Local ANC man kidnapped in Pakistan
Carla du Plessis
MEYERTON. - “Without him I am nothing. I just want to hear his voice and know he is safe,” are the words of Emel Ali, wife of Arshad Ali (37) who was apparently kidnapped in Pakistan last week. Ali is a well known businessman and owner of Ali Supermarket, chairman of ANC Meyerton as well as being involved in various charity projects. Sedibeng Ster reported earlier this month that Arshad Ali and members of the Muslim community donated to hundreds of Sicelo residents as part of their ‘Christmas’ celebration known as Waqus. Before the tragedy befell him, Arshad was on his way to fetch his mother from his land of birth -
Abu Dhabi - so she could visit him and his family in South Africa for which she’d obtained a visa earlier this year. Eyewitness News reported on Sunday about his kidnapping and from there news of his plight spread like a veldfire. According to a letter sent to the Departement of International Affairs, Arshad, his mother and his brother were on their way to the Lahor’s Allama Aqbal International Airport to come back to South Africa when they were stopped at a road-block some 40-kilometres away from the airport. The roadblock was manned, amongst others, by the Pakistani Anti Terrorist and Smuggling Unit. While Ali’s vehicle was being searched, four men in a white twin-cab bakkie ordered Arshad’s brother to hand himself over to them. Why his brother obeyed, however, is unknown. Fa-

mily members are very shocked by his disappearance. “This case enjoys a lot of attention from the government and consular services will be rendered,” said Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the Departement of International Affairs and Co-operation. By Tuesday there had still been no news of Arshad’s kidnapping and the kidnappers have also still not made contact with the family to say what they want. According to a report there is considerable speculation over Arshad’s disappearance with some saying that he was not kidnapped, but arrested by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), described as Pakistan’s most

His wife Emel also said that, before he left, he hugged her and his two children - Muhammed Zunaid (8) and Aziz Arshad (2) and his last words to her over the telephone urged her to take good care of the children and take them to school. “My children ask me every day when their father is coming home,” she says. The mother is struggling to deal with the situation. Monyela yesterday told Sedibeng Ster that there had been no fresh word in connection with the case. 100 years of steel production
Mduduzi Mathebula
VEREENIGING. - ArcelorMittal South Africa, Africa’s largest steel producer, is pleased to announce that its Vereeniging Plant has reached a significant milestone as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Steelmaking operations at the Vereeniging plant commenced a century ago with a 10 tonne furnace, producing roughly 4 000 tonnes of pig-iron steel between 1913 and 1920. The Vereeniging Works is the country’s major supplier of speciality steel products, seamless tube and forge products. Almost 500 000 tonnes of final product is produced per year, of which some 32% of steel is distributed to offshore markets. This place was officially turned into a museum on celebration 100 years. Sedibeng District Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng was amongst the dignitaries who were part of the official opening and celebration including the Nonkululeko NyembeziHeita CEO of ArcelorMittal and former workers. The Vereeniging Plant plays an economic role in the region and South Africa. He further
says the overall growth strategy and in the steel manufacturer’s ability to continue contributing immensely to local economic growth and job creation in South Africa. The CEO Nyembezi- Heita says the company is extremely proud to have reached this milestone considering the many challenges and obstacles that South Africa and ArcelorMittal South Africa have faced over the last century. Some of these challenges include two world wars, the Great Depression in the 1930s, countless economic difficulties and several recessions. “In the long term, we will continue with our robust growth and retention strategy to develop positively as a company and we look forward to celebrating another 100 years of success for the Vereeniging plant,” says Nyembezi-Heita before she opened the museum. BOPHELONG.- Four murder suspects were arrested recently barely an hour after they allegedly stabbed a man to death and injured his brother-in-law. Quick response from the Vanderbijlpark SAPS members and their relentless efforts to trace the suspects led to the arrest. It is alleged that the deceased, David Ndou and his brother-in-law, Sphiwe Mbongwe were stabbed by the four suspects with beer bottles at about 23:00 after an alleged argument in Extension 14, Bophelong. The deceased was stabbed in the stomach and his brother-in-law in his upper body. The deceased passed away on the way to the hospital and the brother-in-law is still in hospital. Police say that the arrest is in line with the mission and vision of the Vanderbijlpark SAPS in order to secure the quick arrest of suspects and bringing them to justice. Illegal building under electricity cables Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - A foreign tuck shop owner’s building is waiting to be demolished by the building inspector of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. This time, the owner might not escape with a slap on the wrist as he allegedly makes a habit of erecting buildings right under Eskom electricity cables. To make matters worse, the shop is also apparently built over sewerage pipes that run across the road and lead to the Mandela Square Shopping Complex. The building inspector paid him a visit and apparently ordered him to close down his business.
The owner apparently ignored the warning. After that the inspector instructed him to close down by the end of last month. Should the business be found operating, he will face the might of the law. Sedibeng Ster visited the building and it was operating as usual last week. An official says it was built without a letter of approval. Emfuleni spokesperson Klaas Mofomme says that no structure with a roof is supposed to be built over water-pipes or electricity cables. This transgresses the Building Act and breaks the law. The owner could not be reached at the time of going to print.
Hopping on one leg, is one of the striking municipal employees outside Emfuleni Local Municipality main building offices. They are baying for the head of the Deputy Municipal Manager, Ben Mahlangu, demanding his dismissal after he apparently hired a private company to deliver waste management services at an estimated cost of R2920 per day. When going to print the union and management were locked in a meeting about the matter. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso. a1s59v0

