SEBOKENG. - A nine-year-old boy’s life hangs in the balance after he apparently suffered a brutal assault from two ‘nyaope’ smokers who beat him up for a R10 note. The ‘nyaope boys’ were allegedly short of money for their next fix. The young boy had been sent by his grandmother to go and buy a loaf of bread at the Usave Shoprite store in Zone 11. On his way he met the two boys who took the money from him and then beat him up. Angry Zone 11 residents went in search of the perpetrators after they were alerted by the family about how badly the young boy had been assaulted. The family apparently spent the night at the Levai Mbatha Clinic in Evaton where they found medical help for the young boy who according to a family member, was urinating blood. A search started at the Zone 11 Stadium, which is known to be a common hangout for ‘nyaope’ users and spread out around the area in a hunt for the suspects. The first boy was caught and heavily disciplined by angry community members. They demanded to know the whereabouts of his accomplice. Community members say: “Nyaope smokers are a big problem for us. Week in and week out something goes missing from our yards. This is something we have to deal with. At the moment we don’t have taps and now they almost took a young boy’s life,” Sebokeng Police arrived on the scene and took the boy into custody. They also advised that the mother of the victim open a case on behalf of the victim as he is a minor. Warrant officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkhulu confirms that a suspect was taken into custody and that a case of assault is being investigated against him. * Nyaope is said to be a mixture of Anti Retrovirals, Rattex and Cocaine which drug users use to get high.

Gunman on the run
Missing pensioner sought

EVATON. - A case of attempted murder has been opened by the Evaton Police after police engaged in a shootout on Sunday night at Evaton, Cheapside. Apparently police were patrolling the area after they were tipped off by anonymous persons that there were people wandering around the area, and that they were armed. They subsequently encountered the suspects, who wasted no time in opening fire on them. “We were forced to fight back,” says Police spokesperson Constable Tshifiwa Mitileni.

Apparently the suspects just opened fire when the police approached, and they had to take cover and retaliate by returning fire. One suspect was arrested during the shootout and one remains at large. Police managed to recover the gun with live bullets after one suspect threw it away while on the run. The arrested suspect was taken into police custody. The suspect was arrested while his family, neighbours and friends gathered to witness his walk of shame. Mitileni says they are investigating a case of attempted murder.

Prof Isma & Mama Sarah Enemies Came To Confess to Me After many years of unhappy marriage, living in pain everyday. Pastors were praying for me but no difference. Another day I heard from Radio & in news papers that there is a professor, who helped my friend’s son, he was addicted to drugs, I started to attend to him, he checks by using water in a bowl and mirror. After only one week my enemies came to me to confess, is when I saw my husband’s girlfriend in the mirror. I can thank the professor by telling people about his good job.

SEBOKENG.- The family of a Sebokeng, Zone 6 extension 5 pensioner is having sleepless nights after their 70-year-old loved one went missing recently. According to a member of the family, Josephine Sithole went missing on July 11 from her son’s house in Residensia at around 14:30. The family requests members of the community who might know her whereabouts to inform them. “She was wearing a blue ‘seshweshwe’ skirt, a grey polo neck, and grey and pink Reebok sneakers. She was spotted at New Village (Lengoeleng near Zone 10) on July 14 at around 15:30 and that was the last trace we have had of her,” says a family member. Members of the community are requested to call 0732125783 or 083 294 1449 with information that they might have on the disappearance of Sithole.

