Caught red handed An unknown man was brutally beaten by passersby after he stole money from a car in Vanderbijilpark next to Vaalgate Shopping Centre. Photos: Moleboheng Chaha Moleboheng Chaha
VANDERBIJILPARK. - Mob justice has become common in society. An alleged thief took a beating from passers-by when he was spotted taking a substantial amount of money from a white van parked opposite the Vaalgate Shopping Centre on Friday. The driver had left the vehicle unlocked because he knew that he would be able to keep his eye on his vehicle the whole time. He instantly spotted the suspect taking the money from his van and started to scream. He then chased the suspect and was able to catch him with some assistance from eye-witnesses. “I heard a commoti-
on from where I was standing and ran out to see what was happening. Upon my arrival I saw that the suspect had been caught,” says Fusi Lethatsa, a member of the security personnel at Vaalgate. Angry people who had seen the incident took it upon themselves to discipline the suspect after the driver had taken his money back. One witness stated that although it was upsetting to see the man being beaten, the community has had enough of crime. The man, who sustained minor injuries, was told by the community to apologise.

Taxi rides rife with rifles Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Police intercepted a gang believed to be behind taxi violence in the Province and seized two R5 rifles with their serial numbers scraped off. They found them in an old training municipality camp near Kwa Masiza flats on Saturday in the early hours of the morning. Four suspects working in the taxi industry have been taken into custody and will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. More charges related to murder and attempted murder may be added as the investigation continues. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini says the arsenal was discovered by members of the South African Police Service National Crime Intelligence Unit working with members of the Gauteng Traffic Saturation Unit. “Police were following information related to taxi violence as well as firearms that are alle-
gedly used by so called ‘hit-men’ in the taxi violence. They searched the premises and discovered the firearms and ammunition locked in an old steel cabinet. These include two R5 rifles, 36 rounds of R5 rifle ammunition, 20 LMG rifle rounds and 25 rounds for 9mm pistols,” says Dlamini. During the operation four suspects were arrested immediately after the search. Dlamini says that since the beginning of this month Crime Intelligence members seized three pistols at Sharpeville, a pistol and an AK47 in Alexandra. He adds that all the suspects arrested have been linked to taxi violence in the province. These firearms will be sent for ballistic examination and further analysis. As investigation continues, the firearms in question may be linked to several cases of murder and attempted murder including those cases already undergoing judicial determination.
These are the guns used to spread taxi violence around the province. Police had to search for such guns over the weekend.
Your money disappears just like that Moleboheng Chaha
SEDIBENG. - Dark days loom for many as the card-cloning trend spirals - a trend that has seen many families going hungry. Those who have experienced it first-hand can attest to the fact that their money disappeared before their very eyes while they were still holding their bank cards. A recent victim who alleges that his card was cloned at a local shopping mall in Sebokeng says, “I was behind a man who was busy at the ATM. “I was next in line so when he finished I approached the ATM and inserted my card. “A slip came out and the man who had gone before me returned for it. I simply gave it to him.” According to the victim he instantly saw funny characters appear on the ATM and his card was subsequently swallowed. Within minutes he was alerted by SMS that a large amount of money had been withdrawn from a nearby ATM. Police spokesperson Warrant officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkhulu urges people to be vigilant when it comes to bank cards, “People must be aware of suspicious individuals standing at ATMs with laptops or other devices that make it possible to clone cards.” Mthimkhulu adds that this trend is something that has been seen to be growing as more and more people come forward to report such cases at the different police stations. “We appeal to the public to not give their cards to others. People should rather go inside the banks to make withdrawals.”

Your ‘rubbish’ is my food Mduduzi Mathebula

Thandi Sophola cannot live a day without digging into people’s rubbish because it is rubbish that puts food on her table.
Prof Isma & Mama Sarah Enemies Came To Confess to Me After many years of unhappy marriage, living in pain everyday. Pastors were praying for me but no difference. Another day I heard from Radio & in news papers that there is a professor, who helped my friend’s son, he was addicted to drugs, I started to attend to him, he checks by using water in a bowl and mirror. After only one week my enemies came to me to confess, is when I saw my husband’s girlfriend in the mirror. I can thank the professor by telling people about his good job.

VANDERBIJLPARK. -Paulose Dlamini lives with his four children and wife. He has no source of income but this father is not ashamed to dig into people’s discards to collect empty plastic bottles. Sedibeng Ster visited Dlamini, his family and colleagues at their work place. This group of unemployed people treasure what other people discard as rubbish. With a trolley filled with plastic bottles they can have something to eat for the night. “The world is tough out there. I have to provide for my family. Half a loaf is better than nothing. At least I can give my children something to eat,” says Dlamini. Thandi Sophola, also doing the same job, says collecting bottles is better than selling her body for money. “This kind of work does not stop. Come rain or cold, I have to go out and look for collectables. If I don’t I will sleep without food,” says Sophola. According to the group they make up to R40 to R50 maximum per day which is what sustains them and their children.

