, the security guard instructed me to take the bucket to the toilet. I reported the matter to the manager,” says the humiliated worker. The complainant heard the guard later saying that her urine did not smell as bad as he had thought it would. To add salt to her wound, he allegedly told her that she should not worry as she had a nice, attractive body. Apparently the guard was called to apologise to the victim. The ordeal was not taken well by some workers who took up the matter with the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu). David Mngemezulu, local deputy chairperson of the union, said they wrote a letter to management to raise concerns about the violation of a worker’s human rights. “The security company has dealt harshly with its employee,” said Mngomezulu. Sarita van Wyk of Shoprite says they regard this incident as very serious: “Shoprite has requested the security company whose service is contracted at the store to take disciplinary action against the employee involved,” says Van Wyk. She adds that action has already taken place as the guard had been removed from Meyerton Shoprite. “ Shoprite does not condone disrespectful treatment of any person working on its premises. We will take action as soon as reports are received,” she said.

NUMSA strike ends The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) said on Monday that its members had unanimously accepted a wage settlement offer in the metals and engineering sectors. This ends a four-week strike that has crippled some manufacturers. Some 220 000 Numsa members, who have been on strike since July 1, will begin to return to work on Tuesday, after agreeing to a three-year wage deal giving its lowest-paid members increases of up to 10%. Reports are that, at a briefing at the un-
ion’s headquarters in downtown Johannesburg on Monday, Numsa general-secretary Irvin Jim said the union had also agreed with employers on the “formulation” of a contentious peace clause within the agreement. The new formulation has satisfied union members that they will still be able to challenge employers over workplace disputes. Community demands flat rate for rates and taxes Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. -Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Gretha Hlongwane appeals to the community to stop burning the tyres, barricading roads and demolishing property. She insists that her office has an open-door policy to sort out the problems of those willing to pay for services and support the billing system adding that everyone is welcome to discuss how to settle the accounts. “The municipality has no idea about the ‘flat rate system’ touted by residents. The money collected from revenues is used to pay Eskom and Rand Water. The community should understand that the municipality needs money for maintenance. Dodging of payment makes matters worse as the accounts keep gathering interest,” she said. She warned that those who continue demolishing, burning, and vandalising roads will face the full might of the law. Speaking during a
media briefing recently Hlongwane said that for the past three weeks the community, especially in the Vanderbijlpark suburbs on the Westinghouse Boulevard and Frikkie Meyer Boulevard, barricaded the road with burning tyres and stones, wanting the municipality to totally cancel their billing system to zero. “This is impossible. People owe the municipality up to R400 000 and the next thing they demand is that those amounts be scratched. We have handed our debt book to MBD debt-collectors. That company is not going to charge the community interest. The municipality will pay MBD the interest out of its pocket.” During a meeting the residents of Vanderbijlpark and representatives from the municipality reached a deadlock on July 17 and the meeting was postponed for the third time. Residents demand a flat rate of R500 per househould. The municipality says it will never allow the flat
rate system. The community demanded a flat rate while the municipality repairs the waterand electricity-reading meters which they deem to be faulty. The ELM mayor’s office says, “Over the municipality’s dead body, There’s no way a flat rate will be put into place.” Meanwhile DA member of Gauteng Legislature Kingsol Chabalala says that the DA is becoming increasingly concerned over the lawless behaviour by protestors in Evaton and Beverley Hills who are extorting residents who use public roads. “ Mayor Nomadlozi Hlongwane must show leadership and restore law and order to troubled areas,” he ends. Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Gretha Hlongwane says that residents will pay, whether they like it or not. Photo: Laza rus Dithagiso.

