VANDEBIJLPARK. - ‘You can run but you can’t hide’. A police chase that took approximately 30 minutes from Vereeniging ended in the Vanderbijlpark CBD when police nailed a drug-dealer still in possession of drugs and a lump sum of money on Tuesday afternoon. The success of the police came through a community tip-off. The dealer was apparently about to make a delivery in Vereeniging when the police K9 Unit was tipped off and the dangerous chase commenced. At first, the ruthless

suspects tore away from Police. “We had to deploy other units - Sharpeville and Vanderbijlpark police were at liberty to clip the suspect’s speeding wings,” says Police spokesperson Constable Gertrude Makhale. Police say the suspect was in possession of an undisclosed sum of money, indicating that it was not his first drop when they were tipped off. “We found cocaine, heroin and Tik,” explains Makhale. The arrest shocked most motorists and shoppers, when police converged at high speed to

apprehend the suspect driving a VW Passat. According to Vereeniging community leader Bishop Abram Radebe, drugs have taken over in the area and its image has been entrenched by the dealers and sex workers. “We are not safe, our children are called names and these people are roaming around all over Vereeniging. They have taken over our place, this does not need prayers but the force of men,” says Radebe. The suspect appeared in court on Friday on charges of drug dealing and possession.

VEREENIGNG.- “The community has reduced Vereeniging to a place of of drugs and sex workers. Vereeniging is not a place where people can live anymore,” says a man of the cloth, Bishop Abram Radebe of the Work of Life Bible Church. Drugs recently made nati-

onal headlines when a young girl in Eldorado Park pleaded that the leadership of the country - President Jacob Zuma - respond to the spread of drugs in the area and the country. Zuma responded boldly to the place of hell and shame, following the young girl’s request. After the response, all areas were asked

to fight back by reporting drug dealers on a telephone line separate from their police stations. Vereeniging recently launched its crime and drug line this week through the leadership of Brigadier Pule Mokoena who is mandated by President Zuma. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says that due to the call

from the Presidential office the Vereeniging Cluster has been the talk of the town on the subject of drugs and sex workers. “We are pleading with the community to start trusting us and using the direct line for drug dealers and operators,” says Funda. The number is 016 450 2666,

DE-DEUR. -Light started to shine over the roofs of the foreign refugees after the Waqas Charity Organisation (WCO) from Vereeniging were touched following an article that appeared in Sedibeng Ster (Refugees in dilemma, 28 August 3 September) Sheik Nuaman, head of the organisation, said they could not fold their arms while other nationalities were struggling to make ends meet. “After reading the article, we saw it was important that we visit the foreign community to find out how they make a living. It broke our hearts to see the community living without clean water, sanitation and in self- made plastic shacks and mud houses with one pit toilet used to cater for 42 familes,” says Nuaman. Nuaman says that thanks should go to the main sponsor, Yusuuf Dadabhay of Bublee soft drink who changed the lives of the poor communites. The refugees received

food parcels which included mealie meal, rice and Bublee drinks. Nuaman appeals to community members to open their hearts and offer any sort of assistance. With poverty written all over her face one of the refugees Pierre Harrimana, could not hide her excitement and the love shown by the charity organisation. She said they were disapponted after the African National Congress ward councillor, Sibongile Sebe together with her committee members came with a water tank. After speaking to them. Sebe told Sedibeng Ster that the refugees will be moved soon as the place does not have water and sanitation. She adds that the council assisted with water the tank after the nearby community complained that the refugees ‘steal’ water from from their yards. The refugees live in a ‘camp’ near DeDeur and are from various countries such as Zanzibar, Burundi and Uganda, They fled their war-ravaged countries.

Wedding wrecked by accident

SEBOKENG. – What should have been a wonderful day turned into a nightmare for a bridal couple on a Sunday afternoon when a vehicle carrying 5 people, including the bridesmaids overturned. This was on the Golden High way next to Boitumelo. The accident happened in a tragic instant and all celebrations ended abruptly. Tears flowed as family and friends rushed to the scene to watch their loved ones escorted to an emergency vehicle. There was no clear indication as to what led to the accident. However, bystanders claim that the wedding cars were swerving around the road as part of jubilation and excitement. Suddenly a car-tyre burst and the vehicle lost control and overturned. Police and emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, including Emfuleni Fire Rescue. On arrival, Sedibeng Ster found that the families of the couple were at the scene and in shock. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzikhulu Mthimkhulu could not respond to press enquiries at time of going to print.