Deal with corruption no fear or favour Zacharia Nale’s
Guest
Comment
Politics has taught us that to lead one must apparently be corrupt! Corruption is something that has been detected locally and nationally - the election of people who have crimi-
nal records stands out as an obvious example. Here at home, how many political leaders were involved in serious corruption but were then still voted into the most powerful position in their organisation or in government? The message is clear - be as corrupt as possible and you will become a leader! But are those leaders who are brave enough to fight against corruption victimised for daring to blow the whistle on corruption? It is no surprise to see so much corruption in this country, including this region. Those with long memories will recall how former Emfuleni Mayor Dikeledi Tsotetsi’s Arcon Park home was `visited’ by ANC per-
sonages after she and the municipal manager made history by setting up a hot line so whistle-blowers could report corruption. This was subsequentlty `hijacked’ by the ANC. She and Dr Bhakane-Toane were redeployed because they wanted to expose certain “untouchable” political leaders in this region, especially their comrades at Emfuleni. Tsotetsi herself refused to be ‘intimidated’! Mayors have changed like a floating trophy - especially at Emfuleni Local Municiplaity. How many incidents of corruption, rape and other crimes were reported against political leaders in this region with nothing being done about it?

And in the next election the very same corrupted leaders are voted into the most powerful positions in their political organisation or municipality. Tsotetsi was a victim of circumstances and so were other mayors before her. Mlungise Hlongwane was another Mayor at Sedibeng District Municipality who was sacrificed because he was too smart or, should I say, too intelligent, to believe everything that came from his fellow comrades. His only sin was that he was too “independent” when it came to political decisions and was not a `yes man’ controlled by `powerful comrades’. So what happened to him? He was recalled by his organisation! Our youth don’t learn anything from many of their political leaders. I don’t remember attending political gatherings where you hear a leader make sense regarding the future of young people in this region. All the speeches are about election campaigns and who to vote for. Not very educational! The point I’m trying to drive home is that we shut people down. We should not be afraid to tackle corruption without fear or favour we should be able to speak against corrupt political leaders in this region. Lastly, bring back those intelligent leaders who made us listen to and think about their speeches. Having said this, there are still good leaders out there who still command respect.

THE BARRAGE. – The Vanderbijlpark Magistrate Court has sent two accused ‘down’ for house-breaking and theft. They are Mkhathazo Mkhoba and Baba Mkhoba, who will spend 12 and eight years respectively in prison. Both have been declared unfit to possess firearms. They were arrested after breaking in at Vaaloewer Smallholdings on January 6. Police spokesperson, Constable Simon Mofokatsana said the suspects gained entry by cutting the electric fence and then breaking into the house of David Loozal. The owner was not around during the break-in. On his arrival, he alerted the Police, who managed to arrest two suspects - one hidden under a quad bike, another under a caravan. They were both charged with theft and house-breaking.

Sedibeng prays for Madiba magic Lazarus Dithagiso
VEREENIGING. - Different denominations joined under one roof to link hands in prayer with the District Executive Mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng. This was for the speedy recovery of the anti-apartheid icon Madiba ‘Magic’ Mandela. According to President Jacob Zuma, Man-
dela is said to be in a ‘critical but stable’ condition after suffering from a recurrent lung infection. Madiba has already spent more than three weeks at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital, Pretoria. Church members sang prayers and ANC struggle songs.Cllr Mofokeng was joined by no less than 80 people including women of the cloth and church leaders at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre on
June 28. Speaking about the condition of Mandela, Mofokeng says it’s everybody’s wish to see the former President of the ANC and the country back on his feet again. Cllr Mofokeng appealed to people in the region to rally behind our freedom fighter for a speedy recovery so he is able to return home to be with his family. Regional ANC secretary Bob Mthembu announced that the entire area arranged the prayer session. He said the country is holding its breath over the fate of its struggle icon. “The legacy Mandela has left us - let’s pray for it.” explained Mthembu. A message
displayed on the screen read, “Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with you always, from the people of Sedibeng.” Bishop Dr Phillip Molefe of Christian Centres Churches International, mentioned in his prayer that if God wants to take Mandela to a better place, let it be. “No one is above God’s decision. As Christians and believers, we put our hopes in the hands of God. Mandela is an icon, the ultimate son of the soil,” he said. All knelt down, asking for the Almighty to respond to the prayers sent out for Mandela during this moment of sadness.”

