Grandfather (123) still strong Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG.- One of the oldest persons alive in the world is right here amongst us in the Vaal. Nchaupe Gert Mahlong (123) was honoured with a certificate of appreciation by Ward 37 Councillor Lahliwe Rapapadi in Zone 7 last Wednesday. Rapapadi says it is a great privilege to be next to such a great person. “Learning from the old is a very huge privilege.
Such people have walked the very same ways we are still striving to reach. As the Nangalembe Ward (Ward 37) we want to honour this old man,” says Rapapadi. Mahlong was born in the Free State in 1890 on New Year’s Day. According to the family, the old timer used to work at a bakery in Vereeniging. He was blessed with seven children who increased his family to 27 grandchildren who increased to 30 greatgrandchildren. Mahlong says eating well
and respecting elders is the reason he has lived so long without sickness. “I am a very healthy man, my eyesight is the only thing that is giving me problems,” says Mahlong. A family member, Merriam Mokonyana, says Mahlong is a very humble and loving person. “I think the principle of fearing God has kept him around for so long,” says Mokonyana. Mahlong was honoured with a certificate presented by the Councillor and her Ward Committee members.

SEBOKENG. - A mystery blaze at a creche in Zone 13 has shocked the community and even more so members of staff. According to staffer Motlatsi Majoe, Friday was just a normal day but turned sour when he received a call from a community
member who alerted him that the building of Motlatsi Creche was burning down. “What has happened is really terrible because now the children are the ones who are going to suffer the most,” says Majoe, adding that the creche accommodates 130 children. While Police suspect that the fire resulted
from an electrical fault, Majoe says he suspects foul play as some eyewitnesses saw three young boys run from the building shortly before it burned down. Majoe’s concern is that the creche cannot afford the necessary renovations as most of the equipment has burned. “We almost lost
3
everything in that fire; now our plea is that members of the community or different stakeholders help us to do the renovations of the facility. The kids have nowhere to go and some parents can’t instantly arrange to take their kids elsewhere.” Majoe concludes.
Photos: A suspicious fire at the Motlatsi Creche facility in Zone 13 has left over a hundred kids without a place to go.

SEBOKENG. - Dealing in dagga is illegal and anyone found in posession of it will be dealt with. Through a tip-off from members of the public police arrested a 42-year-old woman in possession of dagga with an estimated street-value of R100 000. The dagga’s weight was 25,290kg said. Police arrived at the suspected house
in Lebombo Section at Kwa-Masiza Hostel on August 1. They asked the owner to allow a search of the house whereon they came upon two big bags full of dagga. No further illegal substance was found during the search, said Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu. The woman faces a charge of possession of dagga and is expected to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court soon.

SEBOKENG. - A Zone 11 woman has been arrested and charged with murder after she apparently hit her boyfriend with an empty wine glass recently. According to a community member the two had a turbulent relationship and had been arguing over alcohol-related matters on the day of the incident. The couple were coming from a nearby drinking hole in the area when an argument ensued which resulted in the woman hitting her partner with the glass on the left ear. The woman then left the man lying on the ground.