I was quite thrilled by the legendary Ahmed Khathrada during his speech at the Annual Golden Key Thinkers Symposium of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg last week. My delight comes from seeing that the older generation still cares about the youth, unlike many that have given up on them and do not lend a helping hand. Khathrada excites me when he says that yo-

Across all racial line the ‘Born free’s’ seem to have forgotten this as they live a life of ‘I don’t care’. Khathrada excites me when in his speech he reminds the youth that segregation is gone but there are still challenges that haunt the society to this day, those include hunger, poverty, unemployment and disease, and that is where young people come in. people to educate themselves and to become skilled because South Africa has a shortage of skills and that the responsibility of young people is to take advantage of every opening that is there for them to qualify themselves because education is vital. Kathrada also says that youth need to realise that they have a responsibility now. “You must educate yourself to serve yourself, to serve your parents and to serve your country.” Contentment filled my heart when he mentioned that South Africa has made progress in terms of democracy and that the most important thing achieved so far is dignity as hu-

man beings but that new problems can not be solved by people complaining and that instead they must do something about it. I believe, as he does, that youth should take the opportunities that are before them to improve themselves not forgetting that there are democratic channels to bring the change to the country that they want to see. Lastly I could not agree with him more when he ends by saying: ‘Leaders do not live in a vacuum and are not necessarily born as leaders, leaders become leaders in certain circumstances’ Lerato...

The project is set to produce 250 houses of which 50 have already been allocated to people, but the problem is the fact that there are a number of houses which have been approved but still have not been allocated since March,” says a reliable source from within the community. What the residents want is transparency about the happenings of the project. “No RDP houses will be sold here, we have seen this happen far too many times in other places and we are not going to tolerate it here. “I would like the opportunity to fix things, we must not mix issues. The list that had been tampered with was sent back and now we are in possession of the original list. What is going to happen is that houses will be allocated using this list,” says community representative Titus Sefatsa who claimed that he would take the matter of transparency up with the Ward Councilor. Seisa says, “I do not have the powers to sell houses. I am an Emfuleni Local Municipality Councillor and the RDP project belongs to the Department of Housing and they will allocate houses and not me. I do not have the power to say that houses are ready as I am not an inspector.” Seisa states that people must understand that Residents demanded answers from community repre- things must go through the sentative Titus Sefatsa (left) who assured them that right channels, adding that people whose applications had been approved will get approved people will get their houses. houses. SEBOKENG.-The residents of SonderWater made it clear that they will not tolerate corruption in the RDP project currently underway in Ward 28. They are of the opinion that a project in their ward should benefit the people living in the area before it benefits ‘outsiders’. A heated meeting between the residents and the people overseeing the project revealed suspicions that some of the houses have already been sold to people outside Ward 28. The finger of suspicion was pointed at Ward 28 Councillor Madimabe Seisa who was not present at the meeting. Residents also claimed that Seisa had not been keeping them in the loop regarding the progress of the project. “There is a reason for our suspicion. A list of people that qualify to get houses was drafted, but suddenly names of the people

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Minister of Arts and Culture and also Chairperson of the African National Congress in Gauteng, Paul Mashatile, says that his party is the rightful vehicle to transform the economy of the country. Mashatile was addressing the business forum during the Gala Dinner hosted at the Riverside Hotel last week. “Transformation will never defeat us when we are working with the Business Forum. There are people struggling to get access to better shelter, and education and that’s why we want to see South Africa

in a good financial state and people getting better education, with less crime and in a caring society,” Mashatile says, adding that the DA will never defeat the ANC. “The ANC is well organised in Gauteng. ANC should never be shy to correct the wrong of the past,” says Mashatile. He lambasted at Democratic Alliance (DA) for a lack of a plan to govern the country and also encouraging the business forum to at least bring more than a hundred new members to register for the ANC. Mashatile ended by saying that they need votes to accelerate political power to change the life of the people for better.

