Rewriting Vaal’s history Moleboheng Chaha
VEREENIGING. - “Because of the Vaal Uprising, the Vaal remains a historical landmark for South Africa. Reclaiming and rebuilding the historical legacy of the Vaal is important, but there will never be a need to go back to the past.” These words came from former Mozambican President Joaquim Chisanno as he delivered the inaugural annual lecture of the 30th Anniversary of the Vaal Uprising. Chisanno was addressing the hundreds of people who had filled the Vereeniging City Hall to capacity to attend the Lecture last week. Chisanno highlighted the fact that some of the struggles faced by the people of South Africa were similar to those faced by neighbouring African countries, especially Mozambique. “We need to remember the past for two reasons: to remember what we have achieved since then, and to ensure that history never repeats itself,” Chisanno said. Sedibeng District Municipality Executive Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng said,“The Vaal Uprising, exploding on September 3 of September 1984, heralded the beginning of the most sustained period of popular protest against the apartheid regime and profoundly altered existing power relations.” Mofokeng cited other instances where the people of this region had played a major role in the liberation of the people of South Africa adding that, “Many of the things that happened in this very region changed the political landscape of the entire country.” Emfuleni Local Municipality Sports, Recreation,
Former Mozambican pre sident Joaquim Chisanno delivered the inaugural annual lecture of the 30th Anniversary of the Vaal Uprising in Vereeniging last week.
Arts and Culture MMC Shaka Radebe stated that it was important for churhes to be recognised as entities that helped bring the apartheid regime to its knees. “In those days, churches played a very important role as they provided shelter for us. We used to hide and hold our meetings in churches,” recalled Radebe. The highlight of the night was the fact that everyone shared the opinion that, as the youth fought for liberation in the past, it was very important for the youth today to take control of the future of this country. Chisanno stated that this could only be achieved through education.

Police seize R600 000 worth of cigarettes Lazarus Dithagiso
THE BARRAGE. - The plan to transport illegal cigarettes from Lenasia Ext to Klerksdorp in North West Province was nipped in the bud. Police confiscated cigarettes with street value of R600 000 and arrested a 30-year-old suspect. Constable Jody Els and Sergeant
Isaac Ndweni of the Barrage Police Station were on patrol when they spotted a white Hyundai bakkie with tinted canopy windows on September 29 at about 15:00. They instructed the driver to pull off the road and subsequently found that the bakkie was loaded with illegal cigarettes. The driver told Police he had been in-

structed to deliver the ‘goods’ in Klerksdorp. Realising that the game was up, however, he tried to bribe the police officer with cash. He alleged that the owner of the cigarettes lives in Lenasia Extension and explained that he had just clinched the job as a driver that day: “Initially, I was brought from Lenasia to pick up the bakkie and drive it to North West,” he explained adding that the keys were already in the ignition near the Shell filling station on the Barrage Road. He told Police that he simply obeyed orders given by the owner.
Police asked him to contact the owner, who allegedly wanted the police officer to set the sum required to ‘solve’ whatever problem existed. Police appealed to the owner to come and ‘sort out’ the matter. Instead, he hung up. The suspect appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court charged with possession of illegal cigarettes. He was remanded into custody pending further investigation. It is alleged that the owner will be advised to open a case of a stolen bakkie.

SEDIBENG.- A two-year-old baby is in a critical condition after he was burned by hot water at a residence in Botswoana Road in Vanderbijlpark. ER24 paramedics arrived at the private residence and found the young patient lying on a bed in a critical condition. The mother sat next to her child, cooling him with cold water and cloths. On assessment, paramedics found that the patient had sustained burns over most of his body. The mother told paramedics that the child had pulled a pot of boiling water off the stove, causing the child to be doused in the scalding water. Paramedics provided the patient with advanced life support and transported him by the ER24 helicopter to a private Hospital in Johannesburg for urgent medical treatment.