Decade loan hit orphans Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG.- Maria Dlamini, a 33-yearold woman, has come to face the toughest days of her life following her parents’ death. Her family home in Zone 3, Sebokeng, was apparently sold at an auction without her knowledge. Following her parents’ death Dlamini had to take care of her siblings but now she faces life on the streets. An estate agent apparently just showed up and told her that she needs to move out as the house has new owners. According to the agent, Dlamini’s father had taken a loan with a bank decades ago which is alleged to have leveraged with the house. “There are no records of the loan and Maria Dlamini was born and raised in this house, yet she has discovered that it was sold at an auction while she and her sib lings were still living in it following their parents’ death. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.
the bank that took over the loan that the agent says my father owed. How did our house get on an auction without the records of the loan?” says the furious and frustrated Dlamini. Dlamini and her siblings have since been kicked out. When Sedibeng Ster visited the house there was furniture inside and renovations were taking place. Efforts to get comment from the estate agent were futile. “There is no way that these children will lose their family home like this. We need proof and all the necessary documents about this house and the loan that they are talking about,” says Majwalane Mohapi a member of the community. Apparently Dlamini tried to get the local councillor to help without any success. “We need help! Please! As we speak the water bills are already in the supposed new owners’ name. Please help us! Where will we go?” asks a distrught Dlamini.

SEBOKENG. - Willington Bafana Mbongo, is a 26-year-old man who used to live a normal life. Today he sits in a wheelchair that cannot even take him to the nearby shops. Mbongo has a condition called ‘Urethri Strictur’ which causes him to be wheelchair-bound. “I was unable to urinate for two or three days so I decided to visit my doctor. To my surprise it was a serious condition. I think they said my urine pipes were blocked (Urethri Strictur),” explains Mbongo with anger on his face. Mbongo was then admitted and scheduled for an operation in Kroonstad. After the operation he was transferred to Bloemfontein Hospital where they declared that the first operation had been faulty and should not have been done.
“I was taken back to Kroonstad for a second operation due to a ‘supripubic catheter’ that had come out. I had no idea what was happening but never thought it could be this bad. Ever since, I have not made any contact with the ground. I was given a wheelchair,” says Mbongo, knocking his head on the doorframe in frustration. Another 5 operations left him even more helpless. Mbongo has lost everythinghis wife, his house, money, car and his dignity. “I lost who I was, I have lost my being. I am sitting in a wheelchair with a condition that is ruining my life. There is nothing more painful than that. I have been rejected by different hospitals. They have all refused me and won’t help. All I need is help to walk again,” says Mbongo as he breaks down in tears.

New structure for party
Not only in 67 minutes!
Mduduzi Mathebula
SEDIBENG. - After decades of political dictatorship of the Pan Africanist Congress, branches in Sedibeng finally elected the regional leadership of their choice. The PAC last had a properly constituted regional congress in 2003. The newly elected structure consists of the following candidates - branch leaders that have represented the movement of the Pan Africanist Congress for years. Chairperson and Deputy are
Lerato Serero News Editor Comments
‘Ha re lekane rese meno,’ this is a Sotho idiom that is mostly used when one wants to say in a simple way that we are not equals. Not in age, not in health nor even in wealth. During the same time last year I was bombarded with calls of people asking me and the team to attend their functions that they have organised for ‘goodwill,’ all in the name of the 67 minutes. I turned most of them down, as most if not all were publicity stunts or for self-promotion. This past week I discovered that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This year was no different with calls coming in left, right and centre, all from people who wanted to ‘do something’ for the needy. Perhaps you have been successful in life but each and every day some of us discover that there are more and more people that are in dire straits and need help. The sad reality is that you did them no favour to come up with donations for only 67 minutes in a year. In the last couple of days I had a shocking revelation: The very same people that were making these ‘generous’ donations were talking about the people that they were donating to, as if they were some kind of project or a duty that needed to be ticked off the list. These ‘generous’ organisations chatted about them as if they were filthy beings that needed pity - well for 67 minutes at least. The 67 minutes day is over and I know that most of you have already forgotten about the people you ‘helped’ by shoving a towel or a tin of food in their hands while forging a smile for the camera. Take time to think, reflect and decide that the change that you wanted to make last week should be done daily and not for you, your company or whoever, but for those in real need. I have learned never to pretend in life but to do things as they should be done and I believe all human beings need to do that. So for once, go out and give with love, not only for 67 minutes but for 365 days a year. I propose to discuss this no further but to remind you that ‘Ha re lekane rese meno,’ so do unto others as you would wish them to do unto you, not only in 67 minutes but throughout your life. Lerato...
Ndade Mxunya and Monamudi Motse from Sebokeng, while on the other hand the Secretary and Deputy were Ngithi Sula and Mathuso Maloka, both from Sharpeville. According to the chairperson elect Mxunya, the mandate was given to the newly appointed structure to save the people. Mxunaya further elaborated on the programme of action that drives them. “The elected leadership will be embarking on the auditing of PAC branches in Sedibeng.