The dawn of KKAAP Lazarus Dithagiso

DE DEUR. - Another new political party, Khoisan Kingdom and All People Party (KKAAP) is in Sedibeng region and will register to compete with the likes of the ANC, DA, Cope, IFP, APC, to mention but a few in next year’s general elections. The party still has to register with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The party made inroads when they adopted St Francis Care Foundation in De-Deur smallholdings recently. Jabu Radebe, acting president of the KKAAP, said they are not in politics to add numbers. “We are here to

change the lives of the people for the better,” he said. Radebe was speaking before they adopted the home that houses orphans. It was a big relief for the orphanage when the KKAAP installed a DSTV dish, renovated the building, provided food parcels, T-shirts of the party and clothing as well as all their basic needs. The KKAAP said they would never allow the children to go to bed on empty stomachs. Radebe said their main objective, is to bring back the lost dignity to the poorest of the poor who are the most marginalised community members.

Launch of libraries at Sedibeng College VEREENIGING. - Sedibeng College students and staff recently joined partner organisations from around Gauteng at the College’s Sebokeng Campus to celebrate the official launch of the new college libraries. Organised by the US State Department Fulbright ETAs, Mica Fidler and Ayushi Gummadi, who have worked to develop libraries at each Sedibeng campus since January, the event was a chance to celebrate the libraries’ development, encourage students to use their new resources and thank donors who made the libraries possible. Directed by student programme directors, France Koaho and Ntsheiseng Motaung, the program featured a performance by the talented Sebokeng Campus choir, a speech by Sedibeng College Principal

Dr Abe Mashele, who encouraged the students to treat the libraries as valuable learning spaces. The keynote speaker of the event was Fortiscue Helepi, a UCT graduate and successful chemical engineer at Sasol. He shared his foolproof formula for achieving your DREAM: Discipline, Respect, (learning from) Experience, Appreciation, and Motivation. As he stated in his speech, libraries are “theatres of dreams,” and his words will hopefully inspire students to engage with those theatres. Following his speech, the Fulbrights presented gifts to the partner organisations that made the libraries possible, including VUT Goldfields Library, Rotary International, and the US Consulate in Johannesburg. Sedibeng College

EVATON. – The Evaton branch of the Red Cross Federation ventured into the community to present a breakdown of their services on Wednesday. The huge number of community members crowded the Red Cross premises as per their invite. The visit was to teach the community on what the Red Cross stands for within the community, and how best the community members can utilise the services rendered to them. According the Red Cross members, people do not really know what they do. “We render services to the community, on social issues and health. VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vice Chancellor and principal of the Vaal University of Technolgy (VUT), Professor Irene Moutlana recently thanked lecturers for believing in the potential of the students. Speaking to the graduates, Moutlana advised them to think outside the box when they encounter obstacles. “Life is about choices that you make. As a university we can only do so much and the rest lies with the graduates,” she says. One of the key note speakers, Sedibeng District Municipality MMC for Stra-

tegic Planning and Economic Development, Maipato Tsokolibane, said that the country needs the graduates’ expertise and commitment. “The country needs disciplined and educated people like you, because education is the key to success,” she said. After five years of hard work it was time for the VUT students to reap what they have sown. We also offer counseling,” says Lebotha. The other services cited deals with orphans and vulnerable children. Nompi Maduna spoke strongly about such issues - children who had to head families while parents had passed on, while some had become orphans at an early age. Auxiliary worker Dikonelo Matsoso adds that they work with social workers on sociological matters that may have severe social implications. An opportunity was given to the community to ask questions to further understand more about Red Cross.

Emerald Resort & Casino ploughs back

Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - Emerald Resort & Casino has once again ploughed back into the community with their recent visit to Thabo-Vuyo Resource Center. Through its CSI Division the Emerald Foundation made donations to the centre in the form of gardening goods. Thabo-Vuyo cares for and teaches children with multiple intellectual disabilities in the Vaal Triangle. The learners of Thabo-Vuyo suffer from cerebral palsy, epilepsy, partial blindness and hearing problems. “This year we took a different direction and decided to donate trees, tables, benches and flowers to Thabo–Vuyo Resource Centre for intellectually disabled children in Sebokeng,” says Shirley Matlala, HR Executive at Emerald Resort & Casino. “The decision was prompted by the need to create awareness around Arbour Day by educating local children and the community about the importance of the environment. By spreading our outreach efforts to different cen-

Principal of Thabo-Vuyo, Hope Hlongwane, who is absolutely passionate about the development of kids with disabilities, expressed

her gratitude on behalf of the learners and school and the bright start of a relationship between Emerald Foundation and Thabo-Vuyo.