Seven tombstones - only one unveiled
Mduduzi Mathebula
VANDERBIJLPARK. – What was supposed to be a beautiful and memorable occasion ended in embarrassment for Sarah Ramokgadi as the words engraved on her family’s tombstones were totally wrong. Ramokgadi was forced to unveil one tombstone out of seven for which she had paid Rakhale Tombstones. The unveiling turned into a ‘walk of shame’ as the masses came to Ramokgadi’s family home to witness what had been touted as ‘the biggest unveiling ever’ in Boipatong. Ramokgadi says she never thought she would walk such a road when she gathered together the little money she had to unveil her family members’ tombstones. Apparently, she paid R12 250 to Rakhale, but she received nothing but inferior work. “All the stones were wrong and the wrong names were engraved on them,” says the furious woman, who adds that Rakhale said they had a shortage of material on Friday. She apparently told Ramokgadi this 24 hours before the unveiling. “I have paid them all their money. I have
worked hard to make stones for my mother and daddy and five other family members. I wanted this day to be special but all it turned into was a walk of shame. I only unveiled one,” says Ramokgadi. Sedibeng Ster investigated the matter, starting with Rakhale. Too many stories came from a receptionist. Company employees were also sending us from pillar to post. However, Sedibeng Ster invited itself to Rakhale’s home and workshop in Zone 14. Dineo Rakhale, believed to be the owner, was not pleased by the visit, though she was obligated to be questioned as the furious Ramokgadi burst into tears on the scene. After an hour, Rakhale admitted that she and her employees were wrong. “I will try my best to fix whatever damage we caused the Ramokgadi family,” says Rakhale.

Died 30 mins after birth - what went wrong?
SHARPEVILLE. - Three weeks ago the Mohapi family from Tshepiso, Sharpeville, was expecting to be joined by a baby boy. One of their granddaughters was pregnant. But the elation of the Mohapi family only lasted 30 minutes after Maphilane had given birth. It is said she was pregnant with a baby boy when she was admitted to the Tsirela Clinic. Here was where the mishap took place. As family and friends were waiting to see the newborn, they did not know their excitement was doomed. Apparently the new entry to life did not last longer than 30 minutes. This
was according to clinic nurses who broke the tragic news to the mother. Her excitement was turned into the kind of sorrow and pain she will live with for the rest of her life. Says Mohapi: “I gave birth to a healthy baby boy which they handed to me. He was then normal. I was told to go back to the ward. About 30 minutes later, I was told my son had passed on. How this happened still does not make sense to me. My excitement turned to misery. Nine months of pain and sleepless nights went down the drain.” She says there was another young lady who was giving birth near her bed and it was also a baby boy and the babies might have been swapped.
“Something just doesn’t add up,” says Mohapi’s mother Lindiwe Mohapi, who would have been the dead baby’s grandmother. She feels that something happened to the child and suspects their child is still alive. It is said that a nurse gave the young mother groceries soon after the birth. “Why did the nurse give my daughter groceries just after my grandson had passed on? I don’t believe my grandson has passed on. We have buried the wrong baby.” Sedibeng Health Department Regional Director Salaminah Hlahane was alerted about the incident though she was not available for comment.

Rust-ter-Vaal. - Twenty-one shacks and over 100 people live close together in Rustter-Vaal. That’s in one yard in France Section. There should be one RDP house, one toilet and one communal tap. The sewerage pipes are blocked due to overcrowding and poor infrastructure. Come month-end, the landlord is said to smile all the way to the bank after each tenant pays R300. That means the landlord collects R6 300 per month. Rust-ter-Vaal is almost 18 years old. The only thing that suffers now is the bushes when ‘Mother Nature’ calls. One toilet accommodates over 50 people. “People queue for one toilet, forcing women to hide behind bushes or under the
tall grass to relieve themselves,” said George Swart, a neighbour. Swart took Sedibeng Ster to some of the RDP houses that have many shacks. The toilets are blocked with spillage coming from inside the house. Asked how they cope, Swart said they kept windows and doors closed: “It’s a pity as the children have to play far away from the houses. The Emfuleni Waste Department is doing its work but, as long as the overcrowding is not controlled, we will experience the same crisis. “There’s no joy here, especially since we accommodate all nationalities from as far afield as the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Maputo, etc. Rust-ter-ter-Vaal is like a dropping-off centre for foreign nationals in the Vaal, said Swart pleading for help.