Forward we go
Ne wsEdi t or now on, suggestions, complaints, criticism Comme nt s
I (together with many other’s I would like to think) am quite relieved that the National Union of Mine Workers strike is over. We would not have liked to see it end up like Marikana. The workers have mouths to feed, instalments to pay and lives to live. What annoys me is that the process of discussions took much longer than it was supposed to and now that all has been said and done there is talk of victimisation of the employees by the bosses on those who went on strike. It is the duty of the managers to make sure that from
and protests are taken into consideration. Victimisation would not be a good idea as this will only be like pouring petrol on to the already raging fire. If illegal action was embarked upon by the employees, however, the bosses are within their rights to take the action enshrined in their company policy. What gives me joy is that the workers are back at work and although at first, things will not go as smooth, eventually the situation will redeem itself. There should be total agreement that for the sake of our country’s economy things should go back to normal. Families affected by the strike, that had by now begun to think that they are going to be out in the cold with empty stomachs,
should breath easily without the worry of their breadwinner being victimised. This will go a long way to show that every problem has a solution at the end and that it is not only by force that an amicable solution can be reached and finally that that there is always what is called the round table where people can sit down and engage with each other. We cannot always rely on the government to solve our problems but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves: protect us from harm and provide every child with a decent education; keep our water clean; invest in new schools and new roads, and in Science and Technology. From there on, forward we go. Lerato…
Skills enhancement in Lakeside SEBOKENG.- One of the biggest and most exciting projects underway in Midvaal currently, is the construction of the Lakeside Library. While Lakeside’s children and teachers are eagerly awaiting the opening date to start borrowing books, the project has already had a significant impact on the lives of local residents involved in the construction of the library. Twenty two residents have received training in various fields, and were handed their certificates of completion by Midvaal’s Mayor at a ceremony held in their honour recently. According to Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi, the aim of such initiatives is to empower local people by providing training to as many people as possible, and equipping them with skills that can open up future job opportunities for them. He urged the trainees to use their new skills to go out and seek employment with private contractors, and more importantly, to create their own small businesses and
employ people, instead of depending on government to provide jobs. The participants received training in plumbing and water pipe
installation, occupational health and safety training, paving, brick-laying, storm-water, and electrical tasks.

In total, the home looks after 22 girls and 28 boys of various ages. “Keeping our commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment for our local communities, Emerald Resort & Casino has reached out a helping hand to Polokong Children’s Home,” says Ronel Swanepoel, IT and CSI manager at Emerald Resort & Casino. “It came to our attention that Polokong’s Children’s Home has been struggling to meet its toiletry needs. “ We therefore sprang into action by purchasing all the required toiletries and donating it to the home.” Each child received their own personal toiletry bag which included toothbrushes, facecloths, sponges, razors and deodorant. To top this off, bulk items that the entire home can use, like soap, shampoo, toothpaste and more personal items were also donated. “We enjoyed spending time with, and chatting to many of the kids,” says Ronel. “It makes it all so worthwhile seeing their smiles and knowing that we have assisted the community in some small way.” “It’s important, in any environment, for kids and especially older teenagers to know their self-worth and be able to build on it,” says Retha Jacobs, Project Manager at LUSA Community Chest. “These items will go a long way in assisting these five homes that form the Polokong Children’s Home and we thank Emerald Resort & Casino for making this possible.”

National Women’s Day SEDIBENG. - National Women’s Day is an annual public holiday in South Africa on August 9. It commemorates the national march of women on this day in 1956 to petition against the pass laws that required South Africans classed as “black” by The Population Registration Act. The ‘pass’ was an internal passport that severely restricted movement. Each “pass” designated specific urban/metropolitan areas in which the bearer was authorised to live, work and travel. Within such areas, black South Africans were required to carry and produce their “pass” at all times, and were arrested if they didn’t have one on them. As such, it served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour, during the apartheid era. On August 9 of 1956, more than 50 000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. They left bundles of petitions containing more than
100 000 signatures at prime minister JG Strijdom’s office doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. The women sang a protest song composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo!(Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: “You strike a woman, you strike a rock”) has come to represent women’s strength and courage in South Africa. The march was led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophie Williams. Other participants were Frances Baard, whose statue was unveiled by Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins in Kimberley (Frances Baard District Municipality) on National Women’s Day 2009. [1] Since August 9 of 1994, the day has been commemorated annually and is known as “Women’s Day” in South Africa. In 2006, a reenactment of the march was staged for its 50th anniversary, with many of the 1956 march veterans.