Sedibeng Ster recently reported on the escalating problem of `nyaope’ addiction in Sebokeng. In one report, Mrs Cecilia Mokone was quoted as saying that “police officers are not doing their work and they are of no help when cases are reported to them”. Mrs Mokone says she was misquoted by Sedibeng Ster. “I never said the police are not doing their job. In fact they have helped me on numerous occasions when I reported a problem.” Sedibeng Ster would like to apologise for misquoting Mrs Mokone.

ted this one to be different, to challenge the silent voices and by the reaction that I have received so far I believe that I am doing just that: reviving public debate. Some coloumnists like to focus only on politics, economy and education but I want to engage and advise the poorest of the poor and I believe I am doing just that. I have never said that I am a motivator, a specialist on issues of life nor a preacher. I am simply telling it as it is. Like a school calendar the year is divided into terms and as the calendar shows, we are entering the last term. I’d like to think that as people we have a right to differ. Being different means that we are not afraid to
challenge the norm and during this last term I am going to do just that. Everyone is born different but through the years we work very hard to be someone else. We conform to society’s so called ‘common-sense’ but unfortunately common sense is not necessarily always good sense. Chart your own course and destiny and by so doing grow into the person that you are meant to be, not what someone wants myou to be. SEBOKENG. - They are the stars in a TV show that depicts them doing things that are wrong and good. Ultimately, they are human beings and members of society affected by everything that affects it. They are Ntokozo ‘Chester’ Msibi and Innocent ‘Bobo’ Masuku. Residensia Secondary School and Tshemedi Primary School were the very privileged schools that received these TV stars on Friday. The organiser of this event was ILTAM which is made up if a group of young people: Siyabonga Mhlongo, Ishmael Bokoane and Setchaba Hlatshwayo, who are venturing to better educate the learners about drug abuse. Residensia Secondary School learners were the first to host these actors from Zola, Soweto. Msibi was straight and crystal clear to the learners that between him and ‘Cheste’r

they are two different people with different ambitions. “What I do in TV is a job,I get paid to depict the character as a source of entertainment and education. What is illustrated by Chester is that crime does not pay,” says Msibi. Learners and teachers were thrilled by the actors by the way the duet passed their story to them. Mhlongo from ILTAM says, “It is very important that young people see acting as an entertainment platform and a career to many.” Masuku - known as Bobo - was the masses’ favourite. “I do my job wholeheartedly. I love what I do. I was once an addict and victim of alcohol abuse and drugs. I took and decision to stop,” said Masuku recounting some of his history. He concluded by advising that one should ask: “Who am I - and get the inner answer and not the diluted one.”

