Hellish fire kills Khaulelo Mduduzi Mathebula

BOIPATONG. – Young Isaac Khaulelo Hanyane (25) was burned beyond recognition in the early hours of Sunday morning just a few minutes after his arrival at his place of residence. Hanyane was at a party at a friend’s home in Vanderbijlpark where the friend lived with his family. Hanyane met his death in his rented shack in Boipatong where he lived with his mother. According to a survivor who shared the shack with the deceased, he heard him coming and he could tell he was drunk; this was at about 04:00am. “Just 30 minutes later, I heard him screaming and there was fire. I had to escape. I found my way out in a really bad condition - nauseated and dizzy from the smoke. A neighbour came to help but we failed to rescue Hanyane, who was trapped in the shack.” A few minutes later the community managed to break into the

shack after the fire had subsided, but Hanyane had already been burned to ashes. His mother Evalinah Hanyane, who was trying to be strong for her only son, passed out during an interview with Sedibeng Ster. She told Sedibeng Ster that her son’s horrific death was unbearable. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my son burned beyond recognition. He was lying there dead. All I could see were his legs,” said a tearful Evalinah. Regional secretary of the Congress of the People (COPE) Ishmael Hashatsi said they are deeply affected by the death of the young lion, who was promising in the struggle against poverty and for his loyalty to the COPE. “As a party we call on the business community in and around the Vaal to provide any support and assistance of whatever nature to the bereaved family toward burial costs. We wish to convey our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased,” says Hashatsi. Police detectives are investigating the cause of the fire. Constable Thembeka Koago says an inquest has been opened.

Popcru not very popular with Brigadier

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Much to the embarrassment of Vanderbijlpark station commander Brigadier Themba Denge - in full view of the public - a drama played itself out when a dozen Popcru officials confronted and tried to arrest him. The Commander was on his way to attend a meeting on June 24. The situation nearly swung out of control, turning ugly when Brig Denge pulled out and cocked his firearm in his car. This was as he made to leave the station and was approached by Popcru. Regional Popcru chairperson, Nkosinathi Ndwandwe said Police wanted to arrest Brig

Denge after he had ‘dodged’ a pending threemonth case of fraud. ‘Brig Denge resisted arrest by - especially - threatening Popcru with a firearm,’ said Ndwandwe. Ndwandwe could not explain to Sedibeng Ster whether a warrant of arrest had been issued by the Magistrates Court. After Brig Denge had left, Popcru went to open a case of intimidation and resisting arrest, he said. ‘We will continue to challenge any injustice in the workplace. No-one is above the law.’ Some of Denge’s lieutenant-colonels said that, not long ago, he had appeared in front of a Magistrate for assault. He was acquitted of all charges, some-

thing that did not sit well with Popcru. He would never bow out easily despite threats, they said. Before the matter could be laid to rest forever, he was awarded another case of intimidation. The Provincial Corporation Communication, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, has confirmed that a case of fraud against Brig Denge is under investigation. The nature of allegations will decide whether to make an arrest or discuss the case with the Director of Public Prosecution for a decision whether to prosecute in the first place. Expelled police officer evicted from house he has paid for ten years Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. – An expelled police officer’s hard work was shamefully demolished as his house was sold at auction without him knowing. Former police officer Johannes Mbulelo Makwa was thrown out of his ten-year paidup house on Thursday by Police and the estate agency that claimed to have bought the house.

Former police officer Makwa was thrown out of this house by the estate agency and a group of people hired by it. Emotions rose as Makwa’s neighbour overboiled with anger at seeing his neighbour being thrown out of his house like a dog. But things didn’t go well with Makwa. He was dismally defeated by the group. Makwa explains that after he was suspended from work he reported his situation to the bank. He will pay off the house as soon as he receives a lump sum he can prove he is expecting. Apparently his situation was not compelling enough for the bank to secure his house, so it was put on auction and sold, according to Makwa. Sedibeng Ster was called to the chaotic scene. The agent could not say a word to media. However, the agent’s or consumer-attorney’s numbers were written on the eviction documents and Sedibeng Ster managed to speak to the attorney, Lawrence Melato. Melato says crucial measures need to be looked at when members of the community buy houses. However, his client had bought the house on auction and the procedures were indicated to the Makwas before the eviction.