The ultimate fight against drug abuse

Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING.- Drug abuse and crime have become a norm in society. The ‘Ultimate Help’ with the community recently held an event dubbed ‘Sports, Arts and Culture against substance abuse and crime’ to create awareness within the community. The ‘Ultimate Help’ together with communities of De Deur, Lakeside and Bedworth Park have been involved in the fight against crime and substance abuse since 2011. Kgotso Khatile, a member of the organisation says, “We tackled the big problem that society is faced with through sports and cultural activities. We think the reason people use drugs and do crime is entirely because

they have nothing better to do. Boredom and drugs are definitely connected.” Khatile adds that the aim of the day was to get people involved in different activities such as soccer, netball and there were also performances of drum majorettes and drama. Another member of the organisation David Chaldin stated that he was once a victim of drug abuse. “The message that we are sending to young people is that they must stop using drugs because of the dire consequences it has on people’s lives,” concludes Chaldine, who states that ‘The Ultimate Help’ is dedicated to fighting the epidemic of drug-crime and substance abuse within the Sedibeng region.

The ‘Ultimate Help’ recently involved the community in different sporting and cultural activities in the fight to combat crime, drugs and substance abuse.

‘Information is power’ seminar

De Deur. - Kasi Corner Creative Concepts recently held the first annual woman-to-woman empowerment seminar with the concept ‘information is power’ as a way to help develop young girls. Speakers of the day all related how they succeeded in spite of the obstacles they faced while growing up. Nurse and entrepreneur, Diana Thaane, related the story of her success to the young girls who attended the seminar. Thaane told the girls how it had taken her 20 years before she attained her qualification and became a professional nurse. “It is possible for a girl child born and bred in a disadvantaged background to be successful. All you have to do is persevere through any difficulties you may come across. Education is the most important gift you can give to yourself. Go to school and get your education,” Thaane conclu-

ded. Another speaker of the day Boitumelo Makume who holds a Master’s degree in Science also emphasised the importance of young girls getting an education. “There are so many opportunities out there today and as a young person you don’t have an excuse for not getting your qualifications. There is so much one can gain from going to school. When a person is educated they are able to attain a higher level of thinking than those around them.” Thusi Motsamai and Thulane Radebe of Kasi Corner Creative Concepts state that there is a great need for empowerment from woman to woman. “Our aim today is to empower young girls to go out there and make things happen. There is a great need for professional women in our community and their upliftment starts with us.” Motsamai adds that the event will be held annually.

Great future for Motsepe

Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - Paul Tsimo Motsepe (32) is one of the up-and-coming knowledgeable coaches destined for a great future in coaching. Motsepe is one of the few local coaches who became armed with a Safa Level One Coaching Certificate in 2007. The course was conducted by Simon Ngomane and Contin Kubeka. Some of the notable names who were his class mates during the course include Doctor Khumalo, Shakes Kungwane, David Modise, Geelbooi Masango, Meshack Tsotetsi (late) and Thomas Madigage (late) to mention but a few. This pocket-sized Sharpeville-based development coach has some incredible knowledge when it comes to technical matters. Sedibeng Ster Sport had a heart-to-heart interview with Motsepe who believes that there is a serious need for local coaches to be empowered in this region. “I believe our coaches need to be empowered, especially those who work with youngsters in this region. I have realised that some of these boys need proper coaching so that they can grow and become better players. There are lots of youngsters with potential in this region. The only thing they need is good coaching and they can

play anywhere in the world,” says Motsepe. To date, his track record speaks for itself as he was appointed head coach of the now Vaal Football Association (VFA) regional team in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Motsepe is the manager/coach of Benfica FC from Sharpeville.