elearning centre launched in Midvaal Pinky Mofokeng
MEYERTON.- The cold couldn’t suppress the excitement among Midvaal’s library staff as they prepared for the official launch of the new Meyerton Library e-learning centre recently. Representatives from the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Emfuleni, Lesedi and Ekhuruleni Municipalities, the Midvaal Youth Development Forum, Early Learning Centres of Midvaal, Service Providers to the municipality as well as HOD’s and MMCs of Midvaal were present at the event. The centre aims to provide the community and Midvaal staff members with information literacy skills and access to ICT technologies. This facility is also useful to Midvaal staff members for training and development purposes. It will assist in bridging the digital divide between advantaged and the disadvantaged communities of the wider Midvaal area. At the launch event, Gauteng Director for Libraries & Archives, Ms Meyer, highlighted
the success of Midvaal libraries over the past 14 years, and commended the municipality for always achieving maximum output with the limited budget assigned to them from a province. Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi shared his own positive experiences of using Midvaal libraries when he was at school, and also stressed the importance of libraries as a support-structure for education and social systems within our communities. The centre is equipped with 20 workstations installed with the latest Windows software and Microsoft packages, as well as access to the internet. The built-in data projector together with state-of-the-art drop-down electric screen makes this centre the ideal place for training and development. Basic computer training and other programmes will be offered through the centre. The facility is already operational, and interested parties can contact the Meyerton Library for training schedules or more information regarding services on offer.

This was held in Mumbai, India on Friday 27 June 2014 at the 5 star Taj Lands End Hotel and Conference Centre. The theme of the awards was “Turning Challenges into Opportunities”. As Professor Moutlana took to the stage to receive her award and trophy, the Programme Director was delighted to note that Prof was clad in Indian attire. He complimented her on her choice of outfit that was so apt for the occasion. She swiftly responded to the body of World Vice Chancellors and went on to remind them of the relationship and friendship of our two great leaders, Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. She explained that South Africa is a highly diverse country and that we have great historical ties with India, and if we look back at our struggle, our history denotes the role that Ghandi played hand in hand with Nelson Mandela. The crowd burst in applause at Prof Moutlana’s response and continued to cheer her with warm wishes and congratulations throughout the evening proceedings.

V
aal University of Technology and Sasol Entrepreneurship Programme hosted the eco circle and soup day projects on Friday, 27 June 2014 in Sebokeng and Sharpeville. The aim of the events was to instil practical skills of theoretical aspects of projects which include planning, organizing and operations management to students as they are aspiring entrepreneurs. About 50 registered students in the programme participated in the events as their assignment requested that
they go back to their own communities and identify beneficiaries of their choice. On the day the participants, whom were supported by staff and volunteers, served soup at the chosen Old Age homes and cleaned-up the surrounding areas. The two projects do not only serve as initiatives to educate students on taking care and developing their communities but rather gives them the opportunity to interact with their potential target market.

Youth enjoys pit bull dog show Pinky Mofokeng
RUST-TER-VAAL. - A dog show was hosted in Rust-ter-Vaal recently to entertain the youth and keep them away from alcohol and the well known drug ‘nyaope’. Organiser David Olifant says, “We are totally against dog-fights and we will never promote dog-fights. “Instead, we demonstrate to the youth that these dogs should not be handled as fighting dogs and we show them how to look after the dog - the type of exercise they should do and how to train them in a personal capacity”. One of the demonstrations at the event
was ‘tagging’, which tested the dog’s strength, where a dog pulls on one side and a second dog pulls on the other. The youth came out in numbers to witness this event and were given the opportunity to touch the dogs and see that they are indeed not dangerous if handled with care. “The main reason for the Pit-bull Dog Show is to move away from the stigma that American Pit-bulls are dangerous,” concludes Olifant. RUSTTERVAALYouth organised a Pitbull Dog Show to entertain and educate people on how to handle them.

Women’s Soccer League needs serious attention : Tshabalala women’s football seriously, including our national team. How can one explain this? Banyana Banyana represented this region but noone knows. We played our league games as usual despite the fact that our woman’s national team was playing on the day. In the past our women’s national team was respected because of the sacrifice of individuals. Sedibeng Ster is our only hope of knowing what is going on with our women’s football,” says Tshabalala. Speaking about the game, Tshabalala believes that the score is not a true reflection of the game. He says his team created many opportunities but failed to convert those openings into goals. ‘The Students’ were without their playmaker and dazzling Banyana Banyana midfielder – Refilwe Jane. VEREENIGING.- When a young man’s hope started to fade away a local businessman came to the rescue. 22year-old Thato Molefe, a resident of Vereeniging and a former pupil at General Smuts High school thanks Chris Boshoff owner of Boshoff Computer Solution for his contribution towards his chess career, generously sponsoring him twice to represent Sedibeng at the South African Junior Chess Championships first in 2007 and 2009 in Cape Town. “Chess is my passion and the only sport I am good at but financially demanding too. Qualifying for the SAJCC was a dream come true but I knew my parents couldn’t afford it. I tried my best to raise funds washing cars and getting jobs there and there but the deadline for paying was fast approaching. I was about just ready to give up when Chris Boshoff came to my rescue and paid for me. That is an experience I will never forget and even now I’m still grateful. It was an experience which motivated me not to give up on any of my goals and dreams,” said Molefe.