BOIPATONG.- The 21st anniversary of the Boipatong Massacre was recently held at the Boipatong Community Hall led by Councillor Mmakgomo Raikane, Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for SRACH & Public Safety. The aim of the event was to remember the controversy of what actually happened in relation to the Boipatong Massacre during the night and early hours of the morning of June 17 of 1992. The Boipatong Massacre caused the ANC to pull out of negotiations of CODESA at the time so that they only resumed negotiations after the Bisho Massacre on September 7 of 1992 where, again, the homeland forces were

utilised by the National Party Government to attempt to break down the momentum and tide of change which was to usher in Democracy. A criminal trial was held in 1993 here in the Vaal where 120 testimonies of Boipatong community members clearly placed members of the IFP and supporters at the Massacre of June 17 of 1992, having come from the KwaMadala Hostel of Iscor at the time. They were convicted of their crimes based on these testimonies. The Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC) of 1998 found Police complicit in the raid of the Boipatong Massacre; however, this was refuted by the Truth and Reconciliation Committee Amnesty hearings in 2000 due to a lack of substantial evidence. The 46 people who died on that fateful night and many others who were maimed and injured, left many residents and the people of Sedibeng and the world traumatised. Executive Mayor Councillor Mahole Simon Mofokeng says, “As we pay homage today to the fallen heroes and heroines of this bloody atrocity we declare that once the Memorial Centre is completed that the Sedibeng District Municipality - or its future entity of the Vaal River Metropolis - will continue in its pursuit to find justice for the memory of the Boipatong Massacre victims. “I would also like to acknowledge the role played by the leadership of Bana Ba Modimo and of the Khulumane Support Group over the years.”

SEBOKENG. - Alleged failure of ELM (Emfuleni Local Municipality) to solve Ward 36’s rates and taxes problem still leaves a bitter taste in the many mouths of Zone10 community members. Residents claim to have waited three years for the rates and taxes billing problem to be solved. In a meeting held on Sunday at Mohaladitwe Secondary School in Zone 10, residents claimed to have seen suspicious people roaming the streets taking pictures of houses in Zone 10. As a result community members fear that the municipality will seize their houses for the money they have refused to pay, claiming that the current billing system used by the municipality is inaccurate. According to a member of the Ward 36 committee, the problem goes back to 2010. “We have tried and failed many times to have this matter resolved by ELM, which is why we have escalated the matter to the province where we now await a response.” Community members added that many other people were faced with the “Masakhane problem” and urged them to come forward. ELM spokesperson Klaas Mofomme says, “No-one is going to lose their houses for failure to pay. “That is totally against the law. We urge anyone who has a problem with their billing to come and state their case at the ELM accounts office. Accounts will be recalculated and any miscalculations that may have occured will be reversed.” Another problem that came out at the meeting was the high crime rate faced by Sebokeng residents. After the attempted rape of a security guard at Mohaladitwe, Ward 36 collaborated with wards 34 and 35 and pledged to fight crime with the help of the Sebokeng SAPS. “We plan to arrange a meeting with the Sector manager of Police where we will devise ways to rid our society of crime,” states a Ward 36 committe member who also says that perpetrators will feel the full might of the law.

Sedibeng region is like a terminal patient left with days to live but who still thinks he could survive. This is a region that has a rich political, academic and sporting history. But more recently this region - once respected for the calibre of great men and women it produced - has become a boozing playground for those in power. Yet we don’t see any problem with this because we are scared to be victimised for telling the truth. This is the naked truth about the state of politics in this region. They are now drinking your votes! Power has gone to the heads of political leaders in this region, yet we don’t see anything wrong with this. It’s okay for our leaders to drink in public because they think they have the right to do so. They drink in public because no-one will tell them anything different. This region used to have very respected political leaders who respected those who voted them into power. But not anymore! Recently there have been some disturbing incidents, with Sedibeng District Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng being arrested for apparently drinking and driving. This is not the first time that Mofokeng has been involved in a ‘boozing drama.’ The point here is not only about the Mayor but about the fact that the region has lost its morale. Boozing has taken centre-stage in our community. If the Mayor can be found drunk in public then there is little hope that our youth will survive this temptation. Sedibeng has become the region that destroys its youth. What message are we sending these leaders of tomorrow? Are we telling them that to be a leader you must drink in public? What does it mean when political leaders make headlines for all the wrong reasons. What about those who voted for them? This region needs to go back to the time when leaders used to respect those who voted for them. We need to go back to when this region produced men and women who respect themselves regardless of their positions. We need to go back to when the media was not afraid to expose leaders who abuse their political powers. We need to go back to when the community would not tolerate boozing in our society. Let’s go back to the days when this region used to be respected by outside countries because of its rich history - especially its political history. News editor Lerato Serero is on leave and will be back after two weeks.