Illegal graves crimes go unchecked in Emfuleni
Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - There are 629 undertakers, 220 unregistered graves and 40 competent certificants operating in the area of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. Over the past weeks, the municipality bylaw unit and the investigation unit discovered 12 illegal, un-procedural burials. The deceased are simply not registered by unscrupulous persons and undertakers. They resort to illegal burial without being appointed by the families. The municipality knows the funerals take
place during the week at a cheaper rate. ELM Communications officer Stanley Gaba warned the community against unscrupulous funeral undertakers who bury the deceased illegally, or who do so without registration, unprocedurally and fraudulently. One undertaker is responsible for 74 unregistered graves, Gaba reported. ELM urged bereaved families to register their deceased themselves with proper identification. More than 12 criminal charges are being pursued by the municipality. Residents are
urged to register their deceased at the offices in Vereeniging’s Adanta Building and to have proof of payment and to visit the graves a day prior to the burial to ascertain where the burial will be conducted, advises Gaba. He stressed that bereaved families should visit their respective funeral undertakers to demand receipts proving grave payment and registration. The municipality faces a situation where they cannot locate records of death. Families are unable to construct tombstones on the correct graves.

The funeral undertakers are in instances assisted by some municipal officials and it has been found that burial procedures and rates were deliberately not attended to. Illegal, unprocedural and unregistered funerals, or the illegal erection of tombstones, will be stopped at the expense of the undertaker concerned and of any family that has not complied with the notice or advice. Gaba said admin that should incorporate grave numbers should be issued by the municipality upon registration before any burial.

As 2014 reaches its climatic finale, people are making big changes and doing exciting things. It’s astounding to see so many of friends and family pursue and achieve success. There has been a lot of good to go around lately. It’s not by luck – it’s not by chance – It starts and ends with hard work. Determination, motivation, perseverance, commitment, and passion. I have never believed that people should be judge solely on their age. I have also never believed that young people cannot achieve greatness and success or that they should always be reminded of their lack of experience when they should be given support to achieve greater heights. Many young people in this region are successful and doing things for themselves, this in itself should say a lot. People who make the choice to study, work hard or do whatever they ende-

Gauteng ready Edu-College tops for 2014 Grade 12 exams SEDIBENG.- In two weeks 143 647 Grade 12 learners across Gauteng Province will begin their annual National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. The Gauteng Department of Education has this year registered a total of 101 265 full time candidates and 42 382 part time candidates. These candidates will be writing their exams in 928 centres across all 15 Districts in Gauteng. The Department has appointed 8090 markers and 4789 envigilators in 11 marking centres across the province. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane says that preparations to ensure that these exams run smoothly can be a huge logistical nightmare. “However, we want to assure the people of Gauteng that we are ready as a province and it will be all systems go come October 27 when the

NEW COMPUTER CENTRE FOR SASOLBURG LIBRARY Ikusasa, Sasol’s infrastructure and community development programme, will upgrade computer facilities at the Sasolburg Public Library to increase computer availability to the public of Metsimaholo. The Sasolburg Public Library is one of the most utilised library facilities in Metsimaholo as it is open after hours and on Saturdays. Although the library still focuses on printed material such as books, magazines and newspapers as primary information source, it has been experiencing a sharp increase in the demand for electronic information. According to Estelle Boers, assistant manager Metsimaholo libraries, the Sasolburg Library cannot meet the demand for computer use. “We currently have six computers available for public use, while we have at least 50 requests for use per day. Although we limit computer time to one hour sessions with a maximum of two hours per person per day, we are struggling to meet the increasing demand,” says Mrs Boers. “Although the computers are used by learners and adults, the already high demand increases even further during the school term as learners rely on information from the Internet to enhance their school projects,” she added. Ikusasa investment Sasol, through the Ikusasa programme, embarked on a project to provide a new computer facility inside the Sasolburg Library to increase computer availability to the public. The centre will be housed in the current information section where minor modifications will be done to the present structure.
Partitioning will be installed and changes made to some of the glass walls in the library. Apart from the physical modifications, Ikusasa will provide 20 computers and two network printers. New network points will be installed and the port switch upgraded. New furniture will also be provided. One of the highlights of the facility would be a work station for the visually impaired (Victor Reader) that reads text that appears on a computer screen out loud. Commitment to the community Sasol’s Ikusasa public/private partnership seeks to create a more conducive environment for talent, strengthen internal and external partnerships, and build capacity in our host municipalities in the Sasolburg and Secunda regions. Education is one of the primary focus areas of Ikusasa and while an extensive investment has been made in the schools of Metsimaholo since 2012, increasing computer capacity at the Sasolburg Library is also an investment in adult education. The computer centre project is a further investment by Ikusasa in the Sasolburg Public Library where maintenance work was recently done to this landmark in Metsimaholo. In 1997 the Sasolburg Public Library won the Fulton Award from the Concrete Society of Southern Africa for excellence in the use of concrete.