South Africa is turning into a country of themed months, we have just come out of the ‘Mandela’ Month, we are into ‘Women’s’ Month going to the ‘Spring’ Month. My focus today however is on this month which celebrates the women of this country, wealthy or poor, black and white. As we celebrate Womens history Month, we pay tribute to their lives and to the lives of countless other women who have made great sacrifices, embarked upon meaningful endeavours, and torn down historic barriers of prejudice. There is a saying that , ‘study the past if you would like to define the future’. As women pioneer the future it is imperative that we study the incredible women of our past. I know that many of us have our own individual story to tell of women that have made a personal difference in our lives, those that have helped us reach the greatest of heights
Students should keep debate alive Mantashe Retha Fitchat
VANDERBIJLPARK. - “There must be a paradigm shift in and among the liberation formations at universities. They must reorient themselves from being forces of resistance to forces of change and transformation.” This was said by ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe on Friday when he addressed students at the North West University (Vaal Campus) on the topic ‘Education as a site of struggle.’ He said at campus level, SASCO and the Progressive Youth Alliance should take up daily issues of students and should lead them in their fight against injustice. “This is advocacy for militancy and not anarchy,” he said. He said students must be supported when they demand free education for those studying for their first degree. “Access to education, with greater emphasis
in our lives, and those that have been there through thick and thin. I was quite touched when one of the women leaders in this region at a function recently quoted the seven secrets of a strong and confident woman from a book that she had read. I was touched because these indeed define women as I have come to know them. The quotes, she said are as follows: A strong and confident woman knows that she is loved, She refuses to live in fear, She is positive, She recovers from setbacks, She avoids comparison, She takes action, and lastly She does not live in ‘if only’ or ‘what if’. The younger generation could take a leaf from the older and perhaps follow these basic but yet powerful and constructive words. I personally have a strong bunch of women that have been there and continue to be there for me in times of need. As we celebrate this Women’s Month let us not forget the efforts that women put into everything that they do, the love that they give, the support that they dish out to those in need and having said all this mine is to simply conclude by saying Happy Women’s Day to all Women out there and may you continue to be the pillar that you are in the lives of many. on access for children from poor households, should remain your priority.” He said it is heartening that the number of graduates who graduated in 2012 is double that of those who graduated in 1995. “It is this progress in education that translates into the black middle class growing by 250% over the last ten years.” In his opinion the teaching of history as a compulsory subject should be supported. “This will help our young people develop a spirit of patriotism. Any nation that does not know where it comes from is like a tree without roots.” He emphasized that it is the duty of the Progressive Student Movement to ensure that students participate in current debates. “You, as students, are responsible for keeping alive the debate on the transformation of the Potchefstroom campus. You must ensure that it being a lily white campus is on your agenda.”

Charlotte Maxeke’s life celebrated
Mduduzi Mathebula
EVATON. – Nearly 10 000 women gathered at Wilberforce Community College in Evaton in honour of veteran woman of strength Charlotte Maxeke on Sunday. ANC Women’s League conducted the event and its president Angie Motshega gave a very powerful keynote address to the women. She rebuked the tendency of women to live through men they depend on. “Young women should start looking for role models. It’s about time you take control of your future. “These are days where we will handgrab the baton we have taken from the likes of Charlotte, Lillian Ngoyi, Albertina Luthuli and others,” says Motshega. She added that all these icons were very educated. “Teenage pregnancy, drugs, HIV - these are common matters that are destroying our families and our young people these days,” said Motshega when addressing the masses. Other
profound words came from Deputy Chairperson of the ANC Women’s League Dr Gwen Ramogosi who told the masses that it is important that older women of the league teach the young generation ways of being dignified like Charlotte and others. She also added that women should be proud to
be the pride of the nation, quoting from a popular phrase - “You teach a woman, you teach
a nation, but you teach a man, you teach an individual”.

Nedbank donates soccer kit
Lloyd Zwane
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Nedbank put a smile on the faces of learners of Phehello Primary School when this giant personal loan bank recently donated a full soccer kit to the school. The handing over took place at Nedbank’s Vaal Walk Mall with the community coming in big numbers to witness the official launch of the branch. The launch of the new Nedbank Personal Loan branch in the Vaal region was a success. Community members of Vanderbijlpark were entertained by exciting competitions. The area was really packed. People came from all over Vanderbijlpark and joined with Nedbank that day; even those who were passing-by couldn’t keep their eyes off the event. Prizes were up for grabs as Nedbank hosted a competition in which community members had to participate in the table-soccer competition. Winners of the competition walked away with soccer T-shirts, but not just any soccer
T-shirts; we’re talking about the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns soccer T-shirts that were given to the winners. The first programme of the launch started off with the organisers of the Nedbank Personal Loans branch briefing those who attended the launch about the idea and reason why they brought the branch to the people of Vanderbijlpark. The last important programme of the day was when Nedbank announced its handover of the soccer kit to the principal of Phehello Primary School accompanied by his learners. “As a bank for all, we understand that youth and community development is vital in our quest to continue making banking more accessible to all in South Africa. We look forward to partnering with the local and business communities of Vanderbijlpark to ‘Make Things Happen,’ concluded Rudd.