Caring for the disadvantaged Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLARK. - Children are a gift from God and ageing is a blessing. Etlhokomeleng Child Minders Association made a visit to two different NGOs on Saturday where they visited Vuku Zenzele Old Age Home and The Matwala’s Children’s Home. The visits made it crystal clear to these

organisations that the association cares for them. According to the association spokesperson, Eunice Mateki, the key reason for the visit to these NGOs was to enhance the level of care to the people. “We appreciate what these centres do for children and elders. It is very important to look after your disadvantaged children and ageing people. Because the-

se children are the presidents, lawyers, and doctors of the future,” says Mateki. Gladys Lekhakha, founder of association, says she had seen how people live in dire conditions. The community turns its back on them. “I felt that as a community we have a responsibility to give back to the community with our time. We have a responsibility to

help and assist those who are disadvantaged in life,” says Lekhakha. She adds that the initiative to visit these NGOs is to show them that we care for and love them. Apparently the association spends time with senior citizens from Vuku Zenkele Old Age Home and later on they spend time with the children of Matwala’s Home.

Boom, Boom, Pow! Out with the ‘tsotsis’!

Regional secretary Bob Mthembu says they will soon be obliged to bring back operation ‘Wanya Tsotsi’ if drug dealers are not dealt with. Photo: Mduduzi Mathe bula

SEBOKENG. - ‘Games against Crime,’ an event organised by the ANC and the Bob Matsobane branch in Zone 12 on Saturday morning, included the operation ‘Wanya Tsotsi’ and a march from Zone 11 Park to the Zone 12 soccer grounds.

A1RGI0Q

The games were a success due to the collaboration of the Sebokeng SAPS and different stakeholders, including the ‘Toughest Young Minds.’ The march was orchestrated strictly to alert the community about crime and drug abuse. ANC regional secretary Bob Mthembu emphasised the issue of crime and drugs af-

flicting the community during his speech. He made it clear that during the 80s and 90s criminals had less freedom because the community was firmly tilted against criminality. “That is why we are bringing back operation ‘Wanya Tsotsi.’ This is a wake-up call to all the law-brea-

kers; we are on your tails,” said Mthembu. Further harsh messages against crime and drugs came from other stakeholders. Sebokeng SAPS also came up strongly against the drugs and crime that are crippling the community and destroying young people and their future. Mthembu further says they will drive drugs out of the community and they will do it by force. The games were a success with the community and all stakeholders enjoying the day as part of the June 16 celebration.

carl bosch and pichler roads reopened on 21 june 2013 Carl Bosch and Pichler roads reopened after extensive construction work was done on the intersection at the Sasol Truck Stop. The intersection was completely rebuilt and a traffic circle was added to improve traffic flow in the area. The construction of the road was vastly improved to reduce the amount of maintenance previously needed, primarily due to drainage problems in the area. An additional advantage to the reopening is the reduction in traffic congestion at the Fountain Circle in Eric Louw Road during peak hours that has now also returned to normal.

Sasol is repairing roads in the Sasolburg area as part of its infrastructure development programme as the roads in the area were originally built to accommodate normal civil traffic rather than heavy vehicles. With years of use by large vehicles frequenting the Sasolburg industrial sites, these roads have deteriorated to a state of disrepair that requires reconstruction rather than repair. Some of the other major road rebuilding projects completed through the infrastructure upgrading project include the southern entrance to Zamdela, Pichler Road in front of the Sasol Truck Stop and resealing of a large section of Klasie Havenga Road. Extensive pothole repairs were also done in high traffic volume areas. Sasol, in collaboration with the local and provincial authorities, are considering to repair more roads in the area that are also in desperate need of attention.

Lekoa hosted Heroes Loyal to ‘friends’ or Cross Country league loyal to football? Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - Lekoa Athletics Club hosted a Heroes Cross Country League at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium over the weekend. This was in dedication to yesteryear champions such as Hosia Tjela, Titus Mamabolo, Matthews Temane, Stephen Morake, Ernest Tjela, Ernest Seleke and Xolile Yawa, to mention but a few. The local runners came in numbers to participate in this annual event. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Ncala says the

race was to honour those fallen heroes who contributed to the development of athletics in this country. “These are people who contributed to the growth of athletics in this country. They need to be honoured for their contribution. “If it wasn’t for them I don’t think athletics would be the same in this country. They were very passionate about sport and money was never an issue to them. They ran for the love of the sport,” says Ncala.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale It is no longer a secret. Just like the wall of Jericho, the Emfuleni Local Football Association is falling apart. Shooting From the Hip is quite aware that the teams intend to get rid of the current executive committee under the leadership of Bushy Nale and replace them with an interim committee. In fact, this is long overdue because the development of football is suffering in this region because of incompetent leadership. This is the problem when we vote in people who don’t have a clue when the development of football is concerned. Shooting From The Hip can’t wait to see the backs of some of the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s executive committee. They were a pain in my neck because I don’t remember them doing anything for our football since they were voted into power. This is an opportunity for the teams to elect the right people to serve on that committee. My advice for the teams is: when you vote don’t use your sentiments, use your brain – your football brain. Look, I’m not a big fan of Irvin Khoza, but after the man was removed as Safa vice president, our football suffered. I know some people will disagree with