SEBOKENG. - Vaal University of Technology B Tech Public Relations students in conjunction with the ‘Made in the Vaal’ NPO organised a matric day motivational session on five different Saturdays. The event was held at Moqhaka Secondary School. Learners were bombed with words of wisdom by young motivators, who were once students. According to the organising committee of the event, the mission was to build a credible and reliable organisation with a strong and loyal membership of youth who will lead the way in making a difference in the community in all spheres and aspects of life. Learners were told to use the power of collective acceleration and continually told that education is power. It was also sugge-
sted that many things impede youth development, addressing the importance of education, you, the region, and negatives. “Drug abuse, lack of role models, lack of career guidance and most of them (role models) do not recognise the value of education. Teenage pregnancy is also a serious problem that continues to affect students,” Tshepo Thekiso said. Lecturer Simon Mohlokoane, peer counsellor Leo Melusihela and other motivational speakers expressed their thoughts on education and decision-making. Motsamai Lehoko, chairperson of ‘Made in the Vaal’, says they want to reach about 200 matriculants with motivational sessions, to relieve the 200 matriculants from academic stress before the matric final examinations.

EVATON. – A 42-year-old woman Dikeledi Serathi disclosed her emotionally abusive life story on Wednesday at the People Opposing Women Abuse ( POWA) launch at Evaton West (Beverly Hills). Serathi’s 21 years of marriage means nothing but emotional pain to her as she was a princess, but was turned into an object for the past 13 years. “ I was so emotionally and physically abused by my husband. I had to be bold and leave him before he killed me.” These are the words spoken by the brave and recovering Serathi during the POWA launch in Evaton West. The satellite office was long overdue according to POWA Executive Director Nonhlanhla Mokwena. The office was officially opened by AVON, which bought the house and sponsored it to be used as the
office. AVON PR Vicky Saunders-Flaherty (Internal Communication and Corporate Affairs Manager) and Mokwena were very delighted to establish such a powerful office from which women can speak out. Mokwena was very positive about women taking a stand in their society and helping one another. She strongly said women should break the silence. “We from the society are kept as objects, and babymakers, without saying a word. We have normalised abuse and it has desensitised our boy-children who learn from their fathers,” explained Mokwena to masses that attended the launch. The event was embraced by mostly women. It was said that the office will exist as a service centre for the community, and the community should make use of its services toward a better society.

SEDIBENG.- A group of fire fighters and medical crew involved in a bus accident rescue operation in Meyerton was announced as the winner of the Centrum Guardian Project 2013 at a prestigious awards ceremony held at Emperor’s Palace recently. The Team Focus group (including fire fighters from the Meyerton Fire Station and medical personnel from ER24, Gauteng Emergency Medical Services, Netcare 911 and Vaal Emergency Ambulance Services) was called to a bus accident in the early hours of a winter morning. An intense, six-hour operation left seasoned rescuers saddened when 19 people died and 53 were injured in an accident that nobody – crews, family members and all of South Africa – wish to see repeated. Rescuers used every bit of stamina, training and apparatus at their disposal to save lives and deal quickly with injuries. Team Focus has won R10 000
in prize money from Centrum that will be divided amongst the individuals in the team. In addition, the team’s base stations have won R35 000 from Centrum, R15 000 from One Lady and a Tribe and R10 000 from Enkosi Agency plus proceeds from SMS votes. This means that the base stations have won a grand total of R61 009 in prize money. The remaining finalist teams each received R2 500 from Centrum and each person received a six month supply of Centrum. This year, for the first time since the project’s inception, an independent panel was assembled to give their input into the selection of the winner. The panel was asked to watch the finalist episodes from the Centrum Guardians 2013 TV show and then rate the 8 finalists in order from most favourite to least favourite, based on which finalist most inspired each panel member. These scores contributed 50% of each finalist’s voting tally.

