Giant rat rattles family SEBOKENG.- ‘Ubu thakathi lobu’. (This is pure witchcraft). These are the words of a Zone 7 family that was shocked recently when they found a gigantic rat inside their yard. Collen Maseko who lives in the yard discovered the rat that had apparently been bitten by dogs and left for dead. Maseko states that a shared opinion between him, and others that had come to witness the occurance was that the rat was an object of witchcraft. “Hai, Izinto za bantu lezi,” meaning that the rat might have been sent by people to bewitch the family. The family resoluted to burning the rat that ‘resembled a cat’ with the hope of ridding it of whatever ‘demons’ it might have brought. Community members that were passing by were shocked by the sight of the ‘giant rat’ as they came inside the yard to view it. Some of the youth that had been amongst the viewers say, “We have been complaining about the lack of employment affecting us and this might be one of the causes.” They add that some nights people around the township hear what seems like footsteps which can be mistaken for those of human beings on top of their roofs. “I have seen all sorts of rats before, but never have I seen one so big! This could be some sort of a curse,” ends Maseko. *These huge rats have been known to be found in most townships, with the health department associating them with the rubbish dumps that are at nearly every corner.

Play this game and win with Bob! Mobile phones are no longer mere communication devices. Today, mobile phones are used for different purposes - they have become entertainment gadgets with music, film and game applications. As a matter of fact, mobile phones have become an integral part of the lives of people today. With this in mind the North West University’s Vaal Triangle Campus launched its first-ever mobile game – Univenture, to aid in the student recruitment process. This interactive game, developed by Martin Booth -

a postgraduate student from the South African Serious Games Institute (SGI-SA), allows prospective students to familiarise themselves with not only the academic offerings but also the campus environment. The South African Serious Games Institute is hosted within the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Information Technology. The purpose of the game – which comprises several levels - is to aid Bob (a prospective student) to make a decision about a future career by visiting the different faculties and academic

schools. The game can only be completed once Bob has acquainted himself with all seven academic schools. Each stage of the game represents an academic school and as you progress through the different levels you are informed about the necessary requirements for each field of study. Along the way Bob meets various members of the campus community including the campus’s much-loved gaggle of geese! Register on Sedibeng Ster Mobi at http: //sedibengster.mobi/ and click on the Univenture link for down-

load instructions. Tell us what you think of the game on our mobi site and stand a chance to win pizza vouchers and double movie tickets from Ster Kinekor or one of many CDs! At the moment the game is only available on android but you can also play it on your computer. If you don’t have an android phone, register on Sedibeng Ster’s mobi site anyway there are lots of Vaalie news every day and stacks of fun is on the way!

sasol national winter swimming championships 2013 a record success The Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships proved to be one of the most successful events to date, with an all-time high of 15 records broken. Held at the Penny Heyns Swimming Pool in Sasolburg from 24 to 29 June 2013, swimmers from across South Africa and neighbouring countries participated. Ude Fuchs from Progress Swimming Club in Polokwane, on a winning streak, broke the record for the 50m backstroke (15 year old), with a time of 28.82. The record was previously set by Wessel Ludick in 2008 with a time of 30.15. Fuchs said, “To break a record is a great achievement, as training commences at the beginning of the year for the event. I look forward to the Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships, as it is the first gala event of the season and new swimming times are set.” Tanya Pieterse swimming for Kovsies, Ethan de Wit also with Kovsies and Cullen Thomas from Welkom Aquatics each have two new records against their names. Now in its 42nd year, this week long event is the only national swimming championship to be hosted in an outdoor heated

swimming pool. This event, accredited by Swim South Africa is a prominent meet on the swimming calendar and has been a starting block for many aspiring Olympic swimmers including Ryk Neethling, Roland Schoeman, Penny Heyns, Chad le Clos and Mandy Loots. Olympian and gold medalist, Ryk Neethling, who previously competed at the event said, “The Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships was definitely very instrumental in my growth as a swimmer. The competition was tough and it taught me to focus under adversity (cold weather and long days).” Neethling's 1987 record for the 50m backstroke (under 10) was almost broken by Zander Landman who missed the record time by 0.04 seconds. Ivor Zwane, General Manager: Public Affairs, Sasol Sasolburg said, “Sasol believes in building great South Africans through our many sponsorship programmes. We believe that this event will assist with the growth and development of some of the participants to become South Africa's future champions”.

Cullen Thomas from Welkom Aquatics powered through the 50m backstroke setting a new record time of 31.68

SEBOKENG.-Intelligent, loving, honest and obedient are the words Paseka Mafube uses to describe his slain son Dichaba “Keke” Mafube. Dichaba met his death recently when his car was allegedly shot at by six policemen in Sebokeng. The 22-year-old North West University second year Accounting student was allegedly chased to his death by policemen after he apparently refused to be pulled over in the early hours of the morning last Wednesday. Talking about the tragic death of his son, Paseka Mafube states that he feels an enormous void and that the family had lost an asset. “I last saw my son on Tuesday when he was heading to see his friend in hospital. I knew he would then de-

tour to university. The sombre father adds that he and his wife later received a call from their son informing them that he would be late. “We were woken up by sirens outside our house and because my wife feared that Keke might had been involved in an accident, she urged me to follow the police cars which I did,” he says. Arriving at the scene Paseka says he recognised his son’s car, a silver Toyota tazz surrounded by police cars next to a petrol station in Zone 14, and a closer look told him there was no longer life in his son’s body. “My son did not pose any threat to the police. He has driven that car to and from campus for almost two years now. I would like to see justice being served. “The police are the only people that know why they did what they did and they are the ones that need to confess” adds an agonised Paseka. Dichaba’s childhood friend Mogale Motau says “Keke had a lot to live for and never did it cross my mind that one day we would

have to bury him. It feels like just yesterday when he and I were kicking the ball together and I will forever miss him.” According to news reports the IPID (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) are investigating a case of murder.