ORANGE FARM. - Local boxers will trade blows when the Soweto Development Association stages a Boxing Development Tournament scheduled to take place at Extension 2 on August 24. This mouth-watering news was broken to Sedibeng Ster Sport by organisation chairman Morena Tsotetsi. Tsotetsi says this much-anticipated tournament will see all the divisions pitted against each other for honour. He says the tournament is part of boxing development in the area. All the local clubs and boxers are invited to take part in this development tournament. Tsotetsi says the tournament is also part of the boxing revival in the Orange Farm area. He believes that boxing is dead in the area and something urgent must be done to bring it back. “Look, boxing is one sport that plays an important part in community - just like soccer. This tournament is part of our development programme. We want to produce another Baby Jakes Matlaba ... There is a serious need to revive this sport here. We as the Soweto Development Association made a commitment to develop sport in this country. We can’t fold our arms when boxing is dying in this country. We
will make sure we produce another household name in South African boxing,’ says Tsotetsi. Meanwhile, Tsotetsi appeals to the Orange Farm community to come in numbers to support the initiative. He also challenges Local Business to come on board to make this tournament a success.

ELFA’s new committee

SEBOKENG. - History was made when the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s (ELFA’s) Promotion teams got rid of the current organisation’s executive committee and replaced it with an interim committee. This process took place at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng’s Zone 14 recently. Philip Ndlovu was elected committee chairman with veteran administrator Phiki Khumalo becoming his deputy. The teams’ decision to get rid of the current executive committee followed the ELFA failing to convene a special general meeting within seven days as requested by the teams. All Promotion League teams were represented in this historical meeting. The teams’ representatives say the “axed” executive committee members were only concerned with positions at Safa national office and not with developing football in Sedibeng. Apparently the teams or clubs had had
enough with the way things have been happening at the Emfuleni Local Football Association with some organisation officials only interested in becoming Safa Sedibeng president. The teams voted for Ndlovu unopposed, based on his efforts, which saw that football was played in Emfuleni, especially Promotion League. The teams felt that Ndlovu is the right man for the position and took into account his passion for football. He will be the chairman of the association until the next Annual General Meeting, AGM. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, man-ofthe-moment Ndlovu says he was overwhelmed by the teams’ commitment to take football forward in this region. “I’m grateful to the teams for showing enough confidence in me to put me in charge of this committee. I promise them I will do my level best to revive the junior soccer league, which is my first priority.” he concludes.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale “Never measure your success by other people’s success.” Shooting From The Hip directs this message to all development coaches in this region. It baffles one to see how development coaches will go out of their way to pick other teams’ players just to win tournaments or competitions. Winning at all cost! This is a common practice in this region among development coaches. Even schools are involved in this propaganda! But the question Shooting From The Hip

Cheat at your own risk! asks is - how long will development coaches continue to be successful by cheating? Shooting From The Hip is witnessing a situation in which some teams and schools win all tournaments - just because they pick other schools or teams’ players. Shooting From The Hip recently heard a development coach from one of the biggest teams in this country wanting to know if their players took part in the Makgotamishe Soccer Tournament held in Sharpeville. Mind you, these are players who are contracted to the club and they take a risk playing without their team’s approval. Some can dismiss this, saying, “What is wrong if players want to keep themselves busy du-
ring the off season or when their respective teams don’t play? The fact of the matter is that it is wrong for those players to play without their team’s approval. At the same time, it is very annoying to see these development coaches being proud for winning this township tournament, when knowing full well that half of the team was not his. Cheating! This is not an attack on anybody – but this also contributes to the standard of football in this region. These coaches give us false hope, they encourage us to think they are good coaches or have good players when, in reality, they dont. It is not good for coaches to exchange players just because they want to do other coaches a favour
by helping them ‘win’ the tournament. This is the result of needing to win at all cost! Stemming from this is a problem in which, as is too frequently the case, money comes first, always coming before the development of football. Measuring our success against other people’s is not part of this beautiful game – football. Shooting From The Hip doesn’t think great coaches in this world did the same while they were coaching at grassroots level. If development coaches continue doing this they will go nowhere as coaches. They will be stuck in grassroots football for the better part of their football careers! Gentlemen, cheat at your own risk!

SHARPEVILLE. - While some businesses and companies are roundly accused of disinterest in the development of sport in this region, the same can’t be said of Sefateng-Deeprooted. The four schools that participated in this tournament were Thuto-Lore, Lekoa-Shandu, Mohloli and Isizwe-Sechaba Secondary Schools.