Shooting From The Hip but under Irvin Khoza Safa was a much more organised organisation. Love or hate him, Khoza is a true leader who isn’t scared of making unpopular decisions. Look what he does for PSL! This league is one of the best in the world, thanks to Bra Irvin as his colleagues and friends call him. The man turned our football around and the results are there for everyone to see. My exact point is that this region needs someone like Irvin Khoza, who will make unpopular decisions. The problem with our local football in this region is that they are only concerned with positions. They want to see themselves working at Safa national office but they failed right here at home. As you read this, there are people who are busy running around, campaigning to be elected to the national office. These are the people who destroyed our football but they are so sure they can represent this region at national office. It is not about football - as far as they’re concerned. For them, it’s about them! The sad thing is that they use some of the development coaches to do their dirty work and convince their colleagues that they are the right people to run football. Right people my foot! We must stop voting for our friends, who know nothing about football. This is the reason why Emfuleni Local Football Association is falling apart, because we elect our idiotfriends to run our football. Lastly, to development coaches; guys, let’s make our football more interesting by doing the right thing. Winning at all cost is not part of this beautiful game. Let’s get educated as far as football is concerned!

Sport at its best

Bring it home Nale MMC of Sports and Recreation Sedibeng Ster News office

SEDIBENG. - All roads will lead to Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park in Johannesburg for the much anticipated Gauteng Sports Award on Saturday. This annual award is hosted by Gauteng MEC of Sports and Recreation Lebohang Maile to honour sportsmen and women for their respective achievements. Veteran Sedibeng Ster newspaper writer Zacharia “Zakes” Nale has been nominated along with SABC’s Soccer Laduma presenter Kwena Moabelo and Times Media’s Kgomotso Sethuntsha in the Journalist of The Year category. Nale has since received a flood of messages from the people of Sedibeng wishing him good luck. Some high profilers who congratulated Nale for being nominated for Gauteng Sports Awards is the Emfuleni Local Municipality’s MMC for Sports and Recreation, Shaka Radebe. Speaking during the Eindhoven Appreciation Dinner, Radebe was confident that Nale would would bring the award home. “I want

to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Nale for being nominated for the Gauteng Sports Award and I have no doubt that you will bring the honour home. We as Emfuleni Local Municipality are very proud of you because you will be representing Sedibeng,” said Radebe. ELM Executive Mayor Greta Hlongwane also took the opportunity to congratulate Nale on his nomination. Former soccer great Simon “Bull” Lehoko also wishes Nale good luck. Lehoko says this is a great achievement, not only for Nale but for Sedibeng. He also acknowledges Nale’s contribution in the development of sports, especially football in this region. “I’m not surprised by his nomination because the man has been extremely vocal when it comes to the development of sports in this region. He saw it all and what I like about him is that he is humble and very respectful. He is eager to learn and he always comes to me for advice. Today he is running a successful football academy. I wish him best of luck,” he concludes.

Like father like son Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - No doubt Lawrence “Chippa” Lekoelea is following in his father’s footsteps. This 14-year-old gifted, left-foot, mesmerised both opponents and soccer fans with his dazzling skills during the Sedibeng East

District Winter Ball Games Championship held at Cecil Oldridge Park Stadium last Saturday. The boy reminds many of his father Steve “Chippa” Lekoelea who played for Orlando Pirates. Just like his father, Lawrence, some of the unbelievable ballcontrol possessed by him, left his markers sprawling on the field. He was marvellous to watch, turning his markers into toys, much to the delight of the soccer fans. He was instrumental in the soccer team of his school -Katleho-Impumelelo Secondary - who won the championship. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, this shy youngster says his ambition is to play for Orlando Pirates’ senior team. He was with Pirates development before their structure was discarded due to agecheating. “Many people say I play like my father and this makes me proud because he was one of the best players this country produced. He always encouraged me to work hard if I wanted to follow in his foot-steps,” he says. When Sedi beng Ster Sports contacted Lekoelea senior for comment, he said he was aware that his father was gifted. “Before I saw him, many people told me that he plays exactly like me and I went to watch him. I did not believe my eyes but at the same time I was very proud of him. Even Pirates development director Augusto Palacious was overwhelmed by his talent,” he concludes. Lawrence "Chippa" Lekoe lea is following in his father’s footsteps. Photo: Zacharia Nale.