Police Officer rapes 13yearold Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARMS. - A 13-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a police officer who is based at Ennerdale Police Station over the weekend. According to a family member who’s name cannot be mentioned to protect the family and the girl’s identity, the 13-year-old was asked by her grandmother to go with her cousin to pay for their youth group trip. This was where the nightmare began. On their way they were approached by an Opel Corsa that was driven by the police

officer. The officer apparently used pepper spray on the victim, put her in the car and took her to Kliprivier where he hid the car in the ditch and raped the victim. According to the police the suspect was caught red handed by other police officers who were passing by. They were suspicious when they spotted the vehicle in the ditch and went to investigate. The policeman was caught in the act. The police officer has since been arrested and faces charges of statutory rape.

Lerato Serero News Editor Comments

I have never been a fan of an immature adult that goes around throwing tantrums when things do not go their way. It makes me mad to encounter such an ‘adult’ as I believe that

I am not your fan!

this behaviour is only observed when one encounters a child. The present situation in the Mandela family is one good example of toys raining from a cot. I mean, how do you explain the children and grandchildren taking each other to court and fighting over inheritance and burial procedures while the icon is still alive? This is unheard of in African culture. There are many instances where you find

an adult in a fit of rage just because they have not achieved their goals (some of them mischievous). One other example is that of politicians who decide to open their own political party’s just because the one they were with decided to discipline them for their discrepancies or even worse - community members that decide to loot and burn facilities to the ground. Tomorrow however they will ask that these facilities be rebuilt because they ‘need’

them. I believe that such ‘adults’ lack the capacity to be strong enough and stand up for what they believe. Their thinking part of the brain is underdeveloped and it is important for those who have the reasoning capacity to take their hands and show them the way or they will forever leap into a paroxysm when things do not go their way, childish as they are. Like young children they need reassurance, nurturing and an understanding from adults as they do not understand their ‘big feelings’ or the very tantrum that they are throwing. So if you are one of the above, please do not despise me for not being your fan. Lerato...

It is a bitter pill to swallow SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale

The pain that football administrators are causing to up and coming footballers is a bitter pill to swallow. This year Sedibeng will not be represented in the U/21 SAB Gauteng team because no players were selected from this region. Last year we had 4 players from this region in the team but not this time around. This is very upsetting for local football because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any soccer star. Shooting From The Hip is quite aware that the information about the tournament never reached the intended parties like it was the case last year. Why are football administrators in this region denying these youngsters the opportunity to play at the highest level of football in

this country? This kind of tournament is a right platform for these boys to showcase their talent and maybe to catch the attention of the national teams’ scouts. The only thing that we are good at in this region is pulling people down with our PHDS (Pull Him Down Syndrome) styles. These youngsters have nothing to do with your indifference. The only thing they are interested in is to play football. As things stand now – football is dead in this region because football administratorsare focusing on boardroom politics. There is no one who is brave enough to address the sorry state of football in this region. There is a serious need to call a Soccer Indaba to address some of the things that destroy our beautiful game. Things are getting out of control and no one seems to have the guts to take a stand and stop the rot. Fear not! The question that Shooting From The Hip is asking is: Who is to blame for this situation, Safa Sedibeng, Local Football Association or Emfuleni Local Municipality? Please don’t accuse Shooting From The Hip of singing praise songs for Emfuleni Local Municipality because that is not the case.

The tournament organiser, Lehlohonolo Masharole believes that this is going to be an exciting final because both teams also boast with some exciting players. “I have no doubt that this is going to be a humdinger final taking into consideration that both play entertaining football. Meanwhile, Ndlovu revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports that he considers resigning as Emfuleni Local Executive Committee Member following the weekend meeting. “I have come to the point where I feel that being part of that executive committee is too much pain to bear. It is not as if I quit football but I will continue to serve football at a club level. Things are becoming too personal,” he concludes. WEEKEND FIXTURES:

BOIPATONG.- Taka Nkonyana hailed this year’s Young, Gifted and Bold Tournament, held at the Boipatong Stadium recently, as a great success. This school netball and soccer tournament saw Sebokeng, Boipatong and Sharpeville schools battling it out for honours with Jet Nteo Secondary School and El Shaddai Secondary School emerging as the winners. Jet Nteo Secondary School won the netball while El Shaddai Secondary School were crowned the champions of soccer. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Nkonyana says this year’s event was much more successful in comparison to

last year, taking into consideration that they included other schools from areas such as Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark and Sharpeville. He says the tournament is part of mass participation, encouraging learners to participate in sports. “I was happy with this year’s tournament success because we managed to invite schools from outside and this shows that the tournament is growing by lips and bounds. “I wish to thank the Department of Sports and Recreation and ABI for making this tournament a success. I also wish to thank the Boipatong people and school principals for accepting our invitation,” says Nkonyana.