SHARPEVILLE. - More than 300 drum majorettes marched the streets of Sharpeville over the weekend. Ten primary schools under the Sedibeng East Education Department in Sharpeville came together to initiate a programme that aims to protect children from rape, physical mistreatment, drugs and other forms of abuse. The programme aims to get girl children involved in activities such as sports and drum majorettes on weekends to keep them away from any kind of negativity that might have a bad bearing on their futures. The principal of Matsie Steyn Primary School Majane Nhlapo says a state of emergency in this region has called for program-
mes like these to be initiated all over the region and for the community to come together in the protection of young kids. “In these times we see our children suffering at the hands of perpetrators who do not think about their actions or how they impact on young children. So we as educators and facilitators have come up with a plan to combat the situation,” says Nhlapo. She also states that the sustainability of this initiative is not only dependent on the educators but also on parents and the community as a whole. “Today’s event was a huge success. We as educators hope that the Sharpeville community will help us create awareness for the future of our children,” Nhlapo concludes.

SHARPEVILLE. - South African National Deaf Association (SANDA) will launch a new branch in this region called the Lekoa Vaal Deaf Association. Vaal branch manager Josias Matlakeng, who learnt sign language at the age of 11, says that the centre aims to bridge the gap between the community and those who are deaf, blind and disabled. “Deaf people in particular face many difficulties in their daily lives. The problem lies with the fact that the deaf can not communicate with their families in a way they can understand and, as a result, they end up being isolated from the rest of the community.” Matlakeng says his passion for this comes from the fact that he grew up around deaf people. “I learnt sign language at a very young age. I helped out a couple that stayed Photo: Josias Matlakeng says that SANDA will launch the Lekoa Vaal Deaf Associati on to help bridge the gap between the com munity and the deaf and disabled. next to my parents’ house and that is how I taught myself the language,” he says. While the new centre will be a haven for the deaf, it will also be a training centre for community members who are interested in learning sign language. Matlakeng states that his main focus will be to equip those that work in services - nurses and policemen - with the skills to engage with the deaf through sign language. The launch will be held at the new SANDA office in Sharpeville. Interested individuals should contact Matlakeng on 076 683 4415/082 676 0680.

VEREENIGING. - Angelic Brides hosted a high tea at the Inyama Grill House in Three Rivers this past weekend to showcase their bridal dresses. Co-owned by sisters Sibongile Lehloo and Bonani Tsotetsi, Angelic Brides aims to make planning a wedding smooth by providing services such as invites, photography and wedding planning on top of selling the beautiful wedding gowns they are slowly becoming famous for. The theme of the event was ‘Something old, Something new, Something borrowed and Something blue.’ All those who adhered to the theme looked as fabulous as a bride should look. Lehloo says, “This is our inaugural high tea function that will take place annually.
Our main aim is to always put the bride and her needs first.” In attendance was also Dineo Mogatosi who won the grand prize consisting of a wedding gown worth R6 000, as well as makeup, nails and a hairdo for her dream wedding that will take place on December 14 this year. “I was so excited when I heard that I had been selected as the winner of such a big prize. SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale Now that Bafana “Wafana Wafana” Bafana failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, everyone talks about the need for development of football in this country. How convenient! Shooting From The Hip’s unending plea about the lack of development in this region/ country has forever fallen on deaf ears. Now that we have failed, every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they qualify to talk about development. Last week Wednesday my colleague,
SEDIBENG STER