SDM does its part on Mandela Day Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- The Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM), its Local Municipality, Lesedi, in partnership with the Sedibeng FET college in Heidelberg, joined the rest of South Africa to perform its 67 minutes of community service to mark the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela last Thursday. For SDM mayor Simon Mofokeng, and Lesedi Mayor Lerato Maloka and both of their Mayoral committee members, this day started early when they visited pensioner Tebello Mapontsho Tabo who celebrated her 103rd birthday, on this day in Zone 6, Sebokeng. This was followed by various acts of services at Shalom Children Ministries for abandoned children. Activities on the day included donations of groceries, cleaning and painting of
premises, laundry and general maintenance. The Department of Social Services joined the event in educating the children at the Shalom Ministries on health care, issuing of birth certificates and access to child grants. Later in the day, at a formal gathering, guests and volunteers were addressed by Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration, Ayanda Dlodlo. In her speech she appealed to those who attended to act on corrupt activities, as they are robbing the communities of their services. The occasion was marked by an announcement of the opening of another Sedibeng FET College in Evaton. SDM Executive Mayor Simon and MMC Gomba greet 103yearold Tebello Mantsho Tabo in Zone 6, Sebokeng du ring the celebrations of Mandela Day last Thursday.

EVATON. - A fun filled day took place when Sedibeng Ster collaborated with Drum Magazine to visit two special homes. These were Katlehong Home for the Physically and Mentally Disabled, which houses 14 children, and Tshepong Children’s Home, which houses 25 kids. This was on Mandela Day. Katlehong Home owner Maggie Lebele says, “I would like to thank all the sponsors that made this day possible. Thanks for all the groceries and the blankets. We are really grateful for this day and we truly see it as a blessing.” The kids were delighted to have been treated to jumping castles, good music and some celebrity appearances. The children were really excited when ELM (Emfuleni Local Municipality) Mayor Greta Hlongwane paid a suprise visit, escorted by the popular Vaal Commando ‘Bikers.’ In her speech Hlongwane said it was a privilege for her to be able to see the kids and she thanked God for the opportunity. VANDERBIJILPARK. - The spirit of giving reigned all over the Vaal as charity events took place at every corner and people geared up to do their bit for 67 minutes on Mandela Day. The Sedibeng Ster team also rolled up its collective sleeves and took time out to help the needy in the community when they visited the Mathwala Children’s Home. The home houses orphaned kids and those that are in need of shelter, and provides care to them. The owner, Elizabeth Thwala - popularly know as ‘Mathwala’-
was delighted to see people who had come to offer a helping hand. “I am very grateful to the people of Sedibeng Ster for blessing us with their presence and for the groceries that they have donated to us on this special day.” Mathwala added that Christmas does not come every day for the children she houses in her home as times are often tough. Sedibeng Ster news editor Lerato Serero says: “Children are a blessing and should be treated as such. There is nothing more beautiful than to see a child smile. “We thank God for this opportunity and may there be more days such as this.”
ESA spreads its wings countrywide Moleboheng Chaha
SEDIBENG. - Vaal-founded organisation Educate South Africa (ESA) pledged to give its 67 minutes on Mandela Day to creating awareness and conciousness towards the importance of education. ESA headed to Limpopo where a career fare aimed at giving career guidance to young people. “Limpopo’s education has been reported to be in a very poor state. We have always focused on improving the standard of education in the Vaal and our aim now is to contribute to other regions,” says a founder, Tumelo Moilwa. ESA has also
in the past collaborated with the Department of Education in a tutoring programme that aims to help young scholars improve their matric results. The organisation also collaborates with companies to help open the eyes of the youth to the kinds of professions that are available in all the relevant fields. “There are many careers out there that people are not exposed to, so what we do as ESA is that we bring relevant professionals to tertiary faculties, to give light to those who would like to go into that profession,” concludes Moilwa.
Hand in Children Care Centre blessed by SAB Vaal Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - Hand in Children Care Centre was blessed by 67 minutes of community service from Vereeniging SAB Deb on Thursday when the nation and the world celebrated the birth of Nelson Rholihlahla Madiba Mandela. The centre was established in 2000 by strong-woman Sylvia Songelwa who is a mute. The old lady has been a blessing to the children she has taken in over the past decade. Songelwa has altogether 16 children and adults that she looks after. They were placed in her care through Social Services and Police. The children are orphans and abandoned children. Speaking to the SAB Vaal Maloti District HR, Tshegofatso Moroosele, she says they wanted to play their part in giving back to the com-
munity. They heard about the centre through community help. “Since the nation and the entire world is celebrating Mandela Day, we felt that we also had to do our bit. Hand in Children Care Centre was a blessing to us. During our first visit to the centre we found that there were plenty that we could do to help them,” says Moroosele. SAB dedicated the full day to painting all the walls of the centre and fixing problems they had with their electricity. They also fixed up the garden, the roof, and gave clothes and blankets to the children. “We provided the children with stationery to use as tools toward their education,” says Moroosele. Songelwa accommodated everybody with a smile, while her heart swelled with joy and happiness.