Instilling positivity in young minds
Moleboheng Chaha
PALM SPRINGS. - The dusty streets of Palm Springs are just a short hurdle for the Othando Youth Club, that trains passionate youths as Drum Majorretes, in Drama and in Poetry. Lettie Chauke founded the club she now co-owns with Smangele Mkhaliphi in 2005 and registered it as an NPO (nonprofit organisation) in 2007. “The youth of today is in desperate need of guidance towards positive thinking and deeds. This was initially my aim,” says Chauke. Chauke adds that being involved in activities can help kids stay away from things like crime and drugs and falling prey to teenage pregnancy. Mkhaliphi says, “The kids here come from different backgrounds and some have had very troubled lives.” She adds that she and her colleague even talk to these youths about their experiences at home and at school, and involve the police when needed. Chauke says she would like this to be a project that exists within all the different communities in order to help kids overcome things such as peer pressure and conformity. One of the youth-club members, 16-year-old Mpho Hlatshwayo, says, “Being here has really taught and helped me a lot. I have become more respectful and focused. I really want to encourage young kids like me to come here and see for themselves.” Chauke and Mkhaliphi would also like to urge sponsors to come forward in aid of the venture that aims to empower the youth. “We are in urgent need of uniforms and drums,” ends Chauke. Anyone who can assist with any form of sponsorship can contact Othando Youth Club on 073 6167814

SHARPEVILLE. - The former learners of Tsoelopele Primary School have established a reunion Task Team to get hold of former learners. The idea - led by Oupa ‘Mr Cool’ Lukhela of Palm Court Hotel - received the blessing from Dr Morake, former CEO of Sebokeng Hospital. First, the school wants to build a database of Tsoelopele during its reunion. Taskers recently met at the school led by Principal Ntonga Edwana, on June 22. A commitment was made to detail the history of the school. It was discovered that an international artist Hugh Masikela, not to mention Dr Morake, started their education there in the late 60s. In his keynote address, Dr Morake said he started Sub A in 1963 and proceeded until 1966. The school was situated near Boitsoso Primary. The Vaal Triangle extended to Meyerton and had only three black schools in Sharpeville, including Rome, Moedi and Tsoelopele. This was before Sebokeng was born, he ex-
plained. Among former learners were Dr Sakoane, now doing business in England, and Ms Thembi in Pretoria, to mention but a few. “The teachers of that time used to attend school for a whole month without getting ill. We used bucket toilets and had no electricity. We had small libraries, but never complained about the system of education,” adds Dr Morake. “I’m not saying you’re not supposed to fight for your rights, but sometimes you should stand on your own feet,” he said. After completing his matric with distinctions, Dr Morake went on to study further overseas. ‘Mr Cool’ said he felt that the learners of those years have to come back in a reunion to see how best they can help uplift the education of learners at present. “It’s no use just driving by a school that has produced doctors, professors and educators. Let’s plough back into our community,” says Mr Cool. He believes the final celebration should be conducted on December 7. ‘We invite all former learners to contact Sagia Chesane on 072 2685 166 and Ntonga Edwana on 082 557 0015.

Not ANC or DA but football SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale
sation. Gentlemen, if you want to run our football like a political party, you are in the wrong organisation. At this level it is all about development. Looking at what’s going around, keep in mind that to rubbish other people’s names just because you want votes won’t help you. This is our football and I’m a hundred-percent sure that no-one will mess up this beautiful game. Not as long as Shooting From The Hip is still alive and kicking! Shooting From The Hip was told that the very same gentlemen who want to be voted to the Safa national office are the ones causing confusion at their ANC branches in this region. They must choose between politics and football and I don’t think they’re welcome in our football. This is the problem when we allow mediocre people to run our football. Now we are stuck with these “mamparas.” This is also the problem when you give power to stupid people. They will abuse it because they think they are untouchable! Please get rid of power-drunk football administratorsl. The sooner, the better!
If there are people who think they own football in this region, they’d better think again. No-one owns this beautiful game! This message is directed at all those people who are involved in the development of football in this region, especially football administrators. I think the time has come for teams to get rid of “gravy-train” football administrators who use our sport to achieve their personal glory. There is a power struggle among certain local football personages who wanted to be elected to go to the Safa national office. Yet some of these so-called administrators think they can represent this region at Safa’s national office even though they are wet behind the ears. They know this themselves, and they should not be allowed to achieve this at the expenses of REVIEW OF DRAFT BASIC our teams. Juventus fails to regain Vodacom League status
Zacharia Nale
SASOLBURG. - Disappointment was written all over the faces of Sasolburg Juventus FC’s supporters after their team failed to gain promotion to Safa Vodacom League recently. Prior to the Provincial Playoffs - the club’s supporters were confident that “Setsokotsane” would bounce back to the Vodacom League. The Playoffs took place in Bloemfontein recently. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, spokesperson of disappointed supporters –
Lekgwakgwa Mokoena - said even though they were disappointed, they had put their disappointment behind them. Mokoena says they can’t fault players as they did everything in their power to win these playoffs, but it was not their day. “Obviously, it was our aim to return to the Vodacom League, but life must go on. It is now back to the drawing board for all of us including management, players and technical staff. I think we also need to recruit new players to strengthen our squad,” he concludes.