Football is not charity Mduduzi Mathebula, sent me a message, asking me to listen to Metro FM Sports when they interviewed Danny Jordaan regarding the development of football in this country. I then asked my colleague, “Who is Danny Jordaan?” Not because I don’t know who Jordaan is, but because he has been quiet and absent for 20 years and now he comes out and tells us what needs to be done as far as the development of football is concerned in this country. Why now? It doesn’t mean that if Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the WC that everyone has the right to tell us there is a serious need for the
development of football in this country. This includes Danny Jordaan. We all know what the problem is! The interview was nothing but part of an election campaign to say the least. We can’t be used by people who are after positions. The problem with our football started after 1996 but our football administrators were blind to this. We were too excited about winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and forgot that the key to the success of any nation’s football is development. The focus was only on Bafana Bafana and we overlooked the junior national soccer teams. If Shooting From The Hip may ask: When was the last
time that you saw or heard u/17, u/20 and u/23 national soccer teams play? Shooting From The Hip even forgets who our junior national teams coaches are. These forthcoming Safa elections have overshadowed our most serious challenge, which is development – the subject that has been there for the past 20 years. Danny Jordaan and other football administrators have long failed us regarding the development of football in this country. They are still boasting about bringing the 2010 World Cup to this country. My message to those football administrators is that our football is not a charity. Nor will it ever be!

VOB FC claims another scalp Zacharia Nale
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vereeniging Old Boys once again demonstrated that their win against top-of-the log Sebokeng Ajax FC was no ‘fluke.’ They did this by beating title contender - Nale Academy 1-0 in the entertaining Promotion League match at the Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. The spirited Roshnee-based side came in this game with high confidence after beating Ajax last Sunday. As expected, the game started on a high note with both sides attacking one another from all angles. The game was worth watching with the local spectators coming in numbers to witness this top-ofthe-table encounter. Right: Vereeniging Old Boys FC continued with their fine form when they claimed another scalp, beating title contenders Nale Academy 1 0 in the enter taining Promotion League match at Shakspeare Stadium on Saturday. Photo: Zacharia Nale.
The game went to interval with the scoreboard reading 0 0. It was the same story in the second half with both sides continuing to miss clear-cut chances in front of goals. The drama unfolded when the referee awarded VOB FC a penalty. However, the Nale Academy keeper made a brilliant save to deny the visitors a lead. All hell broke loose when the referee awarded the visitors another penalty and this time VOB FC defender converted it, much to the delight of their fans, who came in big numbers. The VOB FC win brings them back into the title race. It was an ugly scene after the game when the referee wanted to assault the home team’s players when they questioned him on his decision to award the visitors what seemed to be a controversial penalty. Meanwhile, after suffering a defeat last weekend, Sebokeng Ajax redeemed themselves when they beat Vaal Stars FC 3-0 in another Promotion League match.
Emfuleni Expo u/17 tournament takes off Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - Jomo Cosmos aka ‘Ezinkosi’s’ u/17 will feature in the Emfuleni Local Municipality Expo u/17 Soccer Tournament scheduled to take place at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. This two-day development soccer tournament will see Cosmos youth pitted against local soccer teams including the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Stream A and B squads. This eight-teams tournament will be played in a round robin system with the two top teams in both streams meeting in the semi-finals.
The tournament is part of the municipality’s support for the growth of football in this region. The Emfuleni Local Municipality Senior Sports Control Officer Professor Sebeela says preparations are in advanced stages. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sebeela says that as a municipality, they try to help as much as they can with sports in this region. He says he is looking forward to seeing the best talent on display. “I want to thank all the representatives of the teams for their commitment to making this tournament a success. In December this time
around we invited the squads, schools and PSL development teams. The Emfuleni Stream A squad will be coached by Tebello Kheswa with Lehlohonolo Mashore, his assistant coach, Tsimo Motsepe (technical adviser), Ntswaki Thinane (administrator) Zacharia Nale (team manager) while Stream A team is coached by Themba Dlimini with Moratehi “Shusha” Mnguni as his assistant and Master Zondo, team manager. Both Stream A and B will play a practice match on Wednesday as part of the preparation for the tournament.
Both streams’ coaches are satisfied with the teams they have assembled for the tournament. “Our boys are ready for the tournament and I’m happy with the support of the teams and the chairman of the association,” says Kheswa. His sentiment was echoed by his counterpart in Stream B squad, Dlamini, who is also unbeaten, ahead of the tournament. Meanwhile, Sedibeng Ster Sports has learned that the municipality has also invited the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits. However, these two giants demanded too much money.