SEDIBENG. - VUT Ladies Lebamang head coach ‘Mshengu’ Tshabalala is worried about the state of women’s football in this country. Tshabalala was speaking after his team’s victory (2 - 0) against NWU Vaal Ladies FC in the Sasol League at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday. Tshabalala says the standard of women’s football is declining in this country because the focus is on Bafana Bafana and other men’s national teams. For example, Tshabalala says they just play without an update as far as the log is concerned. “This is a shame for women’s football in this country because no one knows what is happening. We just go and honour fixtures but no one know who the team topping the log is in Gauteng stream. Safa doesn’t take

Will lightning strike twice on Shakes? Much has been said and written about the appointment of Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba as the new Bafana Bafana head coach to replace Gorden Igesund. The prophets of doom have already raised slurs about the appointment of Bra Shakes while others sing his praises. For starters, this is the very same man who at one stage fell out of Safa’s favour while still a coach for Bafana Bafana ten years ago. Safa terminated his contract with a handshake, but after three years he was re-hired as the u/20 national coach. The announcement of Shakes Mashaba as the Bafana Bafana coach came as a shock to many because there
were claims that Safa would appoint a foreign joyed this success with Bafana Bafana as there coach. The Safa President ‘scooped’ journa- was a lot of interference over which players lists by appointing a local to select when Bafana coach to take Bafana Bafaplayed a ‘friendly’ match SHOOTI NG against England. The na back to its glory. Bra Shakes doesn’t need any inproblem started when FROM troduction to South African Safa wanted him to select THE HI P football. He made history players who had played when he took the u/23 natiabroad at the expense of WI TH onal team to the Sydney ZACHARI A NALE local players. king themselves knowing that Bra Shakes is a no-nonsense man. The next question will be: Will Safa be able to handle him, taking into consideration what happened before? Or will it just be a case of ‘kiss and make up?’ Right now what Bra Shakes needs is the nation’s full support. Furthermore, we can only wish him the best. On his head, and on his head alone, rests the ultimate success or failure of Bafana Bafana. In fact, he will never satisfy everybody, especially when it comes to the team’s selection, but hopefully, he will make many ‘eat humble pie’.
Karateka shine in Zambia VANDERBIJLPARK. - It was a proud achievement for Sedibeng Region Karate when two karateka returned from Zambia after competing in the Zone 6 African Karate Championships. The Zone 6 championship is a WKF (World Karate Federation) and SASCOC approved event, consisting of the best All Styles Karateka from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe. Brandon Shepherd won the gold medal in the Under 21 Kata Division. Tristan Heally won the silver medal in the Under 16 Kumite Division. Both karateka were awarded National Colours through KSA (Karate South Africa), the only body that is recognised by SASCOC to award National Karate Colours. Football and education go together: Jordaan Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Education plays a significant role in football. This came from Safa President Dr Danny Jordaan who was speaking during a North West University (NWU, Vaal Campus) public lecture last Friday. Jordan addressed the excited audience under the theme ‘South Africa at Twenty – The Role of Education and Sport in Nation Building’. This informative event was attended by local football administrators, students and politicians, amongst others. This was the first event of its kind to be staged in this region – with Jordaan visiting
for the first time since becoming Safa President last September. Addressing the jam-packed hall, Jordaan said education should be seen as a tool in nation building, especially in football. “It is very important for our young people to be educated because we need educated leaders of tomorrow. It doesn’t mean if you play sport, especially football, you must neglect education. This is the key element in life – to get knowledge,” he said. He also took the opportunity to address some of the challenges they face as Safa regarding the Bafana Bafana team. This was before the announcement of national team coach
Shakes Mashaba who was appointed over the weekend to take the reins of Bafana Bafana. He believes that South African football needs a total rebuilding for Bafana Bafana to be a household name. Jordaan believes that - to be a winning nation – it would take Bafana Bafana at least ten years, like Germany: “We must be patient if we want to achieve what other countries such as Germany achieved.