Donate blood SANBS
Lazarus Dithagiso
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Current blood stock is at a critical level, says Vanessa Raju of the SA National Blood Services (SANBS). The SANBS urges members of the public to make every day Mandela Day by becoming regular blood donors. “Your blood is vital in helping to change the lives of those who are dependent on blood transfusions for their survival,” says Raju. He adds that they are experiencing ‘low harvests’ due to school and university holidays as well as the cold weather conditions. As the country geared up to do something to make a difference in the lives of others on Mandela Day, July 18, SANBS encouraged the public to get involved in donating
blood. Collection dropped drastically recently, resulting in a daily average of about 1.7 days of blood supply being available. This is far less than the 5 day stock required to ensure that the country’s demand for safe blood is met. SANBS needs to collect 3000 units a day to meet the demand. This charitable act can save up to three lives and the difference could be made every 56 days instead of just once per year, said Raju. The standards required to be a donor is to be aged between 16 and 65, to weigh more than 50kg, be in good health and live a sexually safe lifestyle. To find out more about the nearest donor centre, call 0800 11 9031. The centres operate until 18:00 in July. SEBOKENG.- It was formerly known as Age in Action Old Age Home but since April 2013 it has been converted to Sebokeng Old Age Home with the new management and board of directors. On the Thursday while the world celebrated Nelson Mandela’s birthday, prominent people from around the region visited the senior citizens at the home. Sedibeng ABSA branches visited the Sebokeng Old Age Home with the purpose of bringing joy to the residents. They were
also accompanied by the members of the African National Congress (ANC) in Sedibeng. The home received blankets from these stakeholders and they were also served food on the day. Dalene Pretorius, the new manager says she was overwhelmed by the visit and she will cherish it forever. “The visit was a special moment for us. Senior citizens love to see other people as this makes them feel loved and appreciated,” says Pretorius. She further gave thanks to everyone who pledged their time to make the day possible.
Usindiso gives back Mduduzi Mathehula
EVATON. - Usindiso Community Centre from Evaton West gave back to the community on Friday when they donated food parcels to the needy. According to centre manager Loria Motloung, as the community development sector they had a mandate to feed the poor, which obligated them to run a programme that benefits the community. “We started the project where we look for families that live under the breadline. Thirty Evaton West families were identified. These families will receive food parcels from the Food Bank in association with Social Development,” says Motloung. She adds that this is their first initiative
to give back to the community in the form of health-related issues. They are going to work tirelessly to make a difference. The Food Bank lived up to its promises and they delivered food parcels to the community. Numerous families allocated by the field social workers were present to receive the food. These families joyfully received the food. “We are delighted to have brought joy into other people’s lives. We hope to continue helping the community in any way,” says Motloung. Elizabeth Ngwenya, a beneficiary, says she is happy that her child has something to eat. “Thanks to Usindiso and may God continue granting you more blessings to help others,” says Ngwenya.