local electrical infrastructure upgraded Sasol, through our infrastructure development programme, Ikusasa is upgrading existing electrical infrastructure to improve the quality of electrical supply in the Metsimaholo area as the unreliability of the supply impacts industries in the area as well as local residents. Cable and copper theft have also negatively impacted the infrastructure integrity. The work primarily looks at upgrading of the local distribution network. As power supply protection systems, as the general discrimination during fault conditions, and critical components such as high voltage circuit breakers, pose a safety risk during operation. Sasol is performing a number of activities to improve the situation. These include work associated with the supply and installation of 2036m of power cables, including all the additional work to restore the environment such as opening and closing of trenches, paving and road repair to name but a few. Distribution feeder maintenance is also being done. A total of 157 feeders at 22 substation feeder panels in Sasolburg, Vaalpark, Zamdela, Deneysville and Oranjeville are receiving attention. Upgrading of switch gear inside three substations will be done in August 2013. Work to repair and move existing house service connection cables from temporary buildings to new RDP houses in Zamdela, will be done during July 2013. The project scope is to repair and move the existing house service connection cables from temporary buildings to new RDP houses in Zamdela. The project will also repair cables experiencing communication problems and replace stolen cables. The work is being executed by approved local service providers under Sasol supervision and in consulting with the electrical department of Metsimaholo.

SHARPVILLE. - Celta Vigo FC and Vaal Milano FC are red-hot favourites to be crowned the Makgothamishe Building Construction Soccer Tournament Champions - if these two sides’ current performance is anything to go by. These two teams have demonstrated their superiority in the senior category since the tournament started dishing out some exciting football. This tournament is currently under way at the dusty soccer grounds of James in Sharpeville. However, these two sides’ character will really be tested when they compete in the last eight fixtures this coming Saturday. The Zone 3 based side – Celta Vigo FC - will play against Try Me Again, while Vaal Milano FC will be pitted against Sedibeng FC. On paper, these two sides look like they will
have no problem in tearing their opponents into two parts come Saturday. Celta Vigo FC is known as a tournament specialist. To date, last year December crowned Pooe Festive Soccer Tournament champions led by Themba Dlamini. Other Saturday fixtures are as follows, Italian Job FC will exchange blows with VSOP FC, while Monaco FC locks horns in another last eight fixtures. In the junior category Benfica and Mighty Stars are also favourites to walk away with the first prize in the u/15s. Benfica FC shocked many when they beat Vaal Milano FC u/15s. This was the upset of the weekend. Benfica will battle against Bophelong Barcelona FC in the u/15 semi-final on Thursday, while Mighty Stars clash with Celta Vigo FC. As things stand, Benfica and Mighty Stars look like they will meet in the final.
Promotion League demand urgent special general meeting Zacharia Nale
Benfica FC made history when they booted Vaal Milano FC out of the Makgotamishe Building Construction Soccer Tournament semifinals over the weekend.
SEBOKENG.- The “gatvol” Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League demand a Special General Meeting within seven working days to address their concern. The meeting took place at the Community Hall in Zone 14, Sebokeng, where more than 30 teams signed a petition demanding an urgent meeting on July 7. The things the teams want to address include the dysfunction of the organisation (Emfuleni Local Football Association), finances, and Promotion League prizes. The teams say failure to attend will leave them with no option but to elect an interim committee to run the affairs of the association. The club’s representatives say they are very disappointed with the ELA executive committee for lack of interest in the development of football in
this region. On the other hand, the teams were full of praise for Philip Ndlovu for single-handedly dealing with the affairs of the association after other executive committees had shown no interest. Ndlovu also went out his way to make sure the Promotion League started in this region. Sedibeng Ster Newspaper has learned that the clubs have already submitted their petition to the ELA and Safa Sedibeng general secretaries. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Ndlovu says he was there to take the club’s grievances to the relevant authorities. “Look, I’m not commenting on this matter because I am also part of executive committee. Yes, I was there because I am the one helping with Promotion League. This is a sensitive issue to discuss with the media,” he concluded.