Paralympics star lives his dream Zacharia Nale
SEBOKENG. - Tshepo Bhebe (22) is living testimony the conviction that no-one should feel sorry for themselves regardless of how or where they are born. This Sebokeng Zone 10-based runner is living his dream to become a household name in South African athletics. Born without an arm, he never felt sorry for himself but he took athletics as his career. This Paralympics runner started his running career competing against normal athletes before his former teacher introduced him to disabled sports. Little did he know that one day he would be competing abroad representing his country in the international stage? The recent achievement still fresh in his mind was when he went to represent South Africa at the International Paralympics Committee Games held in France early this year. Bhebe says this was the biggest achievement in his career even though it was not the first time he competed abroad. He also went to Dubai and London to represent his country in disabled sport. This multi-medalist competes in the 100, 200 and 4000m, and is enjoying each and every moment of his running career. In an exclusive interview with Sedibeng Ster, Bhebe says he doesn’t see himself as a physically disabled person. He says he can do everything that normal people do. “ I don’t see myself as a physically disabled person because when I started my career I was competing against normal people and I used to beat them. This is how I was

born and I won’t change this because God knows why he made me like this. I fear nothing because God is with me,” says Bhebe. He is greatful for the support his mother – Nomvula - gives in general and he believes that if it wasn’t for her, he could not have gotten to where he is today. Meanwhile, Bhebe is preparing for the national qualifier scheduled to take place next year at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Bhebe pleads with companies that would like to sponsor him to please get in contact with him through this paper.

Build It school soccer tournament around the corner
Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Bophelong primary schools are looking forward to battling for honour when the Build It Vanderbijlpark U/13 Soccer Tournament starts. This much anticipated development soccer tournament is scheduled to take place at Cecil Oldridge Park on October 19.
There are many coaches, especially development coaches, who want to be part of the structure but not of the political structure. Coaches must leave boardroom politics to administrators and focus on technical matters. They should not mix issues. Period! If the Sedibeng Regional Football Coaches Association wants to reach development coaches, they must embark on roadshows and watch junior soccer matches at the various venues here in Sedibeng. The junior soccer matches play every weekend in this region. This is the only way they can be able to reach development coaches in this region, otherwise, they must forget. Lastly, if I was Junior Gusha and his sidekicks, I would call Philip Ndlovu to acknowledge his efforts to ensure that the Promotion League does play in this region. If it wasn’t for him, Shooting From The Hip doesn’t think the Promotion League and the Junior League would have played in Sedibeng. Forget about the man’s blunders because many before him also failed. Give credit where it is due. THANK YOU!

Manchester United School Camps 2015 SEDIBENG.- Registration into the Manchester United Soccer Schools Camps 2015 is now open. The 2015 Soccer Camps will be held in the nine provinces of South Africa: the Eastern Cape, The Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West and the Western Cape. The camp dates are from March 30
fuleni Local Football Association squads were set to be selected at the dusty James Grounds. Some of the teams were excluded from selections. The failure of our regional teams to honour this annual youth tournament is due to nothing more than boardroom politics in this region. For some reason the people who were part of the team last year were sidelined. For what, no one knows! As things stand, some local footballer people are concentrating on elections and forget that football is football in the field of play. These youngsters will hate us for denying them the opportunity to play at that level as it is the only platform - especially for them - from which to showcase their talent against the best in Gauteng. The problem with our football is that everyone pretends they care but in reality they don’t give a damn about development of football in this region. Now Shooting From The Hip was told that the Sedibeng Regional Football Coaches Association has joined this unholy meetings held in this region. As the coaches association they should be worried about what is happening in the field of play - not in boardroom.
The tournament will see Bophelong primary schools battling through the day for the tournament championship. The organisers promise the best entertainment ever in this year’s tournament. Preparations for the tournament are at an advanced stage and the schools are ready to do battle in the field of play.