A stress free tax season SEDIBENG. - The tax season is upon us and the aim of tax manager at Legal & Tax Johan Swart is to ensure that the process is a smooth and swift one for all taxpayers. Filing for the 2013 tax year began on July 1 and will end on November 22. This tax year covers March 1 of 2012 to February 28 of 2013. Swart says honesty is the name of the game. “It is illegal to lie on your return by inflating your expenses or not declaring your correct income. The random audits performed by the SA Revenue Service (SARS) is accompanied by severe penalties for false declarations on tax returns.” Swart states that starting as soon as possible can save one a lot of work as filing income tax can cause a lot of stress
and heartache. “If you are due a refund, the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll get your money. And if you have underestimated your tax contribution, you may be able to save substantially on penalties and interest payable if you submit early,” adds Swart. Taxpayers are encouraged to use eFiling as the South African Revenue Services (SARS) efiling service is convenient, secure and easy to use. One can file seven days a week, 24 hours per day with no problem. Another advantage is that eFiling submissions have until November 22 to submit returns while manual filing whether by post or the SARS drop-box requires all the documentation to be in by September 27. Swart urges taxpayers to have all supporting documents ready, to have on hand to file and to produce them if SARS asks for them
in an audit such as the IRP5 tax certificate from the employer, a medical aid scheme income tax certificate, a list and the receipts of medical expenses not covered by your medical aid scheme, a tax certificate for your contributions towards a retirement annuity fund and a detailed logbook specifying your business trips and travel costs for the period SARS has tried to make life easy for the taxpayer by simplifying the paperwork and process of paying tax, but tax affairs can still be complicated. “Contact the SARS call centre on 0800 00 7277 (0800 00 SARS) or consult a tax expert to ensure you do your return correctly the first time rather than risk getting something wrong.” *Johan Swart is a tax manager at Legal & Tax. sasol gas engine power plant
South Africa’s first gas-fired power plant fully operational Sasol inaugurated the gas engine power plant at its Sasolburg site on 10 July 2013. The facility, known as the Sasol Gas Engine Power Plant, or SGEPP, is the largest power plant, using gas engines, ever installed in South Africa and has an operating capacity of 140 megawatts (MW).
The power plant was completed three months ahead of schedule and almost 20% below budget. Although 500 jobs were created during construction, the new facility brought 44 permanent jobs to Sasolburg. “This is a very successful project for Sasol New Energy, below budget and ahead of schedule. Indeed an excellent result from Wärtsilä, Foster Wheeler, Sasol Technology and all other contractors,” said Henri

sasol employees contribute their 67 minutes to mandela day 18 July 2013 marked the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela and the fourth Nelson Mandela International Day. Sasol employees joined the rest of the world and contributed their time towards people in need. Over the years Sasol has been taking part in the global movement of Mandela day to give recognition and to give back to our Metsimaholo communities. Nelson Mandela International Day aims to inspire a ripple of good deeds throughout the world and looks to encourage individuals, communities, governments and non-profit organisations to take one small step towards the larger leap of making a positive impact. Sasol chose Tsatsi Primary School in Zamdela and Môredou Old Age Home in Sasolburg where employees went to spend their 67 minutes towards making a difference in our community. The Sasol volunteers didn’t mind getting a bit of paint on their hands as they painted palisades and buildings at the two venues. But it wasn’t all work. Learners at Tsatsi Primary received party packs, while the residents of Môredou were treated to a delicious potjiekos meal.