To whom it may concern

An open letter to all those who are involved in the development of football in this region, development coaches, administrators, parents, LFAs, to mention just few. Dear Sir/Madam, Yours Truly Shooting From The Hip was tasked with the responsibility to be the manager of the Emfuleni Local Association’s Stream A squad that participated at the Emfuleni Expo u/17 Tournament over the weekend. Shooting From The Hip will always cherish this opportunity to work with such a bunch of talented youngsters in this region, particularly the Emfuleni area. Working with these boys was something special taking into

consideration their individual brilliance. No doubt, most, if not all of them have bright futures ahead of them as far as football is concerned, but only if their mentors - in this case their coaches - at club level realise this. This brings Shooting From The Hip to the point that most of these youngsters don’t get: game-time at their respective clubs. In fact most of the players in Stream A squad don’t feature regularly in their team, especially those who play in Promotion League. The reason why these youngsters

don’t play is because now most of the teams prefer to field tried-and-tested players because they want to challenge for the league title. Some of these boys are left to rot on the bench. They lack game-time and engaging in the simple basics of football like passing and trapping, and now their confidence is low! Why are we kilWith ling such talented yoZacharia Nale ungsters in this region? Shooting From The Hip doesn’t blame these youngsters for lack of football basics but their coaches for

lack of vision. Now Shooting From The Hip understands the frustration of the national teams coaches’ experience. What Shooting From The Hip has seen of these youngsters is that some of them are not exposed to coaching and at this age they are supposed to be fully developed. The problem is that most development coaches are not interested in the development of these boys - their only concern is to win the league. What about these boys’ growth? How at this stage, or should I say, age, can a player not know how to pass a ball directly to his teammate? It is quite clear: the development coaches do not even give them basic training, which is relevant at this stage. Sir/Madam, our football needs a makeover in which we go back to basics not to the drawing board as is always the case when Bafana Bafana fails to qualify for major tournaments. Yours truly Shooting From The Hip

Sport at its best

Emerald Cup 2013 is here SEDIBENG.- The Emerald Cup, Africa’s richest horse race on sand, takes place on September 28 at the Vaal Race Course and gets even larger this year as an entire weekend of family entertainment is dedicated to this event. Emerald Resort and Casino Chief Executive Officer Martin Rice says, “The Emerald Cup is traditionally one of the biggest events on our packed annual calendar. It is an opportunity for us to get together socially with the people that make us who we are. This year sees the introduction of activities both on and off the racetrack throughout the weekend, including a host of entertainment and hospitality packages which have been arranged for the race day.” Starting on Friday September 27 on the Emerald Resort & Casino premises and continuing until Sunday, will be a dedicated fun park created to accompany the Emerald Cup. Activities and events such as gladiator jousting,

bungee trampolines, an inflatable climbing wall and the rock wall giant slide combo will be combined with an inflatable human bowling alley and carnival tents. Gates will be open between 10:00 and 17:00. Besides magnificent horse racing, picnic facilities, braai areas and onsite food options, race day/track side entertainment includes the musical talents of Mi Casa, CrashCarBurn and always a crowd pleaser - DJ Vin Deysel. According to Rice, the artists are specifically chosen to cater to a diverse crowd that attends the Emerald Cup. It is also a great opportunity to showcase some of the extraordinary musical talent that South Africa has to offer. One of the best ways to experience the racing is by taking advantage of the track side braai sites which offer the front row racing at very affordable rates. To book any of the hospitality packages, please contact Agnes on (011) 681 1702.

F2 Powerboating World Championship Zacharia Nale

SASOLBURG. - History will be made when the Fezile Dabi Municipality hosts the F2 Power Boating World Championship scheduled to take place in Sasolburg from December 14 - 15. This will be the first time Africa hosts the F2 Power Boating World Championship. According to organisers, the venue was chosen because, since the introduction of F1 Powerboat Racing as a sport in South Africa, the Free State Province has played a pivotal role with the establishment of the sport in the country and has become known as ‘the official home to the sport’. It is anticipated that that nine countries

from all over the world will be participating in this year’s F2 Powerboat World Final Championship. South Africa will be represented by Wynand de Jager who has made a mark in the sport for the past few years. The CEO of Free State Tourism Dhilosen Pillay says the Free State Tourism will get that international exposure from these games. He says the Free State is such a beautiful place because of its surrounding, with a river that gives it attractive features. “We use water as a form of entertainment and safety. A Disaster Management system is in place and we will ensure it is well marketed. We have no doubt the event will have a great turnout,” says Pillay.