History is going to judge us very harshly for the talent we fail nurture in this region. Shooting From The Hip is aware that the Safa Sedibeng Regional Squad didn’t honour this year’s Safa Legacy Junior Tournament. This is sad for football, especially for the youngsters, because the tournament gives them a
platform from which to play against other Gauteng regions. Last year Safa Sedibeng Regional u/15s were the finalists before they lost to Safa Johannesburg on penalties under the leadership of Yours Truly ‘Shooting From The Hip’, Tebello Kheswa and Thulani Mthimkhulu, who was Technical Director. However, this year all the teams, u/13 and u/15, both boys and girls, didn’t participate in this annual tournament - for ‘unknown’ reasons. The problem started when the Em-

Mayoral Golf Day aids education in Midvaal MEYERTON.- Midvaal Local Municipality annual Mayoral Golf Day was held last Wednesday at the Eye of Africa Golf Course, and was once again a huge success. 14 companies participated in the competition, which was eventually won by team BBP. Prizes were awarded to the top 5 teams, to the team who had the “longest day”, and a special raffle prize was also on offer, with proceeds from the raffle tickets further assisting the cause for education. R80 000 was raised to assist education in Midvaal, and the four recipient schools, who will each receive R20 000, were extremely grateful for the donation. The principals of the four schools, namely Laerskool Midvaal, De Deur Primary, Sicelo Primary and Laerskool Re-
publiek attended the event and thanked the sponsors and the Mayor for their contributions. The money will be used for feeding schemes and materials required by the learners. Midvaal’s Mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi, who for the first time took to the greens to show his support for the cause, thanked the stakeholders who had participated in the golf day, and highlighted the important role that the private sector plays in assisting worthy causes which government cannot always help due to limited resources. He also proposed that going forward; the private sector should share skills with and mentor needy schools, for example, in areas like business and financial management.

Sedibeng MCS Cup set to kick off

SEDIBENG. - The annual Sedibeng MSC Cup is scheduled to take place on October 25 at Shakespeare Stadium in Vanderbijlpark. This was revealed during the briefing held at Mohloli Secondary School on Sunday. According to the organisers the tournament was supposed to start during school holidays but the fields are still under maintenance. Tournament director Sello Tshabalala says they wanted to start the tournament during this school holidays but, due to unavailability of venues, it will start on the above-mentioned date.
The follow-up meeting is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday at the same venue – Mohloli Secondary School at 8:00. According to Tshabalala they expect 16 teams in each category: the u/13, u/15, u/17 and senior men’s soccer teams. There will also be a women’s soccer team category consisting of eight teams. The tournament is one of the biggest tournaments to be staged in this region with the main objective being to give the youngsters an opportunity to showcase their talent by playing in better conditions. To make things interesting, the only time some of these youngsters have the opportunity to play on turf is during the MCS Cup. The

tournament plays at the Shakespeare grounds in Vanderbijlpark and at the George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville. Just like last year, the tournament will start on a round-robbin system in the u/13 and u/15 with the u/17 being the knockout stage. Mpholo’s involvement in football is not questionable as he is involved with the Sedibeng Masters Regional Association and the Sedibeng Regional Coaches Association. Gusha believes that much that needs to change in local football as far as the administration is concerned: “I believe that Mr Martin Mpholo is the right person for the position because of his experience. “He has been there for a long time and I think he will help us improve the standard of our football, especially administration-wise. “ The only problem with our football is leadership. This is the area in which we fail because the people we elected in the past didn’t understand their roles and responsibilities.” Gusha also revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that Kind Radebe from Sharpeville is their candidate for Treasurer.
